Hey Curtis! Love your seeds and love supporting your channel. I was wondering if you have a video explaining the difference between everything you have spoken about... GMO seeds, hybrid seeds etc. I am more specifically interested in microgreens.
I have a few Heirlooms I like, but I am finding that hybrids are more disease resistant and often have a faster DTM so I can get something else planted.

Thanks for another great video. I have been trying to plant a fall garden (for selling at market) to make up for a loss in yields because of the hot summer and am having so much trouble getting stuff to come up and come up evenly. I switched to using your technique of bed prepping and seeding. Having trouble with worms eating off the tender sprouts, and have began spraying with BT in hopes to kill them. Due to a lack of rain here I have to hand water, and notice all of the butterflies/moths collecting on the wet soil. Just thought I would share a story.
Three buckets and tote and I don't bother saving seeds either, much easier to buy them each year. Plus I like to try different things. Like this year I tried carrots in my tote but so far they are only an inch long with very lose compost. Next year I'll try green onions in the tote.

Some people also confuse GMO and HYBRID. Nothing wrong with Hybrid... in fact it is often better because some plants have been cross bred to make them more productive, resistant to disease/drought/etc.
...and nothing wrong with GMO either. To give example, tell me why would be having more cellulose in the stem of the corn plant bad for you? Even if you eat it has no effect on you. It however does one thing pretty well, it makes the stem harder, thus certain bugs have a lot harder time attacking the crop. lets also point out that GMO is a precision technology, thus there is no random "bad genes" introduced, while many conventional breeders use artificial means to increase the number of mutations, hence more mutations means that you will have bigger chance to get the genetic makeup (and plant) you want. These include treating plants with, acid, and exposing them to radiation - i think most people would find that just as scary if not more than GMO. At the end of the day, people are uneduacted, and fall foll all kinds of bullshit. I find this pretty similar to how media portrayed radiation, or a few centuries back how electricity was treated as some mysterious force that could get loose, go around killing people raise dead ... etc. after all it makes dead bodies move! Boo!
Seed saving is always worth the time! The plants become climatized to your area and will thrive better the next year... And GMOs have infiltrated more than commercial crops- Arctic Apples and Simplot potatoes are examples.
Isn't there a higher cost of being "certified organic" as well? It also may be difficult to control pollination from other gardens near yours that may introduce GMO pollen.
FYI i wasn't sure were to find seed sellers in Canada for a couple of cover crop options. Winter Rye and Hairy Vetch and so after getting terrible options from google. Seed sellers that cant sell cover crops over the Canadian border for example. I thought hey there should be something like this on Urban Farmer and here it is. Thanks Curtis. PS still looking for a good source of Vetch that doesnt feel really expensive, but im probably just cheap LOL Cheers

I have noticed that too. After a year or two I decided I mostly prefer more common varieties. I get a few of theirs but mostly I went with high mowing this year.
I've ordered a bunch of tomatoes and peppers from them, a lot of them didn't do very well, didn't nearly come out as advertised, or were just weird like the Craig's Grande Jalapeno which grew fine but tasted like a bell pepper.. I do like their Jimmy Nardello pepper seeds and their heirloom lettuce mix. But some of their stuff like their Amish Paste tomato seeds the plants would look awful while all the others around it looked great. I will probably get some more Jimmy Nardello seeds next year but that'll be about it!
I watched a vid of HTME and the sugar beets are way bigger than my suger beets, are my beets GMOd? Also, the stems are red, and the leaves are 10-20 times bigger than the beets.
In another video you said one of your cherry tomato varieties was "sweet baby girl" where do you get these seeds? Are they the "sweetie cherry tomato" from high mowing seeds? This was the closest I could find to that name.
Actually, arugula does not take long and is extremely productive. I produced half a cup of seed from maybe a square metre or less of plants. And they freeze well. But cleaning them took an hour and they aren't perfectly clean, so they might not do well in the Jang seeder, if you use that for arugula, for example.
Unless I'm mistaken, Salanova is just a trademarked name of baby lettuce's from Johnny's. As far as I can tell, it's just their hybrid baby lettuces. There are plenty of other companies offering baby lettuce. Osborne, Fedco, among many others. I personally have opted out of growing Johnny's Salanova because I find their prices to be too high compared to other companies offering varieties like Tango and Merlot, or varieties Red Incised and Multi Green. Is there a difference between Salanova and these other baby lettuces?
Curtis, Anyone who has tried saving seed from their garden should understand that this is not free or easy. It's quite a bit of work and takes lots of time. Thanks for the information. I'd rather buy seeds from a company that is good at producing seeds than to hope that my amateur seed, saved from last year, will germinate well.
Are the tomatoes that you pick green and ripen on the shelf GMO or bred like that? Ugly tomatoes are supposed to be the tastiest but they don't look good on the shelf so you don't see them often.
I think they're just generally hybrids, I grew some hybrid tomatoes for a few years that would come out looking like the grocery store tomatoes, perfect... but they weren't nearly as tasty as most of the heirlooms... To me a real tomato is a nice Cherokee Purple.
I am starting to grow for seed saving this year, but its not something that will improve margins for a market farm. Saving seeds isn't costly per seed, it is costly per variety. It would take a tiny tiny plot to get enough seed to provide all of one variety of lettuce for yourself. But with umteen crops a market farmer grows, the managment effort would become extreme. For me the drive is more based on interest, and living in conditions needful of locally adapted seeds, where the desert meets the Rocky Mountains. If my community had the wealth to control the environment of our grow operations more so, or a milder climate there would be little calling. Even factoing that in, I cannot grow enough of a crop to justify seed saving for myself as a business, instead it is a side hobby and self-education project for the last couple years, and as my plants are breed to the condition I want, there may soon be a business possibility to provide seeds for several farms. With current conditions and seed prices and shipping being as they are at present, there is limited financial motive to save seed. A local seed business might be viable in certain communities with special conditions, especially if it is an economically disadvantaged area, but even in those conditions it is most likely to be a simple side business.

