I worked for Channellock for a few years, and throughout it all. The corporate motto is as cheap as possible as fast as possible. The new x series have had too many issues and the engineers still are trying to figure it out. They don't listen to the employees that make the quality, they push for the fastest and cheapest solution just to get the product out of the factory. Their pliers are good, just the company is being run into the ground, by a fourth generation that never put the time in on the factory floor.
I've lived in Meadville most all my life. The current owners hired in people outside the family to run things and everything has gone downhill. They are actually putting the Channellock name on cheap Chinese junk. Sad to see the company go downhill. It used to be one of the best employers in Meadville and I've heard from current/former employees that things have changed and not for the better.
This tells me that whoever is running the company is in it for the short haul. They want their money now, as much as they can get, and they don't care about the future for themselves, their posterity, or their current and former employees. I saw it happen to the company I worked for and sad to see it happen to you as well.
Hello Scott! You are 100% SPOT ON!!!!! Your review was perfect. You are so right on all the points you addressed as I too feel that their is no excuse for these issues. The misalignment of the jaws when clamped was obviously an oversight in production... The warping of the handles looks to me like a heat treat issue, as they are heated and dropped into a bin the metal twists as it cools. I'm sure the boys over at Knipex and Gedore are having a good laugh right now as they bring a pair into the meeting room and joke about the flaws of the tool- As they should... This is unacceptable and anyone who tries to justify these issues are just as bad as the management who accepts this. Thanks for a great review!!
Thanks so much! Yes, I feel the same way you do. I'd be willing to pay more if the quality was a bit higher. Seems they don't understand this for some reason. I'd tell them: STOP RUSHING the product. If these were of equal quality to a set of Knipex Cobras, and they were $10-$15 more than the Knipex, I would buy the Channellocks.
ScoutCrafter I have a Pair, Use them Everyday and shop Tested , My pair is not bent or bows, You also have to take in consideration that there patents that take months to Research Not To Get Sued by another design. My pair have been amazing, the 8inch does pinch. I am not a tool collector, I use my tools
Had em loved em and had the teeth on the mechanism strip within 3 weeks. If channel lock could’ve gotten the mechanism right I’d have loved and kept them.
Not sure if maybe you got a lemon or early production model because I have a pair of these on my desk and I don't have any of the issues that you're describing.
I bought a pair of Channellock 8" linemans pliers $24.00 , cut a piece of 12-2 w/g and the blades chipped . Replaced them with a set of Tekton , cut through 10-3 w/g with ease and no problem . Go figure ... I bought them cause they was made in the good ole USA ...
I dont know what it is with channellock either but those grips for whatever reason are sharp. I love the feel of the adjustable crescent style wrenches and yes not made in USA but still similar grip and they dont sand and smooth the seam. I've had to do it and like scoutcrafter says and others why pay good money for a tool you have to adjust. I dont have baby smooth hands I work with my hands everyday and have the calluses to show for it but using these tools that digs in and creates hot spots. I'm not a glove guy never have been never will be. Yes they eventually work themself into use after awhile but I've got in the habit of quickly sanding them smooth the way they should be from factory.
I have vintage wiremasters that were made crooked from day one but they outlasted my knipex The fit and finish is not as good as the knipex but the function is better !.Sometimes fit and finish affects longevity and so far Channellocks have started to go down the tubes for fit ,finish and quality .Rough grind finish ,crooked fit and laser engraving instead of stamping their name and model number .They are just cheaping out . These hardening has its advantages but induction hardening has its advantages .Win in one way loose in another .They are damaging their hand tool name by letting out inferior products
Looks to me like how the other tool company you show deals with out of alignment ends/noses is they put a raised pad on the sides of the nose then grind them thus making perfect alignment even if it wasn't prior. Maybe Channellock should do this too. The bent handles come from heat treating and IMO so long as not excessive is no concern to me.
Think your review is spot on I'm not from the USA but have used channel lock for over 30 years as they simply do the job required I've tried others and my old ones are anti pinch so how could they go backwards. Hope I don't loose them
