Thanks. This just confirmed it for me. Customer wanted to do an AC install himself. Charged it and it was blowing 60 on a 105 day. Asked him if he put in an orifice tube and he asked what it was. Thanks

This saved the day. Firestone replaced the evaporator & neglected to install orifice tube. Works great after installing orifice & recharging

Thanks for the reply and I am glad the video helped. I would like to share your scenario with my students. Would you be willing to write the story of your problem and what happen with the missing orifice tube so I can help train future techs about this. What did the your vehicle go in for? What did they do for the repair? What did the A/C do after the repair. Did they find the mistake themself , did you take it somewhere else, or did you repair the problem yourself? I am also writing an A/C textbook and may use this real live scenario in it. Thank you for giving back to those of us who put out free context for the good of the cause. P.P.

Professor Info regarding 2002 ford ranger with missing orifice tube. Initially taken to Firestone for inop aircon. They replaced leaking evaporator & installed new accumulator/ dryer. Aircon was working but definitely weaker than normal. Returned it to them twice with no help. Decided to get gauges & do it myself. Readings with orifice tube missing were 43 / 125 psi with 55 degree outlet temp , equalization time 5 seconds. After installing orifice tube readings are 33 / 165 psi with 38 degree outlet temp , equalization time 45 seconds. System working great . Regards Lance

Hello. What would be considered normal temperature measurements at the inlet and outlet of the orifice tube? Thank you.

We don't teach an exact temperature because there are too many variables. The inlet should be warm to the touch and the outlet should be cold to the touch under normal ambient temperatures. Good luck, PP

I was working on 2000 ford ranger today and found it was missing the orifice tube. It was sweating/ condensating very badly. I knew there was an issue with orifice tube, but didn't expect it to be missing.

Do vehicles with an orifice tube system cycle the compressor more frequently?

Where is the orifice tube? Looks like you can place it anywhere in the line. How do you find it in a dealer installed system? My system was vacuumed and I cannot get new refrigerant to go in. The compressor clutch is always on too. I thought it would be off after vacuuming until it gets enough refrigerant in it.

If the mechanic says the compressor needs to be replaced, can vehicle operate without orifice tube? A/C system is not being used.
Can I install a new orifice tube and operate the a/c system?

I have a 96 dodge ram 2500. I think my orifice tube is missing but not sure. The low pressures are high and the high pressures are low. Brand new compressor and condenser. Any suggestions?

If there is no temperature drop through the orifice tube, it is missing. You can feel before and after the orifice tube in the liquid line with your hand. Also, if equalization time if very fast, around 10 seconds, the orifice tube in missing, Normal time is around 30 seconds. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching, PP.

Shure you can find with cold water only not hot. Or a plastic ink pen can be cut to the proper length you need to put a small spring with a q-tip change the end of two big ink pens Poke a hole in each end and WALA recharge Crank it up will be snow from the vent
