Mounting a Tiny Winch on the Jimny - Is it enough?

  • Hey everyone!
    I have been wanting a winch on my little Suzuki Jimny, for a while now.
    But with the kind of driving i do with this little 4x4, one of the common, huge truck winches just felt like too much.
    So i ended up putting a little 2 ton winch on there.
    And then put it to the test, to see if it would do the job.

    That winch mount is fantastic, looks OEM. If you put an ARB sticker on it people would believe it came from them.

    Excellent work Kasper. It's almost like a stealth winch because of the way you hid it behind the bumper.

    I used to have a Steyr haflinger, an even smaller off road vehicle, I installed a 900kg quad bike winch with a snatch block to double the puling force, it worked really well and had a cordless remote.Youre bracketry looks Super Professional, it's always easier to ignore rules and regulations but it takes someone really clever to do a great job WITHIN the rules.

    Yes, thats a good device to have aboard. You can hang the winch hook on the anchor hook and put a little tension on to avoid having a loose hook clattering against the Suzuki. Additionally the winch hook wont then protrude beyond the bumper! Nice, tidy installation. I'll be on the watch for the next bit of energy on video from your spare time adventures. Thank you!

    That video was what I was looking for! I have Jimny and I don’t want to install heavy 33kg winch.

    Nice job on the bracket, the winch is plenty big enough for the Jimny. I would suggest using Dyneema rope though, and a simple fairlead instead of those rollers. The rollers are protruding beyond the bumper, whereas the fairlead would not. Would keep your inspector happier, and reduce weight even more. If you ever need to winch for a long time, your battery would possibly not keep up, a bigger capacity start/deep cycle one would be more reliable, and easier on the alternator..

    Love that Jimny and the winch install. Looks original equipment. I love those winches. I can't recommend a synthetic winch line enough as a future upgrade. Safe travels!

      And yeah, to be honest, the only reason i didn't get the "rope" was simply because it wasn't available for this particular winch. But once the is done for, I will be switching to rope :)

    I would recommend tubing the inside of the box tube at the mounting holes. Over drill the holes, slide a round tube through and tack weld the ends to the tube.

    I'm really impressed by your DIY skills 💪
    You are spot on in your thoughts about the Jimny.
    It's such a small and light vehicle and it's so important to keep it that way.
    I do also have a Jimny, and it is equipped with a Warn axon 5500 pound winch, it's more than enough and the winch only ads 15 kg of ekstra weight, in the front.

    You will notice a big weight advantage once you swap out the steel cable for synthetic, and change the fairlead to an alloy one.

    Nice work, well done! Just one thing I didn't see you do... Did you not install a heavy duty Isolator next to the battery? It just makes it less likely for accidental short circuit if the power cable from battery to winch ever got damaged, and, easy to disconnect the power without tools if anything went wrong during use. It could still be done easily, and cost ? Maybe €20 extra ?

    • @KJOff-Road
      @KJOff-Road  2 місяці тому +1

      Thank you! And yes, you are absolutely right.
      And to be honest, I did want to install one. And still do. But, I didn't have one on hand, and also being a bit pressed for time, I just hooked it up directly, for now.
      But it is certainly the right thing to do, having a breaker in there.

    Sometimes it’s easy only do on the winches and stand outside the car😊. It also keeps the tension equal.

      I think winching when the vehicle is in neutral with manual transmission or 1st gear without throttle on automatic transmission is better. Constant load on the winch.

    • @einfelder8262
      @einfelder8262 2 місяці тому +1

      Hmm - I don't think you have done much winching off road. When you're stuck on a steep hill where you have to use the handbrake and park/1st gear to stop the vehicle rolling backwards, you simply have to get in the car to release the brake and winch from inside.

  • @iamrichrocker

    shame that this vehicle, isn't street legal in the US..because 'it was never prepared for US regualtions"..shame that due to most vehicles are so damn expensive..this Jimny would fit many budgets in this crazy SUV country..and good for you doing a solo road trip..do what you want and go where you want when you want...have fun..

      Jimny's are very popular here in Australia. Many never see off road, just get used as reasonably priced practical and economical daily drivers. One of my neighbours is in his 70s and owns one. Bought it to replace a Fiat 500.

    I see two mistakes!
    Number one ist the choice for a steel cable winch, to use a winch with a dyneema rope is safer, number two the winch has only 2 tons, there would be a 2,5 ton winch better, because it has a little bit more strength an experts say the minimum for a winch should be the double of the maximum weight of the car.

  • @stephenlong5065
    @stephenlong5065 2 місяці тому +1

    I've noticed on a lot of recovery videos when using a winch, your suppose to let the winch do the work without you revving the engine, what's your view on this ?

    • @KJOff-Road
      @KJOff-Road  2 місяці тому

      Well, normally yes. That is correct.
      But as with so many things, it all depends on the situation.
      With such a small winch, as here, I felt it was best to give it whatever help i could.
      But of course, if the wheels are just digging down, you won't be helping the winch, by trying to drive.
