    QUESTION FOR THE COMMENTS:
Who was the best coach/mentor you've ever had? Tell us why, we want to know!
    HERE'S HOW:
Consider your mentors. Who are they? What impact are they making on you? If you don’t have one, pray about who you might ask to coffee as a first step. If you already have a mentor, ask God if there’s someone you might become a mentor to.
Become New is here to help you grow spiritually one day at a time.

John, without being “weird”, you have been one of my mentors for years. Steady, wise, broken, recovering, imperfect. Thank you for modeling what it means to walk with Jesus through it all!

I've had many mentors over the years, but teachers and coaches from my high school days had a great effect on decisions I made and things I did along the way. I think that's why I went into teaching and coaching later in life. I carved out a niche in my program of study for character development, and I put my players ahead of winning. Coach Wooden suggested that you won't see the results of your mentorship until 20 years later. I won't see the results of mentoring many of my former students and players, but I have faith that the Lord put me in a place and time where I could have a positive impact. Although long retired, I'm feeling the nudge to go back into coaching.

You are so correct, Ray, and you will never truly know vast and amazing the impact you've had on so many. But know, you have!

Love the quote “It’s what you know (learn) after you know it all that matters!” Question re my mentor and who I’m mentoring deserves some pondering.

What a fun exercise, to think back over the decades of my teachers. Mom, of course, and a swim coach named Scott Halliday. Oswald Chambers, calculus teacher Mr Lester, Pastor John Coyne, John Courson, James MacDonald, Dallas Willard, Pastor Dave Rolph. Most recently my sister Margaret, Frank Laubach, and a counselor named Carol. All human and imperfect, each teaching me something that became part of the fabric of Me. How blessed I am, how grateful.

I, much to my regret, never met him, but without question the person whom the Holy Spirit has primarily used (and continues to use) as mentor in my life is Dallas Willard. My spiritual formation journey has been overwhelmingly impacted by Dallas’ teachings as well as yours, John, along with James Bryan Smith, Richard Foster, the ministry of Renovare, the Dallas Willard ministry, and John Mark Comer. In my life, it would be difficult to overstate the impact of Dallas’ teaching and the subsequent tidal wave sized ripple effect his life has had and continues to have.

My math teacher in middle school and Jr High - Mrs. Hamby. A group of us got to be mentored and instructed by her in math and life. She was so important in shaping my life for the good - a love for curiosity and learning. ❤ So grateful for her influence.

Is it possible to be a type of mentor by just listening?

I have been blessed with several mentors throughout my life; beautiful wise women from my Tuesday women’s bible study in my younger years. So very helpful for a good 15+ years. Later, John, your books were my mentor, guiding me along very difficult times for a few years. And now, you continue to be my mentor through these teachings. Ultimately, Jesus is my mentor forever. He will not grow tired of leading me. So so grateful for all the mentors in my life. ❤

John, I’m sure unbeknownst to you, you (with Tim and team’s help for sure!) have been an extremely special mentor to me. I’ve grown up in the Catholic Church and am still quite committed to the church, and yet you have mentored me in a way that each and every day I love. I have not missed one single episode since your started become new. And I remember first encountering you when visiting my sister in Palo Alto from my home NYC. Your shift to BN has resulted in being able to experience Jesus in a way I haven’t in my 63 years been able to. Thank you for being my mentor. I will think about who I have or can mentor. Deeply grateful, Amy

This made me think of Tod Bolsinger's quote: “...to lead alone is reckless and arrogant; it is foolish and dangerous to both self and others. To lead alone usually results in either a failure of nerve or a failure of heart, which is to squander the valuable time, energy, and commitment of organizations and followers. And therefore, to lead people without partners and mentors, full support of family and friends, and a lifetime commitment at every moment that you are leading of being in either psychological therapy, coaching, spiritual direction, or mentoring would be considered leadership malpractice.” (Tod Bolsinger, Tempered Resilience, 128)

My Aunt Ruth was an outstanding mentor to me. She had a deep faith, which she was steadfast in sharing. Even more importantly, she lived out her faith. She had a light hearted demeanor and yet skillfully combined that with expressing honestly about her struggles. It is so valuable to me as I recall how she kept her composure when my mom, her twin sister, was on Hospice care. Aunt Ruth had traveled from New York to Arkansas for a visit. When Aunt Ruth left , she knew that without a miracle of healing, it would be the last time she would see her precious twin on earth. Thinking of her poise and courage at that time, helps me to remember that God will enable me to handle any situation I ever have to face.

John Wooden was a great coach and Bill Walton a great player/broadcaster. I also would loved to have been in the room with Wooden and Willlard! The point of needing to be mentored and to mentor is well taken. The moment we stop learning is the moment we stop living with purpose and passion.

Where I "fail" perhaps is in having too many mentors. In matters of faith - C.S. Lewis, Dallas Willard, through this group - John Ortberg... In matters of writing: J.R.R.Tolkien, Ursula LeGuin, Frank Peretti... Particularly in writing, I also have some "anti-mentors"- people who do things I don't want to do and whom I don't want to emulate, no matter how popular and "successful" they are.

Thanks John! My mentors are The Holy Father, Christ Jesus & the Holy Spirit. The other mentors throughout my life have been my family, the Holy Bible, the church, some very fine pastors & teachers and some amazing friends! I'm so blessed. As a mentor I hope & pray that I have been a blessing to our family, friends & our church.

John, this my first time commenting after one of your sessions. I’ve had a few mentors during my life i.e. an older friend at college, a pastor a few years ago, Oswald Chambers for a number of years. More recently, since connecting with Become New with your series on Thankgiving in 2022, I would add you as a mentor along with Dallas Willard. Thank you for your insightful teaching that has brought new perspectives on Scripture and how to live a life in the Kingdom.
