      Actually I think the reason why there were no gen 3 characters in season 7, is because when effy, cassie and cook were already adults, the gen 3 characters just finished school, so they wouldn’t make an episode about someone from gen 3 when they just got out of school and nothing more happened, I’m not sure, but it’s what I think

    Gen 2 was good but the ending was terrible in my opinion, the show dealt with things mostly in a very real way, but sum crazy psychiatrist taking control of effy was already rlly weird but then he gets mad at Freddie cus Freddie doesn't trust him so he kills Freddie with a bat, and u only find that out at the end and all u get is Cook getting revenge, wen Chris died in season 2 it was fore shadowed for a while and it made sense cus his brother died of the same illness and it was sad but it was built up to in a great way, they tried to make it dramatic with one of them dying, literally killing of one of the nicest most caring person in the show, I'd rather if they kept him alive, it wouldn't ruin the show

    I tried watching Skins series 5 but I just didn't enjoy the characters the same way i did for gens 1 and gens 2. When I seen seires 7, I thought that because one of the episodes was focused on Effy and the other was focused on Cassie that the third episode would be focused on someone from gens 3 but I was happy to find out that it was about Cook. I think the reason gens 1 and 2 worked was because of the Tony and Effy connection. Now I haven't seen Gens 3 but I think the only connection they have is the school. It's a shame as would've loved to of seen more of some gens 1 and 2. Especially in Cassie's story.

    Generation 1 was my favorite by far. The chemistry between the actors, the storylines, the characters, the music... when the creators wanted to, Jamie and Bryan were really good at making characters that were exaggerated and out there enough to be entertaining but viscerally emotional enough to be very real and easy to care about at the same time and generation one was a great example of just that. I think I was enamored with the first group in a way that I had never been enamored with a group of fictional teenagers before so when Chris died I was devastated and when the gang left I was devastated twice over. But at the end, I was content with their sendoff albeit saddened by their departure. I didn’t see it as a happy ending or a sad ending. Just.... life. The end of their ‘era’ if you will.
    Generation 2 was meh. It had its good moments but quite a lot of it was kind of ridiculous to watch. I think 2nd gen had the most viewers during its run which surprised me. I remember being shocked by how much of a fan favorite Cook was in middle school because I couldn’t stand him and I thought Effy’s character arc was really underwhelming and.... bland? Her characterization didn’t go the way that I thought it would, to keep it frank. And when she started losing it, it was very sobering to see how Effy’s breakdown wasn’t taken that seriously at all. It seemed as if other people watching almost immediately started romanticizing it. As gen2 went on, I really felt like Effy got to be more of an object of desire rather than someone people saw as a human being. A girl that other girls aspired to be like and emulate and a girl that boys wanted to be with. And both the audience and characters on the show projected their insecurities onto her a lot. In gen 1 I saw her as a very interesting character that I wanted to know everything about whereas when she actually became the lead protagonist I slowly lost interest in her and often pitied her.
    (Unpopular opinions, I know.)
    And that love triangle was almost a chore to watch the entirety of generation 2. By the end of season 3, I was way more into Naomi + Emily than both Freddie/Effy and Cook/Effy because their chemistry was so nicely built and progressed slowly enough to not seem rushed but also fast enough to make you want to see more of them on-screen. And then they fucked Naomily up for most of season 4 (and then permanently in season 7.... which I like to pretend never aired).
    I think one of the main reasons I liked the first generation the most was because it was the only generation where I was actually convinced that the group were all good friends? So it was easy for me to get comfortable with them because they had already seemed so comfortable with eachother. Not only that, but since the group’s foundation was already set, when their episode rolls around you truly got the sense that you were learning who they were as individuals apart from their respective roles within the friend group.
    For the first episode of generation two, it was ‘the three musketeers’ Freddie, Cook, and JJ, the twins + Naomi, and then Effy and Panda (then Thomas just kinda... shows up) and then over the series, we watch the writers try to put them together until they slowly become a friend group. But this time around, instead of focusing on getting to know them as individuals, the writers spent a lot of time writing social gatherings and party scenes and creating scenarios under which the gang is forced to interact and get to know eachother. And for a bit it almost seemed as if the characters slowly got to be defined by their misdeeds and interactions with the others rather than being able to have a full sense of self.
    For example: Who was Freddie besides an indecisive boy that loved Effy and weed? I didn’t like Cook but at least I felt like I got to know quite a bit of who he was as a person even though he was pretty stagnant in terms of growing from his past wrongdoings. And I adored Naomi and Emily but I still got a taste of who they were outside of their relationship. I don’t feel like I *ever* really got a sense of who Freddie was so I felt bad when I didn’t feel anything when he died although his death was very shocking (you know why). Not to mention the friendship units apart from the group weren’t even that convincing. I can count genuinely sweet ‘three musketeers’ moments on one hand and one of those moments is from a Skins Unseen/Short and not even an episode. We had to wait until season 4 to see Cook being a genuinely good friend to Freddie and even then it seemed too little, too late. Not to mention the fact that JJ hardly even interacted with Cook and Freddie in season 4. JJ was around them a lot in season 3 but it seemed more like he was around out of habit rather than because the boys actually wanted him around. ‘The Three Musketeers’ would’ve been better off being called Tom and Jerry because Cook and Freddie spent more screentime fighting than getting along and JJ was hardly ever truly appreciated by either of them or even the writers considering he hardly got any screentime outside of his own episodes. Panda and Effy had less and less interactions as the gen went on which surprised me because I thought they’d grow to be as close as Tony and Sid. Perhaps my expectations were really high for 2nd generation but I just wasn’t as into them as I was into the first lot.
    I won’t even go into gen 3. I do think I deserve an award for being able to push through every episode, though, when I finished it. Because it definitely took a lot of hard work and perserverance. Almost as if I was watching a parody of Skins instead of Skins itself. I tried to watch the US version and I was even fairly hopeful about its release because Bryan Elsley was involved but, alas.... the creators couldn’t even recreate something so brilliant.
    All in all, this was the only teen drama I was able to really get into as a teen. It was definitely a refreshing take on teen dramas as this show acted as an anti-thesis to a lot of American teen dramas that were airing on TV at the time - Gossip Girl, The O.C., 90210, Glee, that god awful Degrassi...none of them appealed to me like this one did.

