- This year's Black History Month celebration at the Tiny Desk features a carefully crafted lineup spanning many genres, generations and walks of life. Each artist represents the best in their class and will be performing at the Tiny Desk for the first time.

You can't see it on the screen, but there's a piece of paper taped to the Desk in front of Lee Fields throughout the R&B, blues and soul veteran's long-awaited Tiny Desk debut. It's got the set list, of course, but also an instruction to the singer: "NO AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION!!!!"
It speaks to Fields' legendary showmanship - he's often been dubbed "Little JB" due to his similarities to the hardest-working man in show business - that his team felt a need to rein in his generous impulse to work any crowd before him, knowing the time constraints of a Tiny Desk concert. It speaks further to Fields' showmanship that he ended up ignoring the directive: By the time he got to the set-closing "Two Jobs," which features a call-and-response listing the hours in the day, he was yelling, "I want y'all to count the hours!"
Though pandemic-era protocols limit the size of the Tiny Desk crowds these days, Fields got the shouts of approval (and participation) he was seeking, as he barreled through three songs from last year's Sentimental Fool and one relative oldie from a career that stretches all the way back to the late '60s: the self-explanatorily titled "Ladies," from his 2009 album My World.
SET LIST
"Forever"
"Ladies"
"What Did I Do"
"Two Jobs"

How do you love rap when rap doesn’t love you back? From Rico Nasty’s harassment from toxic Carti fans, to Saucy Santana's unapologetically femme aesthetics in a queerphobic industry, to the assault case that put Megan Thee Stallion’s entire image on trial, each episode of Louder Than A Riot - the second season of our investigative hip-hop podcast - unpacks the unspoken rules of rap that hold the entire culture back. Tap in to our first episode at n.pr/louder-season-2.

This youngster really has a bright future ahead of him, lol. 😂
I dare you to watch this for 30 seconds, and turn it off. Impossible.
Wow. Beautiful.

REAL SOUL SINGER HERE, I've been trying to see him live for a minute
Been a fan of this guy and the Daptone label for years! I LOVE IT knowing the fiery Lee Fields is still going strong! Wish ya well, brother.
Saw him last night in my hometown of Durham. Front row, the whole place was dancing and clapping. Best show i've seen in a long time.
I clicked on this by accident. The absolute BEST accident ever. I had never heard of Lee Fields nor his music before this moment but I am now a fan! This is music!!!
Give his song "You're the Kind of Girl" a listen. This cat is old school and I love it!
also check out his duet with Sharon Jones "Stranded in Your Love"
Hope you can see him life. Was my best experience so far^^ Soul at the best point
You're in for a treat. He's the real deal ❤
@@clownboyremixxit's unreal ❤
Saw “Lee Fields” and immediately liked before I heard a note. How he never became a household name, I’ll never understand.

Saw Lee Fields and The Expressions at Coachella and have been in love with them ever since. Thank you Tiny Desk!!
I discovered Mr Fields in 2013 I believe. He is a National Treasure…. He has made my eyes ball up so many times in those years. I feel like he is talking to ME. ❤❤❤.
I'm so glad that I know of you and your music brother. Your music/songs are from your heart and your soul buddy. Thanks Lee Fields. Your band is one of the best.
Last year my wife and I had the great pleasure of seeing him live! He didn't disappoint. Boy did this set put a smile on my face!
Lee Fields is your favorite soul singers soul singer! Salute!
One of the few remaining true soul singers. I was lucky to see him last year, he is an amazing man !
He didn't fail to disappoint? So.. he was bad? not sure what you mean. lol.
@@kmputertechsupplies2374 My error. It's been corrected. Thanks
Sometimes I dream of being born with a voice like that. Truly... Try to imagine being able to sing so effortlessly, so uniquely. Just beautiful.
And the lyrics, and the band, can't say enough good things about this. Thanks for turning my day on Tiny Desk!
I don't think you mean to, but I wouldn't undersell the artists hard work and sacrifices. I think it sounds natural because they mean it...
Telling by the sweat on his forehead it's not effortless. Nevertheless it's just great!
Glad I'm not the only one! Right outta the shower you start between singing and humming when.... what was that???
discovered Lee Fields while playing Sleeping Dogs, which is a video game with radio stations, and one of those stations was Daptone Radio featuring several songs by Lee Fields and Charles Bradley who immediately became some of my favorite vocalists of all time. got to see Charles in concert before he passed. glad to see that Lee is still going strong.
Man I love me some Charles Bradley! Must've been amazing to see him live
I saw him live a week ago in France ! One of a kind performer and a amazing band... Looking forward to see him live again ! Thanks Lee Fields
I saw them this past December after waiting almost 2 years due to Covid. Just made that night much sweeter. His energy on stage was 🔥
Lee Fields is awesome. Someone ought to speak with UA-cam about strategically placing adds in the middle of songs. I get Google makes a fortune off of showing me adds for medications I don’t need but they could at least time it to not distract from the performance. On a positive note, love Lee’s tailor. That jacket is something!
I consider myself a happy person, but nothing has put a bigger smile on my face lately than this! Thank you NPR! Thank you Lee Fields! Amazing! What a sound!
Seeing him in Brussels in 3 days. ♥
I was there too!
What a legend! So happy to discover his music!!
Update: we went to his concert in the Netherlands last weekend after seeing this tiny desk show, an ecstatic evening I must say, if you have the chance, definitely go and see Lee Fields and his band!!
This is INCREDIBLE. I've loved Lee ever since my wife saw him live on a work trip and called me and said you gotta check this guy out!! This was a good 4 years ago. Love me some Lee Fields. ❤ man and to see him get emotional, you know this is what music is for. Healing and sharing in hurt and love and happiness and all that. ❤❤❤❤
Waking up to this in my notification was a message from the universe " Today is going to a a really good day, enjoy."
This is pure GOLD! Thank you Tini Desk!!!!!!!!!
Saw Lee perform at the Paradiso in Amsterdam last night. What an experience! They don't make 'em like that anymore and I'm beyond grateful that I got to experience Lee and his amazing band. The Expressions are tight!
chills ... I love Lee Fields and the Expressions
I remember Ben, what an amazing guitarist. I remember him playing with Charles Bradley on the Toronto Star video. What a Gem.
Thanks NPR for this concert. SO to Jacob Silver for being the best, I love his smile and I will always always always let him stay in my house in Brazil. Ms. Silvetier must be a lucky lady.
Fabulous, his band are excellent too, very tight and in tune with him, I was lucky enough to see them all play in Brighton last year in a really small venue. They blew the roof off, feel blessed to have been there.
I have ceiling speakers all over my house and boy did this sound good!
Saw this man live 7 years ago on accident, and very quickly realized I had discovered a gem. Extremely happy to see him resurge in such an incredible way!!
Didn’t know him. What a voice, what a band. Thank you as always.
This is my second time watching this, and I'm sure it won't be the last today! This is great. I could listen to "What did I do" on repeat all day!
Lee Fields and this glorious band, I thank them. This was truly a treat. Put a smile on my face.❤❤❤
I love Lee so much. His music just hits my soul like nothing else.
Such a hidden gem. Thank tiny, you did it again.
The way these songs make my heart feel so FULL 🙏🏽💕 I'm forever grateful for this man and his "expressions"! 🥰
One of the best in the world. His voice has nourished me for hundreds of hours.
The king of Soul Revival!! And certainly a fine bluesman too

