Hi I'm Tristan, and I love computer gaming, hardware and software. I am a software developer 'by trade', but I am now a content creator. My aim is for Tech Overwrite to become the central source for all things related to PC gaming, hardware & software.
Culling RAM Until Gaming Is Impossible
Many people post screenshots of recent AAA games using up 10-20GB of RAM, before proudly saying that PC gamers need 64 GB of RAM for future proofing reasons. Is that really accurate though?
Well... no, it's not. Because that's not how RAM (memory) works. An operating system - and its applications like games and Chrome - will reserve as much RAM as it reasonably can.
So Hogwarts Legacy might use 15-16GB of memory when there's 64GB available, but then it will happily run on just 1GB of RAM in a lower-memory system too - as I show off in this video.
I test out 8 different games at 5 different RAM levels to show off the effects of RAM deprivation on PC gaming.
The RAM specs are:
64GB - 2x 32GB (Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO DDR4 3200MHz)
32GB - 1x 32GB (Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO DDR4 3200MHz)
16GB - 2x 8GB (Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3200MHz)
8GB - 1x 8GB (Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3200MHz)
4GB - 1x 4GB (XUM DDR4 2666MHz)
The games I played at each RAM level were:
Cyberpunk 2077
Guardians Of The Galaxy
Rocket League
Sniper Elite 5
Metro Exodus
Serious Sam: Siberian Mayhem
Hogwarts Legacy
Battlefield 2042
My workstation PC specs are:
CPU: Ryzen 5900X
Motherboard: Gigabyte B550 AORUS ELITE AX V2
GPU: Sapphire RX 6700XT 12GB VRAM

Wait, 16GB VRAM Isn't Enough Now? Which RTX 50 GPU To Buy?
Переглядів 3,4 тис.14 годин тому
This quick video explores my thoughts about the upcoming RTX 5090, RTX 5080 and RTX 5070 Ti - and especially those final two cards, because they 'only' have 16 GB of VRAM. While that IS quite a lot, and it's more than my current GPU has (I use the RX 6700XT which comes with 12GB of VRAM), I have been worried to see that the 16GB 4080 Super can't play the latest games at 4K. For example, the 408...
The Only Fans PC Build: 36 Fans, 0 Case

So... I had the 'amazing' idea of turning my second PC (a Homelab NAS with a Ryzen 7600 CPU) into a gaming PC, and for some reason I decided to build a case... out of case fans. I've actually had this idea for a while, but when I saw Corsair ML120 fans available for just £2.50 each in the recent sales, I bought a box load of fans (literally) and got to working making a PC build out of 36 case f...
Can Your PSU Cope With NVIDIA's RTX 50 Series?

Phew, so NVIDIA launched the new RTX 50 series of graphics cards at CES 2050 - including the RTX 5090, RTX 5080, RTX 5070 Ti and the RTX 5070. The other GPUs in the series (like the RTX 5060 and maybe RTX 5060 Ti) will come later on in the year. However these cards have a higher power requirements - with the RTX 5090 having a TDP of 575w, much higher than the 450w of the RTX 4090. So can you PS...
USB NVMe Gaming: The Good, The Bad & The Ugly

If you move between PCs a lot, or if your main PC has run out of disk space, you might be tempted to buy a USB M.2 NVMe drive and install all your games on there. But is storing all your games on an NVMe enclosure a genius plan - or a foolish one? So in this video I test out NVMe enclosure gaming in a range of games: Rocket League, Battlefield 2042, Guardians of the Galaxy, Metro Exodus, Sniper...
Dust-Proofing My Computers... Kind Of

After spotting quite a lot of dust inside my newly built Homelab NAS, I decided to overanalyze the situation a LOT - and then go out and buy a bunch of dust filters. So in this video I show off how I "dust proofed" my two computers (my workstation PC and my Homelab NAS). I also give some tips and tricks along the way because dust filters are NOT some magic solution that will prevent any PC clea...

The Only FPS Counters I Need (Goodbye, MSI Afterburner!)

There are LOTS of FPS trackers out there, but many people seem to go straight to MSI Afterburner. Which I kind of get because it IS a powerful FPS counter (& it also displays a bunch of other useful stats) - but I'm just not a massive fan of Afterburner, to be honest. As a result, I have tested out loads of different FPS counters - and I think that I have finally found my two favorite ones, whi...
Storing Games On A NAS: Genius Or Foolish?
Переглядів 1,2 тис.Місяць тому
After running out of disk space on my PC a bunch of times, I decided to try storing games on my NAS instead. Well, I actually have two NASes: a Synology NAS with mechanical hard drives, and a Homelab NAS with NVMe drives (and 10Gb networking). So I decided to install six games on each of them, and see how they performed. Would Cyberpunk 2077, Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, Metro Exodus, Rock...

