Bro, u learned playing double bass only after that phone call ? And then learnt to play all the complex parts in I prevail's music? ...just wow!! Hard work is the key
I did! Yes, you can't get around hard work thats for sure.

Haha that's literally how it went! Thats my goal in all of this, so I'm glad it's helping you Adam!

Hello friends. Thanks for watching this video! Some things have come to my attention that I wanted to address real quick. It seems that unfortunately I may not have communicated the message of this video clearly enough for some. I think the original title of this video may have put too much of an emphasis on the smallest part of this story, how I "faked" being confident with the double bass pedal. This part of the story is not why I got the gig and I apologize if that was misleading, that truly was not my intention! To be honest, I just thought it was a much catchier title than "how I worked really hard for 11 years playing music and making connections that eventually led to an opportunity where I had to work even harder to learn a brand new skill." However, I have now changed the title to more accurately reflect what I am trying to communicate. But regardless, my message and my intention behind this video is not to reward lying. I sincerely apologize if that's what was communicated. Thats never the message I want to send. The message I want to send is to work hard to create opportunities for yourself and if you are ever blindsided with an opportunity that you weren't expecting, then work even harder to try to get yourself to a place where you can nail the audition.
I understand that honesty and integrity are what you expect from me and that's what I work so hard to give you. I also understand that In that moment years ago I could have communicated "I'm not super comfortable with double bass currently, but I'll work tirelessly to make sure I'm on par come audition time." But the truth is that as an eager 23 year old drummer really hungry for an opportunity, I didn't make that choice. That's the choice I believe I'd make today, but that was a few years ago and the reality is I've grown since then, but I can't change my past.
Throughout my entire drumming journey I've struggled with confidence behind the drum kit. Thinking that I'm never good enough. Often times I'd have this thought every time I stepped behind the kit. My instinct was to say "I'm not good enough" when the opportunity came my way, after all this is what I was so used to telling myself. But in that moment I tried to be as confident as I could be for a change. And because the confidence thing was so new, maybe the way I went about it was a little sloppy.
At the end of the day, I'm truly passionate about helping you succeed in all areas of drumming. I always want my message to be a positive one that helps you continue to move forward in your journey. Please know that those are my intentions with every single video I make. I love you all and I'm grateful for each one of you.
It's ok man we still like ya
IMO what was missing from the video was the part about "how I worked really hard for 11 years playing music". It sounds like you had a very diverse experience working all different kinds of gigs and practiced diligently, which helped you to prepare you for learning a new style of music in a very short time. I am not sure the same could be said if you had half that experience or if you were just starting out.
I remember seeing a video of a famous youtuber (who is also a very competent musician) who took a gig that was not his style and way out of league. He was of course rejected, and I don't think he is pursuing that path anymore. This is also totally understandable, because the kind of skill he needs to do those gigs(i.e literally sight reading any classical pieces they throw at you) requires specialization that may take years to master, and puts him in a totally different musical path then the one he is on.
I also remember talking to a friend of mine who is currently touring with a professional band. He was a total beginner and I guess he was so moved by the music that he asked them if he could practice with band sometimes. He told me he really sucked at first and even the band member was telling him how much he sucked, but he kept going to practice and the band still let him sit in, and eventually he was asked to do gigs, and no he is full time member of the band.
I guess what I am getting at is that there are different ways to handle a situation and that there are many different outcomes, and being honest also works too. And as inspiring as your story may be, I just think people's focusing on these kinds of success story and not on the other possibilities/outcomes seems to be a bit of a survivorship bias. For example, a person in similar situation as yours may end up having serious injury problems if they didn't have enough under the belt to learn challenging music without straining their bodies.
Having said that, none of this takes away from the kind of dedication you put into music and the success you had with it. At the end of the day, you were able to learn the music well enough to do the gig, and even if you didn't, this is the best way to learn just what's missing in your playing to take your playing to the next level.
Again, I am not trying to take away anything from your experience. It takes a lot of courage and "confidence" to be able to be so open about your experiences as a musician, and it was really nice of you to be really frank and address the criticisms that you may be getting. Thanks for posting this video!
