I have absolutely never been able to cast a bait caster reel. "Never". When I was younger I did occasionally fish. Mid life I never had much time but could never master a bait caster. Now I'm 70 years old. Sir, this may not mean much to you but now after watching you on UA-cam I'm casting a bait caster. This means everything to me. You've made something I couldn't achieve possible. I know this doesn't mean much to a lot of people but to me it's everything. I appreciate you. Thanks
"You fish for you, and not anybody else." Best quote ever for fishing.
totally agree
I just bought one today. Spent about 10 minutes putting new line on it and went to my pond before watching how to actually cast. One cast and the backlash was so terrible that I cut my losses and went back up to the house. This video really helped, thank you!😂
Hahahahaha that was my exact experience! I'm glad to know I'm not the only one that happened to.
i was so exctied it was my first time getting a baitcast so i through it at some open field and i watched 100 tutorials about how to tune it and everything and still i got the worst back lash
My rules for fishing. Bring baitcaster and spinning reel. First cast with baitcast reel, make large backlash explosion, throw reel on ground. Finish day out with spinning reel. Catch nothing.
😂😂😂😂 I’m a spin cast fan!!
Just did this yesterday morning and lost a $14 whopper plopper
Ha, this is exactly what happened to me on my last fishing trip.
😂😂
Lmao 😂❤ yassss
You are the only youtuber that taught me this thoroughly
Wow! Thanks. I'd look at my nice baitcaster everytime I walked into the garage, and just laugh at the $225 wasted a few years ago. But damsun (that's the only mandarin I know!) I was in the backyard tonight made about 50 casts not one bird nest! By the end I was gettin it out 30 yards or so. Guess who will be carrying 2 rods going forward. Can't retire the spinning reel, but once I learn this the spinner will take 2nd chair.
I have 2 Black Max reels as well and I have been trying and trying different settings with moderate luck at casting consistently without any backlash. But Yesterday, after watching this video, I went out to my favorite pond and spent 2 hours FISHING instead of fighting birdnests. AWESOME. Thank you
That fish 3.50min in made me laugh for the first time today. 👍
@Robinson Serrano it was real
A year later, hope your laughing more buddy. Have a good day
lmao
X2 made me laugh "the dummy fish" he just wanted to be on camera 📸
Just bought my first baitcaster last week, can't wait to try it out.
"Oh shit that's a bad one.." 😂😂😂 Yep, that's me.
Great seminar! Thanks! 👍🏻
Nothing worse than picking out a backlash and a fish strikes. Good video.
Just reel it in. Makes zero difference.
Thank you so much for this video!!! Just bought a bait caster and thought I'd never figure it out. With this video and a few throws I feel like I got it down packed!!!
Bout too try mines out for the first time seems like everyone using these rods now and every video I watch they pulling in fish
thats not how its supposed to work. you lose a lot of distance by setting the tension so high and you'd be better off without a bait caster
This is the best baitcast real casting video I've ever seen No need for thumbing, this is golden!
What a beast sunfish... That crankbait is almost as big as him....
"NOT IN MY LAKE"
Thanks for making a complete clearly video on setting up and using a baitcaster. Look forward to seeing more of your videos.
I purchased an Abu Garcia 5000-D 47 years ago and I’ve never fished w/it. Didn’t know how to set the “drag and tension” that you have shown. Been using open faced reels ever since. I’ve kept it clean, so now I’ll set it up and go fishing. Thanks a bunch.
This is how I set up my first bait caster. I thought this was how everyone was doing it, lol. The only time I’ve done differently is with my Curado DC. With that one I only eliminated the side to side play. I probably sacrificed distance but the headaches have been minimal using this method. Good video!
How is the Curado DC? I'm considering getting one. Does it make baitcasting easier?
RedJerk5 Yes, it absolutely does. The only thing you need to do, after the initial setup, is remembering to stop the spool with your thumb as your bait/lure hits the water. If you don’t, the spool will overrun. But once setup, you can tie on anything and not have to change any settings on your reel.
