There is a new Dizzy game in the works, or so I just read. I was looking it up to what I can find, I really like old games, like especially old PC games. There's so much good stuff that people miss out on. And barely anyone gives a crap when i try to recommend them, the only people I meet that are cool enough to appreciate them, are all online randomly spaced out around the world.

This is the kind of video which is what retro gaming history is all about. The Oliver's are icons of the British gaming lore, and this is such a homage to them. Dan, I was ready to call you out on your facts, but the research for this episode went above and beyond perfection and into the realms of immortality. Quick story. I bought Dizzy 3 and was struggling so I rang the help line. But the tape was on a loop, so I had to wait for it to loop all the way back, and to the point where I was stuck. Later I got stuck again, and this time I played the whole tape, thinking I could memorise the whole thing. I didnt. I went back and played the whole tape again. This time I wrote everything down. Long story short, the phone bill cost me £70; which I paid back over the next 10 years. Thats the most expensive budget game I ever bought. £73.99 in total.

Thanks for putting this video together, Slopes! I’m 33 and from the US. Fantastic Dizzy is a game that my mom used to play with me and my sister when we were kids. This game/franchise is so important to me and my childhood. My mom died of cancer when I was still a kid and playing this game with her created a core memory that gets me through tough times. I was very interested in this video and appreciate all the hard work it took to put this awesome video together. Thank you! 🥚
Seems like you have a lot of respect for the franchise. I am one of those rare Americans who knows about the character. I actually owned Fantastic Dizzy on the genesis and loved it though I never could get past a certain part. Seemed like nobody ever knew what game I Iwas talking about. Edit : Dizzy for Smash.
As a past and current retro gamer from the U.S., i didnt know much about dizzy. but what a treat to dive into these old uk gems. Thank you slope for showing me dizzy so i could experience these games.
The music in Fantastic Dizzy for the mega drive is possibly the best music in ANY game ever made. Every time I hear it I'm instantly transported to xmas '93 when i 1st played it. LOVE that game.
I know what you mean! It's really nostalgic for me as well, I even went through the trouble of beating the game a few years ago just to capture the music directly from the Mega Drive. What a gem that game is!
Huge Dizzy fan from the US here since I was a little kid and first played Treasure Island Dizzy on Quattro Adventure on a rental. A few years later I found the Dizzy standalone game (I can't remember the name now) at a local swap meet and had the only other gold cartridge in my collection outside of the Zelda games. Was cool to later find out how many Dizzy games there actually were with emulation.
Thanks for this video! So many childhood memories playing Dizzy in the 80's and early 90's on my Commodore 64 and Amiga. I spent many hours with Fast Food Dizzy and jumping on that shark fin in Magicland Dizzy gave me nightmares as a kid! Probably my favourite complete history though I enjoy most of the videos. Great work!!!
Drop Dead Fred was on TV in the US a lot back in the early 90s and introduced me to Rik Mayall. So when Comedy Central started airing a show that he was in, I watched it. And that's how a yank learned what The Young Ones was. Plus they had an episode where Motorhead played Ace of Spades. I couldn't pass that up.
I'm a half-Brit that grew up outside of the UK, but I watched The Young Ones religiously as a kid. I think we had everything on VHS, and I even showed part of an episode at school when my English teacher badgered me into bringing "something British" to class - needless to say, it was shut off after a few minutes because no one could understand it. Also, Rik Mayall died far, far too soon. Great video, Daniel!
One of the nice things about the modern era. Steam and GoG lets people self-publish. Yeah, there are problems. But a driven, self-motivated person can create a game a sell it. (Not for a lot, but still some) A small studio can become quite good. Klie (Oxygen Not Included, etc.), Concerned Ape with Stardew Valley, and a couple other small devs.
@@pferreira1983 Quite right. I don't blame Americans of course but most of them have a _huge_ chunk missing from their knowledge of retro gaming history due to their lack of exposure to European micros.
@@sheilaburrowes9081 The issue I have is that the American UA-camrs are the loudest voices in teaching retro gaming history. There's millions of games not experienced by US gamers that have been released.
