I was physically smiling when I saw him and his student talking and just enjoying music, that was awesome and wish when I was learning clarinet was like that
This is what happens when someone who is supposed to go into music and wants to go into music, goes into music. I love this so much. As a music teacher, this is the sort of thing I want to see. Massive props, LA. Keep groovin.
This inspires me as 24 year old amateur drummer with no performing experience. I started learning off and on at 16, joined a band that I rehearsed with for 3 years at 19, but when the band broke up that was pretty much it, life can be distracting. Maybe one day I'll get my gig in the corner. Caleb is my hero, It makes me proud to see someone as young as him with so much talent.
My kid wants to be a livestock vet and I looked at her and was like THIS is it kid, not just for me as a gig singer but for you as a vet, you gotta know your stuff and you gotta be cool.
@@Milano972 Cool as in Personable.teachable and or easy to work with all while knowing when to speak up. Like you can have all the chops or sickest feel in the world but if people don't wanna be around you, you aren't gonna get a lot of calls.
Just gonna remind everyone that this guy is one of the best modern drummers alive. His style is familiar but at the same time so very distinct. His mindset is the biggest part. The man takes being a drummer from just a musical instrument to a mindset.
Retrospect is when you look back at an experience. Like “in retrospect, spitting into the wind is a bad idea”. I think you mean ‘perspective into’ what we do, meaning sharing his insight and point of view.
THIS indeed!!!! This whole channel is like, my "nerdy musical conversation" FIX." I have very few friends these days who are music nerds quite in this way. We talk music, sure, but it's not - well it's not NERDY MUSICAL CONVERSATION dang it!!! I love Sound Field for exactly this reason. They've learned a lot of the same things I learned back in the day, but they're bringing more to that, new things always, and they're real musicians, in the thick of it, you know? And I've learned so much more, ABOUT so much more, just from their videos. Not to mention the shares and links that have led me all over the place both in music and in other ways to talk about music. I love everything about this channel
@soundfield @LA - Thanks for sharing the story of how you had to choose music intentionally. It can be hard for a lot of young musicians coming up in environments that don’t always value that path. For those who are young and trying to figure out whether to stick with it or not, I think you’re setting an authentic good example.
A young friend of mine is learning to be a percussionist in school. He was playing at church and has a good sense of rythum so I gave him the word and why it was worth it. The band director thanks me. He had been taken out of school in grade school and was behind and I had helped him get caught up some so I was glad he had found something to love at school. We all have to mentor young people whenever we can.
This man is REAL and inspirational! I don’t need to want to play drums for this to give me perspective that a life in the creative arts is WORK and that you need to be there for the ART. An artist will starve with the biggest paychecks if they stop seeing the beauty in creation and LA gets that. Makes what I’ve seen him do (just on this channel!) even more amazing to me!
I just discovered this guy is from my hometown (Minneapolis, Minnesota)! He’s even affiliated with my music school, (the MacPhail Center for Music)! I want to meet this guy because I’m now a fan of his!
I said it before but I think I should say it more often, this channel brings me a lot of joy. Thank you for the amazing work you put in, and thank you for You honest and pure content. There is a lot of amazing videos out there about music but your content has a more special place in my heart. 🖤🖤🖤
I like that perspective on stealing music. As long as you reinvent it, that's what everyone's been doing, and that's how we get to better places. Kinda bothers me when people get upset on behalf of an artist for "appropriating" their stuff, when that's just what everyone does all the time, and it's what's best for all of us.
Buckner I LOVE your energy. I love your vibe and approach to jamming and working with musicians to make some better. Look I’m just a rhythm guitar but holy shit I would adore to get the chance to just jam for an hour and talk one day. I doubt it’ll happen, but a girl can dream. I love what you all do at sound field. 💕
The video of you and Caleb on the drums made me smile so big, but also made me so sad. My dad is a drummer, but my parents divorced and a couple years later my dad went to jail for several years. He disappeared from my life from like 7-17. I never got that mentorship, I tried to do drums in band in 3rd grade (started as just a snare) but the band teacher wanted to holler at my mom and she turned him down so he picked on me constantly, so I quit that pretty quick... Music is so important in my life and the fact that I can't make it kind of kills me inside.
Great to see you living your passion LA, you have a very inspiring and infectious attitude to playing drums 😎Loved your series on Dilla Beats and hip hop - taught myself how to get my head around the Dilla feel purely from your instruction videos. Peace to you and all blessings for your future 👌😀

Best thing for drummers to get work...play and authenticate as many genres as you can.Play local and regional because you can.If you get national/international gigs, work them.Think of drumming like character actors, role play the gig.Be humble and supportive of the people you work with.Remember, the drummer is the heartbeat of a band.Support the front/vocalist.
LA emphasizes the importance of being “cool”...meaning a pleasant person to work with and friendly...always seeking to expand his social & business networks (when you’re a musician, they are the same thing). That’s so important. One thing that has always held me back as a musician is my introversion and impatience...not a good combo in a field like music. But knowing this about myself, I make an overt effort to compensate...going out of my comfort zone as often I as I can and learning to keep,my mouth shut. It’s tough. I’m probably on the spectrum and was never diagnosed. Anyway, great advice for the young cats out there.
Yes, this is all true. As a professional keyboardist that distinction between "gigs and shows" is huge, understanding the perspective of what you are doing in any given situation lets you plan your life in a much clearer way. I think of it at "functional music" vs "artistic music", but it's the same. Understanding the difference allows you to make money with gigs so that you can take the steps necessary to play shows. Shows don't really pay until you can bring a lot of people out, but they help build your career in a way gigs never can.
i think thats what im missing, i need to try and get to know, understand and learn from other musicians. ive been stuck in this ditch of not knowing how to get better or learn at any sort of relatively fast pace. thank you dude this video is inspiring ❤️
I feel joy when I watch LA playing drums, but I didn't know any other stuff LA did besides the channel. He seems to be a genuinely nice person Unfortunately, I wish I could nerd talk about music - although I'm attempting to do that when asking some friends about what and why they liked/didn't like Stupid Love from Lady Gaga.

Living proof that Drummers are just as talented as any other instrumentalists
Check out Mario Duplantier, Mike Portnoy etc, hope you enjoy them
Never get the credit or recognition they deserve tho
Rhythm is what feeds you. You can know every scale, chord progression etc, but if it doesn’t get you moving then what’s the point.
I play keys and guitar but ever since I was little I loved the drums but my parents never let me
Everyone talks shit til they sit behind the kit and look like a caveman
could listen to him talk forever
No preaching. A polite, humble, positive, musical person. Well filmed and well cut. Thats a like.