That bassist is in heaven
Lee Fields making that music straight from heaven's rafters. & the band is dialed in! Always appreciate the sounds.
Great, great performance.
Mr. Lee, keep on rocking.
Showing this music to my nieces and nephews. Trying to keep the scene alive. It's working, so far.
Much love to you.
I consider myself a conissuer of old school music but I was only TODAY years old when I discovered this diamond in the rough. This hybrid of Otis Redding & Charles Bradley. I am so ashamed of myself that it took a trip to Starbuck hearing this melodic voice blaring from the speakers for me to learn of this man
Legend Lee Fields - what a MASSIVE gift to humanity - thank you NPR.
Man. Ladies is a classic frfr
What a beautiful voice ❤
I love this Guy! Wonderful Singer!🤗😍👏🏾💙

This music frames Lee’s beautiful voice perfectly. It would be interesting to hear how Lee would sound with a more contemporary sound

Have seen Lee and his musicians on the 13th of February 2023 in Brussels. I was not in the best time of my life and thanks to them i had a very good time.
HOW HAS IT TAKEN ME THIS LONG... And then I remember... Mac Comes to me EXACTLY WHEN IT'S TIME!!
I never post comments... Expressing such truth. Tears are just flowing...

I’ve had the privilege of seeing Lee live, truly an amazing man!
Looking forward to Barcelona. -A fellow Southern boy
What a wonderful way to start the day! I feel some moisture in my eyes, a lump in my throat and I am feeling fine.
I stumbled upon the song wish you were here over a decade ago and i'm so excited to see lee fields on tiny desk! incredible talent, we're so endlessly lucky he's still sharing that with us.

Wish you were here. It was the first song I ever heard from Lee Fields and the expressions. He's one of a kind!
How is this man 72!? What a fantastic voice, a great band with the sax and trumpet being the icing on the cake.
Thank you for this, I enjoyed it immensely!
I saw him sing live in St. Louis, it was incredible and gave me chills.
Great, great, great! Couldn't get enough. Watched it again.
Sentimental Fool is an amazing album, the best Soul/R&B album in years and the best new LP of 2022. I really wish I could have been there for this. Incredible!
I love Lee fields
Mr Lee Fields, You deserve your flowers, Sir! You are a true living legend. Thank you for sharing your gift.
💐🎶
I’ve been waiting for this like since i knew Lee Fields! Thank You ❤
One of the best songs I've ever heard...ladies
That joint and still lets me down are 2 of his best. Nothing but soul
They are all impressive but The guy on the guitar is doing excellent work!!!
I discovered him last year from a skateboard part and have been listening since. Heard his song in the superbowl commercial the other day. Now here he is in my favorite concert series! smoothest voice i've heard since the long gone soul guys like sam cooke and otis redding
Skate videos are the best for that, discovered so many awesome artists over the year... 🛹
Let me say this. NPR TIny Desk never disappoints. But every year during Black History Month....they REALLY SHOW OUT. Whoever is in the NPR Boardroom is most def Black and in tune with our culture. May everyone reading this be blessed with good health and $3 million dollars.
I need to see him live. ❤
Thank you NPR for this precious gift
Oh my what a treat.
this brings joy to me
Legend!!!
Heard this on the commercial had to rush to UA-cam and find the field. You’re awesome Lee Fields!!!
Simply Incredible ❤
Thank you to all of you guys, my heart is melting
Loved this!
Lee Fields has been a great singer and entertainer for many years. I remember going to a number of his concerts back in the early 90's he had a song called "Meet me Tonight" that was real big for him. It's good to see he's doing well and still performing. Hopefully you all can tour the south soon.
