I assume you're talking about MakeMKV... I misspoke when I said MakeMKV is open source; it is not. It is free to use while it is in beta as long as you have the current beta key. Make MKV has been "in beta" for a number of years now and doesn't appear it will ever advance beyond that. Meaning it will probably always be free to use; you just have to go to their forum for the updated beta key every couple of months. Here's a link to the current beta key www.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1053 All you have to do is open MakeMKV click on 'Help' and then 'Register' and copy the beta key into the field that says 'Enter Registration Code' and you should be good to go. If that doesn't work, uninstall MakeMKV, download the installer from their website put in the key and you should be good. Show less
Make MKV updates every month or so - simply go to the MKV webpage and download the latest version.... You may have to uninstall the current version from your computer before installing the new version....
Here's how I figure out which track I need to rip. 1. Open the DVD using the VLC media player. 2. Go through the DVD's navigation to start playing the movie 3. Once the movie is playing, go to Playback->Title in the VLC menu and you will see which track is being currently played.
MakeMKV - When you choose the file to copy, expand the check mark, there you can deselect/select languages, choose subtitles also decide on what type of soundtrack like stereo, Dolby digital etc. I find this helpful because I choose to keep DD, 7.1 SURROUND and sometimes stereo depending. Also, I remove alternate audio and languages like french etc. Doing this will reduce the file size from say 30 gigs to maybe 25 gigs or more.
oh that was going to be my question: I need subtitles. I know how to edit them, add a different sub source into handbrake etc, but I couldn't figure out how to rip my blurays. Do you know if MakeMKV encodes the subs into the file or does it have a separate sub file? I'd love a separate file as I can correct the spelling on the subs before going to handbrake. I get handbrake to soft code my subs. Or I just use MKV toolnix GUI to add the subs and encode to MKV. They do a much better job to encode from mp4 to MKV than handbrake and they do it within minutes.
thank you so much. I did this last night and it does soft-code the subs (rather than a separate file). I could even see the different languages in the options, so I could uncheck the ones I won't need. Thank you so much for this information. I am surprised it is taking so long for handbrake to encode the MKV file. So far, it's at 10 hours with 1 (est.) more hour to go for handbrake! I can't watch movies without the subs, so this is huge for me. Cheers!
@@bccabernet 11 hours for one file in Handbrake? It sounds like you're using a setting that your PC can't really handle and/or you were using other programs taking away memory or you were potentially even overheating your PC. Or were you trying to encode a 4K movie?
I have been watching tutorials on how to use MakeMKV and Handbrake to rip DVDs & Blu-rays. Your video is the best. Your instructions were easy to understand for a newbie and you didn't skip any steps. You also made the screen captures nice and large, so I could see exactly what the software interface was going to look like. Many thanks. I feel like I'm ready to rip.
Honestly surprised it works. Cant complain my first movie I got on my hard drive was jumanji and I was able to use movies and tv that was already on my laptop and didnt even need vlc, even though I already have it for other things. Subtitles and audio were there and it was super simple. Thanks! Didint realize it was that easy to put my DVD's on my laptop!
I am finally getting around to turning my dvd collection into digital copy collection. had too many older computers laying around. Used 2 750GB drives from a sonicwall server, put them in a Supermicro pc dumped by a building maintenance shop. Listened to your video ,installed Plex, and I away I go. Thanks for your informative video, it was a great help.
Tip - section 5. To find out which title you need to select, play the movie in VLC, click the Playback menu, the move the cursor to Title. It will be highlighted which title is currently playing. Same for chapter too.
This is what I've been looking for. Been thinking about aggregating my small collection into one place so I can watch it when I want with ease. Thanks!!!
I use the old DVD shrink freeware from Germany about the 2001. This before smartphones or streaming which I jokingly called dreaming at the time and used convert to cell phone size by UA-cam in those years.I was able to convert my favorites From Star Wars to life-force to caddy shack to eventually smartphone. To this day I still have the copies 20 years on. I'm 51 now and just use process for fair use copy for backup. DVD shrink freeware that is awesome in its being able to still be used while other software died like a dodo bird. With new operating systems not comparable. I'm talking to much but I like the info and the fact you can still do this all these years later. Keep it up. Since my stroke 2015 has changed my priorities and focus. Have only been able work on DVD lately. 😎😎
Haven't ripped any media in years , doing this recently to put all my media into Plex , this video helped allot. Wish handbreak existed in 2002 thanks allot
2002 here was a software I forget that broke the codes of disks and then allowed you to create images and various files. It's not new, 2002 was the yr when I use to rip the crap out of games I'd buy and return too. But torrents then were just as effective. Now though you want to create a good quality library on Plex I agree.
