    We all learn from Lauren's videos. Sometimes I'm reminded of things from the nineteen fifties, and sometimes you present things that my teachers missed entirely. Thank you.

      Lauren Pierce and her sidekick Geoff Chalmers not show, are keeping it real 100, A truly apurrtenant point from Lauren regarding tuning applying drones, and timing. I'll probably never achieve the recognition, wealth fame, or applaue of the great russian bred Segei Koussevitsy, one of my adoring favorites, but I can continue on as a learner, watching videos such as these. There's also a great Ray Brown clip on UA-cam if any of those searchers out there desire to look for it, he emphasizes tuning, a captivating cip.

    Great video! Re: arpeggios, what I like to do sometimes is play 3 octave arpeggios by adding one step at a time, only moving on once the current set is in tune. By the time I'm done with a a full 3 octave arpeggio, I've practice the motion of playing one.. jeez, I don't even know how many times (lots!). The more times the arpeggio motion is gone through, the more in tune and fluid it gets, etc (I go slow, so it's not really about speed).

    Could you record a whole practice session from when you sit down to when you’re done, so we can see how it flows and so we can practice more effectively.

    Great! Thanks for all your advice! :)
    How about warming up physically before getting your hands on the bass? I find it almost impossible to start practising without warming up my body first.. I just feel so low on energy and strength and so "deactivated". I usually do some yoga excercises or a 5-10 min. vigorous walk, or even dance and hop around the room. It also helps a lot mentally. Do you do something like this?

    • @LaurenPierceBass
      @LaurenPierceBass  8 років тому +3

      +Alex Karagiorgis Hey Alex, great questions! I know some people stretch a bit before they practice, and I sometimes will if I'm a little tight, but I actually have found exercise to be the best thing to get me warmed up and ready to go. I workout every morning for about an hour - I do a mix between running, weight lifting, yoga, and other forms of cardio. You mentioned doing yoga, walking, or dancing, and I think that's great.
      Exercise is amazing for you mentally and physically. I always find that my mind is much clearer when I workout, and if you're doing endurance workouts (running, walking, etc) that really helps your long-term focus.

      I highly recommend picking up "The Bassist's Guide to Injury Management, Prevention, and Better Health" by Dr. Randall Kertz. On top of being highly illuminating, there are some fantastic pre-playing warm ups and stretches in there.

    Hey Lauren I just started bass this year I switched from violin and I wanted to know where the notes are on the bass like where to put my fingers and stuff

    • @LaurenPierceBass
      @LaurenPierceBass  9 років тому +3

      +karen jimenez Hi Karen, congratulations! You’re going to love the bass! :)
      Finding the notes on the bass is just like violin, so you have an advantage - it’s just a bigger version. My suggestion would be to use your ears. Start by playing an open string, pretend you’re starting the beginning of a scale, and put your first finger down on the second note of the scale. Let’s say you start on the D string - the next note will be E. The next note in the scale is F# - on bass, we use 1-4 for whole steps, so keep your 1st finger on E and put your 4th finger down on F# (put your 2nd and 3rd finger down with your 4th). Try this on every string and make sure you’re using your ears!
      Do you have a private teacher? Or anyone to help you? The bass is hard to learn - it’s much better and will help tremendously if you have a teacher to help you figure out what you should be doing.

    Lauren, what edition of the Handel Halverson passacaglia do you use? I have one for cello/violin/piano from IMSLP. That's likely a 'next lifetime' piece, but I'll be fun trying.

    • @LaurenPierceBass
      @LaurenPierceBass  7 років тому +1

      Hey David, I've never heard of the edition for cello/violin/piano! That sounds interesting. Kate and I read directly off of the violin and viola parts. I don't have an edition of it right now, but I'd like to make one in the near future. If I do, I'll advertise it on my Facebook page :)

    • @davidbteague
      @davidbteague 7 років тому

      Lauren Pierce , hey Lauren that edition is on imslp and it's a Russian Edition it's the first one that you find when you go to the Handel halvorsen passacaglia on imslp and go to arrangements and transcriptions. Tthat would be fun anyhow I found your passage in the cello part and I will be looking at that and thank you

    What is this "beeeeeeeep", a tuner for you have sure of your intonation?

    • @LaurenPierceBass
      @LaurenPierceBass  9 років тому

      Yes, that "beeeep" would be my tuner. It's not the most beautiful sound but it helps me play in tune, so I'm not complaining.

    Eine liebe, sympathische junge Dame. Quintessenz ihres Gequatsches sind Wald und Wiesenerkenntnisse.
    Wie man das Instrument von der Basis her richtig angreift und darauf aufbaut wird nicht vermittelt.

      Griff und Haltung sind in diesem Fall vorausgesetzt... dies ist eine reine Aufwärmübung und sie erzählt, wie sie persönlich das macht... und nimmt sich dafür die Zeit.
      Ich verstehe nicht, wo Ihr Problem liegt. Wenn Sie Griffe und Haltungen erlernen möchten, so gibt es wahrscheinlich mehr als genug Lehrvideos hier auf youtube...