I have almost the same problem with traditional chanellock 6” 9.5” 10” 12” all of them are very good pliers but quality is not at all the same as Knipex 🤷🏻♂️
The first thing that I would have done is to grip a piece of stock or a bolt head in the jaws and see if the deflection presents. If its only when the tool is being used jaw to jaw then its not really an issue. That said Channellock is a corner hardware store brand not a tradesman tool.
I think your review was spot on. Esp the part about CL trying to compete with Knipex, Klein, Milwaukee or any other powerhouse brands...Seems like they are rushing these products through R&D to get them on the shelves. I am a HUGE fan of CL tools, they are cheap, well made and get the job done for HALF the price of the big guys named above! - I am certainly a fan of their Griplock series, where they made there pump pliers heads more on an angle, like the 'Cobra" style from Knipex. Talk about competition, Even Klein has a pair of "Cobra-Style" pliers, They have a yellow handle, NOT a red one and GUESS where they are made?! You guessed it! Germany! LOL
I have found the fit and finish of the tools is not the same as they were 30 years ago. Their tools now look and feel cheap and have sharp edges on many of the tools right out of the sealed plastic packs they come in.
My 20 & 30 year old Channellocks still go to work with me. But my home toolbox has just been filled with their replacements: ‘Tsunoda,’ ‘King TTC’ Japanese tools. The quality in craftsmanship is incredible - and the prices comparable.
Great review. Sad to see this being done. I know I would never buy a Knipex pair because I don't use pliers enough to justify the cost. I have a feeling the majority of the market is like this. We are not all mechanics. I have seen some reviews of push button pliers where the outcome was the button was not all that fantastic of an advantage. But marketing-and-the-mob is what it is and people flock to new ideas. I can see where Channlel Lock designers/marketers felt compelled to make these push button pliers since the market has benn flooded by other companues making/selling their own versions. I am sure the "new idea" mindset has hurt Channel Lock sales for normal pliers. I can almost hear Channel Lock designers debating over saying they just have to get a piece of the pie vs. trying to justify the cost/set up of producing a great quality set of pliers to actually rival Knipex quality. Personally, thanks to Scoutcrafter, I just grab my Eifel plierench and don't worry about it 😄
..yes everybody is trying to copy the Cobra design, and they are good and have their place..however, having owned small and large Knipex Cobra and Alligator pliers for years, I must say I heavily prefer the Alligator design...not a quick, one hand adjust like the Cobras, but for most uses I want a plier that is strong, sturdy, grips like h@ll, and can withstand a lot of pressure...and for me, the Alligators just grip better, are stronger, sturdier, and can take more abuse than the Cobras...the little button and side-leaf spring on the Cobras are more fragile, as are the finer teeth...and they flex more when really biting down...the Cobras have their place, but 3 out of 4 times, I reach for the Alligators...
I agree with you. Jaws need to meet right and handles need to be in line. I own 12 inch and 16 inch channelocks. I like them. I need to get a smooth jaw set. I may get knipex plier wrench. I am disappointed these new pliers are so poorly made.
No your not expecting too much - that's not acceptable for the money you spent. Fit and Finish IS the quality in my view. Hard to accept that was missed as it is so visually obvious.
You got that right! It should be a law you have to make high quality things that have USA on them. By the way they are making dumb laws we might as well make one worth a crap!
Knipex is the gold standard. I carry I think a 6” cobra every day. That fit and finish on the CL is horrendous. Must have been a Friday end of shift product. think the pinch point is a hallmark design in all channel lock pliers. Never been a fan. I have a bunch but they are tool box queens. They never get used unless I loan them out.
g s I would say way better, def better than knipex but the 8 inch pinch but, The 10inch- this model Doesnt really pinch and you can see the other peoples comment saying theirs works just fine and how they have no problems, I use my in the show and hold up!
i love the idea but the knipex brand is not playing with quality channel lock is playing games these broke on me in 1 day of use and it happened to some1 else on here look it up they need to give the first time buyers a new 1 when they fix it cause we all was happy to support the usa but this is what we get
I dint like the grips but ill give them a try i perfer my older channkocks i have and i resently looked into doyal but ill try these and see i see many failure points
Dewalt has this function on there pliers and that was 2 years ago. Seems like somebody is trying to market new technology off the backs of one of the best tool manufacturers in the world second only too Milwaukee. To each is own although I don't have any issue at all paying for the quality I get in return. When you see the technology on a Milwaukee pair of Vice Grips that they have recently released you will then understand why I said what I did about Dewalt & Milwaukee's tools.
