Interesting video. I actually lived in my truck for over 6 months 6 years ago and trust me, it wasn't by choice. I was unemployed and homeless. I have a beautifully restored home here in PA and though I don't have a pickup truck I do own a 1981 pop-up camper. I keep it set up in my brothers field in New Jersey and try to stay in it on weekends. It's hard to explain but I sleep 10 times better in my old camper than I do in my house and the food always tastes better in the field whether it's a hot dog or a can of tuna. I love the simple outdoor life and find it to be therapeutic. I'm 59 and some of my family members think I'm off my rocker at times but I wouldn't trade it for the world. Normalcy can be quite boring if you ask me. Enjoy your boondocking trips to Walmart, I think it's awesome :)
when you rubbed together the empty paper bag that holds the noodles i felt that. i know what its like to want every bit of seasoning out of those bags.
The cot is a great idea. When I was in the military I was forced to sleep on the cold floor of a truck mounted repair shelter. Even with a foam pad and sleeping bag I could feel the cold coming up from the floor. It was the most miserable night of my life. I don't just dislike the cold I hate it.
I upgraded to the airport 😂. Safe and the police is polite with me. They know that I’m homeless and that I’m trying to be on my feet. In fact someone behind me and brought some drinks! The best thing happened to me, I do not have bills anymore and actually can pay my student loans that was a big BS
Life is short! Enjoy it as you can I’ve been living this way since May of 2015. Being able to save money, eat well, do the things you like, and buy things you want, is my main motivation for living this lifestyle. Their system is slavery and oppression, and I don’t like being an oppressed slave. I’ll fight it to the best of my ability. I bought a step van (bread truck), and I’ll be fixing it up this spring. I would NOT be able to afford rent and utilities in an apartment even if I wanted. That’s how oppressive their system is. I would have to be completely enslaved to a job just to afford to scrape by their system.
This would be a great video for someone seeking a temporary or emerging emergency situation and owning a pickup with a cap. Great to show minimalist accomplishment. Very simple. Thanks.
I come back to your old videos from time to time. I am so glad you kept doing your thing and ignored all the hateful comments in here. Nothing but respect Steve!
This reminds me of the many times in 20 years I was homeless and living in various vehicles. The van was the easiest. Lol. I had a makeshift bed of couch cushions, blankets and sleeping bags. I liked it at times.
I do this when I go to parties with my friends. I have a cot in the bed of my truck and a heavy sleeping bag. Then go to sleep once im done for the night.
Add a remote car starter to your truck. They shut off after 15-20M of running. Leave your heater turned on, full blast at night and your cab to bed window open. Then if in the middle of the night you want some heat, press the start button on key fob. It will run car for a while and let heat in and shut off a short time later. Or buy a Mr. Heater that uses the tiny propane tanks xD
I wouldnt trust the exhaust to not get into the cap, not like the bed of trucks are air tight, or the bed itself for that matter. The beds of trucks are separate from the cabin, and not sealed off, not meant to be, by design water and stuff has to drain from them when it rains and stuff.
My dad built an insert to slide into the back. It had a bed on each side, a small table in the middle and storage underneath. He and my brother used it when they went on overnight fishing trips. As a teen, I rode in the back on a trip from IN to FL (and back), laying on a bed and reading a book. I also had the cooler, so I had to pass drinks and snacks through the back window to my folks. LOL Good times back then, although totally unsafe.
Something I loved when I was doing this in my suburban was charging an extra battery with a solar panel and using it to run an electric blanket and a flat screen tv. I actually liked it better than a hotel room. Very warm and cozy.
Really like your minimalist setup. I did this for a year back in 2006 throughout the Pacific Northwest when I came into a little cash. Started with a 2004 Ford Ranger Supercab I had already paid off, I added a Leer Midrise pickup shell with sliding tinted windows (ventilation) , and an insulated pickup bed liner. I also bought a cot, a large Walmart electric thermoelectric cooler (no ice), and a Schumacher jump starter/power station, mainly for charging my laptop and other electronics. When the Leer shell was attached the installers were able to set me up with a 12V outlet in the truck bed and a 2nd battery. I also had a local seamstress make velcro blackout window covers for privacy. Truck stops were great for showering, and I stayed at a lot of road stops with amenities when not camping at overnight campgrounds. Years later after settling back down I sold the truck and still miss it and the free lifestyle I had.
For the cooking burner I would recommend a “C” clamp on one of the three legs to fasten the burner to the table so that it is not easily knocked off of the table. EDIT: oops I see I left that tip here in the comments 11 months ago - - as Gilda Radner used to say - - NEVER MIND!

