Every man, regardless of his strength should be made to do manual labor for one year. Too many men today grow to adulthood without ever wielding a pick, running a jackhammer, or shoveling ten hours a day. It builds character and makes you realize that what you do for a living doesn’t define a man.
Very glad to hear you recognizing your guy’s hard work very important. Great crew and excellent work, so much tougher and more involved when you can’t use heavy equipment!
When i saw how sloppy the winch was spooled the crane rigger in me winced lol but it beats the hell out of packing those buckets. A guy should put some sort of cage infront of the guy running the winch incase the line parts its gonna hit that guy right in the teeth

Great job on a tough project! Love the winch. Just a small tip when you pour the footings next time keep all of them level with stepped increments. The one on a slope creates too many angle cuts. (Mason for 12 plus years)
In the space they had to work, sometimes its easier for the guys to build "footings" on a slope, it's less time consuming imo, cutting blocks for that rake is way easier than building steeped footings...Blocky and bricky for over 25 years, can build footings too.
THIS! Is The work of an experienced contractor. coming from an experienced heavy civil engineer operator who has seen many large foundations. The access was probably just as hard as where it was located. if only some landscapers could look at this from UA-cam and take example.
I enjoy watching your videos. I don't do any of that work but it is entertaining and informative. You have a great crew. That winch and trolley system is genius.
I saw the finished product and it was some of the best concrete work I have seen in my life. This was not an easy job and you knocked it out of the park.
It's hard, if not impossible, for anyone who has never done this type of work to imagine just how brutally hard every aspect of this is. Just the logistics of this job adds an another dimension, that skid, trolley & winch system for moving material & all that manual digging & moving dirt in 5 gallon buckets, oh please! That narrow, hilly street that requires cement trucks to back up & short tempered neighbors. And keep in mind each one of those 8X8X16 block weighs about 27 pounds. Bet those guys sleep good.
Nice job. Excellent use of proper sized steel reinforcing bar work. Yes on the horizontal bars too. I am surprised that the engineer didn't call for piers in the footing though. Still heller strong the way you have put it together though. I'm guessing that with the steel sticking up through the top of the retaining wall that the wall continues up to create a fence.

Great job on the quality project. Thank you for the useful tips. A question for you after watching your video. My contractor has build my 3-feet tall retaining wall without siding the cinder block with mortar, instead they just stacked them all together (it has vertical rebars though) and then fill those holes with concrete. No siding, no grouting. They said that the siding is not necessary as eventually the wall will be covered with veneer ledge stone. But my common sense tells me without siding it makes whole structure less sturdy. I was wondering if my contractor has any idea on their job? Or am I overly cautious for 3-ft tall retaining wall? thank you!
