The Trader Joes that you showed is their bestManhattan location, most of their other location within NYC are cramped, and over crowded. Citarella is a good choice for fresh seafood, and Eli's has always been crazy expensive. Our favorite upper end market is Agata and Valentina on 1st Avenue on the Upper East side. Their prepared foods are second to none, and they have an excellent produce section.

SPROUT'S Market in NJ sells them for approx $10 dozen. Tried them once and they didn't poach nicely. If you're supposed to have a soy free diet, most commercials chickens are fed soy so there is a practical reason for certain consumers. The yolks were very pale yellow and the albumin was overly fluffy. Overall tasteless and the shells were so thin it didn't feel right.
Give me Trader Joe’s over any of those. I spied the gingerbread man cookies behind you in the video. Those are amazing! Way better than that sad ham sandwich. 😂
One of the things I miss most about not living in NYC/moving to the Midwest...is Trader Joe's. I used to live a block from TJ's in Manhattan, and where I live now doesn't have a single TJ in the entire state. The prices at TJs are so cheap/affordable.
@@calvincoolidge1207Both stores are Aldi, but not the SAME Aldi. Our USA Aldi is Aldi Sud. Trader Joe's has been owned by Aldi Nord for over 40 years.
Trader Joe's is so weird because it's essentially just the perfect quintessential middle class grocery store, but they basically only set up shop in elitist areas 🤦♂️As for the comparison with Aldi, owned by TJ's parent company's sister, it has a vastly different theme, more of a drab everyday middle of europe vibe. It genuinely looks like what it is: an americanized version of a common german grocery. They're also a solid middle class grocery store, a bit more affordable on average but a less appealing product array, i'd call TJ's 15% nicer. They are, however, found in many more middle and working class neighborhoods.
@mind-of-neo You're not wrong. In New Orleans, Aldi is in a solidly working class neighborhood. Trader Joe's is on the same road, but well into a nicer area. And the new Trader Joe's is being built in uptown, on Freret Street -- definitely an inexpensive area.
same. you couldnt pay me enough billions to move back to manhattan. zero community. terrible quality of life. ripoff prices. high crime. mega ultra high taxes. what's not to love?
Aldi is a hit and miss kinda place to shop. Sometimes i can find a few good things there, but there's not enough high quality items or enough variety to do an entire single grocery haul there.
Yeah TJ's is probably the cheapest or one of the cheapest grocery stores here in the US. Aldi's is very cheap but yuck, I compared to TJ's Aldi ranks one of the bottom for me but TJs is very popular.
Really good video Jon. A bit different for you but it's not something you have done a lot of and food shopping is something we do on a regular basis and was good to see some of the expensive places in New York. Although we all know New York and food can be so expensive. I found this very interesting. Some of those prices were a joke but the $32 Ham and Cheese Sandwich was a disgrace. Seriously it was thin and not even that big. I don't know how they can justify charging this. Some of the other items were very overpriced to. I don't like how some of these influencers highlight certain food. I live in England and we have some great supermarkets but I always like going around ones in New York and other places but I love Trader Joe's and Whole Foods. I think they offer quality produce which although not always cheap are much better value than the ones you showed us. Really good work as usual. Love the variety of videos.
Great video! I will dare say NYC has become like many other cities a destination and therefor so much hype has been built among many stores. I also imagine through Social Media the hype is created and many people/tourist follow blindingly.
Gruyere is delicious but it's a cheese you'd generally eat melted such as in toasted sandwich, it's great on a baked potato. (In Europe and the UK you can get proper designated origin product Gruyere in discount supermarkets such as Lidl. It's little bit more expensive than normal cheese but nothing remotely like the price it was in this video)
Got our Thanksgiving dinner from Butterfield and it was actually a pretty good deal! Fed 6 of us and we still had plenty of leftovers for just under $300
I love Citerella - been going there for years. Its best to go to shop for there for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner items. I just go there 3 times a year for gourmet items - the cooked and prepared food and meat fish counter are the best.
I used to shop at both Citarella and Eli's. It's about making choices. You don't have to buy the $20 rooftop-grown tomatoes at Eli's. They have other great things. Citarella makes great tea cakes :D
@@calvincoolidge1207 Depends on the eggs. I’ve had Nellie’s eggs that were as good as fresh from the neighbor’s hen house. Really good eggs are different in flavor, color and texture.
New Yorker here. I've never been a fan of Citarella. Their days are well behind them, IMO. I like the Eli Zabar in Grand Central Station. They always have cookies that are nice enough to give as gifts. My favorite by far is the Butterfield market. Best prepared foods...ham & cheese quiche, pasta dishes, chicken, etc. In the summer, they have an ice cream window for local school kids who want their afternoon treat! If you want more super expensive...come downtown to the Tin Building! $$$$ BTW, I pay $7.99 for dozen eggs (organic pasture raised) at Whole Foods on Wall St.
