- WILL IT START!? 1950s Caterpillar Dozer BARN FIND!
There has been a 1950's Caterpillar D6 cable dozer tucked back in the barn for YEARs and today we give it some attention to see if we can get not one, but TWO engines going. The pony motor needs to start so we can get this piece of American Engineering up and running and hopefully some day soon - push some dirt with it!

A couple more points on the benefit of a pony motor. You correctly said that it heats the inlet manifold with the exhaust, but that is just to help the engine to fire in the cold. The pony also shares the water with the main engine so it will heat the main block after a time. The pony can have a two speed gear and the low gear can be used when the block is so cold that the oil is too thick for normal starting, perhaps in the Arctic. When warm then change to high gear.
The other very important thing is that these main engines should only start when full oil pressure is reached after it has been turning over for some time on decompression. This is why they last so long when treated correctly!
Awesome comment thanks!
I also loved Ben's reaction when the diesel started. His face looked like a kids in a candy store!!!!😂
I was. A big kid!
Priceless
Everyone should be lucky enough to have a “Steve” for a friend.
Very true
Haha, love the laughing while trying to hold back your lunch. So funny, been there buddy!
That D6 is awesome cool.
Thanks Boe!
Great times! I ran a D~7 (3T) back in the early 80s . A couple of pointers. Try not to ride the steering brake until the steering clutch is engaged. The cable blade has no down pressure, so you might want to start off using the blade in some loose or soft material ,try not to get slack in the cable as it will snap the cable.it definitely takes some getting used to. Originally those tractors did not have ROPS,imagine operating that dozier 10hrs aday every day! And NEVER PUT YOURSELF Between the track and frame.I enjoyed the video, hope this helps.
The cable is going to take some time to get used to. I hope I don’t snap it
Great to have a knowledgeable friend like Steve.
Very much so!
The expression on your face was priceless when you got it started. The fruits of your efforts will result in a lot of joy running this old iron!!
Thanks! We just need to put it in the dirt now!
I always enjoy these old dozer videos!
More to come!
Love to see these old giants come back to life. If they could only talk, the stories they could tell. Awesome video!!🤜🤛
Loved the dry heaving!!! I laughed my (bleep) off. Great video!
Like a couple of kids with a new toy! Good on you boys. Have fun!
Nothing like working alongside an experienced person who helps bring something like this CAT back to life!
Excellent video Sir!
God Bless
😎
Thank you very much!
Ben I really enjoyed watching you and Steve working on this Dozer to get it running again. To see the joy and sense of pride you both have is well worth watching from start to finish . Thanks again.
Thanks for watching and the comment Kevin!
When I was younger, I ran a Cat D69U with a Pony Moyer to start the Diesel and it was the best time of my life from starting it and operating it
I hope to have this thing in the dirt soon!
That was nice of Steve to help you get it going, he seemed to really enjoy it also. Good to see a young guy get some old iron rolling. Used to drive one of those when it was -30 with what they call an Heater Houser that would contain the hot air off the engine and blow back towards you to help keep you from freezing. It was by no means warm but at least you didn't turn into a popsicle.
What were you doing on one at -30
@@iowANFarmer Moving snow on mountain roads for logging. Back in the days this country had a logging industry. Thanks to the tree huggers we no longer have that and lost all control of being able to control some of these wild fires. Because the fuel load had built up so heavy. When we logged, we controlled the fuel load by harvesting trees and kept our forests much healthier than they are today!
I remember on the farm we had a heater houser on our tractor when we were picking corn; When I was driving into the wind I was fairly warm, but when I got to the end of the row and headed back the other direction with the wind to my back, I froze!
Y'all take care of that old girl, I love to watch people rescuing old iron
Awesome. Machine appears to be in overall excellent condition. What a great find. Good for you for bringing her back to life!!!!
I'm 73 and so I saw the worldwide oil conspiracy . It went from mainly gas station owner leasee's to corp. owned stations and foreign money takers . Gasoline went from .28 cents a gal. .36 . A huge jump in '73 !!! Gas rangeed from 85 oct. to 101 with chevron's " white pump " custom supreme !!! Leaded gas !!! Our whole world changed forever 😢
I feel your pain with the mice. It's rare to find a machine as complete as this one and in such nice condition. Steve is a handy friend to have. Thanks for the video.
When I was a kid my job early in the morning was to start the dozers to prepare for the day's work building roads. The d6 did finishing work and chokered out the logs and the d7 prepared the ground pushing out the big rocks and tree stumps. The d7 was a much harsher ride bucking over big rocks and such but as easy as the 6 to start.
Hello! Good luck with that oldie...
Great to see old iron saved from the scrap yard.keep up the great videos
👍👍 I’ll do my best!
That was so awesome to see that old Cat get fired up. The joy on your and Steves face was great to see.
