  • How to get up on foil is all about using the right technique when you are doing a water start. Whether you're riding a high volume board or medium volume board, these specific tips will help you spend less time in the water and more time flying on your foil. Learning to get up on foil can be a frustrating process and many riders still have trouble getting up in light wind because they arn't using the right technique. In this video, I hope to help my fellow foil brothers get up on foil more effectively using a knee start and a standing start.

    Yeah that back foot is the trick. From the rear toes it’s a no go. Side slide skate/surf style is cleaner.

      Yes, I agree. I'm just at the stage where all these pointers make sense now - seen other beginner's videos, but they omit some important critical points. (eg. scoop the wing actually reduces weight on the board..)

    Great point about pointing the board downwind some before heading back cross wind or upwind. Keeping the board even is also a great point. Not stalling the wing is also another good point.

    Great video, thanks a lot! Especially the advise about placing the backfoot more forward when pumping the board was an eyeopener to me. In fact I always did the opposite, moving the backfoot even more to the back of the board and tried like crazy to get the foil up...

      I’ve been doing the same thing too on my 120L Takuma. I was putting it near the line on the back of my mast.
      Hopefully I’ll try today to rectify it. I’ve been getting up of late but then panicking a bit after about 20 meters because I feel out of control.

    Great vid, thanks, I will try to use the tips next time, since I am struggling with getting up yet. Do you have any advice to where to position the foil? I have a big 6' Gong inflatable and rather bit front wing. Last time I moved it more to front and maybe it was a good idea, but still was not able to foil - I guess the wind was bit to light and I see now I did stall the foil trying to lift the nose of the board too much. Would moving the foil position work? How do you know if this is set up correctly?

    • @Movesmedia
      @Movesmedia  2 роки тому

      Moving your wing forward will definitely help you get up on foil. How big is you're front foil wing? The bigger it is the easier it will be to get up. If you're in light wind it still may be difficult and moving the wing forward also means you may stall out if you're too far back and not getting enough speed. Inflatable boards can be a bit more sticky on the water too. Working on your pump and scoop will help a lot. The biggest thing for anyone starting out and a guaranteed element to getting up with ease is to go out in higher wind conditions. Hope this helps! Even if you're not getting up you are building up your technique. Keep at it and you'll be flying soon! We all go through the learning curve.

    What if we stand up and start picking up a lot of speed crosswind? Do we still pump the wing and the board? This is where I am at and simply getting lots of speed doesn't bring the board up on to the foil until I hit a bump, and then fall. Is it always better to pump quickly before picking up too much speed crosswind?
    P.s. great video

    • @Movesmedia
      @Movesmedia  2 роки тому

      If you are getting lots of speed simply put weight on your back foot and you should start lifting off. Try moving the foil a bit forward for extra lift as well. If your not lifting off then that's where the pump can help. The pump is simple to get you up when you don't have enough speed. Hope that helps!

    I’m struggling to get up on foil. Great video. I made the mistake of starting on a smaller 90L board because I didn’t want to spend the money on two board when I figured I’d want a smaller board quite soon. Well now I’m not getting anywhere expect knees and the short standing up and then falling off before I ever get up on foil. Guess I’ll get it eventually if I learn the wing+leg pump but darn it’s frustrating. For me, being on open ocean (southwest Sweden) I mostly struggle with waves tipping my 90L board over whenever there is good wind. Any tips how to learn to stay upright balancing on you medium board waiting for that gust? Thanks anyhow :)

    • @Movesmedia
      @Movesmedia  2 роки тому +1

      Ya I feel your pain! I almost made that mistake when I started. It's definitely a grind. The first thing I'd suggest is getting a big board and selling off your 90L. Or stache your 90L and and sell off your big board when you're ready. If that's not an option make sure to go out when it's really blowing 20 Knots or more. That will get you moving faster and make your board more stable. Use those tips from the video to make sure your pumps are efficeient and you're getting up on foil quickley. In heavier wind days and with good pumping technique you should be able to get on foil after 2 or 3 pumps when you're standing. Hope that helps! You will get there, just gotta keep getting reps in on that smaller board.

