      That's on top of most dragons having a secondary type that also resists at least one of these. A mono dragon would take 1/8 damage. A dragon/flying (the most common combination) would take 1/16 damage since it resists grass twice.
      Ground dragons (Flygon, Garchomp, Zygarde) would be the most "it risk" from this move, taking a whopping 1/2 damage

      Only stronger
      The comparison to Flying Press or Tri-Attack doesn't really work here. Those are both single moves, done by a single pokémon. Triple Finish is three separate moves, used by three separate pokémon, all fired at the same target - therefore, each move should have its relevant type's effectiveness applied separately
      Also, even if we ignore Beat Up, it would still be legal in a triple battle

    • @shadowbanningcommentssucks3551
      @shadowbanningcommentssucks3551 2 роки тому +29

      @@TheAnalyticalEngine ofc course it would still be legal since you can technically go recreate it in Gen V. Just get a Charizard, Ivysaur, and a Squirtle, and tell them to use Fire Blast, Hydro Pump, and Solar Beam at a single target. Triple Finish would be considered a single move, and I see it working in the same way as a Z-move, being single use. The easiest fix is giving it the normal typing of Tri Attack, then giving it the "Guaranteed Super Effective" effect, similar to the guaranteed crits the Urshifu's have, so that it's always super effective regardless of the opposing pokemon's type.

      @@zachrodan7543 iirc, every game that has a dragon gym leader has and area to get ice pokemon before them. Plus ice type moves can be found early on in some solid water type pokemon
      The real problem is that ice is a glass cannon type that just makes a pokemon weaker overall just by having it. It has 4 weaknesses and they only type it resists is itself. In most cases, it's better to go without the STAB bonus in favor of not stacking on unnecessary weaknesses.
      The best combination with ice is water because it neutralizes 2 ice weaknesses without doubling down on at least one other. Though, this drags down the viability of the water pokemon because it no longer resists fire or steel only to gain doubling down on the existing ice resist.

    and yes, that's how the damage formula works out. double kick is functionally a 60 base power move, bullet seed hitting thrice is functionally a 75 base power move, etc. so hitting something with fire blast, hydro pump, and solar beam simultaneously would equate to a move with their summed base power before type match ups. the only way it gets more complicated than that is if you treated it as if it was being used by _three different pokemon_ with their individual stats and levels and etc. kinda like beat up

    Great video as always! I think the move could work like triple axel, having multiple attacks (three of them) with each attack having a different property of either grass, water or fire. I don't know how the battles are coded so STAB, type effectiveness and damage calculations might already be set from the first hit, but I think it would be more simple for players if the move was split into three separate hits rather than combining them

    As much as I love the idea of more moves like flying press, I'd guess we're unlikely to see more. I feel like it's not a coincidence that Flying Press can never hit any given type 4x. It's fairly possible that a combination that could potentially exceed 4x against the right Pokemon might have complications in the actual code. Or otherwise just be too strong -- A particularly tanky Pokemon might be able to handle a 4x effective move, but against an 8x or worse, it's pretty screwed.
    I thought a lot about this, back in the day, while thinking "Muddy water should be like flying press!" Before realizing how broken it would be if it *were.* Water and ground share advantages against two different types!

    Ok, but can we talk about this move's base power, and the fact that Charizard is using multiple fire blasts at the same time? Even IF dragon 8x resisted this move, that's gonna be a solid chunk of damage.

    I would also suggest something like this (also for triple attack to make its typing make more sense)
    A multiattack move, like double-slap or double kick, that hits three times, one is fire, one is grass and the other is water (fire ice and electric for tri attack)
    This would rule out cases like rock being only x2 instead of x4 (or ground's immunity to electric in tri attack's case)

