There is an ugly movement in universities to attack classic music because it was written by "dead white men", but some of it is so transcendent that it moves people who know nothing about it. There is a great video of symphonies around the world playing Beethoven's 9th; each sounds different, each is beautiful.

"What he heard now resembled the movement, over
centuries, of things that to men seem motionless only
because their own lives are short: the movement of trees as
they grow and of stars altering their relative places in
the heavens, of mountains slowly ground away through
millennia of heat, frost and storm. It was like the building of
a city. Great, squared blocks of antiphonal sound were
swung and lowered into place, one upon another, until the
heart stood far below, gazing up at the clouds marching
endlessly across the dark line of the completed ramparts.
Zilthe was standing with closed eyes and outstretched
palms. Kelderek, though he saw nothing and felt afraid,
seemed to himself to have been lifted to some plane on
which there was no more need of prayer, since the harmony
that is continually present to the mind of God had been
made audible to his own prostrate, worshipping soul. He
had sunk to his knees and his mouth was twisted like that of
a man in agony. Still listening, he heard the singing
diminish and then slide quickly into silence, like a diver into
    deep water." Richard Adams---"Shardik"

Thanks, Pope, for all you do in spreading YES music to the world. Yours is my favorite You Tube site. Continue on your YES journey. Merry Christmas (don't forget to take a listen to Jon's solo Christmas album "3 Ships". Peace.

Bro you need to do some Iron Maiden songs reactions, should start with 'Hallowed be thy name' from the Rock in Rio concert or 'Live after Death' concert, you will be amazed by them and they are one of the GOATS like Pink Floyd

It is a beautiful piece but there is not alot of joy in it. There is a very sorrowful emotion being delivered here, I am curious as to what the libretto might reveal. The deep baritone was wonderfully shocking and instantly brought a whole new intimate level of darkness into it.
    Who was the composer?

  • @mikecaetano

Interesting. A concert in a church or a clip of a religious observance? Both maybe? "The Glinka Choral School is the oldest professional academic institution in Russia. It dates back to 1479 when the Sovereign’s Chorus of Singing Scribes (founded by Grand Duke Ivan III of Moscow in 1476) opened its Chorus of Young Choristers. The singers performed at the celebration of the Russian Empire’s new capital foundation. The ensemble’s history has been closely tied to the history of St Petersburg even since." -- Mariinsky Theatre The composition is "Reveille ('Pushkin Wreath'-No.7)" by Georgy Sviridov (1915-1998). The notion of Russian heaven leads me to think about the war in Ukraine and the conscripts foolishly sent to their deaths. For more ethereal classical music of that sort check out Arvo Pärt --- "Te Deum" performed by the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and "De Profundis" performed by the Chór Polskiego Radia (Polish Radio Choir). And for something with a somewhat more uptempo sublimity check out the Catalyst Quartet performing Philip Glass - String Quartet No. 3 "Mishima", VI -- The UA-cam clip of that has over a million views.
