I just moved to Denver, and I think it's worth a "survey" of recently completed projects. Frankly, I'm really impressed with the bevy of new buildings that have changed the city's look over the last 15 years -- an art museum, a courthouse, a performing arts complex, new sports stadiums and some gorgeous mid-rise business towers. No other American city, in my opinion, has grown so fast with so much good architectural taste. Denver's decisions seem to actually care about the eyes of the people who must face the built environment every day.
That was President Trump's (then citizen Trump's) first building project - - it TRANSFORMED the area (which had turned into a seedy dumpy run-down neighborhood.) They want to take it down BECAUSE Trump built it (immature + petty cry-baby politics)
It is already hidden among taller buildings. It can't keep low density at a transit hub for landmark reasons. A shorter building or renovation is not economical. The existing building is obsolete.
This building is going to completely destroy the majesty of the Chrysler building, to the point of placing it in peril of replacement just like the Commodore. Probably in as little as 20 years.
With work from home and hybrid models having caused a huge office vacancy rate in all major cities, one wonders if there is such a need for this colossal structure. But it's the massive disrespect towards the Chrysler Building across the street which appalls me. It's as if they want to hide the most beloved skyscraper in New York. You won't be able to view the Chrysler Building anymore from any direction except the East, and even then it will have the massive Commodore building right behind it serving as a backdrop. Did you notice how many times the Chrysler Building was shown in this video, proudly towering over Grand Central and the Hyatt? Well say goodbye to those views forever. I really hope this thing never gets built, or at least not at this location.
For years the most beloved skyscraper in NYC was the Singer Building. At least the Chrysler Building isn't being demolished. If you want frozen in time stick to Colonial Williamsburg.
@@LJB103 I guess we should never have created the New York Landmarks Preservation Commission then? Grand Central Terminal and Radio City Music Hall were both on the chopping block but saved by it. Were we just wanting to be frozen in time?
@@LJB103 Or what you do is jack the Chrysler building up 751 feet and build new floor space between the existing lobby and upper portion which would be cut apart. Basically the same thing that was done to the Palace Theater just on a much grander scale. Then, you lower it onto the newly-built floor space and you have a building that goes up 1,797 feet to project commodore's 1,581. The Chrysler gets to retain its position on the skyline but for a new era.
They should’ve made this tower at least 2,000 feet high. And a bit more decorative, out of all the new tallest buildings of NYC this one is my favorite design.
the building’s beautiful no doubt, but its scale is absolutely unreasonable. the same with the new foster&partners skyscraper. why can’t we show some respect for the surrounding patrimonial architecture?? why does the chrysler building have to be so overshadowed by these new buildings?? i believe that “showing respect” to past architecture should go way beyond some slight design aspects. these new monstrous towers just don’t fit in the urban envoirement they’re going to be placed in
This tower is HUGE and feels out of place at this specific location. However, I do love the design. Overall good video but my only point of contention is the clip of the Chicago L at 5:38 passing off as MTA.
I saw the "L," too. Immediately. And I'm no NY-er...but I knew that wasn't right. Hard to imagine any video producer (or "content creator") being that sloppy and, further, presuming the audience won't know.
It is a huge tower at a time when people do not want to come in to work at the office, NYC is filled with crime, filthy rundown subway system, grimy dirty streets, litter everywhere, thugery, homelessness and drugs everywhere in pure daylight, less police to protect, and counteract crime, homicides, vandalism, etc, etc. NYC has lost its style, glam, opulence, it is nothing but a dysfunctional city that is mediocre infrastructure, police, rescue, emergency agencies, are reduced like never before. Why go ahead with this costly tiresome played out project. What is in it for the law abiding citizens that are poorer and run down, ignored, that are just trying to survive the violent, ugly jungle that NYC has become now in 2024 the 21st century.
A brief look at the situation, I see office vacancy rates in that area around one in five to one in four, so this is a situation normally new space would be difficult to support.
Visually, the tower's architecture is convincing, but its footprint is too BIG! It trivializes both Grand Central and the Chrysler building. If it just reduced its entire scale by 10 percent or even less, 8 percent, the neighboring structures could retain some dignity in their volume. This video is well-informed and narrated, but too laudatory. I love the addition of more architecture didcussions on YT, but I hope the channel aims for objective dialog, over a promotional tone.
The renderings are gorgeous. I prefer the new build to the hotel. The hotel was nothing special to look at. The new building really makes a statement. I lived in NYC for 24 years. It's an amazing place. No matter what the economy is like, the construction never seems to slow down. For people that live there, it's just a part of life.
Very American and simplistic vision of the audio commentary. The building itself is a success from the outside, its design is sober, elegant and is meant to recall the New York architecture of the last century. The real negative point is its immediate proximity to the Chrysler building. This building will definitely break the view and the atmosphere of the neighborhood I think of this iconic view at the bottom of Grand Central, with the Chrysler building. A view that visitors and tourists love! And there are still more than 60 million of them per year in the city… So it’s a shame.
This is my favorite area of New York City, and I know it extremely well. The Chrysler Building is my favorite building ever. I actually don't like this new building because of the way it looms over the Chrysler Building. But I do love the street-level/Viaduct-level aspect of the place. That is truly epic. The Hyatt Hotel has been a has-been property for 30 years now, so it is no big loss. But yeah... I do wish this new building was half the height that it is, as the Chrysler Building will all but disappear from the skyline with that monster building next to it. So thumbs down in general for this building, but at least New York is starting to get that in on that Tokyo style of making the street level and mezzanine of new buildings into walkable and accessible parkland.
Great observations. I've always considered the Chrysler Building to be NYC's most beautiful skyscraper. However, it's already been dwarfed in the neighborhood by new construction. As a native NYer, the constantly changing skyline is exciting and a further testament to the City's uniqueness.
This new skyscraper by SOM is a step in the right direction. The structural latice pays homage to the late Zaha Hadid, adding architectural interest to the skyline. I would love to see more buildings push the future envelope.
One of the most beautiful skyscrapers. Let's not forget Mies van der Rohe's buildings in NY and Chicago, the Sears Tower, John Hancock Center and the Chrysler Building. Just to name a few. But again, this is looking amazing.
The Hyatt replacement is much closer to the iconic Chrysler Building than the computer rendering eluded to. It’s going to be totally dominated by this new edition.