Thanks for the tutorial, I was wondering what the fastest and easiest way to rip was today. I haven't been ripping since back in the day with DVD decrypter
If you want to really speed things up you should check out this video I made last month. GPU encoding is pretty sweet. :) ua-cam.com/video/gQV5RX2YUiY/v-deo.html
Mark, So glad I landed on your channel. Let me say way back in the 90"s I was ripping DVD movies using DVD ripper pro. (That company may or may not still be operating?) I now have over 500+ dvd titles in my collection all unencrypted for my private use. Fast forward to today. I plan on copying these DVD's to a NAS using PLEX server to enjoy anywhere. You video was very informative & I have bookmarked for further reference.
For the title selections I will say if you're ripping a movie go with the largest file size. if it's a TV show and you want to have them individual episodes select all the title except for the largest one or else you're going to have all the episodes in one video. This works for me.
The Handbrake setting HQ 1080p30 Surround will change the frame rate of the movie. Select a frame rate of 23.976 for 99.9% of movies to maintain the frame rate as intended.
barriusaquarius hq 1080p 30 Surround profile will encode the movie to maximum 30 fps. If your movie that you want to encode has 23.976 fps than the encoded movie will also have 23.976. See handbrake documentation. It encodes up to 30 fps, so if original file has less fps the resulting file will have the same
Great How-to Video!! Odd as it may seem in today's world, inquiring minds would like to know if you could extract the main title only from a DVD9 movie and burn it back to a DVD5 disc in DVD format for use on an older stand-alone DVD player? In my "wish list" also might be to use no more compression than is necessary to fit the extracted title on the DVD5 disc for any selected audio and video settings. And of course, using free software would be a plus. Seems like long ago the combo of DVD Decrypter & DVD Shrink provided at least some of that capability by first decoding to a hard drive and then shrinking and burning to a DVD5 disc.
If you’re using handbrake, find the original frame rate or your movie or show, most movies run at 23-24 FPS, Handbrake automatically defaults to 30 frames which is incorrect for movies and films, 30 is what they film TV shows in, but make sure you change the frame rate to match what your source was originally encoded in for best results!
Just an FYI if one has anydvd it is not necessary to rip from anydvd before using handbrake. Handbrake will use the decryption of anydvd and one can rip directly from the blu-ray.
Does anyone know how to make DVDs from MKV files? But I need to choose the subtitle/ audio inside the MKV file or add an external one and make it "choosable" and not glued to the picture. Thanks.
Good video. I haven’t converted any BluRay discs but do standard backups of all my movies and I use DVDFab, I have no need for any other program, it isn’t free however the digital converter section costs about $75.00 but is worth it if you have a dvd library to backup.

You are the Genesis of my success with my new Blu-Ray drive! Two weeks ago I bought the first Blu-Ray drive that I have ever bought for my computer! To my shock, I was not able to play my Blu-Ray movies in the drive! I knew that the drive was working, I just had to find out why I could not play my Blu-Ray movies. Within three days of researching the problem, I ran across your video here !! It set me on the right track of fixing my problem. I can now make high quality copies of my Blu-Ray disk, that will play on any media player. That is great, but I still wanted the ability to play my Blu-ray movies from the disk in the drive. After doing some more research, I found out how to tweak the VLC media player to play my Blu-Ray movies from the disk in the drive. So I did the tweaks of the VLC Media player, and it Failed !! But then this morning, a thought came to my head from something that I had read in a Reddit forum, that after you do the tweaks of the VLC media player, to enable Anydisk, which I had not done. So I enabled Anydisk and opened the VLC Media player to start my Blu-Ray movie, and SUCCESS, my movie was playing from my new Blu-Ray drive !! I did not provide all the details of my success here, but you are the MAJOR reason for my success !! At best, I am a computer novice !! So if I can do it, then anyone can do it with some research and study !! But I owe you ((( ALL ))) the THANKS for my success !! THANK YOU !!!
5:16 Wrong, you need to open up the file first to select subtitle and audio track / language options. MKVs are not only lossless, they can also preserve the chapters, audio tracks and subtitles available on the disk. This is very important when you are showing movies to older relatives whose hearing is failing. Some movies are better in a foreign language with subtitles than a dubbed version due to annoying voice actors who think they are being clever. And finally, movies, such as "Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole" have such thick accents that you need the subtitles to enjoy the movie (it is a far better movie with subtitles than without). In addition, I remove the "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" text. If you leave it in, even if you change the file name, it remains embedded in the file. This can cause uncontrollable consequences as some programs will use meta-data in preference to the file name. To fix the problem, you may need to re-copy the disk. I just spent two years converting my movies to MKV digital, and had spent a year and a half converting my movies to MP4 before deciding that having no artifacts as well as keeping audio, chapters and subtitles intact was worth starting over. You should also name your movie and TV Shows in a standard format for Plex or Kodi. Filebot is well worth learning to use for TV Shows. Just use the MovieDB for the correct name: Legend of the Guardians The Owls of Ga'Hoole (2010) so that software, such as Plex, can automatically find the movie using the MovieDb agent.
