    Can't thank you enough for this video series Greg! Excellent detail and really well delivered. Your van is amazing and mine is coming along much better than it would have as a direct result of your efforts on youtube. I think you might well have bumped up the sales of the companies that supplied your parts by a significant sum of cash too :) I've certainly used most of them! All the best for the European tour - you've both earned it!

      Hi Bob, I’m really pleased that it has been useful to you as it’s done it’s job. We have been fortunate to work with a few very good companies on this project and I hope they too appreciate the hard work put in. I’m definitely looking forward to enjoying it now.
      Good luck with your build. 👍🏼

    I don't live in the UK so this topic does not apply to me. However, after watching so many of your other videos I simply could not just skip over it. I've got to say that you are a natural teacher. I find that you have the knack of making what could be dry material, engaging and it seems you make all the relevant points and give good reasons or explanations for them. I'm glad to have found your channel. Thank you for all you've done to share and teach.

    ...and here we are dear Greg, in 2024, 1st of February, sending off yet another application for 'change of class' to our 2015 Sprinter. This is our third attempt. First time, we were point-blank refused, the second time, using the exact same pics, we got a re-class, BUT...as a 'Van with Side Windows, meaning they have approved the interior. Now on our third attempt. For good measure, we have taken a pic of the rear with our bicycle strapped to it, rather than it being inside. We have had Police Officers agree that they see it as a Campervan, those previous myopic peeps in DVLA, don't seem to have the same ocular clarity...We can only hope that this time, we get twenty-twenty vision ...fingers crossed. Thanks for all your videos which helped us when we converted in 2020. :)

    Another video full of information Greg...it’s getting so close to that trip I can almost smell the croissants!!…
    With all the documents you sent to the DVLA, it’s advisable to send the insurance companies the same if not more....like you said, insurance companies will try and find the slightest thing to not pay you if you need to claim...personal equipment like cameras etc is best to write down where you bought them, how much and images of serial numbers etc, be up front with the information and they can’t look to get out of paying if needed....
    It’s been a fantastic series Greg, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it all... well done my friend, now go and enjoy 👍🏼😊😉

      Greg Virgoe I lost out on a camera once because the shop closed down and I didn’t have the receipt anymore...barstewards dug their nails in and wouldn’t pay out 😡🤬😡 why do we pay high prices with insurance and they argue and refuse to pay out?!?……5 years paying into their company...I was fuming 🤬🤬

    I've really enjoyed watching your build videos,Greg,great attention to detail has made a really good Van.I'm a motorhome owner since my retirement as an international haulier a few years back,and now travel Europe for most of the year.Hope you and your wife enjoy your "gap year" travelling the continent,it will be a learning curve for a few weeks,you soon know that the important things are deisol,water,Gas and food! try to never run out of either and you'll be fine!Good luck with your journey and look forward to seeing your progress on video,I'm still working through of resvisiting places in Europe where I worked with the lorry,but never had chance to explore.Regards Paul

      Hi,Greg,I don't know about experienced,just old! I started driving in Europe in the early '70s travelling from UK to the Middle East and worked on international haulage until 2014 and have seen many changes in that time.I also travelled in a VW combo van with my family from the late '70s.I'm sure,having watched your build videos that you have spent time planning your trip and route options.Now there are many internet sites and apps for camping spots and Aires which give members feedback and site locations which I find very useful as well as many UA-cam channels from travellers like ourselves.I'm sure you'll have your toolbox with you when you travel for any enroute "modifications" to the van!.I now have a 2016 Fiat based m.home which I bought 2 years ago,after the first trip in it I came home and fitted another large roof vent above the fixed bed,and when at home in Devon,I am constantly changing things on the van,solar panel fitted,extra leisure battery, inverter,window and door locks(security important,both when sleeping and when parked up for sight seeing)Just back from trip to Switzerland and N.Italy I'fitted all-round camera system and about to upgrade water tanks and pump.I' a great believer in travelling in comfort,and with today's technology it can be easy,if expensive! to live in the van in a civilised many wherever you are.I home for family Christmas,now,but still planning next trip in January to Spain and the Pyrenees.Life's too short to spend it in one place,good luck enjoy.Paul

    Nice video - very clear. Having done this a few times now I've had no issues, just make sure the pics are really clear and cover everything on the list. On one van they did ask for it to be inspected at the local DVLA office, but that may have been because it was very local to us. I'm sure they wouldn't make you travel any distance if you have good clear photos.

