  • Learning a new piece can be overwhelming and, because of this, we often do things that are counterproductive and that cause us to take much longer than we should to learn a new piece. In this video, I talk about what steps I take when learning something new.

I especially liked the advice given towards the end of the video where Lauren states that learning a new piece of music is not an overnight gain. I won't forget that.

Great video! I have a tendency to want to plow through a piece, start to finish. Isolating sections and just focusing on that for a practice or two seems like a much more efficient way to digest the music. You gave me some excellent tips to help get the most out of my woodshedding, especially going over the piece and figuring out bowings ahead of time. Thanks Lauren!

Great lesson! Could you do a video on sight reading on the spot? For example, just reading a piece for the first time without being familiarized with it? And, how to apply proper bowing technique without having seen the piece at all? I'm intermediately proficient with sight reading, however I keep feeling like the bow is holding me down ( I'm more of a pizzicato/jazz upright player and feel more comfortable playing in that way, however I'm extremely motivated to keep improving my bowing technique!)