Just started fishing (son bought me a setup for my birthday). I was havng somebacklash issues yesterday, so watched a dozen tutorials this morning. This was the most helpful. I have the Black Max setup in the first lesson, so even more helpful. So many vids touch on the magnetic brake, but don't actually say why it should be adjusted. I can't wait to get back over to our spot.
Step 1: Tune the shit out of it
Step 2: Done.
Always worked for me 🤷🏻♂️
amen, its really not that hard I thought myself when I was 12 at a pond one summer
I just learned something new thanks for sharing man✌👍
I just got the Abu promax combo today (my very first baitcaster ever) and tried to cast with it. It works for me when i remember to use my thomb. But i keep forgetting the stupid thumb thing (have always used spinning gear) and get backlaches gallore. Tomorrow i will give it a try again using your style of settings.
If it works i will give you a thombs up and keep subscribe to your channel, -AND tell everbody to watch your videos. If it dont work, you will get a thumb down and be unsubscribed. Best regards from Denmark. NEXT DAY UPDATE: It worked, it actually worked!! Your methode to set the brakes really worked for me and i can cast about 30-40 meters with a 20g spoon and not have a single backlash all day long without using my thomb. THANK YOU SO MUCH. I will keep subscribe to your channel, give you a thombs up and tell everybody i know about your channel. Thanks again bro and take care. PS: Only downside to this is that now i want a Westin W8 rod and a Daiwa Zillion reel😂😂
I bought my first bait caster today, and I didn’t use it because I didn’t know how and did not want to have a bad time. And this is the first video I watched! So thank you!!! Fingers crossed for tomorrow
They take practice dont use braid until you get use to mono as mono is easier to get the bird nests out of. Also make sure anyrime you change lures you set the caster for that lure it should slowly drop to the ground and when it hits the spool should also stop
I started of with an Ambassadeur 5000. That was the reel that taught me to undo "birds nests". Nawdays I cast it without any brakes at all, I've taken the weight out and it casts like a dream.
Dude...same, exact, thing, as me. My first ever baitcaster was an ambassador 5000 when I was a kid. Knew nothing of braking, spool tension, any of that. I knew the little knob on the side helped me out a bit and that’s that. But I used it for years and that reel taught me everything I now know about baitcasting feel. Sometimes I think guys get to be too reliant on their gear. A “good” baitcaster cant just be comfortable, reliable and long casting...it HAS to help you out as well. Backlashing becomes the brakes’ fault rather than just “something that happens sometimes” or “pilot error”.
Thank you sir, you just gave me hope! I have two engineering degrees but never figured out the baitcaster, your video was I needed so that it make sense. Many thanks!!
Dude u saved me!!!♥️♥️♥️ I just got my first baitcaster and u helped me!! Now I am ready to go fish!! Thanks bud!! Tight lines my friend!!
So glad I found this video!! was about to give up on my baitcaster because I just could not get used to using my thumb to stop the line. definitely going to give it another go with the tips used here. THANK YOU!!
Super helpful video, I just got my first baitcaster and wasn’t able to cast it very far without making the line spool out. Within the first five minutes of this video, I was able to cast as far as I can with no errors. Thank you very much 👍🙏
100% agree I literally spend the past 1 and a half thinking about returning it my combo setup. After watching this video I stepped outside and did the adjustments and man I felt like a pro! Great video.
@@chrisarchila exactly, just went fishing today and it’s even better to cast then my old open face. Life saver
He's casting with the wind in the video which is why he's casting so far
Today was the first time i ever tried bait casting. i was going to give up then found this video . thanks man fantastic.
7:16 very wise words my man keep it up!!!! They're just mad they get backlashes.
Just got an SLX. First batcaster. I was away for a week on a fishing trip and had lots of time to practice. Still working on casting distance but overall I love the reel.
I bought the blackmax and upgraded it with spoolspeed bearings. The smoothness of the reel is incredible and ive caught over 20 +4lb bass and at least 50 3lb with no problems.
