Also I probably wouldn't buy used, crusty thermal paste off someone... forgot to mention that in this video sorry 😅

I bought a few old Sky boxes a couple of years ago (£10 a pop) and removed the 1TB drives out of them , not had one fail yet as i use them for backing up
I use a brand new Nvme as my O.S.drive and have 2 extra H.d.ds in my pc case for back ups and i have a LACIE d2 Quadra V2 sat next to my P.C.
overkill? yeah probably but not had a drive fail yet (fingers crossed) as i see it as importamt but not critical ,
You are spot on about the sellers and if you trust them , now im not a fan of facebook (havent been on there for 7-8 years) but the Market place seems a good place because at least you can see the item working
    A very good video

Thanks for the comment, and that's pretty cool to use the old drives from Sky boxes. I wouldn't have thought of that, but that sounds like a great source of reliable (and cheap!) HDDs. Your storage setup sounds good and it doesn't sound overkill to me lol - you can never have enough storage and redundancy IMO. :)

I think it's more or less always just been about risk. Some people are tolerant of a lot more risk, while others don't want to deal with troubleshooting or outright having damaging their expensive equipment, understandably so. I think I've always advocated for used parts whereever it seems fitting, since like you've said, the condition of the item itself is a significant factor. Maybe a lot of it is dependent on how much someone is willing to settle, as well. I personally wouldn't mind fixing bent pins on either a CPU or board to save some money, but I can understand why someone wouldn't want to go through the effort. There's always a bit of thrill with getting stuff to work at a distinctly cheap price, but it's probably best to keep in mind that it's also ultimately a gamble, even if the chances of it being in your favor might be higher than usual.

That's fair, I agree - especially that it just comes down to how much risk you're willing to take too. I haven't personally fixed bent CPU pins (*shudders* 😅) but I can totally get why you would have tried. I bet it feels good to get a bargain CPU that way, for example.

    I bought my current cpu/gpu used (12400/3070).
    I resold high end DDR4 that I had bought used (64GB 3600CL14).
    I sold my old ram/motherboard/cpu/gpu (7700K/1660Ti)
Once in while I buy a new big HDD and sell my oldest (smallest) HDD, I keep 3.
    This is a recurring patern.
I get good returns from my sales and I can't remember a problem with bought stuff.
Apart maybe from gpu fans rattling at high speeds. But I undervolt and tune the fan curves so the fans don't get above 1700rpm. And it might be due to the space being tight (?).
I remember complaints with 2 sold HDDs in the past. For one I proposed the buyer to ship it back to me and I paid half of the benefit back. For the other, the drive was still under warranty.
Also, in my experience, such stuff sells well.
I'd probably not buy a used psu because I'd want to get the latest ATX features and I only rarely buy a psu (mine is 9 years old).
I'd probably not buy a used motherboard because I'm pretty choosy, I like them fancy. Motherboards do get cheaper over time so I feel it's not worth it.
Also I live in switzerland, small country, worst case I could consider travelling to the buyer/seller.

That's all really interesting, and it sounds like you have a good system of buying then reselling later on. There's no reason not too IMO - I would struggle to send my old hardware to scrap unless it was really faulty. Glad that most of your used sales have been good experiences 🙂

Never bought a second hand part, probably never will. I would rather use lower end components than second hand ones, unless I can buy it from someone I'm close with. But that's pretty hard these days since I always buy the latest crap...

That's fair, I can definitely understand the sentiment. I'm similar to be honest - it's very rare that I purchase second hand electronics. I SELL a fair bit (when needed), but rarely buy. I think it often comes down to price... as most things do, I guess. Sometimes the used price is like 80% of the brand new price, so then I think of the extra benefits that new brings and often just go down that route.

@@TechOverwrite Yeah I think buying second hand makes more sense in the US, it appears they make better deals over there. Here in Portugal we have the so called "touch of Midas", so our second hand market ain't cheap.

Ah that's really interesting about the Portuguese "touch of Midas", just Googled it a bit. It's not quite that bad in the UK, but I know what you mean. It sounds like a better second hand market in the US for sure.