Thank you for this one! Always love your complete histories and remember when I first discovered your channel asking about a Dizzy one. Fond memories of these on the Amstrad! Don't often comment but always watch. Only made one request before and that was for Dizzy. So after watching this I'm going to put out another request I'd love to see. U.N. Squadron! My all time favourite shmup with an absolute belter of a soundtrack which I have many remixes of, not to mention all my tee's of the franchise! :D I've actually never played the arcade game which is shocking for me. Code Masters had some really great games. Fantastic Dizzy, Ultimate Stuntman, Micro Machines, Big Nose the Caveman, Super Robin Hood. Boy, did they have phenomenal music and gameplay.
Dizzy was very much my first experience of a mascot game before Sonic, only ever completed one Dizzy game - Magicland Dizzy - but kept trying on each game I played to try and improve. It's sad to hear how badly the twins were treated by greedy publishers who only cared about making a profit instead of supporting quality games and a pair of clearly very talented developers. Dizzy is very much one of the pinnacles of British gaming to this day.
Dizzy, the acid trip of a Sega Genesis rental that I had to convince myself actually happened. Although I only had the game for a weekend, this Codemasters classic stuck with me for life. None of my friends have ever mentioned the game so I'm probably one of the few American fans.
To this day, Magic land Dizzy is my favourite game of all time. The music was great and the puzzles for a kid of about 6-7 were challenging but fun enough to keep it entertaining. I had the entire Dizzy series and other than spellbound which I felt was far too long and frustrating with the wind tunnel and rocks, every game was great.
Well being an American I've heard about you hyping this for sometime and thought "what the hell is he talking about?" But it was indeed worth the hype. I have never seen more comprehensive coverage on any topic on UA-cam, and the ability to comprehensively cover topics is the beauty of UA-cam. I need to watch this again and take notes so I can start experiencing Dizzy for myself. Really, really, really good work!
I had learned via QVC or what was the Shopping Channel or network. I begged my Mom to get Dizzy for the NES since they boasted so much about the adventure, it just LOOKED AWESOME. I got it, died twice, and never played it again.
American here who first played Dizzy on the Genesis. It and Micro Machines are what led me to be a Codemasters fan, and when the Oliver Twins Collection was announced for the Evercade, I knew I had to buy an Evercade so I could experience more Dizzy. Was not disappointed. This video was great to see some of the other Dizzy games and spinoffs I've never had the pleasure of playing. So, thanks.
Fantasy World Dizzy on the ZX Spectrum was the first video game I encountered as a young child that opened my mind showing me that games can be something more than fast-twitch simple action games like Galaga. I was entranced by it. After that I played Magicland Dizzy and I loved it even more.
The funny thing is in America, this guy was always just the face of unlicensed knock-off NES products. I remember him from the 80's, but I honestly had no idea that he had any actual significance whatsoever.
And to think, if Nintendo hadn't taken so much offense at game cheating devices, CodeMasters could have been just another Nintendo-licensed developer, their games known to millions more Americans.
@@BagOfMagicFood they could literally tell publishers how much they were going to get in royalties, how many games they were going to sell per year, and the number of games they could make per year. Nintendo was actually sued over their practices for all this.
Hey hey man, I had to pause the video at 33:45 because you said to let you know if we live outside the UK. I live in a small but growing town called Lindsay in Ontario Canada and yes indeed sir I am still watching and loving every second of this history of Dizzy/Codemasters. I have to say I am a huge fan of Dizzy, even that's an understatement. First video game I ever played was at 3 years old and it was treasure island dizzy on the NES, it was in the Quattro adventure cart. I unfortunately never had the older systems to play the other games but did play Fantastic adventures of dizzy as well and film futher in love. It got so bad I started having dreams where I was at my babysitters place as a kid/ or my own house and would just find random cartridges for Dizzy games and play them. They would be completely different levels and it blew my mind! There is a game on the PS4 called Dreams and I am slowly but surely actually remaking a combined world of most of the dizzy games. I.e Magic land dizzy, fantastic adventures, treasure island, crystal kingdom dizzy.
So many good memories. From the 1 life frustration of Treasure Island to successfully finishing Fantasy World (also the first Dizzy game I properly completed)..great work as always :)

This is such a great video, Dizzy was such a massive part of my childhood, Treasure island dizzy was my first Dizzy game, but still haven't ever completed it. owned all the dizzy games and spin off apart from fantastic Dizzy (my dad wouldn't pay the extra money for it.) Nostalgia is hitting me like a brick watching this.