Another program that is useful for DVD's is DVD shrink. it is useful when ripping Anime, for you can strip the languages you do not want before converting to MP4, for sometimes Japanese ends up being the default.
I really appreciate this video although after I use Handbreak Plex doesn't seem to be able to find my movie, any suggestions? Other movies I ripped are M4V files even after Handbreaking them its just one movie that isn't, the one movie just showes up as file
I have a problem with make mkv I have certain blu rays with tracks this tutorial helped on so many other dvds and blu rays on my certain ones I’d like to do is keep all the tracks in to one file ... how do I do this
Hi Brian, great video! I'm looking for a program that can convert music dvd's and blurays into MKV files, while maintaining the chapters so when I play the mkv-file I can skip to the next song/chapter. Does such a program exist and if so, what is it? Hope you can help me out.
Wish I had the time for my Bluray collection but it’s over 700 movies large. I did however rip my DVD collection as straight uncompressed mkv files or iso and play them on my libreelec imaged raspberry Pi 4.
i think you can ditch makeMKV and just use handbrake for coping your dvd . if the dvd is copy protected , you can tweak handbrake to ignore that. just google it.
Maraksot78, I have seen your tutorial its awesome , i have one question Marak ,i have maximum 400 dvds & i want to save all these on external hard drive ,which is best harddrive to save movies, my question is all standard DVD's can upscale to 720p to 4k ? . when dvd movie file copied on Harddisc, its VOB,BUP & IFO files.can we set this file into one file and attach movie picture titie of this folder so the folder look nice with movie picture.
I'm watching this video because I want to build a personal use non compressed HD digital movie collection, and without having to worry about the film being altered or losing access.
Hi Bluray external drive to rip bluray or anything lower (e.g DVD), what about 4k & 3D bluray ? will a normal Bluray external drive do the job or must it be 4K and 3D compatible?
Presets are good but you should ALWAYS keep the same frame rate as the movie, which is 24fp. By changing it to 30fps you are taking risk to end up with a jerky-lagging video.
Nice tutorial - one other reason to compress versus going all purist 1:1 copy - is the strain large files put on you network. Large files doesnt stream very well on older and /or bottlenecked networks. I get a lot of stuttering when streaming large files to my gen 1. Chromecast using plex. Cant really use it unless i kick the rest of the family of the wifi - an unpopular solution. Compressed movies do a lot better though :-)
I had never really considered this but it does make sense for older 10 and 100mbps network hardware. I have all gigabit hardware so this scenario didn't come to mind. Thanks so much for the comment and sharing this information. I just hope people will read the comments and see this. Cheer bro! Thanks for subscribing too btw. :)
Maraksot78, I have seen your tutorial its awesome You are my boss from today, i have one question Marak ,i have maximum 400 dvds & i want to save all these on external hard drive ,which is best harddrive to save movies, my question is all standard DVD's can upscale to 720p & 1080p ? kindly Reply .
Not sure if I missed it, but I have a Mac. Will this work with a Mac? Stuck in the house during COVID19 quarantine. Cleaning out my closets and ran across a bunch of movies. Please help.
Awesome vid!! Using makemkv will I be able to retain the audio such as Dolby Atmos or DTS or will that be lossed when I add to handbrake. I like the smaller size option to convert, but would like to remain true audio for my surround system
Thanks for checking out the video and for the question. Unfortunately I don't know the answer to that because I haven't really looked into that in depth. My primary reason for ripping all my DVD's and Blu-rays was to put them onto a portable Plex server my kids can stream from while we're on road trips. Since they're just watching them on tablets and since they're just kids I haven't given much thought to audio. I just looked it up and it appears MakeMKV can copy the Dolby Atmos tracks but I'm not sure if there's anything special you need to do before ripping a disc to do it. As for using Handbrake, I tried to find some info but I don't have a lot of time to look into it at the moment and the quick Google search I did just now on it didn't offer much help. Sorry I'm not much help in this regard. Perhaps this could be the topic of a future video. Best of luck to you. Cheers! :)
Great video. Thank you. I tried ripping my blu ray disk last night with MKV and the copy is great BUT there’s no audio or sound with it no matter what I use to play the file. I can hear the sound when playing the disk directly from my Pioneer external drive but there’s no sound been copied with the MakeMKV file. Do you know what my problem could be? Thank you for your help.
