Lord and Lady Braybrooke are taking a trip to their London townhouse so it's a good opportunity for Mrs Crocombe to ensure her kitchen is in order. There's washing, cleaning and polishing to be done. Everything must be suitably prepared for when the family and staff return to Audley End House.

I think at that time, the dairy maid may save some buttermilk after churn butter to relieve the chaffed hand due cleaning & hot water... or some girls maybe already use some cream on their hand every night. at that time, they already had some cream for skincare regime, so maid use cheap cream is maybe already establish

Your hands get used to it. I work on a horse yard and I doubt much of our cleaning soaps have changed from Mrs C's day. My hands aren't soft, but they aren't bleeding either. They're also really clean from the saddle soap and hot water (no Covid here!).

The hot water was not the problem, the concocted lye burnt the skin to the flesh.
Try soaking your hands in hot Vanish ( Not!) and watch for results...

It's like this channel is reading my mind! Mrs. Crocombe inspired me to ask for a set of copper bowls (I've made the fluffiest quiches ever with their help), and while I've been fairly diligent, they needed polishing. I had copper cleaner on my shopping list, but I tried the lemon and salt method and they look brand new! Scratch a nasty chemical compound off the list!