We enjoyed bringing the video to you guys.
I love how Steve describes parts and processes.
Steve is a great teacher - I’ve learned a lot from him.
Very impressive! Thanks for bringing is along for a first start video.
👍👍👍 thanks for watching- glad you enjoyed it.
a lot of books interesting to learn about specifications, using...great restart, glad to use it
Awesome!!!!
👍👍👍
I absolutely love old dozers, what’s even better is seeing one of my favorite creators make an old dozer video. That thing must have been pretty well taken care of. You even had my stomach rolling when you pulled that filter cap off 🤣. Great video man! Can’t wait to see that ole girl grunt!
Time to put it in the dirt! Thanks for the support 👍👍👍
Love seeing old equipment come back to life
It was a fun time! Thanks for watching Bob!
Steve is one hell of a really nice guy . You are lucky you found Steve that had the know how knowledge of how to work on the engine. Congrats on getting it going . Knowledge is power .
Steve is a great teacher!
This bring back some great memories of my granddad. He owned one exactly like this one along with a couple of 7's and an 8.
I logged many hours on his old 6 building ponds and raking cleared timber as a teenager.
Thank you for the video.
Great comment, thank you!
I love old machines myself and have several. I'd love to find an old Cat dozer as nice as that sleeping in a shed somewhere. Great video. I love your enthusiasm!
Now it’s time to put this one to work!
Brings back memories I drove lowbed years ago and got to move 2 old D 7's they were fun after you get them started.
Learning to start them is a Challenge sometimes
The look on your face when that thing fired up was priceless. That was really cool. Thanks to Steve. Awesome stuff..
Thanks for watching Mike!
Always exciting to get a piece of old iron that’s been sitting for years moving again! You were having way too much fun driving it around….excellent video!
Now it’s time to put it in the dirt!
That's a cool ole dozer. Like the way that old cat sounds.
Watching this reminded me of getting an old D8 2U back up and running not many years back. I knew people over by Allerton that had one. Many fun weekends of learning about dozers.
Very cool. Do you know what makes them a 2U?
Don’t know which one of you guys was more tickled, Steve or Ben. 🤣 It was cool to see an old machine come to life, and Steve is a treasure, I know I’ve learned a lot and am still learning from my elders like Steve. Great video!
Steve is a great teacher!
Glad to see you got it running and back into operation! I had to comment, because of the signs on the machine. My dad, George Fertig, was the superintendent for Christensen Bros 60s thru late 90s. Working for him back in the early 80s, my first machine I learned how to operate was a D6 like this one. Awesome video, thanks for posting it!
Maybe it was this one?
@@iowANFarmer This one looks to be in better shape. There was no cage on the one I operated, and the pony required a pull rope. It put a smile on my face as well, first time I got it started up. 🙂
Steve is the Man .. he could repair the CAT blind folded, and operate too.. a great video, from over here 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Good going Ben please keep it running you have a piece of history congratulations sir
👍👍👍 it’s something cool.
the old 9U cat D6 were the nicest dozer to drive .the seat..was like a big armchair and track width and low gravity made them exceedingly stable .on steep ground loved the old girls clearing scrub ..when i was a young fellow the sound of that engine brought back great memories
Dogs and help are the best.
Killdozer Jr.
Love his dads movie.
Just love all early diesel, 40's-50's etc. They are all very simple, again thank you for sharing .Gerald, NZ.
Steve is the jewel of the project. The old Cat dozers r neat !
Couldn’t have done it without him and I always enjoyed learning from experience
Love the pony motor cable blade dozers
GOODTIMES, My Pa brought his Post War CAT D4 in 60’s shipped from USA, he used pull trees n with no hydraulics it would pull Massey Sunshine 500 with non spring tines seeder (wheels use to wood spoke rubber sole converted full tractor tyres). Last time this combo was used in 93, been wet sowing season. I was lucky been only grandson to operate D4, at tractor pull. Great name Barn CAT👍my tip keep eye on track tension, they will get lose. When Pa past away, his wish was buried with CAT hat, he love CAT.
That’s an awesome comment! Thanks for sharing!
Ben, Thanks for the video! Brought back good memories for me. Liked how Steve had to explain the magneto/regulator concept to you. 😀
He’s a great teacher!
Watching from DsM; loving this. I'm 68 and have run these. In fact I also ran trucks with oil bath air cleaners. Careful not to stretch the cables.
Wouldn’t know if I was or not!
Great Job iowANFarmer and Ben on getting the 50est cat dozer running good. sounds great..
Grew up in Iowa… I really miss it…
Crying from laughing so hard….
Great to see “barn cat” coming back to life !!!
Glad you enjoyed it! 👍👍
Great video. I've been running equipment for nearly 30 years. In 2005 I was employed by a company that had a 1957 D7 Cat . It had a pony motor and cables. Running it was quite an experience after being on much newer equipment.