To answer your question it's just because I hadn't looked in depth into what needs to be done to allow Handbrake to rip a Blu-Ray. Since you mentioned it I decided to look and found you can copy the libmmbd64.dll file twice from MakeMKV into the HandBrake folder in Windows Explorer, rename them to libbdplus.dll and libaacs.dll and Handbrake can then rip Blu-Rays. I'm actually giving it a go right now as I'm typing this to you with NVEnc enabled as well (since I have an Nvidia Graphics card) to see how much this will simplify and speed up the process. Thanks for prompting me to dig a little deeper and learn some more. Thumbs up to you. :)
@@Maraksot78 Haha! I'm glad my question got you thinking! I wasn't sure if there was a quality aspect of MakeMKV that you preferred but since you're running the files through Handbrake I couldn't see how it would make much difference.. Hopefully it's a success for you and a time saver if anything :)
@@Maraksot78 Also, a quick tip I've figured out lately.. Rather than guessing the Video, Audio and Subtitle tracks before ripping I use my DVD player or VLC to play the movie then press the display button to see exactly which tracks are relevant.. You've probably already thought of that since this video was made though.
I actually haven't thought of that yet. Nice tip though. Thanks. Just as an update on how using Handbrake and Nvidia NVENC to rip and transcode went... It worked great. I did have to download another .dll file from VideoLAN.org to be able to rip DVD's also but once all that was done Handbrake rips discs great and then goes right into transcoding them. With NVENC enabled my RTX 2070 Super can encode a 2 hour 1080p blu-ray using the HQ 1080p30 Surround preset in about 20 minutes! I should probably specify it does take 15 or 20 minutes to rip the disk first and then another 20 to transcode. But 40-ish minutes for the whole process is pretty freakin' sweet. I'll take that over the way I was doing it before any day. New video is already in the works. XD lol
You're welcome. I'm actually working on a new video right now that should be done soon that teaches how to back up DVD's and blu-rays using just Handbrake and GPU encoding to speed up the encoding process A LOT! In this video it took me 20 minutes to rip a disk and then 2-ish hours to encode a movie. In the new video it still takes 20-ish minutes to rip the disk but using GPU encoding that 2 hour encode time has been reduced to just 20 minutes! :D
I'm just trying this for the first time. I started with MakeMKV and popped in my Blu-ray and it's been "Loading" for quite a few minutes with no screen changes. Should I give up and try the alternate method?
I'm finally doing this for the first time, I have a 5960x Haswell-E processor, CPU is at 100%. I set the priority to low. This isn't going to fry my CPU, is it? I'm watching my temps with Core Temp right now and my cores are at about under 70 Degrees C.
I like HQ 1080p 30 Surround because the quality is high enough that I don't notice a difference from the actual blu-ray and it compresses the files down to a level I'm happy with.
@@Maraksot78 question for you. So I just started doing this with your instructions. I have a bunch of movies on DVD, which I'm sure you're aware of is pre-Blu-ray. Are these movies 720p or 480? I went ahead and ripped 3 DVDs and set them to HD 720 on Handbrake, but would they be the same at 480? I'm reading a definite No on 1080p with DVDs, but no clear answer about 720p. Thanks.
this was explained very well thanks you know makemkv and Handbrake have a CLI and you could run a batch file to copy one after the other onto your hard drive or set up handbrake to encode after the copy. kind of like this makemkvcon64 mkv --decrypt --directio=true --minlength=2100 --cache 1024 -r disc:0 all "c:\copyfolder" for %a in ("c:\copyfolder*.mkv") do (handbrakecli -i "%~na.mkv -t 1 -o "%~na_.mkv" -f mkv --strict-anamorphic -e x264 -a 1 -E faac -6 dpl2 -R Auto -B 160 -D 1 -x b-adapt=2:rc-lookahead=50:bframes=2 --verbose=1) Now this isn't exact but I use a variation of it to rip my dvd's when I have more than just one to do.
Oh my god, I've been using MakeMKV for years and did not know you could right click and select "Unselect All." I once had a Blu-Ray disc that had so many individual tracks and was sitting there in pain unselecting each check box. I feel so dumb right now.
it's all good. I did the same thing several times before I figured it out. XD lol After doing it on a couple different discs I thought, "there has to be another way" so I tried right clicking just to see what would happen and I was overjoyed to see the unselect all option. :)
Thank you, I paid for a year of some dvd ripper. made things nice and easy but only ripped a couple dvd and let it run out. I just got 3 imported dvds and I didn't want to pay for another year or lifetime.
This is great, I essentially want to do rips, cause I have a lot of live concert dvds, and really just after a couple songs to be able to put on my phone. after MakeMKV taking to Handbrake I just choose the couple of songs(chapters) I want. Mainly I had another program that gave me an unusable file, so hearing I can still use handbrake to make it a clean mp4. That alone was helpful. I try using just handbrake before but the A/V never was synced. This has been doing just what I need it to do, may go back and rerip some stuff I had already done years ago the hard way.
