I've thought about this for a while now and it finally clicked. My bass was laying on it's side E string up and I stood behind, German bowing it. The string and bow still meet at pretty much the same angle as when the bass is standing. I was massaging the string, pushing and pulling it around as a mini globe. Idk my down bow pulls it around and the up bow pushes back under or vice versa. Seemed to make sense and a marked improvement of smooth changes.
It seems that when you're moving away from the string the contact area is more to the left edge of the hair, and when you move into the string you are using the full hair section. Is this a common practice or a coincidence?
In this video, David is playing Thomastik Spirocore Weich as it's a borrowed double bass. On his personal instruments, he's using D'Addario Kaplan heavy for orchestra and Kaplan solos for solo playing.
