When I moved to Bengaluru nearly 25 years ago, Chinese family-run restaurants formed a significant part of the dining landscape. Run by second and third generation immigrants who were shipped to India by the British over a century ago, the cuisine in these restaurants had evolved to integrate Indian influences, much like how the entrepreneurs of Chinese descent, now Indian citizens, had adapted to the tastes and traditions of the land. Since then, most of these restaurants have closed doors. However during my recent visit to Mangalore, I came upon one such establishment that has stood the test of time for nearly half a century. I caught up with Louis and Rosy Wong to find out more about the Indian Chinese culinary phenomenon, and to also savour some of the dishes on offer at their restaurant, Hao Hao, Manguluru’s most popular Chinese dining spot.
    Crunchy Fried Chicken
A tasty duet of spicy chicken supremes encased in crisp, crunchy threads. Alongside a tangy, piquant dipping sauce, this makes for an interesting play of flavours and textures on the palate, not surprising then that this is “the most ordered dish” here.
    Rs. 220 (usd 3)
    8/10
    HongKong Soup
A nourishing, delicately flavoured chicken broth that is topped with ‘clouds’ of eggs whipped into a soft meringue. There’s tiny diced of vegetables to give the chicken company with some soft noodles.
    Rs. 180 (usd 2.4)
    9/10
Chicken, Mushrooms & Bamboo Shoots Stir Fry
A wholesome assemblage of veggies - chinese cabbage, peppers, beans, onions, bamboo shoots - tossed with chicken in a light soya sauce. The garlic is quite pronounced, in the flavour of the dish, and also on the bite with whole cloves that are stir-fried into the noodles.
    Rs. 220 (usd 3)
    8/10
    Honey Spiced Chicken WIngs
Fried chicken wings, tossed with a potent dark honey-soy-chilli-garlic sauce and sprinkled over with toasted sesame and spring onions. The chicken is crunchy and moist, only wish the sauce had seeped all the way into the wings.
    Rs. 230 (usd 3.1)
    8/10
    Roasted & Fried Chilli Chicken
The chicken is cooked twice, first roasted, allowed to rest before being tossed in a hot wok with soy, chillies, ginger, garlic, spring onions… rendering the meat the sort that pulls away from the bone effortlessly. Although spicy, the chilli heat is balanced against the umami flavours of the dish. There are also bits of chicken skin in the dish that provides a lovely flavour burst.
    Rs. 220 (usd 3)
    10/10
    Shin Min Rice
A one-dish meal of soy prawns, sweet garlic chicken, fried rice topped with an egg sauce that coats every grain of rice in its moist custardy texture. The chicken is slightly sweetesh with a prick of pungency from the garlic, the shrimps are a tad overwhelmed by the soy and batter.
    Rs. 220 (usd 3)
    7.5/10
    Dragon Noodles
My favourite of the two main courses, this has chicken in a savoury sauce tossed with plenty of veggies, served with noodles - fried and soft, topped with an egg sauce.
    Rs. 210 (usd 2.8)
    8.5/10
    Happy Eating!

Wow thank you for covering Hao Hao. It is one of my favorite restaurant at Mangalore.
Here is some trivia about Chinese food in Mangalore.
Shinmin was the first Chinese Restaurant at Mangalore in the late 70's. It was near KMC college near lighthouse hill, hampanakatta. Mr Wong probably worked there. As he said Shinmin was popular with Malaysian students studying medical at KMC. Mangaloreans hated the food initially as it was bland. Later they changed their style to make food more palatable to the mangalorean crowd. Shinmin became so much popular that older generation associate Chinese food and people of Chinese origin with Shinmin.
Shinmin rice is probably a tribute to that restaurant.
In the late 80's Wong family started Hao Hao ( meaning 'Good' in Chinese) and Hao Ming ( meaning 'Fate' ). Hao Hao was popular among students and singles. It was located next to a Pub on bridge road and attracted lot of young crowd. Hao Ming was strictly for family crowd.
Hao Hao food was very cheap and portions were huge earlier. During student days of Canara High School and Canara PU we celebrated lot of birthdays and gatherings at Hao Hao. You could have belly full of tasty food for less than ₹100 per person in the early 2000's.
Hao Hao stood the test of time against the likes of Mainland China, Yo China and plethora of other Chinese restaurants which eventually closed down. It always had a strong patronage from Mangaloreans.
Mr Wong and his family are as much Mangaloreans as rest of us.
They relocated Hao Hao to current location few years back. Now it attracts lot more family crowd and is one of the favourite restaurants loved by Mangaloreans.