      @SophiaSuki3 4 роки тому +13

      I totally agree with everything you said! I thought I was going crazy trying to explain to others my thoughts on this show and having them disagree with everything.
      I do, however like the second generation better. Not in terms of events, or plot, but in terms of friendship. The teens in the first generation were such bad friends, the boys were sexist and Jal was always the one to snap some sense into the others when they did something bad, though she got nothing in return. They only seemed to truly come together when Chris passed away. Also, everything was unsanitary, they kept throwing up on each other and everyone’s room was really dirty except Tony’s and Jal’s. The chemistry was real tho, like you said. I found myself crying with the first generation cause I was really rooting for the characters, the second generation not so much.
      It did bother me when Effy tried to take her life by the end of that one episode and the writers just skipped that and moved on to JJ’s episode..What? Like what happened? They didn’t let us know if she was safe, and didn’t say anything about her for the whole episode, as if it never happened. They only mentioned her again after JJ’s episode.They did this many times over the season, at least in the first generation, when it was a certain character’s episode, they still picked up on where they left off in the previous one and showed the character interacting with the rest, they didn’t focus on one person and their background.
      Also hated the fact that only Effy’s mom visited her in the hospital. What about her dad? I get that they’re divorced, but wouldn’t he be concerned if his daughter tried to kill herself. And what about her brother?? He could’ve taken a break from college to check on her knowing they’re so close to each other. And these two really cared about Effy, I’d believe it if her mom wasn’t the one to visit cause she ignored her most of the time.
      Cook surprised me to say the least. I thought he’d be a lost cause since his parents were never around and he practically lived by himself. So he was never taught what was right and what was wrong, but he eventually got some sense into him when he lived with his mom shortly, though it was wayyyy too late. He still made it. I feel like if his friends confronted him more whenever he did something bad, he would’ve turned out to be a great person. But for some reason, they both seemed scared of him. Although, he was the only person putting the most effort in their friendship. Like when he got mad at Freddie when he didn’t do anything about his feelings for Effy, he just wanted him to say he loved her out loud, but he was too much of a pussy. Or when he kept checking on JJ when he started having his episodes again.
      The obsession with Effy is just..too much. I don’t understand why everyone loves her. If this was in a real life setting and she persistently broke someone’s heart, they’d just learn from it and move on. No one would keep themselves around someone who does nothing but hurt them. They may have been charmed with her mysterious personality, but even when both Freddie and Cook dated her. They never got a clear image of who she was as a person, I don’t think anyone would date someone who would never open up about their feelings and just exist mysteriously.
      And I hated Freddie, he said he had a crush on her but never did anything to win her until she came to him when she got jealous of his relationship with Katie. I don’t think he deserves that. It’s very selfish of her.
      Also, I remember Effy and her mother requesting a different therapist before Freddie died. But by the last episode, we see the same old one checking on her in the facility saying he needs to leave town, and she said she wouldn’t know what to do without him.. So how come they didn’t stick to that either and didn’t offer any explanation as to why she changed her mind about the therapist?