Ahhh the new Whole Foods on Wall Street near Lifetime gym. I know it well, but the salad bar is so overpriced and during lunch the local tour guides literally dump crowds of up to 50 people there, not good. Tin building is excellent and no one is ever there- it’s as good as Eataly with less crowds and more restaurants. But if you are in fidi, I would just check out Delmonicos (world famous), crown shy, manhatta (rooftop), nobu (the orginal one that used to be in tribeca ) and dead rabbit (won best bar in the world). Google each of these and you will have better options than Whole Foods.
you have to be unhinged to do all your shopping at these stores for staple items. Only go there for rare olive oils or imported fruits or fancy caviars
Reminds me of my very rare (non dairy) ice cream splurges. Either Ben and Jerrys in a pint or 2 scoops with a couple of toppings from a local ice cream shop is less than half that much and i consider that paying too much for it. Lol.
Thanks for the info on some of the high end expensive markets. Gristedes and D’Agostinos prices on many items are expensive, especially for a what is not a high end market. I love Trader Joe’s for quality and price. Whole Foods is expensive for some items, but their sale items and store brand , 365, is reasonable.
Love to see you hunt for the iconic New York egg cream see if any classic soda fountains still out there . I make my own bot living in NYC these days. Use half a cup of milk. Three table spoons u bet chocolate syrup and have cup seltzer water mix milk and syrup first then and seltzer water. I use almond milk. Love to see you hunt down the iconic drink
Omg, i loved the sarcasm, i was cracking up how "affordable " those items were.. lol. I live 5 min away from Cafe Panna and sometimes the line goes for 2 blocks for their ice cream!!! Unreal. I never had the urge to try:)
OMG, the prices snobs will pay for overpriced food. I couldn’t work out where to cry with laughter or sob as you compared prices. I totally love both Trade Joe’s and Wholefoods ❤️❤️❤️
Sadly some people THINK that, because it costs more IT IS Better Quality,,,,,, (Trader Joe’s and Costco sell Name Brand products under the Kirkland label).
Now I understand why an American friend who lives here in Spain always takes her visitors to the El Corte Inglés supermarket. They really are some of the best supermarkets in the world.
Living in chelsea , I stopped shopping at the supermarkets since they opened Target on 23rd & 8th Ave. They have everything i need for my grocery needs and save a lot more money.
youre a real one for drinking a detox juice on your way to shopping around the area. it could have turned ugly at any minute. i hope you were around some bathrooms. lmao
Lol - you can see my apartment in this video - I've visited one of these grocery stores - once - and had an offensively expensive grab and go sandwich and I agree with your determination.
Oishi Berry is the strawberry that tastes like heaven grown by a Japanese company in New Jersey. You can find it at Hmart (the best grocery store in New York) for $14.99 and even cheaper at Fresh Direct for $11.99, although everything at Hmart is always fresher.
My bf shops at the Trader Joes you went to, his family shops at the Citarella you went to. They've given me food in Citarella reusable grocery bags. After seeing the prices, now i feel like a peasant lmfao great video tho
Having lived on the UES for 30 years. I did not shop at Eli's, Citerella, & went to EAT Cafe 1x. Never again for that one. Insane price for a bagel. I only shopped at Fairway. Butterfield is only good for the frozen yogurt in summer from the sidewalk window.
As an ex-New Yorker I got such a chuckle out of your video, with I think the 'fan favorite'. being the peanut butter and jelly 'middle school' sandwich. Would love to see you actually find a local middle school cafeteria product to compare. At this rate only a Cartel Soldato will be able to afford the strawberries. Or a Tren de Aragua smash-and-grab.
Nice tour of UES grocery stores! I do think you need to be strategic though. I have heard the ice cream at Butterfield’s is awesome so you probably nailed that. As for Citerella, it’s all about their seafood counter for me - a bit pricier than other places but not outrageous and great variety and quality. I make a beeline to that and skip most everything else in the store.
The other Caffe Panna location in NYC almost always has an insanely long line - and that's the only other place in Manhattan you can buy the ice cream. Between the convenience, and the quality I think that the ice cream is undoubtedly worth it.
Even though I'm on a serious austerity budget---I bought bacon/eggs/home fried potatoes at the Citarella hot bar in Southampton, NY and it was DELICIOUS. Some things are just worth every penny. That Cafe Pana ice cream looked pretty good. One has to have a discerning eye in those types of places.