A really inspiring story! Bottom line is, you must believe in yourself first before anyone else will. This will involve work and time well spent honing your skills. I bet I Prevail is extremely happy you are playing for them. All the best!
I couldn't agree more Jeff! We are one big happy family over there that's for sure.
I only played in my basement. Then a girl band asked me if I wanted to join. I felt so incompetent. I said yes because I knew if I didn't I'd never do it. It was terrifying. But we're playing our 3rd gig in a few weeks. And I'm on my way. AND gigging means you meet so many people and learn more opportunities!
Great Video
Could U make a video about how U make your drums sound great jn different situations (stage, church etc)?
I like it!
Drums in church necer works😂😂😂
@@exolp6949 Neither does your English.
@@milesschmidt54 I'm from German and autocorrection is very bad if you have a German keyboard
A big whassup to you and the band, man.
Much love!
This is exactly what I'm going through now, and this vid gave me more confidence.
Thanks.
Great video Gabe! So glad you’re playing with I Prevail!
Me too!
Been in similar situations (even down to the double kick weakness, lol). I'd add that this is also why knowing different genres helps a ton!
-Proud of your efforts man! You're an inspiration.
7:06 favourite part
Honestly, me too!
This isn't just a drum lesson, it can be applied to all aspects of life, believe in yourself and there are no limits. You're a top man Gabe!
I appreciate your honesty and your story is inspiring. I’m a drummer as well, and only have 1 video on my channel but I’m trying to step up my game and get busy with it. I play for my church 2x a month and that’s been a great way for me to consistently practice but I’d like to find a band to rock with again. It’s been a long time as I’m working a 9-5 and raising 2 kids but it’s something I’m missing.
Best of luck with IP. You guys rock!
I love all of this. Very important stuff, pretty motivating as well. Thank you!
Gamble that paid off! Have been following you for a while and totally surprised that I got into I prevail later on and see you there, I was like... wait a minute... dood, huge props... you give inspiration to so many up and comers it's not even funny! keep doing you man!
I’m just starting with the drums, I’m a mom of 4 so I really have to work hard to put in the time to practice. Your videos are sooo helpful, it’s never to late to start something new no matter what position you are in, we create our own reality.
Hope you’re still drumming! Keep at it! 🤟💪
Hey bro such a good video! Thanks for sharing! Real good advice and tips. Also appreciate the fact that you're sharing your gold with other musicians, some musicians can be real hard to chat with and others lack a mentor/teacher attitude. We can always learn something from someone.
Love this advice. I went from playing hardcore to playing folk/country and my confidence has definitely gone down. But you definitely inspired me.
Great video. Im glad I stumbled across your channel. The thing I wish I could work on more is preparation. Between the day job, wife, kids and house I'm spread pretty thin...
Hands down to the most inspirational drummer 🙌🏽 ! Thank You for your sacrificing your time uploading this Videos to help us improve our love for drums ! Love you dude ! Now it’s time for a million Subs !
Great vid Gabe! Love the honesty....extreme levels of confidence! Those 3 keys, your skill level and your work ethic got you to where you're at today! Well done brother!
Thank you my friend!
Such a sick video!! I got a music school audition soon and this video is just hella inspiring after seeing how much you prepared in such a short amount of time. All your success is well deserved bro 🥁🥁
One of the things I’ve learned that leaves a big impression if not one of the biggest is like you said, being prepared. Know the songs you have to play inside and out.
So I’m playing my first gig next month and this shows up in my recommendation...
Very nice
Good luck, dude! Let us know how it goes!!
Good luck man
Break a leg, mine is in a few months!!!
How did u go
You inspire me hella, thank you for the amazing videos!
Awesome story dude! I hope to see you at the merch table after one of your shows!
You're really an inspiration! Keep doing you my guy ❤
Well,damn..
Im glad you did that, cuz I watched you when I was first starting out as a drummer, and cuz I Prevail is one of my fave bands.
You hella awesome,dude!
That's so cool! Thanks for sticking around!
Wow. Great life advice! Inspiring.
Thanks!!
liked it mostly for the story because, that is actually hilarious. Definitely can appreciate the effort that must have gone into it though; much props my dude!