    • @GregVirgoe
      @GregVirgoe  6 років тому

      They have got rid of most of the DVLA offices now and everything is done online or by post.
      I can't move it until the V5 comes back and I can get it MOT'd and Taxed anyway :D
      With all the info I have given them I cannot see any problems, I hope.

    Great explanation and guide video Greg 👍🏼 One thing I found was my insurance also became a problem as the company who insured my van didn’t offer campervan insurance once I’d changed the logbook. It ended up costing me far more to insure as it wasn’t a recognised company who’d converted it.

    • @GregVirgoe
      @GregVirgoe  6 років тому +1

      I had to change too as AXA van insurance would not cover me for a motorhome.I guess they think that if you have done a self-build they view it as a bit more risk than a professional build? I don't know.
      My insurance wasn't much cheaper at all really so for me it wasn't a major saving.

      @@GregVirgoe Thank you so much, Greg I will look into this. The 2016 Sprinter van is still in my drive - untouched for now as I live in Greater London and the Mayor had just announced the new ULEZ zone right after my purchase. It's Eu5 so it should be scrapped... Bit devastated, to say the least. Not sure anymore if it is worth converting. Such is life.... Again thanks for everything and I hope you have an amazing Christmas❣

    I got insurance that had the conversion built in, so they new it was a panel van and I was required to convert it within six months. That worked out well for me.

    • @GregVirgoe
      @GregVirgoe  6 років тому +2

      6 months is a good amount of time, AXA only gave me 90days which considering I was working full time was nothing, which is why we decided to take it off the road all together and declared it SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification)

    • @michaell8835

      I just got my Crafter, and arranged insurance via Flux Direct, the policy is with Trinity. The policy allows the full 12 months to convert, and the option to renew with the same arrangement, and includes 90 day western European cover. Price was reasonable too, and the time frame takes away any pressure to rush the build. Suited me perfectly.

    Once again Greg, thanks for the clear straightforward advice. I’ve been fitting the 12v electrics today, split charger & controller now fitted and we’re almost sorted with plumbing and heating connections. The time to advise DVLA of the changes is fast approaching and hopefully we’ll meet all the requirements ready for our trip to Europe in the New Year. It’s surprised me just how much work goes into a van conversion and your videos have certainly helped me a great deal. Thanks for all your help.

    Hey Greg.
    Well sorted video of the process involved for getting the van changed over.
    I realise this vid is about a year old now, but something I would like to add regarding my change over.
    I converted a Transit jumbo 17seater minibus in 2017.
    This had a weight of over 3.5 tons (4.2 i think) I would need it down graded to 3.5t because of licencing issues when I reach 70 in a couple of years.
    At the time I was paying £165 road tax (RFL) if I remember correctly.
    I thought it was going to be registered as a PLG and RFL cost £260
    When I was sorting it all out and getting the weight certificate they came back to me and told me the RFL would be £570 per year.......WTF!!!!!!!
    Naturally i wasn't going to wear that!!.
    As i have a house in France, and am now retired
    I decided to instead export it to France and get it changed over here.
    Yes it was difficult and time consuming, it was also expensive, but NOT £570 expensive.
    AND over here there is no road fund licence plus MOT,s only every other year.
    Win,Win in my mind. ( DVLA olo you)
    Hope to see you on the road some time.
    All the best CVD