    I personally think Tri-Attack should use averages since one Pokémon is essentially firing 3 different types of attacks in one turn. Its single-type effectiveness chart would then be:
    -Flying: 5/3 (1.67)
    -Grass: 3/2 (1.5)
    -Bug: 4/3 (1.33)
    -Steel, Ice: 7/6 (1.17)
    -Electric, Rock: 5/6 (0.83)
    -Fire: 2/3 (0.67)
    -all other types: neutral (1)
    so it would not be a bad move whatsoever, being purely an upgrade from simply being normal type except for being resisted slightly by electric and fire. (Note: for dual types, multiplication of type effectiveness only works for each individual third and not necessarily the entire move; for example, a grass/flying type would take 7/3 or 2.33 times the damage instead of 5/2 or 2.5 times.)
    As for STAB, you could either calculate each third of the move separately or just give normal types STAB with it since the move would likely still be normal type; however, I think it should be able to hit ghost types since they are not immune to fire, ice, or electric.

    Yes it takes the chart of times but the damage would be like
    ((Squirtle Sp.attack + hydropump base power)+(Ivysaur sp. Attack + hyperbeam base)+(Charizard sp. Attack + fire blast base)) = attack power and you plug that in the damage calculation formula

    Easiest fix that comes to mind is making the base type of the move be the one of the Pokémon that used it (Grass, Water, and Fire. Not counting Poison and Flying.)
    Also you could get triple finish legally in a triple battle if you make all three Pokémon target a single one (provided it doesn't faint during attacks).

  • @cobaltprime9467
    @cobaltprime9467 2 роки тому

    That’s a gimmick I could get onboard for a combo attack. Like the triple finish, but it’s a one time attack of 2-3 Pokémon. When you have 3 Pokémon that are compatible, you can perform a super attack. Like Z moves but… idk there’s 3 types in the attack. If you have the 3 starters and you’re against a rock type, fire doesn’t do much anything but water and grass do .25 more damage each.
    You have to have Pokémon that are compatible, like all the starters, no repeat types and it’s based on their primary type. Like Gardevoir would have a psychic attack not fairy, and ironically wouldn’t be compatible with Gallade since fighting is the secondary. But it can go with Sirfetched and Clefairy for a psychic, fighting, and fairy triple attack.

    This might just be me being more of an anime/manga fan than a video game fan, but I always thought that if they were going to implement Triple Finish in the games, they'd go the Adventures/PokeSpe route and have it be a combi of Blast Burn, Frenzy Plant and Hydro Cannon, which were the original signature moves of the starters. It's usually the "ultimate move finisher" for the protagonists in the manga- the one that sticks out to me is the one from the Emerald arc where all the protagonists up to that point use a triple Triple Finish (three groups of starters using their respective moves) plus a triple Volt Tackle to take down a fake Kyogre created by a Jirachi wish.

    The way that beat up works isn't that all of the Pokemon's attacks are combined into 1 move, they each get their separate turn. And if we look at the animation for triple finish, the Pokemon are using different moves at the same time, individually, instead of, say, combining 3 beams into 1 big beam. So the way i think it could work is by having Charizard use a fire attack, then Ivysaur uses a grass attack, then Squirtle uses a water attack, in the same way that beat up does, just with each hit having a different type instead of them all being dark type. But that's just my two cents.

  • @starguardianbasi2938
    @starguardianbasi2938 2 роки тому

    You could have also used the link attack logic from Mystery Dungeon. Since the move could be considered Solar Beam, then Hydro Pump, then Fireblast. Essentially making the move a triple hit attack (like triple Axel) with a different type each time.

  • @QuintaFeira12

    Lockstin didn't even consider a possibility: That Triple FInish is NOT one move, but three separate ones. Well, technically, he did, when he made the averages chart, however, he didn't fully explore the idea.
    If triple finish did literally function as all three moves, a multi-attack hitting three times for each type, calculated separately, then it would have gargantuan coverage. The only question left would be figuring out the base power for each hit.

    I think the difference between Triple Finish and Flying Press is, the flying and fighting properties of Flying Press are perfectly melded, meaning the multiplication makes sense. Triple Finish, however, is three differently typed attacks hitting at the same time, so averaging would probably work better. In fact, Tri-Attack could probably be retyped this way as well.