Man it's awesome seeing you go from boondocking and loving it, to having an apartment and still getting a kick out of it, and now you have all that land and a bus. Lol you're the man Steve!
Adding a little reflective thermo-material to the windows would not only do wonders for insulation but it would increase your stealth substantially. I always enjoy your content, thanks!
Years ago I had a 76 Chevy 4x4. I put an insulated topper on it. I took 3/4" plywood and cut it to fit the bed. Covered it with carpet and with the extra plywood I made a bed that went sideways at the front of the bed. Took my hunting dog with me and camped out for a few days! Had 40 gallons of fuel (13 mpg's) and a shotgun and a dog! Oh the memories! I know you recorded this a few years ago,,,, but it brought back such good memories! Oh and back then I did "step 2"!
When I see eighteen wheelers stuck on a snowy highway with all the other motorist stuck in their cars, I think: These drivers are well set to stay warm and cozy in their sleepers. In cars people are with their kids or elderly with their coffee and a snack bar if they are lucky! And some dont have proper winter coats and boots to endure the cold. For most drivers, if the better option when you dont have to take the road in a winter storm is not to take the road. At least in a big truck you will be safe.
It's refreshing to see someone being safe and sound and respecting walmart without acting so parinoid and dramatic over it lo love your gourmet cooking lol no I understand the video. Thanks keep on camping / boondocking when And wherever you can

Also, You've got sound advice for fledgling stealth campers. Love the "Step two" methodology! Hunker down and enjoy a step two!
okay so I know this is a little late, but I personally, not having done this myself, but I do know a bit about power saving stuff. Nonetheless enough ranbling back to the point. I would recommend taking your current setup and changing your power source to a separate battery stored underneath the sleeping area. the reason for this is to keep your battery from being accidentally completely discharged, also iwound recommend getting a VERY small desk, maybe even a usb one, but aim it out the cab window if you do happen to cook, closing the one to truck, but keeping the topper open. this would keep any form of fumes and vapor out of the sleeping area, as well as it being very power conservative since you can use a simple usb converter you can buy for a buck, and with a cheap $2 extension cord would add more plugs. this would also keep the window closed by using a closed circuit in the back, thus conserving more heat and more calories, keeping food consumption low. again sorry for the long winded comment, but just thought I'd share a bit of information that came to mind.
Those Mylar camping blankets they sell in the camping sections at Walmart and sporting good stores are excellent to tape over windows..pulled tight you can see out but it looks like foil to anyone from a distance (they can see a little inside if they walk right up to the window and your light is one). I used them on my bedroom windows to keep the light out in the daytime cause I worked at night. And they helped keep my room cooler in the summer too. One day my daughter looked out and saw a girl trying to get into everyone’s cars in the parking lot. she couldn’t tell that we could see her.
we done this on tour a lot, it is easiest option and you can actually throw a whole queen or double matress in there and it makes a whole comfy area, u just have to leave shoes off and not as much overhead but id say the comfort plus made it worthwhile.
I'm in an Scottsdale AZ Walmart parking lot watching this. It's Thanksgiving day 2020. In my Astro van snowbirding (don't think that's a word) got down to 44 degrees and I got pretty cold. But than, I'm 76 years old.

I love these kind of videos. So cozy! Inspired me to buy a sailing boat myself. After this virus times I will build solar panels and live by the ocean. Big fan from Stockholm ❤️☺️
I have made about 6 trips from Washington to Illinois and I never stayed in a hotel. I always just found a quiet place in some town along I90 and slept in the driver's seat. Being over 6 foot, it wasn't the most comfortable place to sleep, but I stayed warm for the most part, every once in a while I would get the heat on just enough to warm up and then off it went. Never had any problems
@@NewGoldStandard I wasnt referring to Tik Tok primarily, was more so pointing out the "does anyone else's OCD go off" part. I have a pet peeve when people claim they have OCD, esp over trivial occurrences. Legitimate cases of OCD are a nightmare and hell to those who truly suffer from it.
Boon docking is used when RV'ers are camping somewhere without hook-ups. No water line, no electricity = boon docking (dry camping). This is just truck or car camping here or "van dwelling".
You can also buy 12 volt light bulbs that fit into residential style light sockets. That's what my parents always used in their travel trailer when plugged into the truck for boondocking. Their trailer only had residential style light fixtures.
I read that you should have ventilation in cold temps because your exhale will create the condensation and make it colder with the added moisture in the air.
I finally got a job I can work remotely, this is definitely how I'm going to travel. You should get some reflective thermal insulation for the windows. Makes a world of difference. So does having just a tealight for warmth. It actually can keep a small space like that really warm.