I’ve been bitching about the quality of channellock tools for 5 years now. Absolute horrific quality control at their facility. Bought a pair of needle nose the other day cause that’s what was available, and I had to sort thru the 4 alike pairs to find the one that didn’t look like a blind person did the final finishing on it. Channellock is NFG anymore to me.
I feel your pain. Unfortunately "Made in USA" is no longer a sign of quality (not all but in general). After years of using hand tools and power tools as a General Contractor, I have learned you look for one of two labels, Made in Germany or Made in Japan. These two countries seem to still take pride in their craftsmanship. Whether it is Knipex, Wera, Wiha, Festool from Germany or the Japanese made (Not China made) Makita.
Hey Man! I actually saw your videos on these pliers. Channellock used to be a solid option, but it seems like they’re just mailing it in on these new models. They could have done something outstanding with these, but nope.
It really is too bad about the quality of these because I really prefer to buy American made and I almost bought a pair of these (my 12" pump pliers have seen better days) but I didn't because the head looks massive and the handles are weird, in my job I find myself often working in tight spaces so I don't think I would like them even if they where higher quality
Maybe ebay wasn't the best place to purchase. You could buy the same from a reputable vendor and compare. If it ends up that the ebay item was defective you could take it up with the seller.
My Jaws do not do that by the way 🤨My pair does not look like how it is bent, I use the pliers all day everyday, The 8inch pinches my fat on my fingers, 10 inch not so much BUT My pair is really holding up amazing! Also, You have to take in thought Patents such as many many many companies have, you cant hve a product the copy a design 🤷🏻♂️😂 takes months of researching what will not get you sued.
i would much rather channelock make a better product even at a higher price point if they have to than pay less and get a seriously inferior product. i think they are focusing too hard on trying to produce it for a specific price point rather than making a good product and pricing appropriately
These tool companies spend their money on hiring a bunch 20 somethings sales people that repeat the rehearsed company garbage that they are taught. Meanwhile the quality of the tools suffer. Unfortunately only %5 of people that buy tools actually know quality when they see it and feel it. So these companies go off of their legacy name and put out crap for the %95. I have never seen a sales pitch for knipex but I look past all of my channel locks and irwins and go for the knipex when I need a set of pliers.
Based on your video I'll say the Knipex appear far superior. Just because they are Made in the USA doesn't mean they are great. Those old Craftsman 36T teardrop ratchets were Made in the USA and were complete junk. To be fair I once bought a new pair of Knipex needle nose pliers and the tips bent on the first use. I'l never purchase another set of Knipex needle nose pliers after that incident.
well look at em! you buy some star trek looking pliers and expect working man quality. aint happening. I'll stick with regular old 420s, 430s, and 440s
Channellock pliers..... made in u.s.a. with Chinese steel and made by blind unhappy employees who feel they don't earn enough money per hour and who don't care that their ship is sinking.....poor quality control if its even a thing there......lol
Not pronounced kernipex, it pronounced nipex fella. Look good those channelocks. The knipex have their own problems like the body is big than your average pair of engineers pliers. So not great for accesing tight spaces in boilers
I have the Irwin version of these pliers. Got them at Lowe's, Hard to adjust, hard to use, have tried other push to adjust pliers and hate them. It is a poorly designed gimmick. I have a brand new pair in the package that have been laying around too long and can't return them. They live in the scrap metal bin. Junk!
You are 100 % on the money my friend
I worked for Channellock for a few years, and throughout it all. The corporate motto is as cheap as possible as fast as possible. Knipex pliers are awesome noone can beat them.In a world of cutting corners they have preserved their quality.
Had em loved em and had the teeth on the mechanism strip within 3 weeks. If channel lock could’ve gotten the mechanism right I’d have loved and kept them.
I agree 100%. Made In USA should mean TOP QUALITY
As well as made in Germany or made in Japan
Not sure if maybe you got a lemon or early production model because I have a pair of these on my desk and I don't have any of the issues that you're describing.
MegaDman34 same here, Everyday use and shop tested 🤘🇺🇸
I really appreciate you making this video.