      You’re right in the money on everything. Like Gen 1 is so rewatchable and never gets old to me. Gen 2 is fine cuz of some character (I’m part of those who loved Cook cuz I related to that anger that angst and craziness in my teen and I also related to the absence of Freddie his way of almost not being there and being undecisive) I fucking loved JJ cuz he was weird and grew with it not out of it embracing his weirdness. I still liked Effy and all but her arc is just unbearable to watch. Naomi and Emily relationship was just perfect until they fucked it up but hey they did the same with fucking Cassie running out to FUCKING AMAERICA!!! I thought series 1 was really great. Expect for episodes 1 and 6. I know in ep 1 they were still struggling to establish the tone and developing the characters in limited time. In one bit they get invited to a girls house party so Chris steals aload of their phones and then Tony punches someone in the head, they then steal a car and drive it into a river (what a nice group), plus there's no consequences for doing that for them for any of those actions. Episode 2 though is a real improvement because it focuses in more on a few key characters. Series 3 takes longer to get going but does get good between episodes 5-8, as the conflict reaches its climax. Generally though like all good TV actions do have consequences, Sid's unintentional actions lead Cassie to attempt suicide. Tony's actions mean him losing his friends. Chris and his wild parties and drug use makes him homeless.

    @lw3646 4 роки тому +16

    The main story of season 1 was pretty simple, a love triangle thing. Sid and Tony both love Michelle, though Tony doesn't act like it. Cassie loves Sid but it's unrequited, Sid doesn't seem to realise. At the end Sid loves Cassie leaving Tony and Michelle to be together. All the controversial issues and teen shenanigans were there in the background to spice things up and add some colour, humour and edge to the show. Its one reason season 1 was so good. Season 2 though pretty much does the whole Sid Michelle Cassie story line again even though it was settled last season. Plus the characters aren't as sweet and likeable this time round. Everyone is just glum and angry in season 2. Plus all the boys cheat on their girlfriends because they become idiots suddenly, like Chris and Sid. Add to this the new characters like Michelle's step sister and Sketch who were both unnecessary and bad additions, neither are relatable or normal. Season 3 goes back to the simple love triangle concept again. Effy must choose between Cook and Freddie. JJ likes her too but its made clear he's got no chance. Pandora is also sleeping with Cook but there's no love story there, that little addition just felt strange. The fact the triangle is not properly resolved is annoying though as that's what it was building to. They obviously wanted to make you watch season 4 to find out. It becomes more complex too when when Freddie starts a separate love triangle with Katie and Effy. Fast forward to season 4 and now Cook still loves Effy but she only loves Freddie so that triangle is shut down, season 4 is partly about Cook coming to terms with that, and how he deals with that pain and anger. Again though in season 4 everything is glum and grim. Only Katie becomes a more likeable 3D character. But Emily spends the whole season crying, Naomi feeling guilty, Thomas and Pandora look fed up the whole season. Its like the writers couldn't think of a good way to build conflict in a relationship expect just have them randomly cheat on each other. The writers clearly had no idea what to do with JJ this season either. His development was finished after season 3, learning to be happier and to stop worrying about being normal. You could take him out of season 4 and it wouldn't make any difference overall. The only good exception to the relationship writing was Freddie and Effy who have serious drama, not because of cheating or lack of love, but because of Effy's mental health problems. That could have been an okay storyline without the silly Dr Evil character ruining it.

    Some of the stuff which they wrote towards the end was so far fetched and outlandish that it gives you a renewed appreciation for series 1. They managed to base it all around pretty plausible college stuff, coursework, a few house parties, fancying your teacher, just hanging out, trying to buy cannabis but not knowing how, taking part in a music competition. Against this backdrop they also wrote a really sweet love story and developed some of the characters too like Tony and Michelle.

