    NOTE: Instead of going to DIAL 1&2 to set up the settings, Go to the M dial and then follow all the set up video settings. After you set the 24fps settings for the M dial Go to tab 1 page 3/14 and down to Memory now select M1 which will assign to Dial 1. Then adjust the settings for 120fps on the M dial and go back the menu, tab 1 page 3/14 and go to memory and select M2, apologie for the confusion. Also to unlock your Movie dial to put it in full manual make sure your dial is on the movie mode, go into the menu tab 2 page 1/9 and for Exposure mode select Manual Exposure!

      Jim Penn hey Jim I apologize for the confusion but you are correct you set your settings on the M dial, then when you save them you select which memory dial you’d like to be set up for. Unfortunately the only way to revert the settings back on manual is to manually adjust them again. I know it’s annoying but once you do this you’ll never have to do it again unless you decide you want to change your dials in the future!

    The Picture profile does not change internally mate. Your memory will just apply the PP 10 but will not change the internal stuff. Basically, you have to make 2 near identical PPs with one having the change in detail to 0 and then memory the second one for the slow-mo 120 FPS setting. I could be wrong but that's whats happening on my cams. A7R3/2 6500 etc. Forgot to say great video and really useful.

    Hey Jason, super helpful vid. Just setting up my A73. With assigning the custom buttons I noticed you did that in the photo custom button menu and not the movie custom menu. Are your custom buttons assigned the same whether you are shooting video or stills? When in shooting in top Dial 1 or 2 are the custom buttons always what has been set in the photo custom button menu? In other words does the movie custom button assign menu only take effect when in movie mode on the top dial? Do you even use that movie mode, is it useful?

    Back with another question after setting up my 1 and 2 buttons. I love how fast and easy this makes it to switch between filming at 24fps and 120 fps. The issue I am having is that when on either 1 or 2, I can't seem to get my shutter button to work as the record button. The shutter button works as the record button when I am in movie mode but not once I turn the dial to 1 or 2. Is that something I just missed in the setup? Thanks!

    First of, thank you very Jason for this tutorial! I just wanna clear something up here. When you say set it on manual, did you mean "M" or "the video logo" on top mode dial? I think if you adjust all your settings while on "M" and save it in the memory, it will save them, but it won't be for video since "M" mode is for manual photo shooting. I think you have to adjust everything while you're on "the video logo" mode. Lol, i hope I didn't get anyone confuse.

    Quick question. When shooting video after you have all your settings dialed in, do you just use the exposure compensation dial to adjust for your exposure?

    • @ImJasonAnthony
      @ImJasonAnthony  6 років тому +2

      I don't to be honest. I'm always using a variable ND filter this way I can shoot wide open so if I do need to adjust exposure the first thing I'm doing is letting more light in through the filter dial. If I then need more light I'll adjust the ISO being that the performance is so amazing on these cameras! Hope this helped Chad

  • @pamkorman
    @pamkorman 6 років тому +1

    Jason, fantastic video! Thanks so much. I have two questions. I am a photographer just moving to video so my thought was to shoot video in raw. I understand if you do that you lose the clear image zoom but how does shooting in jpeg affect your ability to "fix" or grade the video later. And, another totally newbie question, if you need to change the exposure settings you set up for both 4K and HD because the light is too low or too bright, what do you change first? ISO, f/stop or SS? Thanks so much for the help!!

    • @ImJasonAnthony
      @ImJasonAnthony  6 років тому +1

      Pam Korman Thank you so much Pam. Now Raw and JPEG are formats for photos only. Sony cameras have picture profiles for video which are similar to the raw or jpeg format for photos. The only reason why we’re putting jpeg on is so the camera allows us to use the clear image zoom feature. For some reason it does not let us use it when raw is selected. Now if you’re looking for a picture profile you can add color, luts, and cinematic styling I suggest cine4 or slog2. Those would be in the picture profile setting. I have a video on how to expose and grade slog2 footage. To brighten up an image via video you never want to touch shutter. There’s a rule known as the 180* rule for shutter speed on video. Whatever fps you’re shooting your shutter should be double that amount for proper “Hollywood” or cinematic motion blur or else footage will not look natural to the eye. If you’re shooting 24fps your shutter should stay at 1/50. 120fps shutter at 1/250. To brighten up I will think about what fps I’m at first if I’m shooting slowmotion at 120fps but I don’t need slow motion I’ll go to 24fps which will allow me to properly have a slower shutter. If I need to be at the higher fps, I’ll always adjust my fstop first then iso. Hope this helped!

    • @pamkorman
      @pamkorman 6 років тому +1

      Jason, thanks so much for walking me through all of that. Your explanations of both the raw/jpeg and 180 rule were super helpful. I am off to watch your slog2 video. I have been leaning towards the Cine4 PP because it is easier to expose for and I shoot outside a lot but I am curious to hear what you have to say about slog2. Thank you again for all the help. I truly appreciate it.

