welcome to the club, where abstract makes furnace produce sounds you sometimes could mistake for being straight out of a professional DAW

Awesome. It is a very nice piece of music, and even though you limited yourself to sine and absolute sine, there is a lot of contrast in the timbres imo. I really keep listening to it for pure enjoyment.
I bought a Reface DX some years ago to train myself with FM synthesis. I only knew that this was the technology behind the Megadrive system. Then I discovered that Yamaha made a lot of FM chips over the years, including the so-called OPLs. I was very surprised to see that the older OPLs had features that the Reface DX didn't have, as choosing between several waveforms for the (two) operators. Whereas the Reface DX operators all have two types of feedback, saw-ish and square-ish.
Then forgetting about technical details, a pure t -> abs(sin(t)) really sounds close to a PWM to me. Which can be approached quite nicely by Reface DX's paradigm : A column of three operators 1 modulated by 2 modulated by 1, or a column of two operators [1 with square feedback] modulated by 1. By tweeking the latter choice, I feel like I can get close to the sounds in your composition.
All of this is very mysterious to me. If I only listen with my ears and turn of my brains, I feel like the 4 waveforms of the OPL sound like this :
Sine = Sine (congrats to me)
Half-sine ~ Sawtooth with a good bunch of cutoff
    Absolute sine ~ PWM
Pseudo-Sawtooth ~ Sawtooth (congrats to me)
It feels logic to me that if you have the computational power to approximate the composition of sine waves, then you also have the computational power to approximate the composition of these 4 types of functions. I'm surprised not to see the Square wave nor PWM in the OPL2 panel (square is available in OPL3 if I'm not mistaken), as I don't see the computational challenge in composing with a square or PWM function (which boils down to an "if" statement imo, but I'm not hardware programmer maybe there's a problem).
All this leads me to think that the choice Yamaha made with FM-X and Reface DX, namely this system of saw-ish and square-ish feedback on each operator, is a good one, a very versatile one. To get close to OPL2, you can do the following imo:
Half-sine : moderate amount of saw-ish feedback on the carrier
Pseudo-sawtooth : great amount of saw-ish feedback on the carrier
Absolute sine : impossible for less than two operators IMO : either moderate amount of square-ish feedback on the carrier and moderate amount of 1/1 modulation (my favorite), or 1/2/1 tower with moderate amounts of modulations
And with their modern system, you can vary continuously (just kidding) between all these possibilities.
Sorry for this long comment, but until I listened to your track and tried to replicate your sound, I was dubitative about Yamaha's modern FM paradigm, and felt like it was inferior to their older systems as OPL2, OPL3. Now I feel like it is an excellent paradigm, and that Yamaha's people are right about how to handle FM synthesis efficiently. I don't regret anymore choosing the Reface DX over the Opsix (which also makes awesome sounds).
PS : I have a technical question for you. To me, it is way more easy to listen to SNES music for extended periods of time with headset than to listen to Megadrive music with a headset. To me, this may be because the sample system with (inevitably) high compression of SNES leaves you with very few high harmonics, whereas Megadrive FM synthesis leaves you with lots of high harmonics. Do you EQ or compress your parts/tracks before uploading them or is this pure OPL2 output? If not, have you tried it ? Do you feel the same as me about listening to SNES/Megadrive ?

thanks for the comment!! was a fun read through
answering your questions it is a raw furnace export of opl2 emulation without any post-processing :)
i do also agree that with the interpolation on the snes audio it is more listenable on the long run than md stuff since its really harsh on your ears sometimes

This tune has a quality I struggle to put to words... like an old lament rendered in laminar flowing FM tones.
It sorta fells like something that'd play when you're in the ancient temple where you find that ancient evil sealed there just want to hang out and play video games with you...
    So damn good! Great work!