I upgraded my Blackmax with spool hi-speed bearings too, I agree on smoothness but I'm not finding any difference in distance. You? How far are you casting your baits? Me, 30-35 yards and that's pushing it.
@@alanaho4915 i can almost cast the spool off with some baits, i also clean and lubricate the bearings after some long use.
Hmmmm, just like Scott's vids. I wonder what I'm doing wrong? It's just not this reel my others the same. Thanks for replying!
Great video. I’ve shared this with a few friends who have had a hard time learning how to use a bait caster
Love your videos you shoot straight from the hip!! Tell it like it is!! Deal with it!! Lol
thanks brother :) My real career has nothing to do with the fishing industry so I dont have to kiss anyone's ass or hold anything back! lol
Lol I love it!! Keepin all 100!! Keep the videos coming!! Best reviews on the tube!!
I just purchased my 1st bait cast reel. A SHIMANO CURADO DC 200 HQ. and I know nothing about bait cast reels other give me 2 so I can cast twice and then keep busy the rest of the day working out backlash.
I'm 57 years old this month and all my life I've used canepoles, jigging poles and spinning reels 9ther than the zebco 101 from back in the day when they actually made a badass little reels *all brass inside
Don't get me wrong I fish but I'm a catch and keep guy fill the freezer guy. As I mentioned I've used canepoles, jigging poles, spinning reels, jugs, yo/yo's trot lines, limb lines and hoop nets. So this whole idea of catch and release and bait cast reels 100% new to me.
I was watching other videos but this explanation and instruction is the best. Keep it up!
I just got my first baitcaster today and will be taking it out tomorrow I picked up the Abu Garcia Black Max I learned a lot from this video thank you
Nice demo. The best demo ever than other blog
I bought my first baitcaster today... the black max... excellent tutorial, thank you!
Just picked up my first baitcasting set up today…oddly enough I’m using the SAME SETUP as you in this video…Berkley lightning rod and abu garcia blackmax real. Can’t wait to start using it. This video is very informative and I thank you sir
Thanks for the tips from a former spinning real user and now a bait caster. Helpful!
Good teaching brooo.. I realy have a lot of trouble with my baitcaster. But after seing this content. And now i have follow everything you said.
Gonna try this out later on today. I've been watching similar videos all week and have had a few practice sessions in my backyard, but I've still been getting the occasional backlashes. I'd heard that if you cranked down on the tension too much, it would prevent a few more backlashes, but you'd lose casting distance. Well, you sure seem to be casting it plenty far in the video!
I wish I'd saw this years ago. I have two black max reels and had just about give up on em for spinning reels. Buddy this video really helped out alot!
A buddy just gave me my first bait caster today, this video is great! Cant wait to rig it up tonight and do some test runs
Buying a baitcaster after this. Thanks been fishing for years and wanted to try this video has given me more confidence
Thank you for doing this Video, I’m getting back into fishing after over a Decade and the new Baitcasting Reels are way different than my old Abu Ambassadeur 5600. I normally use a 6’6 rod and I think I’m going to have to go with at least a 7 maybe. I’m not getting hardly any Backlash after watching this on the Brakes thank you. Stay safe my Friend Semper Fidelis
Just found your video, it is the best basic easy to understand lesson on setting up your baitcasting reel. With all the cast you made i would not fish that lake. There is only one bluegill in the whole lake! ;)
Wow thank you sir.... its a big wow and big help for me... When I watch this video I grab my bait caster and try what you tell about how to cast it without a backlash and the result makes me cry... I waste to many lines in a my past fishing, but now I can cast it without a headache... Thank you very much
Good vid.... I didn’t realize the mag brake could be tweaked back after the spool was adjusted. Thanks, liking the vid
Thank you, I never knew how the bait caster worked, new subscriber and I like the video!
Just bought a Lew's Mach Pro combo today. This was the first video to pop up. Man was it helpful. Thanks!
Love this tutorial, best one I've seen.