Yea especially with the ramen packets or the macaroni ones too
"i liked the part where you did that thing that literally every person does"
i liked the part where he breathed. i felt that.
The cot is a great idea. When I was in the military I was forced to sleep on the cold floor of a truck mounted repair shelter. Even with a foam pad and sleeping bag I could feel the cold coming up from the floor. It was the most miserable night of my life. I don't just dislike the cold I hate it.
yeah the military sure treat you well. roll tide amirite.
Watched this video from my truck outside of Walmart.
Same here
Same here! Lmao 😂
Same here !😂
I upgraded to the airport 😂.
It's just past 4am and I'm hunkered down watching Steve hunker down.
This would be a great video for someone seeking a temporary or emerging emergency situation and owning a pickup with a cap. Great to show minimalist accomplishment. Very simple. Thanks.
After watching this it makes me want to go "hunker down" in my truck too....
Victoria Demico Aa Do it! It'll be fun!
I wanna go hunker down in my Tacoma now lol
It looks like this guy has a nice 8 foot truck bed for his set up. Can you imagine if he had a 5 foot bed? Forget that noise. Haha
@@MVolta09 i
With an eightball and a cheap hooker.
IF you are going to cook in the truck, get a Carbon Monoxide alarm/ sensor. That kills lots of people annually.
He does watch more of his videos.
Or a hot plate
Dennis Saunders what about the breathing air? Is there enough air to spend the night?
Propane heaters are what kill.
People sleep with them on all night.
@@sentientcurse9303 not with the buddy heaters, they give out very little carbon monoxide
There's just something comforting about these videos.
I do this when I go to parties with my friends. I have a cot in the bed of my truck and a heavy sleeping bag. Then go to sleep once im done for the night.
Pro-gamer move damn
@@cat19649 yessir lost plenty of friends who didn't have anyone to call and decided to drive home drunk. It's best to camp it out
Add a remote car starter to your truck.
He got a gas burner. Put water in a pot. Done
I wouldnt trust the exhaust to not get into the cap, not like the bed of trucks are air tight, or the bed itself for that matter. The beds of trucks are separate from the cabin, and not sealed off, not meant to be, by design water and stuff has to drain from them when it rains and stuff.
I still can't get over you having that jacket! STILL having that jacket. I've still got mine too!
Started with a 2004 Ford Ranger Supercab I had already paid off, I added a Leer Midrise pickup shell with sliding tinted windows (ventilation)
, and an insulated pickup bed liner.
Watching in 2023, a lot of water under the damn for Steve since this was videoed. Some good times and some unimaginable horrible times. I doubt that when Steve made this he had any idea how huge his channel would become. Thanks for all the entertainment my friend.
Watching this from my minivan outside a safeway 2000 miles from my hometown. Shit's lit, man.
Man it's awesome seeing you go from boondocking and loving it, to having an apartment and still getting a kick out of it, and now you have all that land and a bus. Lol you're the man Steve!
I 💖💖💖 it....
I grew up camping like that...and there was 4 children ...mom and dad and the dog.....amazing how much one can live without !!!
❤
Adding a little reflective thermo-material to the windows would not only do wonders for insulation but it would increase your stealth substantially. I always enjoy your content, thanks!
Hell my wife and I lived in the van in walmart parking lot for 2 weeks last summer and bathed in the river lol we had a good time
Scrolled down and nothing made me happier than to see Johny still responding and still getting out into nature
First one I ever saw of his show. I was hooked from there.
It's been a year and I am watching this again.
I enjoy watching this guy's videos. I envy his attitude of following his heart with whatever he decides or wants to do, regardless.
Wonderful to have so many great old videos. My thoughts for you and everyone mourning together.
I’m hunkering down in my eighteen wheeler sleeper while watching this I made noodles in my microwave it was good,
What type of truck do you have
Tony Eccles worse comes to worse I’d get my CDL and become a ft driver. Be great to see the whole country for free and get paid for it😀
When I see eighteen wheelers stuck on a snowy highway with all the other motorist stuck in their cars, I think: These drivers are well set to stay warm and cozy in their sleepers.
Thanks keep on camping / boondocking when
And wherever you can
I like this better then anything else out there...this isn't one of those " I only spent 14k on the hole thing " kind of crap this is a hey I've got $60 and what to go camping....love the video keep em coming 😁

Slept in my trucks camper froze my ass off a lot but loved it!!
Steve you are the man!! You make great content and I’m always ready for that step 2 cheers!!!
This is an oldie but a goodie. Tonight I just set up my boondock setup for a weekend helping a friend work on his property. Love these videos.
Take a shot every time he says “hunker down”.