You are spot on. I love USA made ..the supreme quality should back up the usa made label.👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Should but doesn't, Knipex are a much better tool
I have a newer set of these and I love them. They get a hell of a bite and I grab these before I grab my knipex.
Another reason to buy from a store, where you can see what you're getting.

If true. Made in USA needs to be high quality. In the USA we strive for excellence, and perfection. Channellock do better.
Not True On 10" Knipex Cobra Pliers (The Price). Knipex Can Be Found On Amazon For Less Than $30.00.
What Kuh-nife do you carry
It's a german name, That's how the company who makes those products pronounces it.
The first thing that I would have done is to grip a piece of stock or a bolt head in the jaws and see if the deflection presents. If its only when the tool is being used jaw to jaw then its not really an issue.

Right! If you watch the Channellock factory tour on UA-cam, they are rushing those tools through each station as fast as they can!
Scoutcrafter sent me. Good honest fair review
Well THANKS for watching!!
I like the offer from Crescent the teeth are specially designed to grip better.
Thanks good review
I also like channellock tools but old school ones
Which wristwatch do you wear in video ? Thanks
My 20 & 30 year old Channellocks still go to work with me. But my home toolbox has just been filled with their replacements: ‘Tsunoda,’ ‘King TTC’ Japanese tools. The quality in craftsmanship is incredible - and the prices comparable.

Knipex Cobras for me. I wish these could grip like the cobras though. Sad they can’t put the attention to detail into these pliers like Knipex does
You got that right! It should be a law you have to make high quality things that have USA on them. By the way they are making dumb laws we might as well make one worth a crap!
Is this why you took down the "defending the honor of channellock tools" video?
Knipex over powered
we have a saying in holland: german solidness
Knipex is the gold standard. I carry I think a 6” cobra every day. That fit and finish on the CL is horrendous. Must have been a Friday end of shift product. think the pinch point is a hallmark design in all channel lock pliers. Never been a fan. I have a bunch but they are tool box queens. You're right!
I pocket carry my Knipex 10" Alligator Pliers Daily at Work' luv them' 💪😏
This just hurts.
How do they grip? I could easily look past any slight fit and finish issue if they are a good tool to use
g s They grip freaking insane, i have no idea whats going on with his pair but mine have been holding up in shop use every day,
How do they grip compare to the originals?
g s I would say way better, def better than knipex but the 8 inch pinch but, The 10inch- this model Doesnt really pinch and you can see the other peoples comment saying theirs works just fine and how they have no problems, I use my in the show and hold up!
They do grip very well.
Hate to say it but those look like a pair of Milwaukee pliers. I think the GLS pliers they make compete with the Knipex, for way cheaper.
I just can't find the sweet spot with plier wrenches and don't like cobras for what I use them for these look ideal.
i love the idea but the knipex brand is not playing with quality channel lock is playing games these broke on me in 1 day of use and it happened to some1 else on here look it up they need to give the first time buyers a new 1 when they fix it cause we all was happy to support the usa but this is what we get
I dint like the grips but ill give them a try i perfer my older channkocks i have and i resently looked into doyal but ill try these and see i see many failure points
Channellock fit and finish have always been garbage! But a decent price.
Send them back and get another pair.

10" Knipex Cobras are $26.94 on homedepot.com just FYI.
Thank You, Sir!
they could have added these features, and kept thee old channellock look and feel
I feel your pain. Unfortunately "Made in USA" is no longer a sign of quality (not all but in general). I bought these also and the push button lock snapped in two the first day I have 2 videos showing it
Hey Man! I actually saw your videos on these pliers. Channellock used to be a solid option, but it seems like they’re just mailing it in on these new models. They could have done something outstanding with these, but nope.
Update? Did you hear back from them?
No Sir! (crickets chirping)

The knipex might be $5 more tops
My Jaws do not do that by the way 🤨My pair does not look like how it is bent, I use the pliers all day everyday, The 8inch pinches my fat on my fingers, 10 inch not so much BUT My pair is really holding up amazing!
Also, You have to take in thought Patents such as many many many companies have, you cant hve a product the copy a design 🤷🏻♂️😂 takes months of researching what will not get you sued.
I will stick with my 10" Knipex Alligator Pliers' They bite like a Shark' I Always Pocket carry them Daily at Work'
Diferent proposers pliers
i would much rather channelock make a better product even at a higher price point if they have to than pay less and get a seriously inferior product. i think they are focusing too hard on trying to produce it for a specific price point rather than making a good product and pricing appropriately
I do believe you are right, My friend!
It looks like a poor attempt to modernize or keep up with the rest of the big boys.
These tool companies spend their money on hiring a bunch 20 somethings sales people that repeat the rehearsed company garbage that they are taught. Meanwhile the quality of the tools suffer. I think the jaws are kind of fat and wide hard to fit in certain areas
Not looking good channellock....what went wrong with these pliers??...
The handle mouldings aren't very neat either.
bad pair, send them back.

I got my cobras for 25 dollars
Sweet Deal!
Wrong on the pronunciation my friend. Go to their website, watch a few of their videos.
Junk!
Crap Mul Stank!!! Broke 1st Time Using Them!!! Watch Tools and Trash Video!!!
Cuh- nip-ex?? Knipex; pronounced nipex
Wrong. Go to their website, watch a video. Hear the pronunciation right out of their own mouth.
@@scottstoolthoughts3190 they say it both ways it seems, split about 50/50
@@rickc.4294 no they say it Kuhnipex. You are wrong.