Just got a black max for Fathers day.Took it to Alabama Point to try it out and what do ya know? I got backlash 1st cast.Threw it in the truck in frustration and headed home.better luck next time
I just bought an abu Garcia black max combo for my birthday and really like it, no backlashes so far!
Cool video bro!
Just orderd exactly these two reel without knowing this video. These two reels will be my first baitcasters. Love to see how easy casting with these reels can be! Thanks mate!
My bait caster is laying in bottom of a lake some where
Lol
Mines in someone else's hands... Went inside to grab some bait and when I came back outside, my rod was gone.... Tis a sad day I went through.
Same w my ugly stick
ha ha
Lol mine in lake also
This video just made so much better sense for my new Tica titanclaw…. Centrifugal brakes are all off now in one afternoon of casting….
I just got the Black Max combo at walmart yesterday bcause i had good grades and now i cant wait to use it and do what u said. THANK YOU
finally after 1 billion video how to use baitcaster. this video worth on top 1 explaination
That was absoluetly my first bait caster
thanks so much! I never understood why I was having so many backlash problems. I guess you should reset it when you change to differently weighted lures right?
Great video! Thank you, I'm now casting consistently without back lashes.
Best video I've seen on someone explaining this to me. 👍
Practice, practice and more practice and watcing the reel tests informative videos will get you hooked on baitcasters!
you got the thumbs up at 7:16 from me, good shit buddy. keep on fishin!
as soon as i heard this i went straight to the comments. didnt take very long to find this comment lol. good stuff
Dude is so good he caught a fish by accident and was annoyed by it lmao
Hey great video im glad i came across this channel i bought my first baitcaster now i can't wait to go fishing👍🏾💯
just stumbled upon this video and I never thought of setting my caster this way. Def going to try it out
Nice, thanks that solved my frustrations.. I'm new to baitcaster and about to give up until I see this video.. Awesome 😊
I bought my first baitcaster from walmart yesterday. It's a Lews Reactor reel on a 6'10 Lews Laser rod and I spooled with 10lb Stern Mono. I figured buying a little better set up would help. I took it out and backlashed every cast almost. Not giving up though gonna go try this today
U get any backlash
When I was young I was fishing with an open faced reel and walked up on what was at the time a four hundred dollar rod and reel. Looked all around and no one was fishing, I just found a serious setup. I started out at age 13 with a Shimano currado 201b and an amazing rod to match. The b part of the reel name means it's a left handed reel, which I just happen to be. I caught literally thousands of fish with that setup and still have it today, working (although needs to be rebuilt). Still the reel is sold for between 120 used and over 200 new in box.
Wish i was that lucky
TheMannChannel yooo that’s my rod. Nah I’m playing. You lucky fuck😂
I started with the black max but the first one I got the spool tension didn't work at all so had to get another one but after that watched this video and it was a massive help you saved me alot of stress and head ache thank you
u cant explain this any better, just bout the same baitcaster. thank you bud
I have the SLX Bait Caster also, love the reel and that’s how I set up mine. Great Vid.
Just started using a bait caster. You saved me a lot of trouble
Ohh great content. So honest you are. Love from India
Awesome video. Your expertise is greatly appreciated.
I have two Abu Garcia Hank Parker signature series baitcasters and a Abu Garcia Silver Max baitcaster. Love both of them. Easy to adjust and cast.
Man, baitcasters are my nemesis. I've used them many times over the last 40+ years of fishing and ive never been able o figure them out. I recently picked up a new one and had nothing but problems with birds nests. My buddy was borrowing my spinning reels for his family to use so i was stuck untangling line all day. 😡
My first baitcaster is a dawia aird100hl from japan. Tried to use whatever 6lb braid was on it from whoever in Japan, definitely needed a re-spool!
Thank you so much I literally just got a big caster reel not even two days ago and you help me out a lot thank you very much
“Shut the hell up” is the fishing quote of the day.. 😂💪🏻
I subbed 👍🏻
Thanks for the video. I've never liked these reels but it's worth giving a shot when taught like this.