    I know personally too and have heard lots of others talk about the effect characters have on an audience. When you're a kid you might watch a cowboy film or a superhero film and want to dress up and pretend to be that character afterwards. Teenagers though still get influenced too by TV and films which I think is why it was important to show in Series 1 that the cool popular leader Tony who you might think in ep 1 and 2 is the one we're meant to aspire to be, well, that's not actually the case. He's introduced as the handsome, well dressed, intelligent guy who has the beautiful girlfriend, the loyalty of his best mate/loser friend Sid, everyone seems to worship him. But through the series we see how he uses his charm and good looks to bully and manipulate people. He's selfish, egotistical and cruel. His actions lead to him eventually losing his popularity and he's forced to confront the results his bad actions have had on other people. He then starts to change as a character into a more mature, caring and reflective person. It's the same kind of character arc which Jamie gets in Game of Thrones, Steve in Stranger Things and Hank in Breaking Bad. Sid, while becoming more confident in season 1 is still basically remains the good well intentioned boy he was in S1E1, in the end it looks like he's rewarded by getting the girl. S3 though is more complex. Effy seems to be the main female character. I know she had a bit of an influence on girls at the time though but her character is not necessarily a very healthy one that people should want to copy. She seems so wild, apathetic and distant from people. Right from series 1 where we see her at 14 partying all night, playing with fire on a bus, not communicating and engaging in risky behaviour without caring about the wellbeing of herself or others. This should really be setting alarm bells ringing if this was your sister or daughter. As you get older though you learn it's best not to try and act like a fictional character, just be yourself. A fictional character is always going to be impossible to emulate.

    But Shameless is just your preference. Skins is more relatable in the sense that once everyone grows up, they also tend to grow apart. That is why the generations changed every 2 seasons because it wouldve been just unrealistic for them all to still be around each other especially when u consider that at the end of gen 2 Thomas and Pandora went to America, Freddie died, they all finished school and not only was Cook expelled but he was also on the run from the police. Skins is skins. Shameless is shameless and for the recored I actually liked the 3rd gen because I could relate to a character like Nick in so many ways.

  • @leew1598
    @leew1598 4 роки тому +3

    Skins made a big impact when it came out, it felt timely and spoke to a young audience. It wasn't a Kevin and Perry take on teenagers. It's not making fun of them. If anything it's the adults in the show who mostly are there for the comedy and to show how dysfunctional families are. There was nothing like Netflix back then so everyone was talking about it because there wasn't much else out there. Season 2 and 4 were too gloomy and far fetched for me, much less sense of fun. Seasons 1 and 3 did a better job at balancing the fun with the more serious issues and knew how to hint at subtler emotions and problems without hitting the audience over the head with heavy handed dialogue. The writers mostly couldn't think of good ways to develop conflict inside a relationship expect by just randomly have them cheat on each other. Thomas cheats on Pandora in S4Ep1 and in S4E2 it's revealed Naomi cheated on Emily, so they just spend the rest of the season doing the whole will they/won't they get back together. The whole Sid/Michelle/Tony love triangle was pulled out again in S2 even though it was dealt with perfectly and resolved in S1. Michelle also sort of regresses as a character in S2 and her actions seem messy and not true to her character. I think the show also put too much weight on it's leading love triangles and there were some characters who felt a bit like like secondary characters. For instance the season 1 finale is all about Sid/Tony/Michelle and Cassie sorting things out between them really. I can't even think of what Jal was doing in that one. With Season 3 again they made Cook/Freddie and Effy do much of the heavy lifting in terms of the plot and the writers maybe underestimated the popularity among fans of the Emily/Naomi love story. It was pretty big at the time to have this big lesbian love story on tv and everyone was routing for them which is partly why S4 felt annoying when they suddenly have Naomi cheat on Emily. In S4 though the writers maybe understood the fans wanted more screen time for characters like Emily, Pandora and Thomas. It was kind of disrespectful the way they weren't even in the finale of S3. What happened then was Effy and Freddie get pushed out a bit from S4, I don't think Effy even shows up for 3 episodes. So by the time you get to Freddie's episode in the middle you as a viewer actually want to see them again because it takes some weight off the other story lines which weren't really going anywhere. The best thing about S4 was Katie's character becoming a more fleshed out 3 dimensional person. Overall though as well as tackling the big issues and seeing the cute relationship dramas work themselves out all good shows need good character development. S1 had this for both Tony and Sid, it sort of drops off though in S2. Tony by the end of S2 is basically the same person as he was at the end of S1, so is Sid. I stopped watching after S4. I liked the way the show was filmed too. Maybe because it was low budget they filmed a lot of it in real suburban homes in Bristol. It helped give it a sense of realism that way. Like this could be you and your friends. I liked the dinner scenes with the parents and teens because they were funny but also kind of normal and relatable. Overall though it was a pretty unrealistic take on teen life. Where was all the studying, the part time work, the driving lessons, the trips out with your family? Of course after a year of non-stop partying they all get pretty much get great results.