    Greg, I'm having an absolute nightmare with DVLA, DVSA and Insurance companies, I'm considering giving up the project altogether. I have a Sprinter 516 MWB, which I bought straight from the Police. It's a twin rear axle and rated 5000kg. Firstly, no class 4 MOT stations would do the MOT, claiming I had to get it MOTd at a proper lorry station. I had to pre-book it 30 days in advance with an HGV MOT station, which cost me £140. Baring in mind this was a garage which had the DVSA MOT guys partnered up within their garage's vicinity. They had claimed that they were only responsible for the booking and not for doing the MOT itself.
    So I arrive on the day to be told by the actual DVSA guty that he was not able to do it as it was previously MOTd by the police as a class 4, a privilege available to the Police only, and not to members of the public. I was told to get it rebooked once I had re-registered it as an HGV, get it MOTd and then re-apply for it to be downrated to a class 4. It would have been rude not to kick off at this stage. The garage man (who I had paid £140) then had quiet words with the (DVSA) MOT man, came back and said he'll do the MOT as a class 4 and said that I needed to convert it following the registration process which you've illustrated beautifully and simply in your video above. Anyway, if this was not enough to do a man's nut in?
    I have insurance companies now telling me they have no record showing it as a 516 model, which is quite apparent from the comparison sites I get quotes from. I do an online (the van insurer) quote and I am forced to accept the highest model they have which is a 316. Following this I go through the telephone stage in the quotation process by various agencies/ brokers, this takes time. Everything just halts to a standstill, the insurance guys are thinking we've just wasted our time here, and are probably not going to get a penny for all the work we've just put in, and i am left there with no result. This process has been repeated many times.
    Mate, you are probably thinking, so what do you not need to help me with, if anything at all, and may be left without knowing where to begin. I just need someone with the right knowledge or simply need a bit of direction, and tell me what you would do in this situation. If you could guide us a little this would be much appreciated. Cheers mate!

    • @GregVirgoe
      @GregVirgoe  5 років тому +3

      Ok, let me just clarify the relevant MOT classes first.
      Class 4 is for Motor Caravans and Light Good Vehicles up to 3000kg
      Class 7 is for Light Good Vehicles between 3000kg up to 3500kg
      Generally, a vehicle over 3500kg would require an HGV test. However....
      If your van conversion has its body type amended to Motor Caravan it can be tested as Class IV regardless of weight
      so long as it does not carry goods and you declare that before testing
      This is an extremely useful article and I suggest getting your body type changed if not done so already and find a friendly MOT test centre :D

    • @bornnomad8045

      Sorry, I did mention that '...the man, came back and said he'll do the MOT as a class 4 and said that I needed to convert it following the registration process...', but did not tell you that I had taken him up upon the offer. So yes I now have MOT.
      My greatest task and predicament lies with the insurance class or type, what I explained in the latter part of my comment to you Greg. Thanks!

    • @GregVirgoe
      @GregVirgoe  5 років тому +1

      You need to go to an insurance company that deals with modified vehicles.
      Like Adrian Flux for example or similar

    • @bornnomad8045
      @bornnomad8045 5 років тому +2

      Greg Virgoe yep found them. By the way that article was POWERFUL! Full of twists and turns! Loved the legal debate between Uk motor homes and the department of transport. Surely, I knowing what I know now I have a case to get that £140 refunded as they have in effect charged me for an HGV MOT where I was given a class 4 MOT? the cheek of the man who had me believe he was giving me a squeeze by not charging me for it, helping me out... For me especially mate, it was kind of a happy ending! Cheers!

      @matthewjenkins1161 5 років тому

      @@bornnomad8045 You may also want to think about having the Gross Vehicle Weight downgraded to 3500kg.
      Then anyone can drive it on a full UK driving licence, which opens up your market if you sell in future.
      Not an issue to those like myself with a pre-1997 licence, but those who passed 1997 on must take an additional test.
      If you are having issues with the model number, pop in for a friendly chat with a Mercedes van dealership and your VIN number. They may be able to put something in writing for a small fee that could smooth the path with DVLA and any insurers.

    Fab informative video as always Greg! I've seen some DVLA requests come back (self build campervan page on Facebook) stating it doesn't look like a motor caravan on the outside so they've had to add graphics to make it look less like a panel van with windows. Hopefully yours passes without a hitch 😎👍🏻

    I've read loads of anecdotes on the Web about van conversions going through this process, and even though they ticked off every requirement and included photos, the dvla refused to reclassify as a motor caravan, stating that it's mostly what it looks like externally and if it still mostly looks like a panel van then it still is one (as far as descriptions that the police may go by) - they would only reclassify as a panel van with windows. Hopefully they're less hostile these days! Best of luck.

    • @GregVirgoe
      @GregVirgoe  4 роки тому

      No, you can do it without the receipts however the process now is much harder with more external criteria to comply with. please check the latest info on the government website, it now has to look very much like a camper from the outside.

