Beautiful machine inside and out. Looks great and works too. So I am confused on the 4" shackle; is that a standard size? I would like to run 32" on my Scout with a 2 1/2" spring lift. Would I need to replace the shackles as well?
Beautiful! One question - why would you remove the front shackle sway-bar (connecting flat-bar) assembly as they also helps brace the front spring shackles. Personal preference: I also would not have raised the body off the frame more than stock. That doesn't really help approach/departure or ground clearance and to me it looks cleaner. Thanks for posting!
Hey Everett, I believe this truck never had one from the factory and we didn't add one. Many of our trucks we do keep or add them. Owner preference. We added a 1" body lift to help with clearance of exhaust, t-case and tires. We really don't believe in anything more than a 1" body lift.
Awesome build! You mention that the roll bar is the standard 4 point but with “extended legs.” Is that something you guys sell or source from somewhere else?
Hey Russell, currently we only build them for our in-house projects. Hopefully soon well get them all cnc bent and may slap them on the website at that point in time.
What do people do if they don't put a tire carrier on the back bumper - just not have one or put it in the back bed? Do you have a tie down for that if so?
Factory the spare tire was up against the drivers side bed wall. However if your running anything bigger than around a 31" this doesn't work anymore. Yes, your next option would probably be lay it flat in the back. For this I would use something similar to the factory tie-down where it is an anchored threaded rod that you slide the rim over and then thread a plate and a nut to hold it down.

Some people are looking for something a little more reliable and dependable, more power, better fuel economy and less oil on the floor of their garage. An LS swap is one of the easier ways to accomplish all that.
But then you have computer, and electronics crap ! The big headache of modern vehicles !? I never got the whole reason of having a classic vehicle, just to turn it into a new one ?!! Sure, modify it, but K.I.S.S. !!! Keep it simple stupid !! The old stuff can be fixed on the spot !! I know, everyone says, it's personal preference ! People today are always sacrificing for comfort, and easy !! That was never the plan for these vehicles !! Listen to the original commercials ! But generations kept getting softer !!!

To answer your question directly, in 2005 I was presented with rebuilding a 345 or swap a junkyard 5.3LS complete for $500, the motor was 4 years old and 30,000 miles. So for less money I have a modern motor. They deliver the power in a different way but with proper gearing the performance is certainly better. Doesn't matter hot or cold, high or low altitude or even laying on its side or upside down, still gonna run. I haven't wheeled anything with a carb in about 20 years and there is no F'n way I would ever willingly do so again. I see people spend more on their carburetors than I spend on modern engines! To me everything of old represents hassle and headache, all the little stuff you have to do and deal with all the time. Modern engines will start when you turn the key and you are good to go. I haven't done anything to mine at all since putting it in, nothing but oil changes and fuel filter changes. Now I am ready to make some "just for fun" power. starting my shopping list for a 78/75 turbo and higher volume fuel delivery. Heck even the injectors will only be modified, not replaced, I will de-cap them and go from 20 something lb/hr to about 80 lb/hr. for the cost of a higher end carb I am making 750hp on a junk yard engine. If I blow it up? 300-500 and I have a new motor to replace the busted motor. add to that, GM makes more than a million a year of these motors, almost that many in trucks alone. They are plentiful. Gen 5 motors with direct injection have essentially a racing capable fuel system already. Weight saving is considerable, I believe my 345 cast intake was 90lbs alone while my composite intake is 3 lbs with the TB on it.

I dont know what your point is other than if you need to fix it, simple is easier. My point is that, this is in fact simple but also so reliable that you dont need to fix anything, it just works with an LS motor. The LS motors are far superior in basically every way. If you want to keep it original cool, but as to why we do it, its pretty clear... they are much better.
So you guys are putting fuel injected engines in cars that were meant to have carbureted engines? Believe it or not some of us think its cool having to pump the gas when starting the engine. Its part of what makes it a classic.
Some cars weren't meant to have seat belts or cup holders either. Don't get me wrong, I have a Terra with stock drivetrain and I love it. Around town and romping through the woods the Terra is perfection. Like you said it is a classic. I also have a Scout II with an LS drivetrain and over the past couple years I've taken several 2000+ mile road trips in my LS Scout II through deserts and mountains and there is just no comparison. By no means is an LS swap for everybody nor do we think every truck should have an LS. But, next time your in Iowa, swing on by and we'll get you behind the wheel of one of these and then we can have an honest discussion!
Nowadays, I am just happy to NOT see a classic vehicle go to the crusher, so if someone wants to build a tough/dependable daily driver out of an old truck and drop in a more efficient, modern EFI motor/trans that does not stall out on steep hills, I say go for it! If it is a weekend warrior, show off vehicle, or super rare, than keep it original. Ultimately, as long as you own it and make it yours, it does not really matter what anyone else thinks.
John, are you saying the entire culture of modifying and improving vehicles is wrong? I will say, in general styling, we try our best to direct customers to maintain true to the heritage as these vehicles had a very unique look and feel. We also do not install auto door locks or auto windows as we believe there are certain things that make the experience of these vintage trucks. However, poor fuel mileage and constant maintenance are a part of the experience many customers do not want.

Stock shackle is 3". Going to a 4" shackle generally gives about 1/2" of lift. With your lift springs you should be fine with stock shackles.
When you do that reverse the shackle it make a huge difference with how it drives trust me