Great video! I used to be a big fan of Dizzy back in the day (mostly the adventure games, wasn't keen on the arcaded ones), starting off with Fantasy World Dizzy, although my fave game in the series was Magicland. Ironic that a glitch for Spellbound Dizzy gets a mention - my copy of said game had a glitch where it would not register the command to give the shamrock to the leprechaun.
Great video! Brought back many memories of playing dizzy on my Amstrad CPC 464, how time flies, great times. The Oliver twins are super talented, so many classics! Let the good times roll!
Great video Dan. Dizzy will always have a special place in my heart, especially on the Spectrum. Such a charming and welcoming character for the 8 bit platforms.
I played Fantastic Dizzy on the Game Gear when I was young and it's the most nostalgic game for me. Much later I bought the Master System version and attempted to complete it, but the jump mechanics change drastically on the last boss to be much more like the NES version, so I wasn't able to beat it (you can see my entire attempt on my channel). Codemasters made some great games like Micro Machines, Cosmic Spacehead, and CJ Elephant Antics.
Thank so much for this video, cheered me up so much, which is so needed in this world at the moment. So much of my childhood weekends where me and my friends playing the Spectrum versions of this series.

This is def the best “history” video you have done in my opinion! So in depth. I was real young when I had dizzy games on C64 floppys and tapes... I had no idea how many there were, I though 2 or 3 of them were the same game! My faves were Dizzy down the rapids and Treasure island Dizzy. I loved the original but was so hard, especially as a 4+ year old! I could never use the bloody snorkel 😂
Fantastic video, guys! I'm a huge Dizzy fan. My favourite was always Magicland Dizzy. It's one of the most nostalic games for me. The first game I ever completed was Prince of the Yolk Folk. Does anyone remember Slightly Magic? I don't think the Oliver's had anything to do with it, but had kind of a Dizzy vibe.

Yep, I've always supported European devs because we've often got the short end of the stick in terms of publicity. I know we can't really complain in Britain as we have the biggest game industry outside of the US and Japan, but so many great games made here in the '80s were missed! What's the best Swedish-developed franchise/game?
High Five Bro. The only reason I started watching was because I played Fantastic Dizzy on Sega Genesis with my Mom when I was very young - one of the first video games I ever played. I stayed, cause I had no idea Dizzy lore was so deep. I always thought it felt like an old school DOS adventure, and finding out it started life as a ZX Spectrum game makes perfect sense. We never did beat Fantastic Dizzy, but I've since re-acquired a copy. I'll have to see if I can run the gauntlet and finally finish it after nearly 30 years. No save states, only original hardware here. Thanks for the awesome video. I could tell a lot of effort went into it.
It was amazing to hear there was talk back in the day of making an American version of it. The writers sat down with some Hollywood types and one of the things they were asked is "Who's the hero?" They were just baffled. "None of them?" The hollywood types were equally baffled. "Then who's the audience meant to root for?" There was a lot of confusion all around as the TV execs from America just didn't get it. There was a similar problem with Red Dwarf where they tried to make Lister a tall, dashing hero character in the pilot (this was mocked in the season 5 episode 6 "Back to Reality" where they discover "Red Dwarf" is a virtual reality game with David Lister being the hero character and they'd been playing the game wrong this whole time.
I’m American. Around 4-5 I remember playing the “The Fantastic adventures of Dizzy” on NES. Though I remember it being too hard for me. I didn’t get far, if anywhere. But the game stuck with me. I never forgot the images of Dizzy in the treehouse. After like 20 years I found it. I own it, and I’ve been trying to beat it all week lol. I have always loved this game. The graphics really saved this game in my memory. Playing through it, It’s a beautiful game.