  • @leew1598

    Another weird thing I didn't get about the finale of S3 as well as the weird setting, gloomy weather, etc was the way Effy just disappears for weeks. She's still a minor at the time. Has she stopped going to School since Ep8? Aren't Social Services involved? Doesn't her mother mind? It just doesn't quite make sense to me and they never really explain it.

    The 1st and 2nd generation were great imo. The 1st generation was the complete package, just great. I found the end of the second generation with the mental psychiatrist a bit bizarre and rather off-putting, there were much better (more realistic) ways to kill off a character. I would also have liked to see more of Panda's development, and I didn't find Freddie's character relatable, I didn't feel he developed.
    The 3rd generation was okay. There were some repetitions and some characters didn't really show enough development either, like Liv, Alex, Matt, Rich (after Grace's death) weren't really relatable anymore. Several plots did not make much sense and everything went back to drug abuse. I really can't think of a memorable moment in the 3rd gene 🤷, whereas the first two generations had many unforgettable bits.

  • @nairamdiam

    Gen 1 was great and had a realistic vibe, and the ending was satisfying. I was sad that in season 3 there will be nobody from gen 1 except Panda and Effy, but after watching few episodes, gen 2 became my favourite. The problems of gen 2 pepole were less realistic and harder to relate to, but it was just so great. Seeing everyone of them change and grow at some point, their troubles, their moments of happiness was just something else. But then, the ending. ;-; that was the worst way possible to end this series!!! Omg, they’ve destroyed such amazing plot, Freddie’s death was like a hit with a brick to the head, and then the emptyness after the final scene… I was so frustrated with that, so I didn’t watch gen 3, I felt that it won’t be any good like the rest. Season 7 was a totally different thing, it was good. It showed that adult life can be so dissapointing (Effy’s episodes) and dully (Cassie’s episodes), can be hard to change it for better and escape demons from the past (Freddie’s episodes). The show makes you bond with characters soooooo much if you’re young person, but it just cuts off the connection you have with them at some point

    A bit like the Simpsons, the earlier seasons revelled in some of the fun antics the group would get up to, house parties, drugs, winding their parents up. This was fine for a bit but they couldn't just do another season with the same stuff, it no longer shocks, delights or entertains. They felt they had to keep oneuping themselves each time. This was fine for a while till it started to get really far fetched. Opening scene of season 1 boy wakes up, works out, walks to school, phones his friends.
    Season 2, big dance number.
    Season 3, boy skateboards down Park Street
    Season 4 person leaps to their death in a nightclub.
    Season 5 girl is chased to college by a gang of bigoted schoolboys, she jumps on a mobility scouter and crashes into the School....
    Each one gets bigger and therefore more fantastical and ungrounded.

    Ottima analisi.

I think Euphoria S1 picks up from the legacy of Skins but in a far more dramatic way.. Sure we got a lil on that in series 2 but it kinda all ended at the funeral. In series six we got to see the long terms effects of grief, survivors guilt, and the various coping mechanisms that the characters used which skins never tackled b4 cuz the characters deaths were usually at the end.

    The 1st generation was by far the best, great group of diverse characters with brilliant storylines.
    The 2nd generation, season 3 was 5 stars absolutely incredible but season 4 was where the cracks began to show and where the shows downfall began, I found that season pointlessly dark. The 2nd gen was almost too dependent on Cook.
    The 3rd generation was so unwatchable. I think I gave up after 3 episodes, the majority of my friends in school at that time also gave up on the show.