I feel like we all knew someone like Steve in school and never knew what happened to the guy. For some reason watching Steve makes me happy for that reason

I'm so excited to watch these older camping with Steve video's again!! FUN!!
when you opened up the back window i was surprised how cosy it looks!
Never forget the joy of the journey Steve. We miss you,and are praying for your recovery
So grateful you've layed off the habit of smacking in the beginning of every sentence in newer videos!
Haha I had a lozenge in my mouth for a sore throat, didn’t make that mistake again!
hey Steve, thanks for the vid, was cool to see you still have the passion for the boon docking action, there's something primal and magic about this.
At a Walmart watching this video as I hunker down for the night in my own truck. Still looking for a used camper shell that fits my needs.
Build one
still gets me how much steve matured in this video from the last one, so good to watch.
People who don’t camp will never I stand why this is so much fun, and fun to watch, how many times have all of us been at work and just been like man, I wana go camp , by myself, and just be at peace
The Internet is a strange place. I did not think I had a fellow catholic down-hunkerer on this planet. God bless you !
I watch while snuggled down under my duvet, so therapeutic. Thankyou so much .
The UA-cam algorithm never fails to amaze me. The landscaping fabric is honestly such a good idea.

This is awesome when I go skiing my dad drives while I'm in the back and I put my backpack on the seats and I bring my blankie and I sleep back there and if we are at a food stop he wakes me up and I will eat. I love camping out in the car it is really fun.
Same thing ,I even go skiing to
What kind of blankie do you have
belemacninja 😂 hey I have a travel blankie but I use it for snowboarding.
Reed Rowan sounds like you got a decent dad. Be thankful.
Louie it's not skin color it's called having a job. Nothing is free got to work. Even white people.
That's why he parked it near the burger king. No one's gonna smell his wood stove over the grease stink of fast food deep fryers!
dat stanky meat
And it's probably the assistant manager's home until that next big promotion that still hasn't come
Actually I like a flame broiled Whopper from time to time.
For safety though, you should use electric stove instead.
burger king is one of few places that flame broil their meat and there is a smoke stack with strong grilled meat smell. if you've ever been close to a burger king then you would known that. there is no place on earth where you smell fryer oil smell like you are saying.
my point is that your comment is fucking stupid. thank you.
These videos get me by in winter, makes me look forward to camping and fishing in the summer.
I only recently discovered your channel and I've been watching ever since. You've got such a positive spirit and I love your delivery and sense of humor. On occasion, It's so deadpan.
Over 2M views right on Steve. Keep it going this content is the best.
I'm in an Scottsdale AZ Walmart parking lot watching this. It's Thanksgiving day 2020.
In my Astro van snowbirding (don't think that's a word) got down to 44 degrees and I got pretty cold. But than, I'm 76 years old.
You're well over twice my age but you're living life well over twice as much as me. You're an inspiration. :)
Also, I think what you were doing is called twitching, I don't know why. I know it's been a year but I hope you're still hale and hearty. 😁
Nice to see the latest version of boondocking with Steve. Well done. Sooke is proud of you.
Thanks! Say hello to everyone for me!
I love these kind of videos. So cozy! Inspired me to buy a sailing boat myself. After this virus times I will build solar panels and live by the ocean.
Big fan from Stockholm ❤️☺️
And now my boy has a bus, we are proud of youuuuuuuuu
You should use reflectix for insulation, it'll help keep your cab warmer and you'll need less light because it's reflective.
This dudes channel is awesome-hes always mixing it up and doing varied types of camping-i love it.
Did anyone else's OCD go off when he left a bit of tuna in the can or am I really crazy?
Davis Horowitz Yep. That’s totally normal, though.
Yes!
Yeah, only that's not OCD, you sound like a tik tok millennial, respectfully.
@@b.c.7741 Respectfully, I believe you're thinking of zoomers. Speaking as a millennial, I've never used Tik Tok.
Boondocking is a new one. Seattle is full of them. without the truck.
Same here in Baltimore...though some roll around here with a shopping cart RV...
Thanks for the Democratic party for making it happen.
I know but u save a lot of money my freand saved enough to buy his house it's paid off in one day
BeeFriendlyApiary where I live their RVs are made out of cardboard boxes
Boon docking is used when RV'ers are camping somewhere without hook-ups. No water line, no electricity = boon docking (dry camping). This is just truck or car camping here or "van dwelling".
Only cook like this in an emergency. Like making a UA-cam video. God bless you Steve! 😂 love the laughs and solid advice. Love your shows!
I'm hunkering down as I watch this.
About cooking: "ONLY do this in an emergency."
Guy: *lights stove*
You can also buy 12 volt light bulbs that fit into residential style light sockets. That's what my parents always used in their travel trailer when plugged into the truck for boondocking. Their trailer only had residential style light fixtures.
I slept in my suburban in a cenetary for 30 days while on vacation in northern michigan because of this channel. The best!!!
Great video! Not to be weird but you’d be an awesome voiceover actor. Your voice is really pleasant to listen to! 🎧👍🏽☮️
That looks so comfy
I agree.