Of course I know what the Young Ones and Only Fools and Horses are, I've only been watching PBS my entire life. Although sadly our local station doesn't do the Brit Coms anymore. Anyway, I gave a go at Dizzy on emulator sometime last year. I think if I were a kid again and had more patience, I'd really enjoy it.

It gave me both a great walk down memory lane and lots of new information as well. I was a die-hard C64 kid and so many great memories, especially around Treasure Island Dizzy and Fantasy World Dizzy, those two kept me busy for hours. Even if I did keep dropping the snorkel at the wrong time and dying. I'd never really thought how Dizzy was an early mascot - makes perfect sense & probably part of why I loved the games so much. When I was a wee'un, my babysitters son had a commodore (I think) and would sometimes let me watch him play treasure island dizzy. I never actually got to play it myself, mind. But it always stuck with me. Incredible music, graphics and fiendish (well, I was 7 so maybe not...) puzzles! Great stuff!

American here, rented Fantastic Adventures of Dizzy as a kid and really liked it, was into King's Quest et al and saw this as a hybrid of Sierra and Mario. Had no idea until the 00's and hot takes of the internet how huge this guy was back home. This is one case where the US missed out on a top-notch franchise!

Lived in North America all my life - sort of heard of Only Fools and Horses but don't think I've seen it. The Young Ones though? They got shown afterschool growing up on our Comedy Central around 4pm or so and watched every episode! Still like to use Vyvyan's line "What I need is a drill, some hedge-trimmers, and a gallon of ordinary household bleach..." to the confusion of most of my coworkers
Well, you've earned yourself a well deserved like for this one Dan, great job. Despite being an owner of both a Spectrum 48k and 128k +2 back in the day, I've never actually played any of the Dizzy games. I'm going to have to rectify that at some point.

As an American gamer, I was never exposed to Dizzy until recently, so I'm looking at the series with a pair of virgin eyes sans the proverbial rose-colored lenses. Great video! Never heard of Dizzy myself even though I'm from Europe. Maybe i was a bit too young as i was born in 83. Or maybe my interests weren't there yet to remember it. We had the Nintendo in my country so focus went to that and the gameboy (we didn't had a nintendo at home, only the gameboy but my uncle and friends had the NES). Still was a nice watch and to see how it all started :)
I love Dizzy when I was a kid I had a ZX spectrum (the 1 with the tape deck on the side of it) and played Dizzy game god knows how many times. Dizzy is such a special child hood game of mine and brings back child hood memories.
Ahh! The NES Fantastic Adventures of Dizzy game was one of the first games I ever had. I loved playing that when I was little but it was so difficult! So much nostalgia.

I got an Amiga 500 pretty late in its history (1991ish). Treasure Island Dizzy was one of the first games I had, and since there was really no way for me to get more games at the time, I played the heck out of everything I owned. I did even manage to beat the game, as obscenely obfuscated as its mechanics were. Amiga games were notoriously impossible-on-purpose, so whenever a game seemed hypothetically winnable, I took the time to make it happen. Beating this game, and another by the name of Axel's Magic Hammer, mark rare success stories in my Amiga gaming history.
I learned about Dizzy (and the ZX Spectrum and all the other 8bit micro stuff I missed due to being an American) due exclusively to Retro Gamer Magazine, and I LOVE this stuff. I'd love for you to do more videos on the devs and publishers on the 8-bits.
I remember my local store having a big display of Dizzy sometime in the early 90s. I must have had everyone that came out on the ST. I also got to meet them at an event a few years back. They planned all the games out on sheets of grid paper stuck together into a big map.
Loved Dizzy on my Spectrum growing up, remember having the cap and made my own Dizzy lunchbox by tracing the characters from magazines, cutting them out and making a scene on the lunchbox. I did get some funny looks :)
I remember I watched my sister play Dizzy games and she recalls one time she got all the way to Zaks in the first game, had the potion and everything, but couldn't figure out how to throw it. She never completed it. There was a time as well after much begging we convinced mum to let us phone the helpline on the stipulation that if the call went on too long we'd hang up because it would be expensive. I vividly remember a woman's voice just talking at us describing every detail of what to do in a somewhat monotone voice (makes sense since she'd have no frame of reference for anything she was reading, I imagine). After a minute we realised it was going to take forever and cost a fortune to get to the late-game bit we were stuck on. Fascinating to find out that was their sister reading it out.
What a great video! As a guy born in 1977 getting a Spectrum +2, Dizzy was gaming. I just went through my games & realised, from this video of gameplay, a few of the Dizzy games I got, I never played!! I should set my Spectrum back up and have a go at Fantasy World & Magic Land Dizzy.
Nice who doesn't like a bit of Dizzy, my first was on the speccy 48k I brought loads of the games they were amazingly priced so helped a lot if you didn't a lot to burn, my fav platform was the Amiga though.