I hope u put out a new vid tomorrow or xmas eve..im visiting NY again after moving fro there an need to try some new things...ur videos have made me try places ive never heard of
All the Trader Joe's across the country have the same prices and service. I been to that one you were at and here in the Atlanta area (Peachtree Corners) has the same prices. So I guess it is true. One store I liked when I was in town is Amish Market, I thought for NYC it was very reasonable.
It would have been good if you had done some price comparison on certain food items like the pistaccios, bread, ice cream and other comparative products from other supermarkets just to show the mark up and how you're often not paying more for quality or better taste...I bet even that ice cream you could get just as good for half the price.
When I used to visit NYC and stay with friends, I loved going into Dean & DeLuca. Its a shame that that is gone. I am not sure if the building is still there even
Butterfireld’s is in Carnegie Hill and a block away from the Met Museum. The prices have to offset the expenses for that shop being on Madison and 85th St.

Costco is cheaper.
Isn't Aldi the same as Trader Joe's? I am shocked that Manhattan has a Trader Joes. I heard good things about it.
As an ex NYC'er I really enjoyed this!
same. you couldnt pay me enough billions to move back to manhattan. zero community. terrible quality of life. ripoff prices. high crime. mega ultra high taxes. what's not to love?
so did you go to another country?
Crazy prices for food.
Jon! Awesome video! I might pay a visit to one of these stores during my next visit to NYC!
I'll stick with Aldi.
where outside Germany?
@@jamesclarkmaxwell-v2n Aldi has thousands of locations in the USA
Aldi is a hit and miss kinda place to shop. Sometimes i can find a few good things there, but there's not enough high quality items or enough variety to do an entire single grocery haul there.
@@kaylawaters2691 WEGMANS (not Aldi) is opening soon in NYC. I got them confused.
Aldis is hit or miss like the previous comment. I did my entire shopping there and was very annoyed lol
I thought Trader Joe's was a bit pricey compared to UK prices, these prices are next level. A great watch though, awesome idea!
oh no... Trader Joes is cheap here. Vs everything else.
Yeah TJ's is probably the cheapest or one of the cheapest grocery stores here in the US. Aldi's is very cheap but yuck, I compared to TJ's Aldi ranks one of the bottom for me but TJs is very popular.
Trader Joe’s is the best deal in the everywhere I’ve been in NY, CA, AZ, OR and WA.
I applaud the business owners for being able to pull off the biggest scam in grocery market. 👏👏👏👏
Oh my God, I love the subway signs in the kitchen! And the drinking glasses reminiscent of 56 Leonard
reminiscent of 56...durrr
Trader Joe's was a godsend when I lived in the village :)
This is super helpful as I just moved here from LA a couple days ago! Still explroing local grocery options..
Cool video!! I enjoyed every minute of it
Great video!
Fed 6 of us and we still had plenty of leftovers for just under $300
Way too much… thats just sinful 😢😢😢
Merry Christmas ❤🎄
I love Citerella - been going there for years. Its best to go to shop for there for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner items. I just go there 3 times a year for gourmet items - the cooked and prepared food and meat fish counter are the best.
I used to shop at both Citarella and Eli's. It's about making choices. You don't have to buy the $20 rooftop-grown tomatoes at Eli's. They have other great things. Citarella makes great tea cakes :D
those spanish potato chips in a paint can are that expensive or more everywhere they're sold. It's some kind of trendy gift item
i figured it was b.c of the tin.
Charles chips
I get paying more for fancy cheese but how do you make potato chips special? Same goes for eggs.
@@calvincoolidge1207 Depends on the eggs. I’ve had Nellie’s eggs that were as good as fresh from the neighbor’s hen house. Really good eggs are different in flavor, color and texture.
Barnum was absolutely right!😆😆😆
New Yorker here.
Bob if we get poop from a Bloopy and call it fresh river cheese... Hmmm
That $16 ice cream looks good! Maybe only one worth a splurge...
i probably would pay again.
Reminds me of my very rare (non dairy) ice cream splurges. Either Ben and Jerrys in a pint or 2 scoops with a couple of toppings from a local ice cream shop is less than half that much and i consider that paying too much for it. Lol.
A lot of the options were just overpriced organics but that was one of the few solely dedicated to flavor.
$10 for a PB&J is WILD
$40 potato chips...forget it hahahaha
😂
forgotten, sick 🥜
Cape Cod potato chips are excellent and about $5 for a bag and likely equal or better quality. I am fine with Aldi store brand though.
You could have got a huge hero with fresh ham and cheese and many toppings if you just wen to bodega for like $5. That $32 sandwich was pitiful 😂😂
Erewhon in LA is crazy expensive too!