David and Baby Aunty were the original owners of the restaurant. They started in Shin Min at the basement of Rupa hotel later on the started Hao Hao next to juice junction at Balmatta, and Hoa Ming, We used to frequently visit their restaurant when we were students. We are indeed indebted to them as they were kind to us as they gave us discounts, they took care of us as their own. We used to have monthly mess with them (one meal). God bless them wherever they are.

Much much before there was Hao Min, and before Hao Hao began, there was Shin Min Restaurant, housed in the basement of Hotel Roopa, Balmatta Rd. These were the good old days, in the 80s, when the cosmopolitan population of Mangalore knew what it was like to have fun, music, peace and love; when fledgling rock bands of India had sold-out concerts, when humans were more in number, and no one really cared about one's .... well, you get the drift😀. Shin Min was very popular, almost always full; and one of their most popular dishes was the Shin Min Special. A meal in itself. Well washed down with chilled spirits from the king of good times 🍻. When the restaurant closed down, the populace moved on to Hao Hao. But customers still kept asking for the elusive Shin Min Special 🍝. Glad to see the dish has taken a new lease of life in the other establishments. One more reason to visit this very very cool city. Long Live Mangalore 👍🏼

Hi, I am from Mangalore. Been staying here since 1989. Needless to say I am a foody. I enjoy watching your videos. Mainly i want to explore new eateries in Bengaluru. I have watched almost all your episodes about eateries in Mangaluru. Have been wanting to write. Girimanjas is my favourite, though miss manja's presence, love Janata Deluxe, it belongs to a very close friend, Shetty Lunch home belongs to a neighbour. Whenever I have seen these videos have been wanting to write, but today when i watched this Hau Hau eposode, just couldn't stop myself. When we first came to Mangaluru in 89 we would visit Hau Hau often. Then this was a small joint which served awesome food, at a reasonable price. A cozy place where sometimes the owner would have her tiny baby on the billing counter. We had just finished college, found new jobs, some new friends and a place like this which would be easy on our pockets. Simply heaven. Now since March 23rd last year due to covid I hardly visit restaurants desperate as i may be to do so, this episode brought back loads of memories. There are many eateries now in mangaluru still crunchy chicken happens to be one of my favourites even now. As it is I enjoy all your episodes, but this one was the best. Thank you

I feel so happy when I see people from other cultures in India. I hope you will check out Filipino cafes & restaurants in Bangalore.
There is a sizable community married to Indians and living there. In time their Filipindian kids will perhaps create a totally new cuisine that draws from both cultures.

There is a restaurant in Ooty that is similar and they still have all those classics. I am from
jamshedpur and we have the chia’s who own and delight with Franck’s and also a gaadi... though I do crave the green chilly chicken of the andhra variety that is a bangalore special ...

Also, do an episode on Halli jonne biryani in Jayanagar, their mutton sukka is better than Shivaji's in my opinion. It is lightly spiced and more tender.

Hi, I've had Indian Chinese in New York but nothing as close to this. I mean, the food looks good and the way you described it, I'm sure it tastes as well too. I used to think that the best Indian Chinese is in Calcutta but it appears, I've to stop by here as well during my next trip to India. Thanks and keep uploading🙏🏼