As a past and current retro gamer from the U.S., i didnt know much about dizzy. but what a treat to dive into these old uk gems. Thank you slope for showing me dizzy so i could experience these games.
The music in Fantastic Dizzy for the mega drive is possibly the best music in ANY game ever made. Every time I hear it I'm instantly transported to xmas '93 when i 1st played it. LOVE that game.

Huge Dizzy fan from the US here since I was a little kid and first played Treasure Island Dizzy on Quattro Adventure on a rental. A few years later I found the Dizzy standalone game (I can't remember the name now) at a local swap meet and had the only other gold cartridge in my collection outside of the Zelda games. Was cool to later find out how many Dizzy games there actually were with emulation.

Thanks for this video! So many childhood memories playing Dizzy in the 80's and early 90's on my Commodore 64 and Amiga. I spent many hours with Fast Food Dizzy and jumping on that shark fin in Magicland Dizzy gave me nightmares as a kid!

Drop Dead Fred was on TV in the US a lot back in the early 90s and introduced me to Rik Mayall. So when Comedy Central started airing a show that he was in, I watched it. And that's how a yank learned what The Young Ones was. Plus they had an episode where Motorhead played Ace of Spades. I couldn't pass that up.
I'm a half-Brit that grew up outside of the UK, but I watched The Young Ones religiously as a kid. I think we had everything on VHS, and I even showed part of an episode at school when my English teacher badgered me into bringing "something British" to class - needless to say, it was shut off after a few minutes because no one could understand it. Also, Rik Mayall died far, far too soon.

One of the nice things about the modern era. Steam and GoG lets people self-publish.
Yeah, there are problems. But a driven, self-motivated person can create a game a sell it. (Not for a lot, but still some)
A small studio can become quite good. Klie (Oxygen Not Included, etc.), Concerned Ape with Stardew Valley, and a couple other small devs.
Happens to all developers really, especially ones that belong to a third party studio.
Ended up making it over here from AVGN about the Deck Enhancer, which had a number of Dizzy titles. Had no idea this was A Big Thing in the UK.
Likewise, as an American I never heard of Dizzy before the AVGN episode.
I blame the echo chamber that goes on for Nintendo platforms and gaming history.
@@pferreira1983 Quite right. I don't blame Americans of course but most of them have a _huge_ chunk missing from their knowledge of retro gaming history due to their lack of exposure to European micros.
@@sheilaburrowes9081 The issue I have is that the American UA-camrs are the loudest voices in teaching retro gaming history. There's millions of games not experienced by US gamers that have been released.

