    I don't think people realize that Brett and Eddy's violins are probably worth like $10k + maybe even more. Those are old violins and they are professionals.
    I have looked up Brett's instrument. He plays an old Scrollavetza which goes for between the $20k-$30k range (AT AUCTION = MORE FOR RETAIL).
    Another thing I want to mention is that Benny's bow also makes a huge difference at that level. It could perhaps be a Pecatte or a Tourte which costs more than Brett's violin alone ( ~$100k respectively)

    Last Saturday I attended Benny's concert in Taiwan. We all know that Benny is an incredibly amazing, talented violinist, and his recordings are beautiful for sure, but let me tell you something: they certainly pale in comparison to his live performance. It was the most magical experience. It's been days and I'm still thinking about it. So if you ever get the chance, do go to concerts, immerse yourself in the powerful sound that came straight out of the instruments (btw, if I'm not wrong, Benny's playing on a Strad now).
    I almost died when Benny (in a shy manner) reminded the audience that there are still a few movements left. (And everybody clearly liked dat ;)) I even heard a girl nearby whispering 'aww he's so cute ;-; ' and I was like I KNOW RIGHT)

I notice that all the soloists play with an intensity and aim to stand out. Brett and Eddie play in an ensemble fashion. I can see them breaking that habit, if they think about it. A goos intrucment can sent the sound farer with good quolity. I mean, even you sit so far, it still sounds it plays close in front of you. Classical music usually doesnt use amp or any electric device. So the quolity of the instrucment has to be good to play music to hundreds of people in a hall.

    Heard a sad story of Guarneri's life. He lived at the same time as Stradivari and struggled competing him. During his life he wasn't highly recognized (mostly because of the fame of Stradivari) and her violins' sound was considered as squeaky an hissing. But the fact is that at these times violin concerts were run in small rooms for small groups of listeners. When music became more popular for the masses and concerts were organized in much bigger audiences it appeared that Guarneri violins sound much better and brighter in those big spaces but the master already passed away by that time. That was the reason why Paganini preferred Guarneri over Stradivari. And that's why, unfortunately, there are only about 30 Guarneri violins left (comparing to 400+ Stradivari's) nowadays.

Having this ability to make judgement calls on playing, sound, instrument, technique etc puts him in a league of his own. Just wow.

      To be honest I have my doubts. I really don't hear a difference between the violins, even with my really good headphones. A lot of it is probably placebo. There is a test on this. They tested the sounds of different stradivarius violins and the blindfolded listeners couldn't commonly exact on a definitive difference. It's mostly placebo. Also, the higher quality a violin is, the smoother the transition between notes seem to be like the difference between hollow and solid wood when you knock on it. That's my observation at least but yes: just like with any skill set, the more practiced you are in it, the easier it is to pick up on the nuances and tell what makes a proper tool for the job at hand.

      Well there are certainly diminishing returns at a certain point. If they actually got a 'cheap' violin for comparison (~$500), there would be a very noticeable difference. However, Brett and Eddy already have good instruments; sure, they might not be worth millions, but they are by no means cheap. Of course, I have no way of knowing their instrument's price for sure, but I'd be surprised if they were less than $5000.

    • @reepicheepsfriend
      @reepicheepsfriend 5 років тому +3

      Proper setup is crucial, which can often be lost in the extremely low end of pricing range, so I would definitely say their estimate of $1000 (while likely a little low for their actual instruments) is a realistic if you want a guarantee that an instrument is set up correctly and won't have major issues that could impact your playing.

    • @eurly93
      @eurly93 5 років тому +15

      @@KevinWangz It's doubtful their instruments are below $10,000 -15,000. Few violinists progress through the collegiate level and into professional play without upgrading to a "pro-level" instrument. Usually if you're good enough to become professional the differences in a better instrument are more obvious to you and therefore upgrading is worth it. Cheaper violins simply don't project as easily or provide as good of tone closer to the bridge, however, a very excellent player can overcome this to some degree. You can definitely tell Benny struggles to produce the same piece on their violins and there are several notes that are lacking vibrancy and stand out compared to the del gesu. As with all things diminishing returns. A $100 violin will usually be 10x worse than a $1,000 violin. A $10,000 violin will probably be 2-3x better than a $1,000 instrument. Any of the $50k+ instruments are marginally better and mostly only have that value for rarity and prestige. Yes the Gesu sounded noticeably better than their violins but only with Benny playing, and he's so good he can almost make their violins sound like a million bucks too.

      Paul D. sometimes i forget their instruments might be worth thousands of dollars (i looked up the maker of Brett’s violin) because they abuse it so much lmao and considering they were concertmasters in their respective orchestras, we can safely say their violins are definitely not cheap. i wonder about their bows, though, because i haven’t seen anyone talking about quality and price range of bows yet.
