Love this version. I listen to it constantly throughout the years. It often gives me shivers and can almost bring a tear to my eye, if I'm in a particularly reflective mood. Cheers and thank you for this!
I'm Irisha, and had never heard of this beautiful song until the band which played at my wedding 17yrs ago played it for our first dance- cos I had black hair then. I loved it from the moment I heard it...
Paul Weller's version makes me fall in love.. Paul Caldwell's version makes me fall in gorge/ravine.. This version had me immensely emotional that I even shed tears.. Acoustics, Rhythms, Drums, Bass & the Celtic pipes + vocals & video... This is what happens when a sincere man focuses on one woman & what he gets in return.. (& vice versa) I am out of words to share my acclamation.. Paul Caldwell is a Sincere Artist! Respect!
Most artists I've seen do this song try to make it overly complex, and for me that ruins it. Paul Caldwell does a great version of the song. It is a simple, but beautiful. An aching, melancholy memory of one that has passed, and that's how this song should be done.
First time I've heard this song was in a bar on some island somewhere in time long ago. What was long forgotten has now returned in twice the amount of load it gave back then. Thank you!
Wow 🤩 I came across you and this video by accident. I was looking for cover versions that are pure, deep, fragile.. And found this one. Touched from the first second, pressed the follow button from the second and then just enjoy. 🥰 Your voice is male, experienced, shaped, broken and got up again. for this love Very well done, thank you. I'm looking forward to your other songs.
Heartfelt version - every single artist in this track has played their heart & soul out. I don't know how many times I've listened to this masterpiece. Paul Weller's version has its own way and this one is on another quest.. Regards
So few people find true love........but the love that Jesus has for each of us is beyond measure and makes up for our loss on earth! Whosoever will call upon the name of the Lord shalt be saved!
This is love worth waiting for. To find your soulmate is truly amazing. I have found mine. My life has changed forever. We are one. I searched and searched with no luck. Then when I just let life happen he appeared. It started with a simple hello---- Love you honey
Hello Paul! How are you? Hope you are well! I really like this song and your unique way of singing! I live just near the river Clyde in Scotland. I came here from Ukraine because of war…. And I loved this beautiful land and feel it my native. By the way, you are very handsome! 😉🤗
great Version. thanks . Your history of the song is correct as far as i know. ( so many get it wrong) One thing to add it that is has only become popular in Ireland since Christie Moore sang it. He was taught it by Hamish Imlach - his best version of it is linked on here by someone else. I've never read where he learned it from.
Thank you very much! And yes I heard Christy’s version first! He’s great for bringing these songs to a wide audience! I don’t think I’ve heard the Hamish Imlach version but I’ll have a listen! My favourite version is by Nina Simone. Check that one out!
just another check-in comment for a song - and version - i love. I've taken up the piano since my last check-in, and this song has spurred-on my learning. @PaulCaldwell has quite literally inspired me, and it is THIS version of the song i (try to) play on the keys.
Je vais de découverte en découverte avec cette chanson (que je trouve sublime) mais cette interprétation surpasse pour moi celle de Christy Moore et celle de Gaelic storm qui sont extrêmement belles. Félicitations à Paul et à ses musicos. Merci!
Paul you sang this song brilliantly, first time I heard this song was by Hamish Imlach from Motherwell Scotland , nice one , very powerful , thanks Mitch
Oh my, by all the gods and goddesses this is such a wonderful haunting song. It has really touched me, thank you for your talent and this amazing song. Your emotions in your voice and on your face are breath taking.
Only heard of this song a few weeks ago. I've listened to several versions before I came across this one. This one is tops. You've captured the Celtic haunts and the sounds of the isles. I was literally swept away. But, I did not like the ending. Suicide is cowardice and I don't think his love would have wanted him to cause pain to his family and friends. That's my opinion. But, the song is amazing!
Similar experience, I heard this song on the radio a few months ago for the first time and Ive been trying to find that particular version, but this was really good, passionate, the emotions building, and I’m like you I don’t like the ending, but I don’t think it’s cowardly, it’s just so sad, and there’s good still to do
Damn!⛈ A brilliant, passionate, tragic take on a beautiful song. If I am ever lucky enough to be in the same city as Paul Caldwell when he is performing, I'm there. I will add that I appreciate the great musicianship of the band, as well as the acting.
Just checking-in again so you know this amazing song remains a much-loved part of my favourites list, and is listened to regularly. Wonderful rendition. Is that Jonnie Walker Red Label you're drinking, by the way? Good choice. Much love from Belfast xx C
@@PaulCaldwell1 totally will dude... that's some take on Black is the colour.. where did you ever get that idea. I'm a musician and love that song but would never have thought of that. It's not even the same melody.. works better I think. Cheers 🤘
Cursed in darkness, thank you! it’s kinda based on Christy Moore’s version. But when I was learning it, I went over a few different versions And found Nina Simone’s version. I heard the darkness in it when I read the lyrics the story came out more. The melody came when I started playing it live. Do you have stuff recorded? I’d like a listen.
@@PaulCaldwell1yes I have stuff recorded, a bit more grungy and rock. Just search for Cursed in darkness and look for the reaper head. I haven't really shared my music from that channel. Actually just press the head and a bigger one comes up... press it and you're there... the first one isn't mine and needs to come down. Thanks for the info btw.
Amazing! My sister heard someone playing this song in a pub in Ireland while on her honeymoon (it may have even been your band, I don't know) and she now plays it as part of her acoustic set here in Canada because she loved it so much.
This video made me cry. My love's hair is indeed black, and we are currently separated by an ocean, and financial difficulties, but want so badly to start our lives together. I have only ever heard the Gaelic Storm's version of the song before this one. At first, the melody was haunting, and was beautiful, but seemed sad. At the end, when he jumped...it made me feel how I would feel if I could not get back to My sweet Emie...😪
Your voice has so much character. And the arrangement is so badass. I’ve listened to this 10 times already . This version you are singing is different from the Niles version, it’s simpler and less medieval feeling. It seems to have been picked up in Ireland at some point . Niles in turn claims to have made his version up, which is odd because it is more medieval sounding than the original folk song that sharp collected .
I completely agree, I always thought the song is Scottish by the line that says “I’ll go to the Clyde and I’ll mourn and weep” The Clyde is in Scotland. From the claims that Niles has made, I’ve found a few statements that said he just rearranged it, as in melody. But could never find the actual writer. Thanks for your kind words!
@@PaulCaldwell1 Niles arrangement is pretty but it feels like it needs a B section . It's like half a piece. I tried combining this version with Niles version, but it only half works Would like to see you do other folk songs in similar style !
@@PaulCaldwell1 this song only entered ireland in the 60s when christie moore the irish singer heard the scottish folk singer hamish imlach sing it and asked hamish if he would teach him it. the clyde is indeed in scotland. this is an american rework.....nothing to do with ireland. there are many scottish and english sangs in ireland picked up in the 60s when "irish" music was just starting. you can look up christie moore on you tube and you will hear him tell the story of how hamish taught it to him.