Thank you for this one! Always love your complete histories and remember when I first discovered your channel asking about a Dizzy one. Fond memories of these on the Amstrad! Don't often comment but always watch. Only made one request before and that was for Dizzy. So after watching this I'm going to put out another request I'd love to see. U.N. Squadron! My all time favourite shmup with an absolute belter of a soundtrack which I have many remixes of, not to mention all my tee's of the franchise! :D I've actually never played the arcade game which is shocking for me. Anyways, keep up the stellar work!
Code Masters had some really great games. Fantastic Dizzy, Ultimate Stuntman, Micro Machines, Big Nose the Caveman, Super Robin Hood. Boy, did they have phenomenal music and gameplay.
Also every single one of their racing games
Dizzy was very much my first experience of a mascot game before Sonic, only ever completed one Dizzy game - Magicland Dizzy - but kept trying on each game I played to try and improve. It's sad to hear how badly the twins were treated by greedy publishers who only cared about making a profit instead of supporting quality games and a pair of clearly very talented developers.
Dizzy is very much one of the pinnacles of British gaming to this day.
Dizzy, the acid trip of a Sega Genesis rental that I had to convince myself actually happened. Although I only had the game for a weekend, this Codemasters classic stuck with me for life. None of my friends have ever mentioned the game so I'm probably one of the few American fans.
To this day, Magic land Dizzy is my favourite game of all time. The music was great and the puzzles for a kid of about 6-7 were challenging but fun enough to keep it entertaining. I had the entire Dizzy series and other than spellbound which I felt was far too long and frustrating with the wind tunnel and rocks, every game was great.
Well being an American I've heard about you hyping this for sometime and thought "what the hell is he talking about?" But it was indeed worth the hype. I have never seen more comprehensive coverage on any topic on UA-cam, and the ability to comprehensively cover topics is the beauty of UA-cam. I need to watch this again and take notes so I can start experiencing Dizzy for myself. Really, really, really good work!
I had learned via QVC or what was the Shopping Channel or network. I begged my Mom to get Dizzy for the NES since they boasted so much about the adventure, it just LOOKED AWESOME. I got it, died twice, and never played it again.
American here who first played Dizzy on the Genesis. It and Micro Machines are what led me to be a Codemasters fan, and when the Oliver Twins Collection was announced for the Evercade, I knew I had to buy an Evercade so I could experience more Dizzy. Was not disappointed.
This video was great to see some of the other Dizzy games and spinoffs I've never had the pleasure of playing. So, thanks.
Fantasy World Dizzy on the ZX Spectrum was the first video game I encountered as a young child that opened my mind showing me that games can be something more than fast-twitch simple action games like Galaga. I was entranced by it. After that I played Magicland Dizzy and I loved it even more.
The funny thing is in America, this guy was always just the face of unlicensed knock-off NES products. I remember him from the 80's, but I honestly had no idea that he had any actual significance whatsoever.
And to think, if Nintendo hadn't taken so much offense at game cheating devices, CodeMasters could have been just another Nintendo-licensed developer, their games known to millions more Americans.

Hey hey man, I had to pause the video at 33:45 because you said to let you know if we live outside the UK. I live in a small but growing town called Lindsay in Ontario Canada and yes indeed sir I am still watching and loving every second of this history of Dizzy/Codemasters. I have to say I am a huge fan of Dizzy, even that's an understatement. First video game I ever played was at 3 years old and it was treasure island dizzy on the NES, it was in the Quattro adventure cart. I unfortunately never had the older systems to play the other games but did play Fantastic adventures of dizzy as well and film futher in love. It got so bad I started having dreams where I was at my babysitters place as a kid/ or my own house and would just find random cartridges for Dizzy games and play them. They would be completely different levels and it blew my mind! There is a game on the PS4 called Dreams and I am slowly but surely actually remaking a combined world of most of the dizzy games. I.e Magic land dizzy, fantastic adventures, treasure island, crystal kingdom dizzy.

Great video! I used to be a big fan of Dizzy back in the day (mostly the adventure games, wasn't keen on the arcaded ones), starting off with Fantasy World Dizzy, although my fave game in the series was Magicland. Ironic that a glitch for Spellbound Dizzy gets a mention - my copy of said game had a glitch where it would not register the command to give the shamrock to the leprechaun.
I've heard of that glitch! From the smaller version, right? I remember hearing there was a workaround where you stand in a certain spot...