@@Maraksot78 This was not first video I look up either, I found a couple of things this morning, and for whatever reason files were bad and didn't work. (One video had me with the MKV file but didn't mention it wont play normally, or what to do with it next) This was the video that actually work for me. I was so close to just paying the 30 bucks for the old program I had.
This was informative, thank you. I have 121 blue rays that I had bought before I went digital and like an idiot, I threw away the codes. Have almost 100 movies on VUDU/ultraviolet. Would like to convert my entire movie collection to digital but man the space even compressed is daunting. I have five binders almost full of disks, each holding 350 disks (not full had room to expand if I needed, but still a lot of movies). And that does not even count the TV shows I have on disk. Almost another 5 binders for them as well. I think I would need a could of ten terabyte drives for my collection. I shudder at that.
Ran across a minor issue using HandBrake. The majority of the files it compressed converted them into M4V files instead of MP4. This made said files unreadable/playable for my tv. I corrected it with VLC, but I should check through the settings next time. What's weird is HandBrake only converted 3 out of about 18 files to MP4
@@ValthorEldr no problem. I hope I'm not spreading mis-information. I haven't tried it myself but I did read that on a Handbrake forum when I found some of mine were coming out as m4v's. So far I haven't had any issues playing the m4v files so I haven't tried changing the file extension.
I followed instructions from many of your videos on the subject but I keep running into an issue where im getting Descriptive Audio overlayed on the movie and I can't get rid of it. Ive tried removing it in handbrake with no luck and every english only audio track in MakeMKV. How do you get rid of this? Its some feature for blind people that describes scenes when there is no lines being read by the actors. Its infuriating
Thank you for making this video, I have been using MakeMKV for like 3 or 4 years now. I learned something I didn't know. It never dawned on me to right-click on the file description window and to select unselect all. On DVD's it usually was no big deal to click the checkmarks for each file you didn't want to rip. But on Blu-Rays, some of them would have so many it was a pain in the butt to unselect so many. It makes me wonder what all else I don't know about MakeMKV. I have one problem I haven't figured out though. For some reason, the audio seems a little low on playback from Plex to my Roku's. I have to turn the volume up to watch them and then turn the volume back down when watching regular TV. I haven't tried using HandBreak yet since Roku can play MKV files in Plex with no problems.
Isn't there some sort of player you can purchase and either directly tranfer your DVD or bluray to digital or buy said movie digitally from some online store and download it on that device and have the sheer convenience as you would with streaming but without any compromises being made to picture quality and Audio? I'm tired of swapping discs, but i also hate the audio from streaming and the removal of shows that i like to watch every now and then. Sure you can buy movies from Prime Video, UA-cam etc but you're just unlocking a streaming movie that you can watch any time you want but with the same crappy audio and inferior picture quality.
I’ve been digitising my movie collection, used handbrake for all my DVDs with no issues. Now I’ve started using makemkv for Blu-ray , they playback fine on vlc player but as soon as I plug hard drive into tv the sound cracks on almost all Blu-ray movies but not tv series. Any ideas? I’m considering trying to compress them in handbrake, is there a way to do this into a smaller mkv?
A couple of years ago I got a gtx 1060 for gaming, and also wanted to use it for gpu transcoding. I took a while but I finally found the freeware Xmedia Recode and never looked back at any other trans-coder. Be sure to get it from the original web site, there are some cracked versions out there. Why would anyone want a cracked version of freeware????
Can't Handbrake be used for all the steps? Why would you need MakeMKV? Is it to split the encoding phase and ripping phase to decrease the time that the disc reader is busy? Just so you can batch encode files?
Maraksot78 , Hey, when you made your personal copy of Fantastic Beasts; did the quality match an iTunes Hd version, and did it look just as clear on a 65” tv? Thanks.
Maraksot78 : Also, just wanted to run by you the preinstalled presets for Apple TV. I didn’t try it yet because I’m waiting for my blu ray drive in the mail. Did you try it at all?
@@4rcgv I can't speak to how my personal copy looks compared to an iTunes HD version but I did a quick little test and streamed a few minutes of it on VUDU paying very close attention to the overall picture quality on my 60" 1080p Samsung TV (which looked really good to me by the way) and then watched my .mp4 copy and I honestly can't say I noticed a difference. The image may have been slightly less sharp but I say 'may have been' because it looked so similar to me that I don't know if there really was a difference.
@@4rcgv I have not tried the AppleTV preset. Looking at the settings in Handbrake though it looks like the Apple 1080p30 Surround has the quality setting at 22, where as the HQ 1080p30 Surround I usually use is at 20. The higher the number the higher the quality. Also the other difference I see is the encoder preset is on Slow for the preset I use and the Apple one is on Medium. Slower encoding does take more time but it is supposed to offer a better result, although in this situation if I encoded a movie using both settings and played them side by side I would guess there would be no noticeable difference since the settings are so close to one another. Other than that all the other settings seem to be the same.
