  • Meet an "old friend" of this channel, Acripeza reticulata, the mountain katydid. A very intriguing katydid species native to Australia.
    But that's not all! There were many other fascinating creatures on this outing, including mantids, golden orb-weavers, other katydids, and giant grasshoppers.

    The combination of technical and measured speech with all intent to inform and the occasional tone-consistent segue into rude language and a good joke is just beautiful. Keep doing what you do.

      I think that’s one of the main reasons I really enjoy the field trip videos - a sense of vicarious adventure. They let me relive a lot of my most interesting trips, and allow others to experience the same.

      Thanks!
      Videos about overlooked animals generally do quite poorly as far as viewership goes, but they’re still definitely worth making.

    Love the katydid show off! Predatory katydids are arguably my favorite predatory insects, I've just found it funny for the longest time that (how I like to think about it) one random katydid a couple million years ago decided to munch on another bug and now there's a whole group doing it LOL

    • @BugsandBiology
      @BugsandBiology  4 місяці тому +2

      Katydids are such awesome insects.
      Unfortunately videos about them have a tendency to underperform, and this one seems to be no exception.

    • @Broly-sd4qp
      @Broly-sd4qp 4 місяці тому +1

      @BugsandBiology yeah, the main reason I would guess is that most viewers of entomology based channels have an obsession with the arachnid/myriapod half of it.... or generally they want the fear factor from the bitey things (and katydid bites hurt they just don't know it LOL)

    • @BugsandBiology
      @BugsandBiology  4 місяці тому +1

      @@Broly-sd4qp Katydids, even the ones more inclined towards herbivory, have bitten me far, far more times than spiders. I've only taken one non-intentional bite from a spider (a jumping spider that got stuck in my shirt), but katydids have nibbled on my hands more often than I can remember.
      I think also, for my channel in particular, "big scary/deadly spider" is the main catalyst for views. Even centipede videos, which were my channel's original focus, tend to not do very well. Although paleo-content has shown some serious promise as of late.

    • @Broly-sd4qp

      @BugsandBiology and all of that makes sense! I'll be here for whatever you're posting, even if I forget to comment lol, so best of luck with whatever content you keep making! Random offshoot question you don't have to bother with if you don't want to, but do you have any New Caledonian inverts you know something about you could talk about at some point? I know it's a little niche, it's just a place I've had a long held interest in~ with info being a little hard to find :) thanks for the replies btw! Always great when the creator is in the comments

    • @BugsandBiology
      @BugsandBiology  4 місяці тому +1

      Unfortunately I have no access to any inverts from that locality; Australia has very strict import/export laws when it comes to live animals, and we’re only allowed to keep native inverts.

    Katydids are so underrated, they are so cool and variable in appearance, im glad you made another video about them. Acripeza reticulata is indeed, a very cool katydid. Chlorobalius is my favourite though, its a shame they’re only found in the less populated inland regions.