    • @Movesmedia
      @Movesmedia  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks! Glad it helped. I use one foot strap on the front. Definitely helps with pumping but if you're a beginner it may be worth doing a few sessions without it as there is a bit more risk with getting your foot stuck. I think you'll be good either way at 15-20 knots. Have a great session!

    I am at the stage where taxiing on board is easy, I can get board speed and feel everything lighten underneath. My road block now is I can not stay on foil very long. Waves, sail lift in gusts, board control, I can not seem to get that relaxed stance.

    • @Movesmedia
      @Movesmedia  2 роки тому +1

      What is happening to you when you are on foil? Falling forward? Going to slow and stalling backwards? Just slowly coming back down onto your board but remaining standing? It sounds like you just need practice. Work on sailing your wing on the beach so it becomes more autmatic and something your brain isn't thinking about as much. Then you focus on your foot position and leaning, plus making sure you keep your speed up to stay on foil.

    • @johnschukei1708
      @johnschukei1708 2 роки тому

      @@Movesmedia thanks, I spin up wind on foil which I know is too much heel side, from taxiing a few seconds earlier. I fall forward mostly. I feel I lean too much, especially when another gust hits the sail, I tried sheeting out but still can not hold a steady body position on foil. It"s just school of hard knocks right now.

    • @Movesmedia
      @Movesmedia  2 роки тому +1

      @@johnschukei1708 Everyone goes through it! Keep at it and it will start coming together. Sounds like sheeting out earlier or really just letting any gust force you to sheet out so it doesn't pull you forward. Try just grabbing a bit of wind, sheeting out, a bit of wind, shetting out to get really good at compensating for strong gusts. I don't think any specific tip will completely fix your challenges but I guarantee you practice will. In 3 more sessions I'm confident you'll be much more confident. Good luck and let me know when you're flying comfortably!

    Good tips thanks. I’m getting up on foil pretty much all the time when there’s enough puff out there. Staying on foil is another matter I will ride 20 seconds or so but feel really like the board is taking me where it wants to go rather than me controlling it. Eventually big crash happens. Any tips on getting comfortable riding up on the foil ?

    • @Movesmedia
      @Movesmedia  2 роки тому

      Hey Steve, yes I know the feeling! Biggest tip is just more practice. After enough runs it just kind of clicks and you start to get the feel of it. What's your main issue? Going fast and getting too high on foil and doing a nose dive? That's a typical one. One thing that helped me was really trying to control my speed by edging up wind and letting out my sail wing enough so I could ride slow and consistently. This also helps build your control of going up wind.

    • @stevewebb8035
      @stevewebb8035 2 роки тому

      Yes that’s exactly it, I get faster and faster and then struggle not to breach and end up crash diving. More good tips, thanks so much. More time on the water planned today.

    • @mikeb1039

      let go with your back hand and let the wing float behind you when you get going too fast. Then practice turning while you have some speed but unpowered (wing floating). Bring the wing back on line as you make the turn. It feels squirrally as heck at first. practice time is what we all need. Taking an hour Efoil lesson lets you spend long sessions on the foil. Great way to feel/learn it. Bigger (slower) foil helps that all as well. JMO

  • @grlintheworld
    @grlintheworld Рік тому

    When you’re just learning how to get on foil, do you recommend sizing up your wing size for extra power? I feel that I need the power to get going, but then the second I get on foil I end up lit and out of control.
    Also, could you share the gear you used to record yourself on the water? Looks great!

    • @Movesmedia
      @Movesmedia  Рік тому +1

      Hmmm that's interesting. What's your weight and what is the wind speed when you're going out? If you're over powered when riding you should be able to get up on foil with a smaller wing. I personally don't find it a huge issue being over powered though. You can just sheet out your wing and use it much less efficiently to keep you going.
