Very Nice, thank you for starting this series. Suggestions for future episodes: Wood preparation (drying, stabilizing, etc.), hybrid blanks, clean-up (spills in pressure pot, covering workbench, molds, getting spills of scale, etc.), dealing with voids in blank, what is interference power and when/how to use, dealing with thick pores, using resin as a finish (resin (epoxy) on a turned bowl), how toxic are different resins and what to do if it gets on you, panel discussion between experts on different epoxies - working time, demold time, pressure pot required, multiple layers, can resin be used as a finish, etc..
How about a video on colorants? Mica powders, flat powder colors (i.e. oxides), thin liquid colorants, thicker liquid colorants, etc. How much to add, saturation, etc. Maybe talk about where to get some of these powders (your mixes, Hobby Lobby, online art stores, etc). Possible a section on mixing colors so the do or don't bleed based on preference and casting resin used (my understanding epoxies tend to bleed together). Maybe a video on casting "stuff" in resin. Not just wood or woody cutoffs but dried flower, metal shavings, pine cones, fordite, spiked devil (gum) pods, etc. The casting of "stuff" in resin is quite popular and I would love to know more about that. Another topic I am fascinated by and would love to see a video on is the actual process involved with making/mixing colorants (mica, oxides, even liquid colors) as well as water based vs oil based. This topic would probably b fairly complicated and I don't know how much you can can speak to as there really is a lot here. Look forward to your videos on casting. My wife got me a California Tools 5 gallon casting pot for Christmas so I am experimenting now.
Good topic for a series. Have been doing this for a short while so will be interesting to see your thoughts on this. One of the other things needed, well actually two: paper towels and denatured alcohol
Thanks Mark! I think paper towels are of course helpful to have around for spills but not integral to the casting process. I’ve personally never used denatured alcohol for casting. I use it a lot when pen turning to clean them but never for resin casting. What do you use it for?
Looking forward to the series. I'm looking for info on the different types of resins, which ones don't require a pressure and and how long they take to cure before turning.
Thankyou for doing this video, as a newbie to resin it was good to listen to you. I am in Australia so some products maybe different, but the theory will come in handy. One thing is what is the use of alcohol, is it used as a mold release
Great starter video. Keep them coming. Question: I’m a bowl turner and would like to use resin to fill holes, rot areas etc. The bowls can vary in size. There could be 15”wide-6” in depth +/- what would be the best resin to use? Thanks from your time.
Thanks Jon! Many different resins will work fine for that. For such a large size that usually won’t go in a pressure pot Id use an epoxy. Alumilite carry’s multiple as well as Liquid Diamonds is good. There are tons of brands but I’d recommend alumilite or another known brand for reliability
What type of resin do you prefer for different projects? interested in making tool handles. Would I need different resin if I put different stuff in the resin like flower pedals, shells, etc? Thanks!
Do you need cure device and wash for resin casting? Do you need oven to heat the resin to become hard? Do you need machine to move the resin in the cup? Do you need UV light for resin casting?
Question....is it possible in a pressure pot....say I'm doing pen blanks....to make a shelf system to hold more molds or would the wood or whatever I'm using for that cause a problem?
Great video. I use 7 day casting resin, usually bubble free. Never used a pressure pot, just recently got a vacuum chamber to remove bubbles entirely.
Vacuum chambers aren’t as effective as pressure pots, and most importantly won’t work for polyurethanes as the vacuum process takes too long
Hi Casey, Great first part. Lots of useful information. Off to watch Part 2 now. Take care Casey. Cheers, Huw
Thanks Huw I appreciate it my friend!
Air compressor would be a needed item (for a pressure pot) and would be a good topic to discuss too
Excellent starter video, Casey. Thanks
Thanks Joe! Really excited for the series

Those are great suggestions Jesse, I’m sure I will use many of those!!
Thank you, I’ve been looking for a series just like this one.
I’m excited for it!

That will be episode 2!

very informative got most of the stuff you mentioned but to me it is great thank you looking forward to next one
Thanks Mark! Excited for the series!
Looking forward to the series. I'm looking for info on the different types of resins, which ones don't require a pressure and and how long they take to cure before turning.
I can definitely do an episode on that!

Great video!can not wait for the next one
It’s coming soon!
Great video. I'm getting into resin casting. I'm using Liquid Diamonds just to start. So far things are going well.
Thanks so much Angi! That’s a great place to start!

Take a look at Kim Tippin's UA-cam channel. She does a lot of hybrid wood & epoxy bowls.

Great video! Greetings from Germany
Thanks!

Yes entirely possible and wouldn’t cause a problem. Lots of people do it
Nice
Lots of rubber gloves
Yes lots! 😃
How do I get a hold of you much thanks [ email ]