Can you suggest a program that will defeat purposely damaged sectors like the Sony protection scheme? I think WinX probably does but not sure and I don't want to pay and have it not work.
i know i'm going to get shouted at for such a dumb question. the reason why i haven't ripped my blu-rays are because i wasn't sure if i would be able to retain chapter menus. i'd like to be able to jump from scene to scene if necessary. if i rip a blu ray and try to play it on my wd or roku...will i get chapter menus? what software enables me to do that? (dvdfab, handbrake, anydvd?) . thanks
I don't know about chapter menus. I think that's just a disc thing but I could be wrong, I've never looked into that. However I do know you can retain the chapters so you can skip forward and backward by chapter.
In handbrake there is a chapters tab. There one would check the chapter markers box and the chapters will be kept. One may also name the chapters. Unfortunately the website chaptersdb.org is no longer available. It had .csv's and lists of chapters for many DVD's and blu-rays
@@yannisgk thanks to everyone who responded with their input. i followed the instructions in the video (using mkv and handbrake). i'm able to play the video/movie and can jump from chapter to chapter. and that's what i wanted. i can jump from chapter 3 to 17 if i wanted. the thing that sucked is i had to dig out my old blu ray player to get the chapter titles/description. i only had 11 blu rays to rip...so i was able to get them all easily. i have 8 HD DVD but i think i'll just forget about those. again, thanks for the informative video. i've been wanting to do this for a while
Yes you can rip 4K but remember depending on software. MVK is the best file to save keeps resolution. But if your laptop does not play 4K then it's useless to rip a 4K.
I've played around with all of them and I don't know that I can see much of a difference between them since DVD's are 480p. That being said the last DVD I backed up I did using the 1080p 30 surround. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I don't have a blu-ray drive in my computer. I do have a blu-ray player. Can that be used as a drive or do I have to buy a external Blu-ray drive? Thanks!
Hi, thank you for sharing. Any advise on backing up 4K video and compress it using handbrake? If so, please make a video on how to do that. Thank you in advance.
I don't own any 4K discs so I haven't looked into how to back them up all that much. You can buy either an internal or external UHD drive but it appears that as of right now decrypting UHD discs with MakeMKV requires downloading and installing some additional stuff. From the little bit of research I've done so far it sounds like things are pretty early on and you have to find the correct "hashed keys" (which I'm not quite sure what exactly that is and how to use them since I haven't fully looked into it) to get it to work.
Hi, Great video! I'm busy ripping all my blurays now! I was just wondering, is there also a UHD friendly external or internal bluray drive to be purchased so that I can rip my UHD discs? Isn't it better to skip the Makemkv step and go right forward to the Handbrake proces?
I just did a quick search online for UHD drives and it looks like they do exist (I didn't know if they did or not as I don't own any 4K discs). They're pretty expensive but that's to be expected. (over $100 US) Since I don't own any 4K discs I haven't looked into copying them with MakeMKV so I just Googled it and it appears it is possible but there are some hoops you've got to jump through. As for just using Handbrake... to the best of my knowledge Handbrake is just an encoding tool it is not able to decrypt discs on its own which is why you decrypt the disc with MakeMKV and then encode it to a smaller file or different container (aka file type) with Handbrake.
@@Maraksot78 Thanks a lot for checking, I now know that for the time being, it is quite expensive to rip a UHD disc, so let's hope the price of UHD drives will soon become more affordable.
Software no longer works.
Says you need a new version.
Here's a link to the current beta key www.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1053
All you have to do is open MakeMKV click on 'Help' and then 'Register' and copy the beta key into the field that says 'Enter Registration Code' and you should be good to go. If that doesn't work, uninstall MakeMKV, download the installer from their website put in the key and you should be good.

Maraksot78 thanks man appreciate it
no problem. I'm happy to help. :)
Make MKV updates every month or so - simply go to the MKV webpage and download the latest version.... You may have to uninstall the current version from your computer before installing the new version....
Thanks for this comment, and epic video. Helped a ton.

You’re welcome

For me it was 3:31 haha
Loool
Thanks baby
Here's how I figure out which track I need to rip.
1. Open the DVD using the VLC media player.
2. Go through the DVD's navigation to start playing the movie
3. Once the movie is playing, go to Playback->Title in the VLC menu and you will see which track is being currently played.
I legit chucked this video onto 1.5 speed on youtube and it felt about as fast a normal youtube video.
Oh cool.... so you legit did that?
Screen to Scene no he’s right this guy talks about 1.5x too slow
@@ombiradar1969 Thanks for the math to back up the theory

Thanks for the tip.
