I recently bought an LG UHD drive (BP60NB10) specifically for this purpose. After the quick flash process (which was a little tricky since the SDF Tool program window was compacted down really small on my screen for some reason), it worked like a dream. It also came with a Cyberlink Media Suite disc (I made sure to uncheck the automatic firmware update feature, just in case). My favorite thing about the particular model I bought (which wasn't even advertised, and I discovered later through the user's manual) is that I can plug it straight into the USB port on a 4K tv or monitor, hold down the eject button while the tray is open and suddenly, I can use it as a normal 4K Blu-ray player!

    • @theshakyproject2971

@@jerryspann8713 You should only need the one USB connection, since it's just a matter of playback. Just in case, I'd strongly recommend looking into a powered USB hub. They're usually super cheap and provide more power than a TV's USB port typically offers. This is also useful if you want to watch movies from an external drive with larger storage, as TVs typically won't recognize a 4TB drive, for instance.

should probably explain to people they can change the settings in makemkv to only by default check a specific language automatically everytime. no need to constantly check and uncheck languages. also should rename your ripped mkv file. like Hacksaw Ridge (2016) 2160p instead of the auto generated names

Nice easy to follow instructions. I applied the firmware update to a LG WH16NS40 everything worked exactly as your described in the video. My file size for the rip of the movie was around 60 GB. I prefer the MP4 format so I re-ripped it again using Handbrake and got the file size down to about 13 GB. The video and sound quality are still fine to me.

Tried this with the LG WH16NS40 internal drive. Worked great as of 08/2024. Be sure to select MK.bin file for the internal drive (not external) off the firmware pack if you are doing it this way. Putting internal firmware on external drive or vice versa will corrupt the blue ray drive.

This only happens when you have the option enabled for transcoding. When you disable transcoding Plex sends you the original file but that needs a ton of bandwidth and your device has to be able to play the file how it is.

2.) WRITE Firmware, READ firmware, or RECOVER drive (I chose WRITE Firmware)

I would prefer to find an external drive, that will work with 4k's right out of the box, without having to flash them, if possible. Can you please walk me through how to rip or copy 4k discs?

I have 6 WD 22 Terabyte external harddrives. I have ripped well over 200 4K movies. I have several 4K UHD external hard drives. I have the one you’re using and it has had problems ripping a lot of 4K movies a lot of them it can’t even read them like there’s no disk. I also have the LG UHD BP60NB10. It actually can detect a lot more 4K Blu Rays but still have a problem detecting or reading some. The I have the BKBuffalo UHD BD Portable Blu-ray Drive Black BRUHD-PU3-BK. I don’t think it has ever had one 4K Blu Ray Disc that it could not detect however it still couldn’t fully rip some 4K Blu Rays. Like it would get 60% to 80% done with ripping it then it couldn’t finishing the ripping process. Can you tell me why it wouldn’t fully tip these movies especially since they’re brand new disks without a scratch or mark on them? Should I clean every seasons dvd and look at the playback of each epi on the dvd afterwards to make sure none of them are not freezing? Or looking the first epi after cleaning the dvd will tell me the rest of the epi are fine?

@@RobHoffman83 Maybe a dumb question. Why compress to mpg?
I usually compress using MKV, HEVC or H265 10 Bit (NVENC) profile. It works pretty quickly if you have a 30 series Nvidia GPU or newer. I have a RTX3070 and RTX3050 in different computers and they both can use the NVENC encoding with Handbrake. I vary the bit rate (11MB to 20Mb), depending on the movie. The more detail I want to preserve, the higher the bit rate. Instead of being 50 to 65GB, the movie size is about 12GB to 25GB. I leave the audio as Passthrough to keep the highest quality.

I don't know if you are still monitoring this video given its age, but I had a question. I've ripped my entire Blu-ray collection, and almost all have codec H264. I have about 25 or so movies that ripped with a Windows Codec. My TV won't play those ones from my external hard drive, and neither will my Roku 3, Xbox One S, and stand alone Blu-ray Player. They don't like that Windows Codec. Weirdly enough 20 or them are movies distributed by Warner Brothers, the rest are from Universal. How can I re-rip them or convert that Codec to something else my TV will play. I've watched other videos where they used Handbrake as a compression tool to decrease the size of the file so it does not take up so much hard drive space. I'm looking for something that changes the Codec to something more common.

Mike, are you familiar with anydvd and clone dvd? I use the iso format to rip my physical movies all in iso format so I can get bit perfect a 1:1 clone of the discs including all the menus with the extra features and special features. I use the extra features and special features that's why I use the iso format. I don't like how makemkv separates each chapter. I have to go each chapter individually and it's time consuming since all the chapters says unknown. I spend more time going thru each channel 1 by 1 and it's a very tedious and annoying process that I need to go thru. I'm trying to figure it out include the all the menus when ripping in the iso format so I can select the load option when playing my movies and on my android phones. I used to be able to select load on android like your loading a disc on the 4k player and it's done the same exact way but done virtually.

I used make mkv but there is no way to load a file like loading a physical disc. I'm still trying to figure out how to load a file like loading a physical disc with the iso format like I have done it in the past but I don't remember how to do it since it has been awhile since I have done it. I want to use the iso format not the mkv format. I don't use any transcoding and encoding when playing the movies. I treat the movies like I'm loading the discs on the 4k player but done exactly the same way on android. There are dvd players that run android on amazon. I was even looking for a portable 4k player that is similar to the portable dvd player that does the same thing as the portable dvd players but plays the 4k discs instead of dvd discs but they don't exist. I'm trying to play a physical disc on android without the physical disc by using the iso format since it's doing the same thing as using the physical disc without the physical discs.

If you could describe the very specific part of the process that a normal attempt to rip an ISO would fail, and give a general "do this instead, and use this tool for this part of the process" we can do it ourselves.

    • @rauland
      @rauland 8 місяців тому +4

Number of reasons: 1)no longer need to store the physical disc in your house - more storage/less clutter
      2) able to watch it anytime, anywhere, anyhow you want
      3) no longer need a 4kUHD player for home viewing (which are getting more scarce than the movies themselves)
      4) digital backup incase anything happens to your discs
      5) using a media server like Plex, Kodi, Emby, Jellybean (?), etc makes it easier to sort and catalogue your movies. Can browse by genre, decade, actor, studio. Can creat custom playlists (do I watch star wars by release date or episode number… make a playlist in either order).
      6) take your movies virtually anywhere
And if you rip them properly, you can’t even tell the difference between disc and digital (and the audio is just as good).
