The turn just after this clip ends, where Yana turns around and all the warmth is gone and all that's left in his eyes is pure malevolence... just outstanding. Easily the best reveal of the character ever. Jacobi is absolutely masterful.
Valeyard... when are you going to come into existence? I have been waiting for over thirty years since Trial of a Timelord. Seems like the new wave creators fucked up your timeline beyond all recognition.
Derek Jacobi is a masterful actor. One moment he's a sweet old man, and the next he's the Doctor's bitterest rival. Oh what we could have had with him as the Master for more than just the end of this episode 😊
Honestly, Big Finish did a bunch of audio stories with Derek Jacobi’s master as the main character and I cannot recommend them enough. If you think his master was amazing in this brief moment you will not believe what he can do with a whole season. His Incarnation is known as the war master and is very possibly the deadliest and most effective incarnation the master has ever had, straight up winning even against the doctor multiple times.

The fact this still gives me goosebumps 13 YEARS LATER is a testament to the extremely talented and passionate cast and crew of Doctor Who back then. Masterful.

Notice how much The Doctor is freaking out here, you’d think he’d be ecstatic at the prospect of not being the last Timelord and initially he is but deep down he knows that there is only one other Timelord aside from him that could’ve survived the Time War and it’s the one that he fears the most (aside from himself of course).
I remember how shocked I was when they first aired this. I heard Anthony Ainley's laugh and just couldn't believe it. The whole thing was fantastic and Derek Jacobi absolutely nailed the portrayal of The Master in such a short time. Fantastic!
*This scene is one of my favourites.* With the impeccable acting it has, it brilliantly brings us Martha and Jack's excitement, the Doctor and Chantho's fear, and Yana's curiousity until we know the dangers he will soon pose. In addition, it very slightly hints at Jack's past and future with his reaction at Martha's mention of "The Face of Bo". Then there's the music, that not only foreshadows the dangerous climax of the episode, but also the Master's whole agenda for the next series. Speaking of the Master, we also have a few nicely put lines from the classic Masters that heavily hints at (or even confirms) Yana's true identity for those who have watched Classic Doctor Who. It gives us a good introduction to the Master and how he used to be before he regenerates and changes into a version that more closely resembles the overall Master for New Who. The only problem I might have with this scene, is the lack of more Jacobi. He played both Professor Yana and the Master so incredibly well that it is hard to accept the fact that he got killed off so quickly. While it works perfectly with the plot, and while it's a good introduction to the Master for new viewers, it's also a bit disappointing that we don't get to see more of Derek Jacobi's visual acting, and it could potentially give a bit false hope to an old viewer who would rather have a Master more like the old ones rather than the John Simm we got (who played the Master really well too). This isn't even a criticism of the scene, it's just me wishing Derek Jacobi could have been the Master more, which I know wouldn't have made it as good plotwise. Also, it's kind of funny to be able to say that one of New Who's best Masters was only the Master for 5 minutes. Overall, I just want to say that I wish they could do more like this scene for the show.
How amazing it would have been if the Timeless Child was The Master. It would have made so much sense. The torture until insanity, the helplessness, the abandonment. So, so much sense.

His biggest fear is that the Doctor would change him. But if the Doctor was already part of him? That would wreck him. Also explains how in hell the Master seems to keep regenerating. Edit: I wouldn’t be surprised if the Doctor had a cycle that the Time Lords erased. We never did see the Second Doctor regenerate. So the Time Lords take the 2nd Doctor, makes him regenerate to serve the empire. That’s where the Ruth Doctor and Morbius come in. And when the Time Lords are done? Send him back to exile as the 3rd Doctor and give him enough regenerations to get to the rest of the cycle. It’s convoluted but so is rewriting all of Doctor Who canon and making the entire death arc of the 11th Doctor more moo than a cow’s opinion.

It's ashame they didn't notice the goof of martha mentioning the face of boe in front of jack. They could have played it into the script. I slight eyebrow raise from Jack here and sly wink in ep13 at the reveal, could have been a nice thing to notice on a rewatch.
I noticed that the Doctor’s pocket watch is silver and the Master’s is gold. Does this mean The Rani’s watch would be bronze and Romana’s is platinum, I wonder? 🤔
One of Doctor Who's GREATEST TWISTS. At the time I thought this was an average standalone episode since the finales usually ended with 2 parters. Once I found out this was the Master I FLIPPED OUT. What a way to reintroduce an old Villain in a modern way respectfully to those who played him before as the legacy of the Master was protected in the hands of RTD and Moffat with some New Who Time War lore behind it! FANTASTIC EPISODE!!!!
The more stories we get of Derek Jacobi as the War Master from Big Finish, the more I want to see the final story of the Master using the chameleon arch to turn into Professor Yana...