    Hi Greg Q. A friend of mine is currently converting his Merc (very similar spec to yours as it goes) and he is now looking to alter the vehicle classification also. In addition to the points you have made here, he has also been told he needs to add 2 different colour stripes down the side “so other road users can clearly tell it is a camper”. This seems bonkers and yet another red tape waste of time....have you come across this also? Ps as a building contractor experienced in most trades I have to say I cannot fault a single piece of your work here. From the spec, application, approach and super clear tutorials. First class mate 👍🏻

    • @GregVirgoe
      @GregVirgoe  6 років тому +1

      It was the DVLA standpoint that it needs to look like a camper from the outside.
      I'm sure I have read an article somewhere recently that said they have relaxed that ruling.
      Not all manufacturer's factory built campers (VW for instance) have fancy graphics on the side.

      @@GregVirgoe As far as I can see looking at some reviews of factory panel van conversions not all of the have a 6'/1.8m bed and at least one had a free standing table which was touted as being able to be used outside the van (it looked like a regular picnic table) Of course the DVLA have to come up with some standard where self builds are concerned so in the end you just have to comply. As for decals/stripes, I purchased a set but I'll only fit them if required, hopefully 2 x 100w solar panels on the roof will be sufficient to make it look like a campervan rather than a commercial vehicle.

    Just found your series, this is a great guide, however DVLA don't always agree to change the V5.
    I converted a Vivaro a couple of years ago, everything by the book but DVLA refused my application saying that if the police where following the van it still looks like a panel van! even though I had a rear door mounted spare wheel, definitely not a normal panel van look.
    I guess it just depends if you get the DVLA jobs worth on the day or not!

I’m having a tracker fitted to my van and we have a dash cam to record when driving. Leave curtains drawn so people can see it’s a camper bit leave nothing out on display. That’s what I’m going with anyway. 😀

We've bolted in 4 seat belts into the frame of the van for the kids with rivnuts etc. what will this mean if they refuse the change? Will it be illegal to allow the kids to drive in the back? What would this failure of change of use mean for us? Also, we've recycled a lot of materials from the local tip. So we only have receipts for the solar panel equipment , the new mattress and curtain fabric, bought secondhand from eBay. Can you help? Kind Regards. Sara

As the vehicle cannot be identified externally as a motor caravan the body type can't be changed." Hi Greg, I’ve been binge watching your videos, great stuff and love your attention to detail.
    Do you do a video on the insurance side of things. Not sure if I can use a van during conversion on a panel van policy or not.

    Hello Greg just a quick question about the invoices that you sent to the DVLA did You receive them back in the post, did you send the actual invoices or did you send them copies?. Many thanks

    Could you update this video as I'm being told the UK laws have now changed and only factory fitted high top vans can be changed at DVLA not pop top vans.

    You really are quickly becoming my go-to on all things campervan, Greg! Thank you!
    Can I infer that I will not be able to register my panel van as a motor caravan because I am not installing windows on the side (I will install a skylight on the roof to let light in)? And therefore I won't be able to benefit from cheaper insurance?
    Thanks, Greg!!

    Hi Greg, we are mid build and was looking into the delay /insurance for when our build is complete. Can I just ask dud you have any problems regarding the windows you have the same as us one on each side of the can but reading the delay document it states two windows minimum on at least one side not including the cab windows. We want to get this right as we are at the stage we could add one if we had to but it would change our design so would rather not if possible. Any advice greatly appreciated. Lisa n mick

      Hello, the requirements have changed since this video was filmed and now a lot more things are required and they are a lot more strict about how the vehicle must look. Two on one side is the latest requirement.

      I don’t recall having to do that. Most tax these days is calculated by emission so I wouldn’t have thought that would change? 🤔

    Greg i hope you are going to fit some nice wheels and some nice graphics to the outside this would be nice to see.

      Hi, new wheels are not in the budget but I am having the steel ones painted black.
      The van is booked in next April for the exterior, but that's as much as I can say right now.
      All will be revealed at Camp Quirky next year and of course, there will be a video to follow.

    Hiya Greg! Thanks for the most informative video. Really appreciate this. Subscribed and thumbs'ed up. :) I do have a question though; You mention about the bed needing to be 6ft or 1800mm's long? Where did you get this figure from as all I can see on gov's recommendations is that it needs to be fixed etc.

      Joshua Parris some of the tulles have been amended since I created this video. It was 6ft at the time this was filmed. Pleased check the latest requirements. 😃

      I just realised this is an older version. They have updated recently only to make things seem more confusing this time. Sorry for the dumb question!

    Hi Greg do you think it would be cheaper at a cost of 650 to buy a kitchen pob and wardrobe than it would to build it