Great video Dan. Dizzy will always have a special place in my heart, especially on the Spectrum. Such a charming and welcoming character for the 8 bit platforms.
I played Fantastic Dizzy on the Game Gear when I was young and it's the most nostalgic game for me. Much later I bought the Master System version and attempted to complete it, but the jump mechanics change drastically on the last boss to be much more like the NES version, so I wasn't able to beat it (you can see my entire attempt on my channel). Codemasters made some great games like Micro Machines, Cosmic Spacehead, and CJ Elephant Antics.
Thank so much for this video, cheered me up so much, which is so needed in this world at the moment. So much of my childhood weekends where me and my friends playing the Spectrum versions of this series.
I'm from the US so no idea who Dizzy is but great video. I would love to see a complete history of the Oliver Twins I didn't know who they were until this video. They definitely have an interesting back story.

one of the very first video games i ever played on my dad's computer. MS DOS was technically my first gaming platform. I played Dizzy a lot, alongside Doom, Golden Axe, Tunnels of Armageddon, F15 Eagle Strike 2, and my personal favorite; Into The Eagle's Nest

This is def the best “history” video you have done in my opinion! So in depth. I was real young when I had dizzy games on C64 floppys and tapes... I had no idea how many there were, I though 2 or 3 of them were the same game! My faves were Dizzy down the rapids and Treasure island Dizzy. I loved the original but was so hard, especially as a 4+ year old! I could never use the bloody snorkel 😂

Fantastic video, guys! I'm a huge Dizzy fan. My favourite was always Magicland Dizzy. It's one of the most nostalic games for me. The first game I ever completed was Prince of the Yolk Folk.

Yep, I've always supported European devs because we've often got the short end of the stick in terms of publicity. I know we can't really complain in Britain as we have the biggest game industry outside of the US and Japan, but so many great games made here in the '80s were missed! What's the best Swedish-developed franchise/game?

The only reason I started watching was because I played Fantastic Dizzy on Sega Genesis with my Mom when I was very young - one of the first video games I ever played. I stayed, cause I had no idea Dizzy lore was so deep. I always thought it felt like an old school DOS adventure, and finding out it started life as a ZX Spectrum game makes perfect sense.
We never did beat Fantastic Dizzy, but I've since re-acquired a copy. I'll have to see if I can run the gauntlet and finally finish it after nearly 30 years. No save states, only original hardware here.

American here. Got introduced to The Young Ones via really early Comedy Central. Still my favorite TV show of all time.
I used to watch it on MTV in the eighties! It was so funny and weird to 10 year old me.
It was amazing to hear there was talk back in the day of making an American version of it. The writers sat down with some Hollywood types and one of the things they were asked is "Who's the hero?"
They were just baffled. "None of them?"
The hollywood types were equally baffled. "Then who's the audience meant to root for?"
There was a lot of confusion all around as the TV execs from America just didn't get it. There was a similar problem with Red Dwarf where they tried to make Lister a tall, dashing hero character in the pilot (this was mocked in the season 5 episode 6 "Back to Reality" where they discover "Red Dwarf" is a virtual reality game with David Lister being the hero character and they'd been playing the game wrong this whole time.
I’m American. Around 4-5 I remember playing the “The Fantastic adventures of Dizzy” on NES. Though I remember it being too hard for me. I didn’t get far, if anywhere. But the game stuck with me.
I never forgot the images of Dizzy in the treehouse.
After like 20 years I found it. I own it, and I’ve been trying to beat it all week lol.
I have always loved this game. The graphics really saved this game in my memory.
Playing through it, It’s a beautiful game.

Dizzy was my childhood! My dad and my uncle used to call each other to trade solutions the problems . On the zx spectrum. The oliver twins are definitely legends in my eyes
Of course I know what the Young Ones and Only Fools and Horses are, I've only been watching PBS my entire life. Although sadly our local station doesn't do the Brit Coms anymore. Anyway, I gave a go at Dizzy on emulator sometime last year. I think if I were a kid again and had more patience, I'd really enjoy it.

It gave me both a great walk down memory lane and lots of new information as well. I was a die-hard C64 kid and so many great memories, especially around Treasure Island Dizzy and Fantasy World Dizzy, those two kept me busy for hours. Even if I did keep dropping the snorkel at the wrong time and dying. I'd never really thought how Dizzy was an early mascot - makes perfect sense & probably part of why I loved the games so much. When I was a wee'un, my babysitters son had a commodore (I think) and would sometimes let me watch him play treasure island dizzy. I never actually got to play it myself, mind. But it always stuck with me. Incredible music, graphics and fiendish (well, I was 7 so maybe not...) puzzles! Great stuff!