What about Blu-rays with immersive soundtracks like Dolby Atmos, DTS:X or Auro 3D?
oh that was going to be my question: I need subtitles.
You're welcome. Thanks so much for checking the video out. Cheers man. :)

2:21 and 1.5 speed for best playback
It encodes up to 30 fps, so if original file has less fps the resulting file will have the same
This was really useful, thanks!!
Make MKV is exactly what I'm looking for. Thank you
Great How-to Video!!
Hands down BEST video on this topic. Thank you
just skip the intro and it's decent.
This is a GREAT tutorial and helped me a lot. Thank you!
Also did you know on the MakeMKV you can choose what audio sounds and subtitles you want to keep and not
I have not played around with that. Thanks for the heads up.
The uploader shouldn't have made this video because he clearly has no fucking idea how to use the software he's demonstrating.
Dude we have almost all the same flicks! Great taste!
Just followed your instructions - Everything worked perfectly! Thank you!
Or you can crack it and have it for free

I just wish older movies had blu rays *cough scooby doo on zombie isiland *cough* but instead I have to make my own
5:16 Wrong, you need to open up the file first to select subtitle and audio track / language options.
Brian Ramsey do you know if I use makemkv will it keep the audio such as dts Or Dolby? I want the HD quality as well as sound quality for home theater
Good advice. I already knew about this but this is a good video for beginners.
Another program that is useful for DVD's is DVD shrink. it is useful when ripping Anime, for you can strip the languages you do not want before converting to MP4, for sometimes Japanese ends up being the default.
What about videogames? I have old PS2 disk that are barely working, so if I do a backup while I still can then I can preserve them.
Thank you. I'm new to this and you explain it for beginners which helped.
I wanna make an exact copy of the Blu-ray with menu and different language and subtitles.
So far with DVD it works but having problems with Blu-Ray
MakeMKV does work, but not on all DVDs. I am finding some TV shows on DVD it wont recognize.
This is a great video. You make it so easy to follow and better than some other video on this subject. Great work, and thanks.
I really appreciate this video although after I use Handbreak Plex doesn't seem to be able to find my movie, any suggestions? Other movies I ripped are M4V files even after Handbreaking them its just one movie that isn't, the one movie just showes up as file

ُSystem32 it doesn’t work if you have Blu-Ray I tried many things from UA-cam video tutorials
Maraksot78,
I have seen your tutorial its awesome , i have one question Marak ,i have maximum 400 dvds & i want to
save all these on external hard drive ,which is best harddrive to save movies, my question is all standard DVD's can upscale to 720p to 4k ? .
when dvd movie file copied on Harddisc, its VOB,BUP & IFO files.can we set this file into one file and attach movie picture titie of this folder
so the folder look nice with movie picture.
I loved anydvd, from SlySoft. I purchased a lifetime licence then they dissolved. Never again will I purchase lifetime anything.
DUH LOL
Depends what it is.
You also have to think about big tech buying up other tech companies, then shutting it down too.

Cheers! :)
You can choose the audio format in Handbrake, and can also choose to allow passthrough where it makes a direct copy of the audio.
Great informative vid! Your step by step instructions were very helpful.
Thanks. Happy to hear the video was helpful to you. Cheers!
Nice one sorted my problem, thanks
Does it carry Dolby Atmos signal too in digital copy and play Atmos signal same as in original copy
Can we use this for copies of DVD 📀 we have like the disc is gone but I have Audio Ts , Videos Ts files...??
you can make a video of how to remove scratches from a DVD
Hi, quick question.. Is there a reason why you use MakeMKV to rip the Blu Ray / DVD when you could just use Handbrake to rip in the first place??
XD lol
THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS VIDEO!!! I've been looking for something like this video for a while and you mentioned some thing that I did know to do!
Best ripping software for Mac?
Thanks, excellent tutorial and easy to follow step by step.
Do one need a BDMV Folder for the MKV movie files? And what about an ISO Files via Make MKV? Thanks!!
Is that Cardiff Fork in Big Cottonwood Canyon I see as your background?
I believe it's North Fork :)
Question how long would it take too rip a blu-ray disc on handbrake
Is there a software where you can have a personal offline UI library to select movies instead of going into files or using media player?
nice video man thank a lot for the information
I'm just trying this for the first time. I started with MakeMKV and popped in my Blu-ray and it's been "Loading" for quite a few minutes with no screen changes. Should I give up and try the alternate method?
I'm finally doing this for the first time, I have a 5960x Haswell-E processor, CPU is at 100%. I set the priority to low. This isn't going to fry my CPU, is it? I'm watching my temps with Core Temp right now and my cores are at about under 70 Degrees C.