Such a great video and awesome discussion topic, bro! Thanks for sharing your story! I get this a lot from many of my students who ask how to get to the next level, whether that be getting to college, signed to a label, getting contracted with a marching ensemble, etc. The thing that resonates with me the most here is that comment "fake it till you don't have to fake it". There's no escaping the fact, you HAVE to put in the hours and work. That daily grind is so important, but if you don't have the motivation or confidence to get there, then you're doomed to fail, regardless. Have to respect the process. Awesome video! So you mentioned you would work on your double kick stuff 6 hours a day, what types of exercises were you working on to develop your independence? I think that's something that really shows in your playing with I Prevail! Anyway, awesome video, keep up the good work bro!! 🤘👍👊
Thanks so much for the awesome comment! I'm so happy to hear that you resonated with the video. I would mostly do ladder exercises on the double kick going form quarter notes, to 8th, to 8th note triplets, to 16th notes, to 16th note triplets. As well as just straight endurance work. Then I would just slow their songs down and play them at a slower tempo and then gradually speed them up as I got better.
@@DrumBeatsOnline so then you didn't specifically work on independence stuff? That's actually pretty interesting. And definitely agree with slowing things down and building up the tempo from there. Can never go wrong with that approach!

In addition to the topic: A great book is "The Encyclopedia of Double Bass Drumming - By Bobby Rondinelli & Michael Lauren"
I love this book and I enjoy working with it. That's my literary recommendation.

Truly inspiring bro... You are soo positive and hard working..
This was an awesome share thanks for doing so bro 👍
So glad you liked it!
Excellent advice, thanks for the inspiration!
Super inspiring man! Thx for sharing!
Great story. And you are a great drummer.
I don't think anyone who isn't already playing as much as they can like you did with the church bands, etc, would be ready in terms of ability and confidence. Kudos for that on your work ethics.
“Fake it ‘till you make it”...the story of my drumming life.
Confidence is huge if you’re going to go that route. I’ve taken gigs from bands that did covers of songs I’ve never heard of.
Thanks to channels like UA-cam and Apple Music, I was able to prep well enough to make the good impression I needed to get a call back.
Now I’m the first hired gun call he makes when his regular guy isn’t available.
Great video, man!!🤘🏻🤘🏻
Ross Gillis bro the exact same with me lol. I had this country singer hit me up for gigs and I don't even jam country so the list of 62 songs they play from including his originals I've never even heard but I stayed confident, said yea and prepared myself and made it seem like I've played those songs my whole life. It's all about confidence for sure.
thank God i watched this vid thanks man!
this help me so much -new subscriber
After a couple of months I first saw this video a guy called me to play in his band. He wanted me to play jazz-rock - a style I hadn't really been played before. But I remembered this video and said "Sure, I can play it" and started to check how to play that kind of stuff and practiced as much as I had never been practiced before. We've made two records since than and now I am preparing for the third- it's so cool. I am sure I didn't dare to try it without this video. Thank you, Gabe! :)
love it man! great video
You knew you had the potential and tapped into it via hard work. Great life lesson! Not stepping out = 100% chance of not moving forward.
Wow! Thanks for sharing! Lots to learn from you!! :)
Damn that’s really sick! Awesome work man!
🙏🙏
Man, i saw you today in Nuremberg and you kicked absolute ASS. Nice job with I Prevail💪
Sooooo good content, man!!! ❤️
I will say this. If you audition for a band and get turned down (assuming they even call you back) tell them if the guy they pick flakes out give you a call and then woodshed their songs like any other band's songs and if the band calls you in for another audition then you can go in and nail it like you have been playing with them for years. Happened to me.
I had a really good audition but they said they had to audition some others then they would let me know. Later they called me in for another audition and I went in and impressed them so much that they were saying I was they best guy they had auditioned even though I had just been there a few months prior.
Like any interview, how you carry yourself before you ever get into your work experience matters too.
Dude nice Video👍
I need to work on confidence too 😜
And men your cymbalwall 😍😍
Haha thank you!
I love your content and page. Please keep putting out content.
