  • Starting up the Vaughan Flex-Tred for the first time in about seven months. Originally used for cleaning under chicken barns, this unique little tractor was built as a walk behind unit by the Vaughan Motor Company of Portland, Oregon. It was originally painted grey and had a small blade on the front. The engine is a license built 5hp Wisconsin and drives the machine through independent planetary clutches and a single speed transmission all immersed in an oil bath. Vaughan originally marketed these machines to small farms and orchards for use as a universal implement carrier and offered an entire catalogue of different attachments and implements for various light duties. The advent of garden tractors all but sealed the fate of this unique design to the history books. Pioneer Acres Museum, Irricana, Alberta.

    I had one of these many years ago. Mine had roller conveyor chain for tracks and I had one replacement sprocket for a normal track and I had a plow and some other attachments. However , I did not have a magneto so I ran it once using a magnetic red switch (like in a burglar alarm)and used that to trigger a CD ignition system. Timing was determined by where I duct taped a magnet on the flywheel. I passed it on to a friend that I had worked with when I was moving to a location with limited space around 1978. I sent him the link to this video so may hear what has happened to it since. There have been quite a few times that I wished I still had it.

    I remember this little thing at the i
    Irricana pioneer days in 2015. It’s even on my grandfathers memorial card with him sitting on it. I would quite like to come back but that would require me sleeping in a tent or box camper because I would refuse to go there without being his model t in a pull behind trailer. It wouldn’t feel right going to a pioneer days without it, I’ve been going to Beaverlodge’s with it for as much of my childhood and early to mid teens as I can remember.

    Vaughan basically modified a Wisconsin AG/AH for use on their mini endless tread tractors. The ones I have seen have air vane governors, but yours does not. I would rethink how you start this engine. Never wrap your hand completely around the starter handle, and never use it to make a complete rotation. Failure to use a hand crank properly can cause a broken wrist or arm if the engine kicks back. You only need to crank it slowly one quarter rotation, only engaging your palm with the handle. A properly tuned engine will start in less than 5 cranks even if it sits for 10+ years! Very cool tractor, I would love to own one one day. I love the Rumely Oil Pull as well...

    • @Rainhill1829
      @Rainhill1829  10 років тому +8

      Its true it doesn't start well, the carburetor is the incorrect one and the float refuses to stay where we set it, so cold starts are a battle. Once warm, it starts like a dream. Sadly I have to push it through two power strokes to get it to catch, that's why grip the crank that way, I hope I wont have to with the proper carb. Thanks a lot for the data on her history, every little bit helps.

    • @Rainhill1829
      @Rainhill1829  9 років тому +7

      themadmailler Thanks for the kind words. That big crank came from a Cooper Bessemer GMV-6. They where once quite common around here. Giant natural gas fed engines used to pump compressed natural gas through pipelines, you can see the pump eccentric on each of the three crank throws. They came in a number of sizes, this one was a V6, made about 660hp. Most where replaced with jet turbine engines in recent years. I don't know the exact series, but here is a link to a video of an operating GMV-10 version of this engine. Exact same engine only with ten cylinders, pretty cool: ua-cam.com/video/f-UiGx2sepk/v-deo.html

      You and I would have totally gotten along as siblings - unless our parents only bought ONE of these tractors and made us SHARE it...

    You should mount a plow to the front.. something very heavy duty. Also.. get a nice KnN air filter.. and maybe some matching paint and go crazy with it

      Sadly, few have survived. If you ever see one grab it even if it's in bad shape.

    Over at the troy pipeline yard in Houston they have one a bit bigger. Its one of those that they use to lay pipe with. I didn't think it would be real i guess it must be

    When I was at the ponderosa ranch at Lake Tahoe, I saw these things sitting on the mountain and I still don’t know what they’re used for. I figured it was maybe used to haul camera equipment or something? Don’t know

    Might need to upgrade the knuder valve on the flutter blast attachment to get it to start easier.