Did you get used to running it?
@@iowANFarmer It took a while but I got the hang of it. Running one will give you a lot of respect for the old timers. I like the older iron because it has its own personality.
@@frankward423 you will probably feel like you put in some work at the end of the day running that.
Great video! That old 9U D6 looks to be in decent shape. I have one like it with hyd angle dozer on it,cleared 700 acres of bush up here with it and yup sometimes at 30 below, still have it and it still runs good but not as good of shape as that one, good luck with it !
The hyd angle has to be mighty handy.
Very cool. Thanks!
👍👍👍👍
Ben you are like a kid with a new toy . When the engine started your smile said it all . A note you may think of doing when it is going to sit for a week or longer you may want to shut off the gas on the pony motor and let it run the carb dry then shut the mag off . some times leaving gas in carb for long times they can gum up . have fun !
I’m turning the gas off every time. I think that’s best for it. 👍👍👍
Thats a nice old cat hope it works good for you . it would be fun to watch Andrew on that his first time ! have a great day Mr. and Mrs. iowANFarmer !
@@mikemccloney5640 good idea
Pretty cool. One of your funniest videos especially when you opened the air cleaner. The first dozer I ran was an old cable D9 one thing to keep in mind is when lifting the blade be careful not to lift to high because if you put to much pressure on the blade stops you can break the cable. Great job and have fun.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for the tip. Didn’t know about the blade stops and that could happen.
They call that double blocking. It can mess your day up!
Love the ol' D318 ... You can keep the mice.
BARN CAT fantastic name for a Top Cat. Top Cat was a cartoon character (Boss Cat in UK) and he was cool as hell. 👍
🤟😁🤟Rocking it with BARN CAT
Thanks, I’ll keep the name!
Old gal sounds fairly good, motor isn't crackling or making uncharacteristic noises and no excess white, blue or black smoke, I've seen worse undercarriage plus steering clutches, brakes, and cable blade system working awesome video fellows u have a solid keeper in that old D6,l ran a real old D8 when I was a young buck ,the pup was buggered so I'd have a big front end loader push me backwards while lifting the blade slightly, that big Cat motor would fire right up every time (engine was rebuilt so fairly tight)The power steering on it was excellent lol,Cheers gentlemen, thanks
Great job Ben we had a Loader that had a pony motor then converted it to Electric Start!
It’s starts really good on the pony Motor
Now you got to find an old cable pan and you have a real nice set up there to build your Terraces
I was thinking about that. But really a hydro pan is much more attractive to me.
One thing is you could really pick one up cheap scrap iron price
Congratulations Ben and Steve getting the old dozer moving. Great job. Loved watching this video.
👍👍👍 Glad you enjoyed it!
@@iowANFarmer Yes! it was Christmas in August. The joy on your face had me smiling from ear to ear.
Cat looks like its in excellent shape for it age, shelter really helps!
Sure does!
Awesome video ! Thanks !
Classic dozer !!
Nice dozer, grateful to see this video. As a heavy equipment operator in the USAF 3201st Civil Engineering Squadron I had the pleasure of operating an old gal very similar to yours. 71'-76'
Very cool! Thanks for watching!
That was a great video! I have two old dozers that were given to me. With the help of a friend I was able to get them both running. I use them here on the farm and have been for the past 15 years. Keep up the good content.
👍👍👍 what kind of Dozers?
@@iowANFarmer a Massey Ferguson and a Oliver
Like these videos, grew up around this old equipment 😊👍👍
I think it's great to see this old iron put back to work. Good work gentlemen.
Thanks Jeff!
Great video. I am a part time farmer in Iowa that has designed dozers for 25 years at my day job. Would love to see videos of a cable dozer pushing dirt. Thanks for posting this.
I hope to get some made this fall!
My father drove one most his life good to see it come back to life
Time to put it to work
The dam grin you had beat the hell out of Chester the cat. Very nice to see the old iron back up and running
Now time to put it in the dirt!
@@iowANFarmer hell yes. It almost wants to make me make the father in law get his Clark aire dozer out. Fits on a 4x8 piece of plywood and was used to make landing fields during the war. He got it in buckets and it made one hell of a winter project.
@@billwestphal1421 now that sounds cool
I was smiling along with you bud. Super cool.
Good we could provide a 😄
Thank you for filming and posting this. I'm heading out to a friend's farm this weekend to try to revive a 1950's D6 8U which should be identical in the engine and starting. It was good to watch all the steps you guys went through thank you!
How did it go?
@@iowANFarmer literally just arrived on site! Haven't had a close look yet, but I see that it's a cable blade just like yours!