How To Fix UGLY Graphics Card PCIe Cables
Переглядів 5932 місяці тому
The graphics cards are one of the most powerful - and complicated - bits of a PC build. That's because while plugging them into the motherboard PCIe slot is easy enough, cable managing the various PCIe cables (that run from your PSU to your GPU) is NOT easy. This is especially true if you have a pigtail (y-splitter) PCIe cable because there are multiple ends that hang around your case looking a...

"Upgrading" To 10 Gigabit Networking Is Challenging
NVIDIA fanboys: "It's plenty of VRAM" *"But, Indiana Jones runs out VRAM without even getting max settings with Path Tracing"* NVIDIA fanboy: *"you're using it wrong"*
Heh yeah that sums things up. It's frustrating - the third most powerful GPU (assuming the 5080 > 7900XTX) should be able to play Indiana Jones at all settings IMO.
This is the best video ive found on this man. Great explanations.
Glad you think so - thanks for watching 🙂
when you pay 1000+ dollars for something, you should not worry about vram. 5080 should have at least 18-20 gb but in a perfect world 24 gb. I bought one anyway but thats bcs i have 1070 right now with 8Gb and i cant afford 5090.
Yes I agree, it's frustrating all round. I'm 'lucky' that I ended up getting a 5080 at MSRP, but it's still expensive for 16GB VRAM. Still, it is proving to be an epic upgrade from my RX 6700XT. I hope yours work out well for you too 🙂
Great video and completely sorted out my 7900xtx stuttering problem.
Glad it helped! Happy gaming 😁
if you are on this video, you already need a managed switch, keep the main switch managed and smaller ones unmanaged
Hah that sums things up well! And I agree - that sounds like a sensible approach 🙂
Please help me here this is just confusing me now I have a 500w power supply with one 8 pin for gpu but same as you the gpu need a 8pin and 6pin the gpu needs 250w and recommend psu 500w dose not state a minimum can I use a adapter on the 8pin sorry if that don't make sense 🤣
It's definitely confusing. So if you only have a single 8 pin from your PSU, your options are: (1) try and find an adapter from a reputable company to get 2x 6/8 pins or (2) change your PSU. Unfortunately it might just be the case that your PSU isn't really equipped to power 250w GPUs - sorry. The minimum PSU requirement is more about giving general advice, but if your PSU does only offer a single PCIe cable/slot, it is difficult.
@TechOverwrite I see as I think I worked it out right by saying it well supply 225w with the 8pin and the pci slot would that not run right with a adapter on as only 2x8pin power supply's I can fine is 850w with the 2x 8pin pci thanks for the reply
Can i use pcie cable from Corsair to my psu seasonic M12II evo edition 750w?
Nope. I mean, maybe it'll physically fit (maybe) - but mixing PSU cables between brands is a big no-no sorry. Better to either change your PSU or look for the correct Seasonic cables, which I know is frustrating but I wouldn't use Corsair cables there .
Thanks For This Now I Dont Have To Worry Ab My Laptop Dying
After hours of reading the same nonsense others say, which it was all different, i found your channel, thank God. I am going to get 3 searate PCIE cables for my AMD Radeon™ RX 7900 XTX Taichi White 24GB OC. Then just run all 3 to separate ports on the PSU.
Thanks for watching 🙂 3x separate cables definitely makes sense to me, that's a great GPU.
I'm going with the corsair Rm1000x for a 9800x3d & a aorus master 5090 build think im ok? Maybe a little oc on the cpu in the future
That sounds like a good build, and I agree that the RM1000x should be okay - even with a mild OC. There should be enough power headroom IMO.
Very interesting comparison. I've always been under the impression that games run better with Dual-Channel memory (two sticks) than with a single stick. It looks like you've confirmed that. I'm now advising friends to get 16GB for everyday office use, 32GB for gaming, and 64 for video editing.
Thanks, yes it's definitely interesting - dual-channel all the way, agreed 🙂. Those RAM recommendations make sense too - definitely seems sensible.

Yes me too - I loved Fraps.

