It would be a wonderful world if we had more coaches and teachers today like Wooden.....we can all apply these principles to our daily life! So grateful to have these books and videos. :)
Two thoughts occurred to me: 1) The meek shall inherit the earth. 2) John Wooden reminds me of Mr. Roger’s. Both had strong personal faith in God. Both mild mannered. Both saw themselves as teachers.
I just got done watching a video of Bob knight trash John Wooden about how he dosen't respect Wooden because of his recruiting practices. John Wooden is so awesome as a person as much as a coach. I would take Wooden as a coach more than anyone.
If Coach John Wooden would've seen the way the Golden State Warriors plays unselfishly in the Pro level he would've been proud! His Pyramid for Success were emphasized countless times to play as a Team by Coach Pop and now by Coach Kerr......
The funniest thing about John Wooden, is had he not started coaching in the era he did, he probably would not have survived. His first 10 years coaching were nothing special, and even the UCLA of today would have dismissed him at that point. And had they done so, they would have lost something special. The real secret to John Wooden, is he always studied basketball, and coaching. Then he took the lessons he learned, and applied them to himself, and got better all the time. That is a success principal anyone anywhere can do.
Give me a break there was a booster that violated numerous NCAA rules and every damn body knew it but wouldn't do anything about it. Wooden may have been a good coach but he got the best players because many of them knew they would be catered to. I heard Kareem Abdul Jabbar say he could get anything he wanted while at UCLA. I'll take Dean Smith any day and he wouldn't have tolerated boosters giving his players free stuff under the table, or no show jobs, or money. They wouldn't do anything to Wooden because they were afraid what the scandal would lead to.
No you give me a break. It was an academic scandal and not an NCAA violation, even Jay Bilas who played for Carolina's greatest rival Duke said as much, stating it had nothing to do with the athletic dept. and it wasn't in the NCAA's jurisdiction. The coach can certainly check with the academic professors and counselors but why would they doubt the word of the grading authority of those teaching the class. They can't very well go into the classroom with the athlete. At some point they must rely on those instructors to understand how the athlete is doing. If those academics are fudging the record for whatever motivation then the onus is on them to pay a price for their malfeasance. And not just athletes were taking this crip course but they were open to all students and many regular non scholarship students took them thus it was only within the purview of the institution. I seriously doubt you are an attorney but rather a malicious fan of another institution and likely jealous of UNC's success. Once recruiting became more equitable and southern schools had access to all the great black players in the south they became more competitive with the likes of UCLA and it was Dean Smith after he recruited Charley Scott who made most of that possible. Until then only Maryland in the ACC had recruited black athletes. The scandal at UNC only happened from 1993 on and they never produced any evidence Dean Smith or Bill Gutheridge, Matt Doherty or Roy Williams knew anything about it. And the whole system is suspect all over the country and not just in the south you boob. Even good students will opt to take a crip course if only to boost their academic standing. I took a crip course when I was in college and everyone was cognizant of the fact it was a crip course. I'm sure even the Ivy League schools have some besides the small liberal arts school I attended.
@@roymerritt6992 Why does the NCAA call them "student-atheletes"? If the NCAA does not care about academics these "students" would just be called "college athletes". Truth is NCAA engages in selective enforcement of the rules and everyone knows it. Big schools = Big money for them...
Coaching cheat why he had Sam Gilbert doing his recruiting. Wooden was a good coach in terms of basketball but I have no respect for how it was accomplished. Bob Knight far better coach won with maybe 2 or 3 NBA players tops in his time at Indiana. Scott May, Isiah Thomas & Landon Turner (who never played in the NBA cause of a car accident.) Bob Knight you can be critical of how his temper played a bad role at Indiana but one thing is Bob Knight never had 1 single NCAA rules violation.
Love John Wooden, but at 10:08 sounds a lot like what's wrong with America right now! "If you feel like you did the best you could, that's enough." That's the same as, "everyone gets a trophy!!!!
Those two things aren’t the same things. If you did the best you could do and lost, you should still be proud because you did all you could. So you accept the loss gracefully and learn from it. It’s not in any way similar to the “everyone gets a trophy” mentality. That mentality basically denies reality, while Wooden’s mentality gracefully accepts harsh realities.

Fortunately for you, at least one such coach exists....Mike Krzyzewski, the coach at Duke.

Truth hurts doesen't it. UCLA was put on probation because of Wooden's recruiting violations.

Tell his players since they all credit him. 🙄