Awesome video Gabe! :)
It's all about practice haha ;D
Haha you've got it!
Thanks man! This was a great and uplifting video!
My pleasure!!
Bless you :) Great vid!
❤️❤️
I appreciate the way u open up urself ....u are awesome
fake it till u make it
Mmhmm!
man this story is so cool and kinda motivationg, too. I love your videos !
I'm so glad you took something away from it!
That's one hell of a confession to make Gabe, but you risked it for the brisket and it worked out!
Did you get to play on the new album, or are you still just touring?
Great job dude.
So awesome! 🥁🙌🔥
❤️❤️
Love this!
You are a very inspiring musician, I don’t even play drums but just watching your vids make me understand what the life is like for a musician and I play guitar and am trying to do it for a living and this is helping me understand what I’m supposed to do. Also can’t wait to meet you and the guys on the trauma tour in Boston!!
That's so awesome Shane! I'll see you there!
Drum Beats Online can’t wait!!
Great video - fair play man, taking that gig without playing double kick pedal was ballsy!
This is actually REALLY GOOD!!!!! This is why on jam sessions, I say.... OH YEAH, I LOVE THIS SONG!!!! EVEN If I'd never heard or played the song before! Then, I get the vibe, genre and overall feel, get locked in with the bass, and play something that's SIMPLE, I knew would work! then when everything is feeling good, I add a little bit more complexity!
How and when did you break this news to the others? Been a fan since before heart vs mind and its nice to see a good dude step in for Lee
Great vid .what double bass pedal do u recomen?
This story is awesome! I have one of my own:
I was presented 2 insane gig opportunities last year that I had an extremely short time window to prepare for (1 show with The Zenith Passage on 1 month's notice, and then WHILE I was preparing for TZP I got the offer to play for Rings of Saturn the month after that AND I had another tour THE WEEK BEFORE the Rings of Saturn tour). To both of those I was like "this stuff is ridiculous I don't know how I'm going to pull this off, but I AM going to do this."
My rule is "say yes, and then figure it out". MAKE IT HAPPEN.
That's awesome!
This video deserves a two thumbs up.
I like that "fake it until you dont have to fake it anymore" concept.
Damn.
Waving from the Philippines😂😎🎵🎸
I'm so glad you resonated with that!
I read that comment awhile ago & had to laugh ! How you got the job is easy : your talented , work very hard at your craft , easy going , likable , & good looking doesn't hurt either ! Keep up the good work gabe !!!!
Haha well thank you for the kind words!
Despite the title being slightly misleading, this is a perfect video about getting the gig when you’re not the right guy for the gig. The entire video is summarized in one sentence: you are in control of your own fate. You did good by explaining how to create your own luck, and this is perfect.
I appreciate that!
Bravo for your courage man..!!
It's all about the confidence!
Hey Gabe! My band is going to be working with Tyler in the near future through a contest he and Joey Sturgis hosted! I can’t wait to get to work with him after hearing what he’s done on Trauma so far!
That's so awesome dude! Tyler is the man.
WOOOHOO ANOTHER GREAT VIDEO :)
Yeah dude I'm on the other end of the spectrum, and I'm long in the tooth as they say. I'm 45 yrs of age, and am a very experienced gigging drummer. I've been playing shows or gigs for people and money, contract stuff since im 19 yrs old. 30 yrs I've been playing and gigging man, and would love to be able to just have a few auditions. I'm super super dedicated to drums and have been to just music and musicianship in general, but practice my ass off. I'd love to hear from u and I've been watching your videos and I'm impressed. Thanks dude.
I can top that. I had 4 weeks to learn 40 songs, buy a kit and learn how to play drums from scratch. Nailed the audition and have been with my band for 3 years now. I totally lied but I just knew I could do it.
Thanks for sharing your tips and story. I really wish UA-cam was a thing back in my prime. Being 41 limits the touring gigs and so does COVID at the moment. I'd love more gigging opportunities in my city but it's hard to get gigs in a small city when you are not originally from here and the same drummers get all the good gigs even though they may not be better than you but just well known. That's why they play in 5 bands. Once again thanks for all the videos, you are really sharing the drum love and knowledge.