Haha no worries 🙈
How to you clip with a ps5 controller connected to your pc
12vhpwr - 5080 for example - they seem to come with adapters with 3x PCIe adapters. Does that mean we’re back on the pigtail question? Do you need a PSU with 3xPCIe sockets and use all of them, or is two ok?
Good question, you ideally should run 3x separate PCIe cables from the PSU yes (and so, have a PSU with 3x free ones) - agreed. I actually just received my 5080 FE yesterday, but I have a PSU that has a native 12vh-2x6 port. Actually I have two such PSUs (long story): the new Corsair RM1000e ATX 3.1 2025 model, and also a Montech Titanium Platinum ATX 3.1. Both of those have 12vh-2x6 ports, meaning that you can plug a single cable into the PSU, and then a single cable into the GPU (like the 5080). I know that means getting a new PSU, but I would prefer that to using a pigtail with a 5080. Just my own opinion though.
Thank you for explain it so clearly, I was always wondering how people connect a card with 24 pins from just 2 PCIe wires so I searched for it. I also learnt how to not bottleneck my power supply as a bonus. Thank a bunch!
You're welcome, thanks for watching & commenting :) Glad to have helped
noob shoud have got usbc 10gigbit dongle
Hey everyone, just a quick update. Thanks for everyone's thoughts on this video - it's definitely a frustrating GPU market all round :-( I ended up seeing the prices of the AIB RTX 5080s and giving up... but then a Founder's Edition model came in stock, which I bought. So it's still expensive for a 16GB VRAM card, but at least it's 30% cheaper than the AIB GPUs. See more here: ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx-945nu5l8EDMHS8F4zqWu2t0mdQCETUl
Hi, what if the extension cable is only 30cm long but your power supply is further away, I have a big case, do they plug into the spare cable s somewhere that came in the box....then into gpu?
Hi, yes that should be fine, but just make sure that they're good quality extension cables (i.e. from a reputable make).
@@TechOverwrite hey I wasn't sure you'd reply so ty very much, yes they're Shakmod extensions and I'll be attaching them to the og Corsair cable spares from the box, only thing is 1 is a "devil spawn" lol, obvs i would be bypassing the sticky out bit lol. Thanks so much for your help and the vids.
HPET was really making my CPU work very hard - Disabling it was a huge improvement - dropped usage by 70% on average ( AMD Ryzen 9 7900 ). Thanks!
Interesting, glad that helped :)
Have 48, am an odd duck, Hogwarts is why I went over 32.
Ah that's interesting, is that 3x 16GB sticks? I can see why you upgraded though - while Hogwarts was _technically_ playable here, it probably wouldn't be for longer stretches of time (or with a more powerful GPU).
@@TechOverwrite 24 x 2 DDR5 6400 CL36 kit though I've still been eyeing 64gb CL28/30 kits I don't need with tariffs on the way I've been stocking on anything from fans, budget EATX cases and odds/ends rgb/fan hubs, gpu holders etc. My first kit for DDR5 was 32gb though and was on 32gb since 2019 DDR4 CL16. Depending on the game and OS feel like 16gb min is probably still fine for most situations though it gets more smooth multitasking 32 & 48gb, more of a feeling. A lot of the extra ram seems to be cached, multitasking and gaming had 12gb free yesterday. Some games are more ram hogs than others too. I've also experienced where a game has a ram leak and that's unpleasant.
@osinstalls that definitely makes sense (and very prescient point about tarrifs - ugh!). Yep it's interesting how the OS manages extra RAM - never a bad thing to have extra so that it can be cached and used when needed.
Then there's oddballs like me with 128 GB (4x 32 GB) of RAM lol
Haha, that's awesome. Nothing wrong with that lol 😯 My 64GB build had often seemed overkill, but every so often I go above 32-40GB usage and then I'm relieved to have 64 gig.
W video yet again
Thank you, I appreciate that 🙂
I'm no techie, so this is an uneducated statement, but where is AMD (or any other nvidia competitors) and why aren't they looking at all the complaints about the 5080 etc and saying, lets make a better card at a cheaper price and it will sell truckloads, let's look at all the complaints people have about the 5080 and build a card that no one can complain about. Talk with gamers, videos editors etc and see what they're looking for and build prototypes and then if there's glitches, fix them , do more R&D and build a new prototype, until everyone is happy and the launch price point will not be greedy but acceptable for the power/performance the card has. Right now its like Nvidia can do what they want and people will still buy it.