Lol it's a scarm
@ You mean scam, right? It’s ridiculous, and I’d never shop there
Love to see you hunt for the iconic New York egg cream see if any classic soda fountains still out there . I make my own bot living in NYC these days. Use half a cup of milk. Three table spoons u bet chocolate syrup and have cup seltzer water mix milk and syrup first then and seltzer water. I use almond milk. Love to see you hunt down the iconic drink
Is there a ShopRite, Stop & Shop, Wegmans, Whole Foods, Acme, or Aldi in or around Manhattan? My Borough has several supermarkets in Bergen County.
There is an Aldi in the River East Plaza along with a Costco. 117th St at the East river.
Yes to Aldi, one though. There is a Wegmans and plenty of Whole Foods.
the korean writing on the spanish potato chips in a tin says something like "you'll get charmed by these chips"
Omg, i loved the sarcasm, i was cracking up how "affordable " those items were.. lol. I live 5 min away from Cafe Panna and sometimes the line goes for 2 blocks for their ice cream!!! Unreal. I never had the urge to try:)
There's another pricey grocery store in Chinatown of all places called Happier Grocery which is probably the closest thing to Erewhon.
OMG, the prices snobs will pay for overpriced food. I couldn’t work out where to cry with laughter or sob as you compared prices. I totally love both Trade Joe’s and Wholefoods ❤️❤️❤️
I've been waiting for this video.😊
Hey Jon. It is what it is. We all have to eat. Try buying a steak at the market at Grand Central Terminal. 😮 Thanks man. 👋🏽
It’s criminal act to sell a sandwich for $32! They should put the owner in jail for life!
It's marketing to a wealthy clientele
@@arfriedman4577think of it as a sandwich with an anti-poor person tax tacked on.
Thanks for the tour. I liked that glass you were using for the orange juice!
youre a real one for drinking a detox juice on your way to shopping around the area. it could have turned ugly at any minute. i hope you were around some bathrooms. lmao
Ain't no way bro ate the Gruyere with the rind still on it 13:05.
After Citarella and before Butterfield Market, you should have gone to Agata & Valentina and bought their taramasalata.
And here's me thinking Waitrose here in the UK was expensive. Good lord some of those prices made my wallet yelp
As a Brit I think Sainsbury’s supermarket in the Uk is more expensive compared to Waitrose.
@Firestorm055x Yeah Sainsbury's is up there for sure. And Morrisons doesn't feel that cheap either
@deathb…. I feel for pensioners and those with low income who are trying to make ends meet. And food prices rising doesn’t help.
I wish we had Harrod's Food Hall here in NYC.
The other Caffe Panna location in NYC almost always has an insanely long line - and that's the only other place in Manhattan you can buy the ice cream. Between the convenience, and the quality I think that the ice cream is undoubtedly worth it.
You forgot to mention the unhealthy choice to eat all that sugar loaded mixture of food coloring and heavy cream with sugar.
Keep up the good work 👍
I hope u put out a new vid tomorrow or xmas eve..im visiting NY again after moving fro there an need to try some new things...ur videos have made me try places ive never heard of
Thank you so much for your video.
There's a TJ's under the Brooklyn Bridge! WHAT?!! I'm going when I get back to NY
It's under the Queensboro bridge!
@@HereBeBarr Thank you my friend!
All the Trader Joe's across the country have the same prices and service. I been to that one you were at and here in the Atlanta area (Peachtree Corners) has the same prices. So I guess it is true. One store I liked when I was in town is Amish Market, I thought for NYC it was very reasonable.
Why do they call it Amish market?
Any association with Amish or just a name?
Passed by there looks nice
@maril1379 have no idea, but it is a small chain of supermarkets. Saw another one downtown.
Mitsuwa, not in NY, but they have white strawberries from Japan that's way more than those Korean ones. Try it Jon and let us know.
Oh i haven't been there in years! In Edgewater.
Makes me feel much better about Trader Joe’s 😆
😂
Charles Chips were the first potato chips in a can, double the size of ur Spanish version.
It would have been good if you had done some price comparison on certain food items like the pistaccios, bread, ice cream and other comparative products from other supermarkets just to show the mark up and how you're often not paying more for quality or better taste...I bet even that ice cream you could get just as good for half the price.
Spanish potato chips are delicious, with a very distinctive taste and texture. They don't need to dowse the chips in salt; they only need just enough.
When I used to visit NYC and stay with friends, I loved going into Dean & DeLuca. Its a shame that that is gone. I am not sure if the building is still there even
How did you get the subway signs in your apartment? did they give them away?
His kitchen IS a Subway Stop! 🤣🚇
Love James' kitchen
Butterfireld’s is in Carnegie Hill and a block away from the Met Museum. The prices have to offset the expenses for that shop being on Madison and 85th St.