  • @Agent719
    @Agent719 2 роки тому

    As I've seen other people point out, Triple Finish is a team-attack from three pokemon performing one move each, unlike Flying Press and Tri Attack. So honestly, I think the "each move does a third of the total damage" is probably the right way to go. And since each of those moves is a 120 base power move, Dragon-types can still get wrecked by it.

    • @aaajeear8654
      @aaajeear8654 2 роки тому

      not really, dragon types would receive 12.5% of the damage thanks to their 3x resistance, which means that even with the combined base power reaching 340, it would get reduced to a pathetic 39.1 base power, just as strong as scratch.

    This is interesting, but I think it comes down to it just being three simultaneous attacks, not one move. I think the averages would make sense... but you'd also have to have it be upwards of 300 base power to really reflect that. I'm more interested in what downsides they'd slap onto a super-move like that, like maybe sacrificing a third or half of the max HP from each of those party members?

  • @draikken_
    @draikken_ 2 роки тому

    Logically I would go with the average effectiveness rather than the combined, since Triple Finish is hitting the opponent with three individual moves. For Flying Press it makes sense for it to be combined since it's one move that combines the types; it's not hitting the opponent with both a fighting impact and a gust of wind, it's hitting the opponent with a fighting impact boosted by wind power.

    i woud treat the attack as 3 independant attacks, each one hitting with the individual element and having its own chance of crit/miss.
    Probably would reduce the damage total, cause 110+120+110=340 is a huge amount of damage, even exploision deals only 250, and faints the pokemon after use.
    Since it is attack many times, it could destroy a substitute and deal damage, assuming for example, the first attack breaks it, and the other 2 hit the pokemon. For that case, I would have the moves hit in the order of fire-> water -> grass, since in real life, being wet protects from fire, but being burn does not protect from high pressure water, and solar beam should be the last one, since it requires charging

Basically like the Z-attacks, but when you use it you choose 2 (or 1 depending on the fight) Pokémon aside from the currently active one and choose an attack for each. They could make it a cool mechanic, with each Pokemon having to have Triple Finish as a move, it using the stats of the pokemon representing their type, and as a balance you can't use it if one of those Pokemon is unable to attack. (Faint, Para-Chance, etc)

    Triple Finish might be inspired by the Manga. In the pokemon adventures manga, Blue, Red, and Green band together with their fully evolved starters to strike the fused bird Zapmolcuno with a powerful elemental blast. It was some combination of Flamethrower, Hydro Pump, and Solar Beam if I'm not wrong. Maybe Saur used Vine Whip, I dunno. Either way it broke the fusion. Later on, once gen 3 mechanics came in, this Triple Finish was replaced by them using the elemental hyper beams all at once. Even had some Volt Tackles coming in. Pretty cool scene, they blew up a energy construct Kyogre.

    Also, how much damage would the move do?
    We could add the moves Fire Blast, Solar Beam, and Hydro Pump together, but that would make a whooping 340 power. that would be insane. The most powerful move by my knowledge is Clangorous Soulblaze, which does 185, AND it’s a exclusive Z-move! ( Techincally Stored Power is the most powerful move because Its maximum possible base power is 860, but you have to have all your stats boosted to there max out so it’s not really the most powerful move )
    We also could divide each move by 2 and add them. That would make the power be 170, which is also pretty insane.
    What I think gamefreak would do is make the move 150 power and have it charge a turn, but that’s just what I think.

    Idea. It's a multihit attack, with the average base power of fire blast, solar beam, and hydro pump, divided by 3, hits one hit with water, then grass, then fire. That definitely feels like how pokemon would do it if they did. But also I feel with how this move is in smash bros, maybe instead triple finish...
    Is a triple battle move, but that feels weak. I feel like what they should do is add it as a special move to use when you do a rotation battle. Where you can choose an attack from each of your 3 pokemon out to all use on the 1 the opponent has out. That genuinely feels like a fun addition they could add if they brought back rotation battles. And I already think they should. It functioning as a rotation battle move honestly seems like the best option in my opinion, but I feel like my first choice would be more likely a choice game freak would make, being they cut triple battles and never looked back.