Fair comment and it's a frustrating GPU market all round. AMD did used to have some good high end competition, but in recent years they seem to have moved more towards the mid range of cards. The upcoming 9070XT is rumoured to be good, but AMD ended up delaying it when they seen NVIDIA release the 50 series - which is concerning. Is it simply too hard nowadays to produce a high end GPU (for example)? I think the reality is that we're approaching a situation where making the GPU hardware better each year is almost impossible, so things are shifting to the software side (frame gen, ray tracing etc). And for a variety of reasons, NVIDIA are way ahead on the software side. I definitely hope that AMD and Intel's new cards start to beat out NVIDIA at the low and mid ranges, and then they can work up from there. We need more competition for sure.
@@TechOverwrite Bro thanks for reply, appreciated.
Well that was interesting and enlightening. Thank you.
Glad you liked it, thanks for watching and commenting :)
used 1200w ATX3.0 :)
That's a good choice, 1000w starts looking a little low when looking at the power draw of the 5090 lol.
bro i play 6 hrs daily since im a student on geofrce now. seems like i cant anymore😭
Ugh sorry to hear that. Yep, you'll definitely hit the cap - by the middle of the month unfortunately. It's a frustrating change.
I’m fairly certain in most circumstances , the 12 to 2x8 pin connectors are fine. I have a 7900XTX and was very concerned about this. Have the pig tailed 8pins (again, 12 2x8 is fine, but if it’s 8 to 2x8 probably not) . Ran benchmarks for hours , overclocked to monitor strain , legit 0 power issues. This is 80% true, but just something know if the PSU connector is beefier than the standard 8 to 6+2 setup
That's a good point, thanks for the clarification. That's an awesome GPU too - happy gaming :)
how to make a 12 min. video for topic/talk which needs 30 sec. :
Thanks for the comment. It's a hard balancing act - some people are happy to use adapters and an ATX 2.0 PSU, others (like me) prefer ATX 3.1 and native 12vh-2x6 port on the PSU. It comes down to personal risk, but that's not something that can be discussion in 30 seconds IMO.
Whenever i try to remove my pci cable for gpu it just doesnt want to temovd for rtx 4080 its fcking insane. I dont know what to do.
Uh oh, sorry to hear it. That's frustrating. Maybe try gently wiggling it back and forth - it does sound odd though.
Have you thought about making a discord? Think it would be good to have a place for people to discuss
Thanks for the suggestion, I'm on a couple of Discords of other creators (such as the TechLabUK one, and Scan's own one) but maybe a Tech Overwrite Discord could work too. Will give that a think - thank you :)
I think an interesting video would be compare and contrast different USB drives in the same enclosure or using USB SSD vs USB Nvme just an idea. I have actually used a lot of USB drives and don't find the Nvme enclosures to be much if at all faster than SSD over USB. I also find the Samsung drives or faster drives in general will perform better over USB even though they can't reach their limits. The loss in performance is quite frustrating but I need to use USB since I use RPI4, RPI5 and a mini PC with limited storage. I also found the quality of the enclosures matter. I have had very different results with the same drives and better enclosures. I also have the opposite occur. I finally broke down and bought an Nvme HAT for the RP5 and it made a world of difference.
That's an interesting idea, thank you. Yes that could be interesting for sure - I agree that it seems like some types of drive are a LOT better than others.
Currently I am using a GTX 1060 6GB and I wanted to buy a 4070 Ti Super last year but I thought I'd just wait for the new 5000 series to drop and see whats better. I game in 1440p and I am looking for a 16GB card but I am kinda scared for the prices of the new 5070 Ti in my country because the 4070 Ti Super went up in price here from 800€ to 1000€ which feels like a rip off. So yeah I am not really optimistic at the moment...
if you can stomach fsr 3.1 then amd might be better. nvidia is so overpriced that sometimes you can buy a higher tier amd card and just power through native resolution.
It's hard to know all round. The 5070 Ti sounds promising, but the 5090 and 5080 launch was so 'bumpy' that I'm not convinced the 5070 Ti will have great stock levels. Hopefully it does though.
Thank you great sir!
You are welcome! :)
GeForce Now Ultimate is your savior. 4080 24gb that you can use on any device. There's no better value out there.
I like GeForce Now - I reviewed it last year and I was surprised at how good it was actually.