Honestly I’d never really thought of this aspect before. When I first heard you say that you lied to them and told them you could play double bass when you couldn’t, i didn’t know if I agreed with how you approached that, but then it made sense. Because you have to jump on every opportunity with things like this especially in the music business because successful is no easy task. What really made me realize that you made the smart move in that situation is when you think about the out come. Best case scenario, you get the gig and then you’re in a famous band!! Worst case scenario, they see that you didn’t actually know how to play double bass and they just don’t hire you, and nothing that terrible really happens besides the fact that you didn’t get the gig. So I think the big take away from this video is that you should go for every opportunity that comes your way no matter what because usually the good out weighs the bad.
i dont know where i would be if it werent for you, thank u so much Gabe :)
That sneeze had me dying man hahaha so good.
Awesome man. That’s how it’s done. You have a great ethic. It’s refreshing to see such enthusiasm and honesty.
I do this same fake and learn stuff at getting projects as a freelance web developer. it does work for me getting projects. this type of process will really take you up the ladder and opens up a lot of opportunities.. Just be careful of faking too much though, you might end up burnout of too much fake stuff to learn 😁
7:06 bless you bro 🤣
“I pushed myself”
LOL wow man so inspirational!! I’ve never heard that before!
But real talk tho: how the hell can you play your toms with the rims sticking out so far? Do you not play with rimshots on your toms?
Very inspirational video
You knew yourself and abilities. But man it was a good gamble! Lol!
Great video! So how do you feel with the double pedals now?
Bless you 😇
You're a damn hero Gabe. 😭 To be completely honest, I'm no drummer. I've just loved good rock music since my preteens. I'm a 20-something student, trying for a second degree in nursing in order to jumpstart a career. Sometimes I feel like I'm not cut out for healthcare, just like I felt that I wasn't cut out for my first degree - otherwise I wouldn't be semi-coasting or needing to go back to school. (I was surrounded by aspiring doctors and fancy-pants PhD research candidates). But then I remind myself of the stuff I was able to accomplish despite these thoughts. And honestly, if I hold onto knowing "I can, now WORK to get there," I think I'll make it through ok. "Faked" can be such a loaded word sometimes, since in the end, your lie became truth for the band. So is it really fake? 😆 I just wanted to say thanks for being my dose of inspiration today.
These are some great take-aways and I completely agree!! Keep pushing forward my friend!
Sick Ayottes
Awesome video
You got the job Gabe, because you worked hard and were dedicated. An opportunity is not a guarantee, your skill was the deciding factor.
❤️❤️
Hello,
how did you manage to get up to date with the double pedal and which exercises did you use to obtain the optimum speed in the double bass drum.?
crazy story very inspirational
Bro that Scars instrumental 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
7:06 best part!
Kidding aside, thank you for the inspiration!
Wow! That's why you looked so familiar lol. I'm the LD from ft Wayne Piers. Small world. Everything you've said here has been me with this industry. I just never said no and pushed pushed pushed preparation. Often with no time lol. Many times being thrown right into the fire with no real preparation. Here's to never saying no!
Heck yeah Brandon!
i take this advice for guitar and now I have a band after like a year and have a rehersal next week
"Extreme levels of confidence" hahah so good
Good video.Love it.👍🥁😎🇵🇷
And when did you tell the other guys that you faked it in the beginning? :D
Great story, I‘m really enjoying the new I, Prevail songs, especially Paranoid. Would love to see a playthrough of that song (or any other of the new record when it drops).
Hey Gabe! What song is playing at the 00:30 mark? I gotta download it haha. Keep up the good work! I enjoy your vids.
Scars by I Prevail
Never knew you play for that band. Ok. Ok. Respect. Thought you were just a UA-camr. The real deal I see.
Well you have to be lucky enough to be able to learn that in 4 weeks lol. I tried that and it took me...um....like 4 years lol. But I’m dumb enough that I totally couldn’t tell the difference and that it would actually take me that long vs only 4 weeks. At least I can actually play the double bass pedal now and don’t have to fake it. But, not gonna lie, learning that sucked. Awesome video! Finally something not on another lick is a breath of fresh air.