@@iowANFarmer ok inspection done. Bottom line is that while she's old and rusty everything is there, the exhaust had a can over it to keep the water out, all the control move freely, and the undercarriage looks good, not looking worn.
Engine has oil. Couldn't check the radiator as didn't have tools to get the cap off. Crank turns when the compression is off and won't turn when it's on.
I think it's worth spending a day with some tools and some help to see if I can get it running.
Your machine looks much nicer and has been better treated! But this old girl would come up ok with a bit of effort I think.
Great video, I worked on JD construction equip back in the late 70's, also got to work on Cats, IH and some old Allis construction equip.
Ever work on one of these?
@@iowANFarmer No but with the operators manual and a parts manual it shouldn't be too hard, I live by Winterset
Good job! Love seeing old iron working, don’t forget to check the oil in the final drives….
I’ll maybe do a video on servicing it.
Ran a 1947 and a 1953 D7 for years. Man that D6 brings back a lot of memories!👍
Hopefully good memories!
We cleared a lot of woods. If you don’t set the clutch just right for the cable blade lift, you can snap the cable pretty easy. That’s my only bad memory.
@@steveminnich9864 I’ll have to look at that a little closer
Nice Job. Starts well. Usually leave the diesel throttle off till been on compression for a while. Probably okay in warm weather, in cold, have to turn the big engine over for quite a while to get the block warmed up enough, before giving it fuel.
Peoples have been really helpful with little tid bits like that. Thanks!
Assume to see history come back to life GOOD VIDEO 👍
Thanks Earl! We enjoyed it.
I really enjoyed this. Dirt Perfect just bought one similar with pony motor. I enjoyed watching your face light up with that grin when you got the dozer moving. I am anxious to see some dirt moved now. Wished I lived near you just to see it in operation. Thanks so much for the channel
You’ll have to tell DP we got one!
Thank Steve TOO !
That dozer looks to be in great shape
Under roof helped!
The laughing when the dozer fired up was awesome Ben! Wonder how many lives are left on that Old Cat? Still catching mice though. Steve was a great guy helping you out, such a wealth of mechanical knowledge too. Little T.L.C. and it will be working for you.
That’s my hope! I hope to get it in the dirt some day soon! Couldn’t have done the project without Steve!
That laugh & a huge smile on Ben’s face was so endearing, it choked me up. Like a toddler on Christmas morning.
@@chrissyfrancis8952 so right about that! So excited for it to run.
great video guys. watching these old machines come back to life just proves that Americans built the best equipment.
Can wait to push some dirt with it .
Great video! Always good to see what is going on in Iowa...
Always is! Thanks Gator Guy!
That is the first diesel "motor" I have seen. I have seen hundreds of diesel "engines" but that is the first diesel "motor" I have run across.
What a great smile when it started!
Great find on the D6!!!
I think so too!
Nice tractor and a happy 👦
Your lucky to have a old timer that could help you out! that was so funny when opened the oil filter and got a smell LOL
A very nice find for you and with some maintenance here and there it should last for many years and do lots of work on the farm.
Steve is a great teacher - I’ve learned a lot from him.
As a CAT employee for 25 years, this vid put a smile on my face... and the best part was the "mouse clean-out" .. funny stuff..
That reaction was the funniest thing i've seen in a long time. Those mice unknowingly plunged to their doom.....
Wonderful video. Brings back wonderful memories. Good job.
Glad you enjoyed it
We’ll done guy’s
Great job👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻that Cat is running beautiful!!
Thanks Christoph 👍👍👍
FOR SAFETY ON YOUR CATERPILLAR. Always before you get off of it make sure it is in neutral and pull or engage the clutch. When I was 11 I just about died when I started it because it was in gear. I threw the decompression switch and it started and engaged the clutch and I went for a ride.
Yikes!
Fantastic job getting that old beast going again guys, could almost smell those mice from Michigan! 😂 You’ll have a lot of fun with that when you get some time to play after harvest. Again, nice job! Thumbs up to Steve for helping out! 👍
Time to put it to work!
Great video. I had to laugh when you gagged from the pickled mice smell, but there was Steve cleaning the filter bowl you kept on gagging. Lol.
It was funny to me as well!
@@iowANFarmer it was a classic video
On the D6 9u I had, there was a second set of air filter screen up in the top half of the housing also. Had some wing nuts to drop them out the bottom of the housing where the oil bath area you were servicing is.
This one has a newer breather on top it looks like
Mine had the same dust separator bowl on top. The 2nd set of screens would be just above the oil resivoir , access from the bottom inside of the air cleaner housing, when the oil bowl is removed.
Great video, Steve’s a handy guy to have along! Think you’ve got a great machine there, more D6 videos please!
Too cool. Love seeing old iron moving
Me too! Thanks for watching!
This is awesome still got mine that dad bought when I was 5
Awesome machine 👍