Those few seconds after he opened the watch, I don’t think I’ve ever seen better acting in Doctor Who. Derek Jacobi was absolutely terrifying. I wish he had stayed as The Master instead of regenerating into John Simm. I think that sort of character is better off being played by an older actor tbh
What is called the song in between 3:30 and 3:36? I can't seem to find it! Although it keeps playing in a lower volume after that, at this moment it is more prevailing
Exactly, for me to be able enjoy these twists and understand them the logic behind them needs to be set up series or episodes prior which is what rtd did perfectly
Imagine if The Master, instead of regenerating, stayed like that and we got the three-parter with Jacobi. Then, afterwards, when he ewe resurrected, he regenerated to fight against the anti-revival potion, ending up absorbing the stuff, giving him all those abilities he got due to it. Or maybe he's overflowing with energy, causing him to have all those abilities.

i wonder how many old time fans recongzie the drum beats/Master quotes.
When I first watched this episode and when it got to this point I had no idea who was the Master
The music to this
As much as I love this moment, Yana turning out to be an acronym for "You Are Not Alone" was such over the top convolution.
Why? It’s a nice touch
@@jordanp989 Because it's purely for the audience. What was the point?
@@Cyberleader672 it’s a fun bit of writing for a sci fi show it’s truly not that deep
@@jordanp989 No one's arguing it was deep
@@Cyberleader672 it’s a phrase. In which there’s no confusion to be had. It was a bit of fun.
I remember this episode coming onto tv and people were thinking it was a throwaway episode before the John Simm two part finale.
Ok yesterday I searched this scene on UA-cam because I love it I saw this video And today I realize that this video was probably posted a few hours before I was looking for it
What a coincidence
(sorry for my English, I'm an humble French fan of the doctor)
That moment when the innocent eyes gaze turns to pure malicious evil is just chilling
It's ashame they didn't notice the goof of martha mentioning the face of boe in front of jack. They could have played it into the script. I slight eyebrow raise from Jack here and sly wink in ep13 at the reveal, could have been a nice thing to notice on a rewatch.
_Best Master!_
I noticed that the Doctor’s pocket watch is silver and the Master’s is gold. Does this mean The Rani’s watch would be bronze and Romana’s is platinum, I wonder? 🤔
I think it's more so the lighting of the room making it look gold
I need more of Derek Jacobi’s Master in my life. He’s so awesome.
Big Finish is your friend.
@@Ravenite456 I wish Apple Music had an audiobook function.😅
@@ssineedausername you can just use the Big Finish app
@@EditedAF987 Does it cost money for each book, or is it subscription based like Apple Music?
@@ssineedausername each individual story and boxset is sold separately, there are bundles but no subscriptions I’m afraid
Calm down, kid
@@LordTalax ite bet
Derek Jacobi is one of our very finest English actors...
Best reveal of the whole of new who in my opinion
The more stories we get of Derek Jacobi as the War Master from Big Finish, the more I want to see the final story of the Master using the chameleon arch to turn into Professor Yana...
He used the chameleon arch at the end of The Heavenly Paradigm.
@@jellybabiesarecool4657 Thanks. I have yet to explore the Big Finish stories myself.
Are they telling us the Master is returning on New Year's Day...?
Just an episodes rerun in order (converted to HD), although he could be?
The day after, actually. Almost all of them, in fact.
@@DoctorDodge We need a break from the master. I'm tired of him showing up every episode, WHERE ARE THE SILENCE?!
@@dylanrinker6831 there is no use for the silence anymore. The only role they played were to kill the 11th doctor before he could let the time lords come back into the universe. They're not even evil creatures. They're walking confession booths.
@@dylanrinker6831 The real twist? They've been in every episode - we just haven't remembered them this time!!!
Captain Jack caused "The year that never was"
Am I the only one that noticed that 03:33 and 03:37 they've added in sound effects for when the master opens the watch? Those weren't in there in the original broadcast, just watched the version on BBC iplayer.
Edit: the BBC iPlayer version has this in, someone try the Netflix version or dvd, you'll notice they're not there
Yep, they also added more intense sounding effects to his regeneration too, I'm not sure how I feel about them to be honest, can't tell whether they add to the intensity or dilute it somewhat
Just think, if Martha didn't act like that Professor Yana wouldn't have opened the watch.
First time watching doctor who and seeing this episode hearing hime say.
"I am the Master"
My response was.
"who?"
But I figured hearing the old clips that it must be an old villain returning.
That Time Lord watch looks cool.
Derek Jacobi only played the Master onscreen for less than five minutes.
For how smart Martha was, she should of been like, can I go show the Doctor that, he likes things like that.
Barring perhaps the reveal of the Daleks in The Stolen Earth and the reveal of the Master in Spyfall, I don’t think anything in Who has ever filled me with so much dread as this scene
Derek Jacobi is one of the best masters (and John simm,Michelle Gomez, roger delgado,Anthony ainley)
I like it better when The Master is evil.
2:34 *OI. Back off my Martha.*
I've only just noticed the sound of the controls The Doctor is using make the sound of 2 hearts (the 4 beats).
"I....am....the....MASTER"
Ah memories of 2007... good times. Regeneration inbound...
Fantastic episode
Here this Timelord
You
Are
Not
Alone
Good old times...
I loved this reveal, it was truly unexpected and totally brilliant. So different to the lousy retcon to shock tactics of today's Who.
You left out the best part!
