    Sir please clear my doubt. If applied force is on m1. Then f max =a×m2 or f max =a×m1.

    Sir, why does Friction act in the backward direction and forward direction ??

      Friction opposes relative motion.
      M2 is trying to move in forward direction so friction acts in backward direction
      M1 has no force acting on it so it remains stationary w.r.t ground (due to inertia)
      But w.r.t m2 it is moving backwards so friction acts in forward direction.

      Surface is smooth so there is no friction between m2 and surface