No worries there. Haswell TJ Max is over 100c, you're a long way from that still. 70c for a CPU under load is perfectly acceptable.
@@Maraksot78 thanks! BTW, why do you use HQ vs Super HQ? I chose Super HQ, assuming it's better. I'm ripping a Blu-ray of a concert.
Thanks.
this was explained very well thanks
you know makemkv and Handbrake have a CLI and you could run a batch file to copy one after the other onto your hard drive or set up handbrake to encode after the copy.
kind of like this
makemkvcon64 mkv --decrypt --directio=true --minlength=2100 --cache 1024 -r disc:0 all "c:\copyfolder"
for %a in ("c:\copyfolder*.mkv") do (handbrakecli -i "%~na.mkv -t 1 -o "%~na_.mkv" -f mkv --strict-anamorphic -e x264 -a 1 -E faac -6 dpl2 -R Auto -B 160 -D 1 -x b-adapt=2:rc-lookahead=50:bframes=2 --verbose=1)
Now this isn't exact but I use a variation of it to rip my dvd's when I have more than just one to do.
Great info, you just saved my home made videos. Thank's a lot buddy :)
You're welcome man. Cheers.
Should I delete the MKV ( Large file) after making the mp4 file with handbreak???
Is there a way to find missing Blu-Ray Extras or Special Features on MakeMKV?
This has been doing just what I need it to do, may go back and rerip some stuff I had already done years ago the hard way.
thanks for checking the video out. I'm happy to hear the video was helpful and you're enjoying you new found knowledge. Cheers! :)
To the best of my knowledge this is not a big deal. I believe you can simply change the file extension to .mp4 from .m4v and it will work.
@@Maraksot78 Thank you!
@@ValthorEldr no problem. I hope I'm not spreading mis-information. I haven't tried it myself but I did read that on a Handbrake forum when I found some of mine were coming out as m4v's. So far I haven't had any issues playing the m4v files so I haven't tried changing the file extension.
i noticed that handbrake seems to make the audio stereo only unless you tell it what to do eg 5.1 dd if a dvd is backed up.
Starts here 2:10. Also BD drives don't always work with some DVDs, a backup DVD drive is always IMO recommended.
Which external bluray ( recommended name n model of brand) drive will work to rip bluray thru Laptop
Great video!! You can get that size down even more by making the file 24fps, rather than 30.
I had AnyDVD back in the day before they were shut down by their government. I had no idea they were back up and running.
Really enjoyed your video. Excellently done.
Thank you. Glad to hear you found it helpful. Enjoy! :)
Maraksot78 ,
Hey, when you made your personal copy of Fantastic Beasts; did the quality match an iTunes Hd version, and did it look just as clear on a 65” tv?
Thanks.
Maraksot78 :
Also, just wanted to run by you the preinstalled presets for Apple TV.
I forgot to add makemkv will rip the raw video file (video, audio, subtitles and chapters).
U CAN USE ANY BD C L O N E R (ANY DVD, FABDVD ETC.) AND THEN PLAY IT WITH POWER DVD ;)
@@yannisgk thanks to everyone who responded with their input. i followed the instructions in the video (using mkv and handbrake). i'm able to play the video/movie and can jump from chapter to chapter. and that's what i wanted. i can jump from chapter 3 to 17 if i wanted. the thing that sucked is i had to dig out my old blu ray player to get the chapter titles/description. i only had 11 blu rays to rip...so i was able to get them all easily. i have 8 HD DVD but i think i'll just forget about those. again, thanks for the informative video. i've been wanting to do this for a while
Questions: 1) does it maintain the highest surround sound audio capability? 2) Can you rip 4K Movies?
Yes you can rip 4K but remember depending on software. MVK is the best file to save keeps resolution. But if your laptop does not play 4K then it's useless to rip a 4K.
What quality settings do you use for DVDs on Handbrake? HQ 480p, 720p or 1080p 30 surround, etc?
I've played around with all of them and I don't know that I can see much of a difference between them since DVD's are 480p. That being said the last DVD I backed up I did using the 1080p 30 surround. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@@Maraksot78 Good stuff, thanks!
No problem. Cheers. :)
I don't have a blu-ray drive in my computer. I do have a blu-ray player. Can that be used as a drive or do I have to buy a external Blu-ray drive? Thanks!
You'll need an external blu-ray drive for your computer. A blu-ray player is just a player, not the same thing as a drive for a computer.
@@Maraksot78 Okay. Not a problem. Thank you for your quick reply. :)
no problem man. This question makes me want to look into it more though and who knows I just may make a video out it. :)
@@Maraksot78 Sounds good. Looking forward to it. :) Thank you again sir.
Are you still interested in backup DVD? If so, are you interested in knowing more about VideoProc DVD to MP4 converter?
Hi,
Great video!