    • @ImJasonAnthony
      @ImJasonAnthony  6 років тому +1

      Pam Korman Cine4 is great and rather flat and grading can definitely be easy. I love slog2 lately just because I can get awesome exposure of shadows and highlights. I did a whole project on cine4 and noticed that some of my highlights would clip earlier than shooting slog2. Cine4 to me is a bit too contrasty on the shadows and I’m sure it can be adjusted in camera I just haven’t really had the time to sit down and play with it as much. I think once you understand how to over expose slog2 and grade it you’ll enjoy it a ton! Play with both and go with whichever one you enjoy using!

    • @ImJasonAnthony
      @ImJasonAnthony  6 років тому

      Cavjoxx bro this is a huge debate. From a professional photographer and cinematographer I would tell you if money isn’t an issue but the a7iii and put the rest of the money towards a ziess or gmaster lens. I wish I could do it over and buy 2 a7iii’s instead of having one of each. My go to is the a7iii I’ve made prints as big as 16x20 and the resolution for 24mpeg is outstanding. The better iso performance and focus points makes it a no brainer bro.

    • @ImJasonAnthony

When I shoot inside at 1/250 (with F3.5, lowest with the kit lens) things get pretty dark. How do I intercept this? Just by cranking up the ISO or is there a better way to do it? Hey brother so when I go to a shoot and I realize the lighting is too low, if I do not have more lighting on me whether I didn't bring mine or it's somewhere not pratical the only things I could suggest are A) change your FPS. It sucks but sometimes you have to go from 120fps to 60fps or even slower B) save for a lens with a faster fstop like an f1.8-f2-8 C) bump up your ISO however this will introduce noise in your film so be aware. I try to avoid raising my ISO higher than the picture profiles native ISO, it's usually a last resort.

    1. The display looks like its set up as a 'still camera'...with number of pics, 3:2 @42mp, etc...your demo has it looking like the video mode I'm used to-- 2. All the settings seem to be automatic, vs manual, as the shutter shifts depending on the light. I feel like I'm in the wrong mode. Thoughts? Thanks dude!

      Craig Ciali hey bro my bad this video is hella old and there’s an update pinned. So before setting the dials you have to go onto the video dial then into the video menu. Tab 2 the first option that says exposure mode change that to M it most likely is in P. Once you do that jump onto the M dial and follow the video. This should get everything straightened up and have it all see correctly from there moving forward. Apologize for the confusion. Hey Steve unlike Canon, Sony will not record Slow motion in body. It records in slow motion but you have to in post change the frame rate of the footage from 120 and modify it to fit your 24fps or 30 fps sequence. I can do my best in the next 2 days to make a quick tutorial on how to do it in premiere. If you use the S&Q setting on your dial it will do slow motion in body however the quality is not as sharp as you would get doing it post editing because the megabits per second aren't as high. If it sounds like I'm speaking a different language don't worry. What program do you plan to edit video in so I can do my best to make a quick tutorial to help you out and get buttery smooth slowmo?

    Hey Jason, I realized you haven't posted in about a year so I'm not sure if you are active on here or not but I'd love to know just a couple things if you have a moment. I'm a real estate photographer and have recently gone independent - praise the camera gods. My question is, since your last PP/HLG3 video, are your general camera settings in this video still the same (PP aside)? I pretty much converted your settings over but with HLG3 and personal tweaks aside. Lastly, I've seen some videos out there saying 60 FPS is enough to do "slo-mo" and speed ramping, but I haven't had enough time to test this; do you still feel 120 fps @240 is necessary? The reason I ask is in a low light situation, it seems you may be able to get that shutter speed lowered to 120, while still maintaining some professional-looking slow-mo @ 60 fps. Cheers!!
    EDIT: I realize this is half the data rate @50m as opposed to the 100m you get with 120fps. With that said, it's probably not even worth it. One thing I will note is it is wonderful using HLG3 so far, as I can bump the ISO over 1k etc. without tons of noise dropping in like with SLOG. Have you found an ISO limit with HLG3 that you refuse to go past?

      Dude I don't even know how thats even possible? The whole point for using JPEG while settings up for videos is so you can use the Clear Image Zoom feature is to be able to zoom in for 4k video. These settings are for video only. If you're taking pictures on your dial 1 or 2 you set up for video thats wrong. What you need to do after you set up the dials is go back to the M dial and put the photo settings back on so go back to raw if you shoot raw and change any other settings for photos back on the M dial. This will allow you to always have the M dial for photos while having Dial 1 & 2 for video.

    I just got a Sony a73 and I used your video to set up my video settings. I really appreciate it. I took it out today to do some test footage and everything was really over exposed. I am new to video and was just curious do I need to use ND filters to bring my exposure down Because I am trying to keep my frame rate at a certain level like you suggested…

      Hey brother I'm glad I could help out! Yes a good variable ND filter will allow you to shoot wide open at say f1.8 or any real fstop and help cut light to have proper motion blur by using the proper shutter speed to framrates known as the 180* rule.