Missing out this gen, keeping my 3080ti, I'll drop to 1440p or even 1080p if needed as (for me) the prices of the 50 series are so unreasonable.
That makes sense, it would be different if the 50 series delivered 20%+ generational gains but... nope.
What the poit to get into 4K gaming? Looking at Steam's info about users that have 4K monitors it's the LOWEST amount of all, for comparison 1080p it's around 55% and 20% for 2K. And 4!!!! % of 4K users. It seems that Nvidia saw the reviews about 4K this and that and fall for it, but in reality is right opposite. Besides, the cost of good 4K gaming monitor's is stil very high. If we look at performance of same graphic card's in 4K and 2K, it shows the BIG difference, not sure if you planing or now having 4K monitor, but take this to note. And, last but not least, running games at ULTRA settings in 2K is not using that many VRAM, soo... Im uprading my 3060 ti (with only 8Gb) to 5070 Ti, just because it better than mine and 4070 super(and seem's to be on one level with 4080 super), and hoping that you change youre mind about actual problem with VRAM amount.
Good point, thanks for watching and commenting. I agree - I think that 2K is the sweet spot right now. I only have a 4K monitor for video editing, but I'm debating buying a 1440p 240hz monitor for gaming. Not sure yet.
After Nvidia benchmarks and AMD leaks I have ordered RX 7900 XTX. 24GB FTW. As you show at 1:29 Ultra Settings are bullshit, so I don't care a lot about the benchmarks.
Nice, that's an epic GPU. I was debating about that card, that will serve you well for a long time :)
As long time Nvidia user… I’m really thinking on going amd later this year just because of the vram.. I’m not paying $1500+ for a video card.
That's fair, the upcoming 9070XT could be promising. And naturally the 7900XTX has great render performance.
Why would any sane gamer pay £1200 for a card that releases tomorrow, when it can't run already released titles at the resolution they want without dialling down settings? Nvidia will only listen if people don't pander to their nonsense. Leave the cards on the shelves.
Yep I get that. It's frustrating, and actually I had my eye on a nice looking white 5080 AIB but it was £1300 - crazy money for a 16gb card IMO.
Great video! Eased my anxiety of upgrading my gear! Cheers!
Thanks for watching, glad to have helped :)
16GB of vram on 1000€ gpu in 2025? It may have strong raster performance but when someone really wants to play full RT + PT (for example CP77).. 16GB is just not enough. RX6800 had 16GB 4 years ago for 579 msrp. This is just ngreedia.. they are selling it because they know sheeps will buy it again.
That's fair, thanks for watching and commenting. It's frustrating from Ngreedia lol.
Pretty sure 16gb is more than enough for path traced cyberpunk. If I remember correctly it's about 13gb usage with 15 gb allocated when playing at 4k dlss quality with RT overdrive and RR. At native 4k I suppose maybe 16gb could potentially be a problem but there are no 16gb cards that could even produce playable framerates at 4k native with rt overdrive.
i have Thermaltake PF1 ARGB 1200w 80 plus platinum ATX 2.4 i am using already corsair 12pin to 2x(2+6) conector for my 4080. Can lift the 5090 rog astral oc?
Ooo interesting question, yes considering it's a platinum and 1200w PSU, I'm sure it'll handle the 5090 too. I haven't seen much power consumption tests of the ROG ASTRAL OC (which is likely to use a fair bit of power) but again, 1200w should cover it yes :)
I run a 3050 lp 6gb , I get so much trash for it but it can literally run everything I throw at it at 1080p max settings. I don’t understand why it’s a “bad” card. And before someone jumps in a calls me retarted I had to go with a card that didn’t have a power connector and that was my best option at the time.
If it works for you that's all that matters regardless of what anyone thinks
You're definitely not 'bad' for owning a 3050, I remember seeing the reviews when it released and it's a good overall card. Nothing wrong with 1080p gaming either - it's much cheaper too LOL!
1080p is for Men.
Great video! Me personally & probably I'm gonna buy sooner the 5070Ti since I've been waiting this upgrade from 20 series I already Have a GTx 1060 & Rtx 2060 35% difference which's great back then I m still playing game on 1440p & 1080p with 6gb Vram so 5070Ti would be 1000% difference & great upgrade I'd luv to have an Rtx 5090 but way to expensive 3k for 30% performance compared to 5070ti however 16gb Vram is way too little, should be at least 20gb..
Thanks :) And that sounds like a good plan, the 5070 Ti should be a massive upgrade for you I agree.