No I don't believe wheat in USA is gmo BUT THE WHEAT IS SPRAYED WITH ROUNDUP PRIOR TO HARVEST- supposedly it dessicates the wheat I think it's to speed up harvest,or at least that's what I've been told.

I like saving seeds because it's fun and connects me more to my garden seeing my plants' children and their children's children grow up every year. But yeah, total waste of time and money if you're trying to maximize time and money.
I am happy to hear that. A friend of mine a couple years ago who owns a large organic wheat field said Monsanto goonies black suits and sunglasses the who nine yards was stalking his farm and coming up the the house. One day they came to the house and threatened to sue if they found Monsanto DNA in his crop...well he answered the door with a rather large shot gun and said if he found Monsanto DNA in his crops he's be suing Monsanto for ruining his million dollar s of organic crops. They turned around and never came back. :)
There is no way he should worry about anything like that (seeing his practices). Like it or not, big evil corporations in GMO exist thanks to fearmongering and idiots. Since the wiseasses managed to effectively ban terminator seeds (aka. seeds from which infertile plants grow) companies who put in years (if not decades) and heavy money for GMO (or breeding) have a lot to fear (again you have a lot of medical trial level testing, even for completely mundane stuff, like corn that develops more cellulose in its stem). If you as a farmer having a property sitting n the side of a GMO field you can breed out (after some generation) the gmo crop, thanks to cross pollination. However that requires a lot of effort - as you need to selectively breed the plants pollinated from the GMO crops of your neighbour.

I love a good salad so I'm gonna try some green romaine, onions, garlic, cucumber, spinach and a tomato here and there. I work for a university in Australia . Our agriculture faculty is creating some great GM plants for the purpose of countering negative conditions proposed as part of climate change and also to create crops to feed developing countries ie drought tolerant or vitamin rich. GM has a very bad name because of one company so trying to get investors for great GM is difficult. I think this should be highlighted otherwise ignorance mat kill our future.
Yes. Monsanto shot themselves and everyone else in the foot when they went around suing farmers for patent infringement from seeds blowing into their fields. Just dirty.
Living in france (cocorico, or whatever place you live in the world), I struggle to find varieties that where once (for centuries) grown in my region. So I buy the seeds full price from an association that tries to keep the varieties humanity left us. I never buy seeds from supermarkets or places like that. Just my small part on keeping the heritage. I'm just a small farmer but everyone has to make it's share. YOU have tho power héhé.

Some crops are easier to save than others. Tomatoes, for example, one or two tomatoes can provide enough seeds for next year.

Do you keep bees or know someone who does to help with pollination?
Pollination has never been an issue for me. I don't keep bee's. I've got enough to do.

When my friend's neighbor planted a large GMO crop it killed every bee in her hives except Australian hive.
I would suspect something other than GMO to have impacted the hives. Mites, SHB and or some type of infection. Or they absconded.
At least you don't have to deal with Monsanto suing you for saving seeds.
Barely anyone does. There's so much fear about that issue. As horrible as it was, it's barely happening anymore.
I am happy to hear that. A friend of mine a couple years ago who owns a large organic wheat field said Monsanto goonies black suits and sunglasses the who nine yards was stalking his farm and coming up the the house. One day they came to the house and threatened to sue if they found Monsanto DNA in his crop...well he answered the door with a rather large shot gun and said if he found Monsanto DNA in his crops he's be suing Monsanto for ruining his million dollar s of organic crops. They turned around and never came back. :)

Like it or not, big evil corporations in GMO exist thanks to fearmongering and idiots.
Since the wiseasses managed to effectively ban terminator seeds (aka. seeds from which infertile plants grow) companies who put in years (if not decades) and heavy money for GMO (or breeding) have a lot to fear (again you have a lot of medical trial level testing, even for completely mundane stuff, like corn that develops more cellulose in its stem).
If you as a farmer having a property sitting n the side of a GMO field you can breed out (after some generation) the gmo crop, thanks to cross pollination.
However that requires a lot of effort - as you need to selectively breed the plants pollinated from the GMO crops of your neighbour.
File that under things that never happened.

#1 reason to not eat GMO: the nutrition profile of the product is sacrificed for greater yields. Repetitive selective breeding is still GMO.

much appreciated, will have to keep this in mind as I receive and germinate them, can't wait! will try to share my results. I love a good salad so I'm gonna try some green romaine, onions, garlic, cucumber, spinach and a tomato here and there. Basil for the live mosquito repellant... and I must have some italian blood in me because I love pasta, so basil will be good there. Cheers, man!

I work for a university in Australia . Our agriculture faculty is creating some great GM plants for the purpose of countering negative conditions proposed as part of climate change and also to create crops to feed developing countries ie drought tolerant or vitamin rich. GM has a very bad name because of one company so trying to get investors for great GM is difficult. I think this should be highlighted otherwise ignorance mat kill our future.

Living in france (cocorico, or whatever place you live in the world), I struggle to find varieties that where once (for centuries) grown in my region. So I buy the seeds full price from an association that tries to keep the varieties humanity left us. I never buy seeds from supermarkets or places like that. Just my small part on keeping the heritage. I'm just a small farmer but everyone has to make it's share. YOU have tho power héhé.