Nice video on baitcasting kind of new to it very informative will use techniques until I get better thanks again man!👍🙏
Great info bro...the first time i got a bird nest.... it's in my tackle box....lol....... i can now begin to use my bait caster....
Great demonstration of how gravity works. You get the same no-backlash result whether you drop it in front of you or many yards away.
I started with a Cheap bait caster , I put it on a Abu Garcia devil bait caster variant and some spiderwire in olive green. I learnt how to cast with braid so when I bought a blackmax combo I definitely got an upgrade
Thank you for your efforts! Great demonstrations and information.
In my hometown in malaysia, we used to go fishing for mangrove jacks in the night, casting live minnows for the bite..i was fairly new to baitcasting reels that time and basically learnt how to cast in the dark
It was pretty hard but it really helps accellerate the learning, especially how to use your thumb.. if you can cast well in the dark u'd do waay better in the daylight
Like every fishermen in the UK I started with spinning reels but after watching so many American fishing videos I decided to buy my first baitcaster which was an el cheapo eBay special reel that said shishmano and I stuck it on an Abu Garcia devil casting rod but on a holiday to Dorset I saw and bought myself my first decent baitcasting setup which was the Abu Garcia black Max combo
Dude thank you so much I needed this I was getting so mad until you helped me out
Nice video lots of info for a beginner-thank you
i still have a black max because its all i can afford. i also backlashed 2 days in a row having to cut the line and put new line on it both times. thank you for this
Thanks brother I love ur attitude !!! I ain't fishing for nobody else, sthu !!! 😅😂🤣😜
this is an amazing lesson for someone like me who is new to this whole thing thanks
Does this actually work I’m scared to try it haha
This is an excellent video helped me set up my Abu Garcia max x baitcaster
Great vid! I finally bought my first baitcaster but I've used my dad's baitcaster before. Got many birds nest but watching more UA-cam vids, I think I know all the knobs that are important. If I keep getting birds nest, I'm just going to follow your video for now lol.
That green sunfish was funny. Guess it was a top water kind of day there eh? BFS with a tiny popper might be the ticket. With that wind coming in, I wonder how a tiny spinner bait, or inline spinner would do. Last time I was at a spillway, a nice little goggle eye, nailed a tiny homemade spinner bait, on the Scorpion BFS, and 4'6 UL shakespeare. I just wish we had miles of nice rocky creeks to walk here, but we seem to lack that in south jersey. I have the Tatula Ct on the MH set just like that to where you can cast it and the spool stops when the lure hits the water. It works like that with some 1/4 oz homemade inline spinners I've made. Casts those wonderfully! I even got my dad to try it out with one of my homemade poppers, and he was turned off to baitcasters years ago, because he kept having trouble with it. He was like wow, it works, it wasn't like the reel he tried years ago. He still mostly uses spinning gear.
I didnt even think about topwater, I do have some gunfish 75s I should use more
Thank you so much for explaining this man. I've been using spinning reels my whole life and recently saw baitcasters and was interested in them because of how much further they cast and the gear ratio etc. (I just feel like they are way better to use depending on the type of fish you fish for) I fish for bass mostly, rarely I will also fish trout but I have a spinner for that. I was so intimidated using my baitcaster reel for the first time. Set it all up, tried using my thumb and just got horrible backlash so I put the whole setup aside and pulled out the spinner lol. I had no idea that you could TRULY dial it in PERFECTLY like this. Going to be trying it in a couple of days! Wish me luck!
How’d it go bro?
@@Maximilianguyen Hey thanks for the follow up! It went great! Thanks to your video, I dialed in the baitcaster and now have ZERO backlashing issues and can cast farther than ever! I've caught 9 bass in 3 days!
I needed this video lesson! I had pretty much taken the baitcasters out of the running for a new reel. Now, thanks to this video I'm putting them back in contention in my future lineup. I'll have to watch this a couple more times but I'll get the basics enough to brave the dreaded Bird's Nest out of the gate. THANKS SO MUCH! Go catch a huge Tank on me! I put one in the water for ya (wink). Love ya keepin' it real!