American here, rented Fantastic Adventures of Dizzy as a kid and really liked it, was into King's Quest et al and saw this as a hybrid of Sierra and Mario. Had no idea until the 00's and hot takes of the internet how huge this guy was back home. This is one case where the US missed out on a top-notch franchise!

Lived in North America all my life - sort of heard of Only Fools and Horses but don't think I've seen it. The Young Ones though? They got shown afterschool growing up on our Comedy Central around 4pm or so and watched every episode! Still like to use Vyvyan's line "What I need is a drill, some hedge-trimmers, and a gallon of ordinary household bleach..." to the confusion of most of my coworkers
Well, you've earned yourself a well deserved like for this one Dan, great job. Despite being an owner of both a Spectrum 48k and 128k +2 back in the day, I've never actually played any of the Dizzy games. I'm going to have to rectify that at some point.
Great video. It was very thorough and hits all the right feels. It's very apparent that a lot of time was spent producing it and I certainly enjoyed it. As an American gamer, I was never exposed to Dizzy until recently, so I'm looking at the series with a pair of virgin eyes sans the proverbial rose-colored lenses. Dizzy was on NES before aladdin deck enhancer. Never seen one, but played at least 2 Dizzy. They had gold cartridge.
Great video! Never heard of Dizzy myself even though I'm from Europe. Maybe i was a bit too young as i was born in 83. Or maybe my interests weren't there yet to remember it. We had the Nintendo in my country so focus went to that and the gameboy (we didn't had a nintendo at home, only the gameboy but my uncle and friends had the NES).

I love Dizzy when I was a kid I had a ZX spectrum (the 1 with the tape deck on the side of it) and played Dizzy game god knows how many times. Dizzy is such a special child hood game of mine and brings back child hood memories.
Ahh! The NES Fantastic Adventures of Dizzy game was one of the first games I ever had. I loved playing that when I was little but it was so difficult! So much nostalgia.

I got an Amiga 500 pretty late in its history (1991ish). Treasure Island Dizzy was one of the first games I had, and since there was really no way for me to get more games at the time, I played the heck out of everything I owned. I did even manage to beat the game, as obscenely obfuscated as its mechanics were. Amiga games were notoriously impossible-on-purpose, so whenever a game seemed hypothetically winnable, I took the time to make it happen. Beating this game, and another by the name of Axel's Magic Hammer, mark rare success stories in my Amiga gaming history.
I learned about Dizzy (and the ZX Spectrum and all the other 8bit micro stuff I missed due to being an American) due exclusively to Retro Gamer Magazine, and I LOVE this stuff. I'd love for you to do more videos on the devs and publishers on the 8-bits.

I also got to meet them at an event a few years back. They planned all the games out on sheets of grid paper stuck together into a big map.

Loved Dizzy on my Spectrum growing up, remember having the cap and made my own Dizzy lunchbox by tracing the characters from magazines, cutting them out and making a scene on the lunchbox. I did get some funny looks :)
I remember I watched my sister play Dizzy games and she recalls one time she got all the way to Zaks in the first game, had the potion and everything, but couldn't figure out how to throw it. She never completed it.
There was a time as well after much begging we convinced mum to let us phone the helpline on the stipulation that if the call went on too long we'd hang up because it would be expensive.
I vividly remember a woman's voice just talking at us describing every detail of what to do in a somewhat monotone voice (makes sense since she'd have no frame of reference for anything she was reading, I imagine). After a minute we realised it was going to take forever and cost a fortune to get to the late-game bit we were stuck on.
Fascinating to find out that was their sister reading it out.

What a great video! As a guy born in 1977 getting a Spectrum +2, Dizzy was gaming. I just went through my games & realised, from this video of gameplay, a few of the Dizzy games I got, I never played!! I should set my Spectrum back up and have a go at Fantasy World & Magic Land Dizzy.
Nice who doesn't like a bit of Dizzy, my first was on the speccy 48k I brought loads of the games they were amazingly priced so helped a lot if you didn't a lot to burn, my fav platform was the Amiga though.
