Hey Anthony, I think I can answer this. As a pro bassist, I have several different editions of orchestral excerpts for bass to help me learn repertoire quicker. The purpose of these editions are to provide solutions for the most challenging lines from the standard orchestra repertoire. I will definitely be adding the Quad to my music library. As a bass teacher, I introduce my high school students to the available bass excerpts, when they audition for all-county or all-state orchestra. This is how I convey fingerings and bowings to them. If you're a community orchestra player, these kinds of standard orchestral repertoire references are indispensable. So it's not so much a question of if the quad is too advanced or not, the answer is "yes, and that's their purpose". You don't need this kind of material to read down the easy stuff. It's more a question of if you are an aspiring orchestra bassist. You NEED this. Chances are, the orchestra you play in will someday program the Mozart and/or Beethoven symphonies covered in the Quad, and perhaps some of the other pieces. Some of the other excerpts covered in the Quad I have not played in any of the orchestras I play with (Strauss Ein Held, and Don Juan for example). Hope that helped.
Good question! I think it’s a good resource for anyone hoping to learn more about standard orchestral repertoire. I’d say it’s more of an intermediate-advanced resource, but if I had an adult student interested in digging into the major works, this would be a must-have in my book.
