My mom used to make that chicken chow mein for us when I was a kid! You brought back a fond memory from long ago. I love your meal in a mylar bag. The little wet napkin was very cool. I have to get some. I will be searching for your next egg roll video.

We ate this often when we were first married as well.. haven't had it in years, but now I think it's going on the menu just for old times sake. I always bought an extra can of baby corn. Yum! Can't wait to try this out in the freeze dryer. Thank you!

Hi, my chives flowers, oregano and chocolate mint turned out wonderful.
I froze the tray before and put the fresh herbs on the tray and put into the freezer dryer. I had the other trays loaded with other stuff.
I was afraid to put into freeze, I thought they might turn black.
It worked, I'm happy, already had a cup of chocolate mint tea.
Just thought I'd let you know. 🤗

I'm curious why you don't put the straw in the top and zip it up to the straw instead of poking a hole in the bag? I love your videos you give me such good ideas!! I am cooking for one so it is good to freeze dry in single serving sizes!!

My straws are a little short and I was trying to get the feel of one of those Capri Son drinks.

I had a laugh when you said that you were a young, married Airman. I used to be one of those too and I was dirt poor as well. SP from 87 to 94. Do you have a link to where you buy the clear faced bags that you put your drinks in?

    John have a question.
Have you done herbs, I was thinking about chives flowers, I was wondering if I should laid on tray, freeze or put in a cheesecloth bags.
Your chow mein, makes me want to make, so warm in Minnesota right now, just did rhubarb and asparagus. Saving rhubarb for wine making.
Thanks for what you do 🥰

I have not done herbs yet but intend to do so at some time.

I have a question, if you don't mind answering. I just finished freeze drying Merkts port wine cheese spread and the swiss almond cheese spread as well as spinach artichoke dip I bought from the deli. They powdered up nicely into my jars but are seeming to be greasy maybe? When I shake the jar the majority of it stays clumped in the bottom of the jar. Is this Ok to rehydrate and eat? For something like this how long would you let it sit in a vacuum sealed jar with an oxygen absorber before you felt you had to throw it out?

    • @JohnInBibs
      @JohnInBibs  3 роки тому +1

I have never done those. I can only guess the oil content is high or that it wasn't completely dry. If the oil content was high then for any period of storage you will need O2 absorbers, they absorbers will delay the oil going rancid. From what I read you won't die if you eat rancid oil, but it taste so bad that you won't eat it. I would use O2 absorbers and no plan on storing too long. This is only my opinion though LOL

Why wouldn't you put the drink mix in a small pouch in enough to just add to a bottle of water or canteen? Then you'd save space and could include two or three.

I wouldn't even heat it up just mix it together and freeze dry...the boiling water on it to rehydrate would heat it up...js
