Team Plasma was an organization devoted to bettering the lives of Pokemon by freeing them from human control. They encouraged others to reevaluate the relationship between humans and Pokemon in order to make people more aware of how the imbalance in power is cruel to the Pokemon. This was the enemy team of the games Pokemon Black and White. Although it’s interesting to see this fictional world address the cruel nature of their battle system, we can’t ignore the fact that Team Plasma seems pretty hypocritical. They also use Pokemon in the same way that they preach against. This was a common point of critique of this story at the time, but the truth is I don’t believe this is hypocritical at all. Not anymore at least. And what helped me come to this conclusion is a combination of real-world experience and revisiting the character development of one of the best characters to come from this generation, N. Hear me out as I explain why I say N Was Right. This is Head Full Thoughts Only.

If I'm not mistaken, N also only catches Pokémon temporaly, and then releases them as soon as he can.
I remember there being in-game events where you receive or meet N's former Pokémon, like the Zorua in Black 2.
So he truly follows his ideology.

He was an amazing character and probably the most interesting one in the entire games. (The only one even close is Silver, and his backstory is only fleshed out in REALLY late parts of the games.) N had a goal, was driven by a principled ideology but also his personal feelings based on real world experience befriending pokemon. And then Nintendo throws him under the bus by saying “DUH YOU WERE WRONG ALL ALONG. PLASMA BAD, MEH!” And never brought back again and the main character wins having learned nothing and done nothing.

I haven't fully finished the video yet but I'd also like to point out that in the Pokemon Adventures (Pokespec) manga, neither N or team plasma actually use pokeballs with their pokemon. N is often shown using uncaught pokemon to battle; they just stay by his side. I think it's a great fix and expansion on what the game showed us, and that N's goal is achievable without forcefully catching a pokemon. The pokemon anime also frequently displays the use of pokemon without catching. So I thought I'd just note that.

I wish they could of done that with N in the game, even in 2d they could of pulled it off. Like when evil teams in Pokémon ranger games called Pokémon to battle they would just appear. You could keep the other members of plasma using pokeballs due to them either being persuaded to the cause by N or corrupted by Ghetsis.

I think you forgot to mention the fact that N did find a way to use the only means society provided him to spread his message while not fully going against his ideology: He temporarily catches Pokemon, then after they have fulfilled their purpose, helping him with whatever battle he needs them in, he releases them. And we also know that N can ``talk`` with Pokemon, so maybe he could convince them to temporarily join him without battling them.
The reason N formed his ideology is that as a child, he was given a very *specific* perspective of the world by his excuse of a father. He was always surrounded by only abused, hurt Pokemon, Ghetsis only brought these kinds of Pokemon in front of him, making him see them as the victims, he was isolated from humans, which means he never got to see the other side. The only things he could see & hear were the wounds, cries, conditions of the abused, abandoned, hurt Pokemon.
Our Pokemon were the 1st time he ever heard a Pokemon happy in bashing it`s head into other Pokemon or something like that, and his journey only strengthened this doubt that formed in his mind. The games` story provides ample evidence to show that N wasn`t entirely right, but not fully wrong either. We do see people (Mostly Team Plasma, ironically) abuse & hurt Pokemon, but a majority of the Pokemon are happy with the life of a fighter under a human trainer, nd N is starting to see that more and more as he progresses in his path. Something that is new to him: Pokemon that are not abused, not sad, who are happily attacking each other like a boxing match with the Trainers acting like coaches.
Actually, what proves N`s ideology kinda wrong is a game mechanic that has been in Pokemon since Gen 2: Friendship.
It increases through many methods, but the ones I`ll focus on here are leveling up, Gen 5 onwards it was changed to leveling up IN BATTLE (coincidence? I THINK NOT!), battling against Gym Leaders, E4, Champion and learning TMs & HMs. This shows that generally, Pokemon DO like fighting. It`s like a sport to them, like those fighting sports like Boxing, martial arts etc. Pokemon are the fighters & Trainers are their coaches, except the coaches get to give the commands & take decisions.
Also for the people saying that Team Plasma members are supposed to be hypocrites, that`s because many of them are SUPPOSED to be!

I like to think the reason the white legendary was on the cover of the Black version and the black legendary on the cover of the White version was to show how morally gray the games are. And why was it so gray? Because of N, constantly reminding the player about how maybe the pokemon don't really want to fight, and they may hate us for using them like tools.
N was the character that made me think about the feelings of the pokemon in my team who were there just for HMs and to give me a turn to switch into another pokemon to take damage. He also made me wonder about the pokemon I put in the PC forever. When the feelings of pokemon are mentioned to go both ways with a trainer, it’s hard to ignore the things we all do to some pokemon we catch that would be considered inhumane.

At one point I also thought what the pokemon put into the PC to stay there Forever feel like, but after gen 7 introduced pokepelago my worries were soothed since I could just make a headcanon that all regions have their equivalent of poke pelago where all pokémon in your PC just chill, hang out and do whatever they want at their paradise
As for HM helpers (I hate to call em slaves) I rarely had em, only had one when I needed to use an HM but none of my team members learnt it. Once I could teach a member that move, that helper goes into the PC.

N’s ideals may have been wrong, but his approach was right. N grew up in his own bubble, very close to Pokémon and raised by a bad adoptive father. He only saw black and white that Pokemon and people were better separated.
However, instead of staying inside his bubble and constantly force his ideals down people’s throats, N decides to journey and do Pokemon battles himself. He wants to experience the world so he can better understand why society is the way it is. He wants to challenge his beliefs by seeing other perspectives, and he reasons whether it is right or wrong. In doing so, he’s able to grow as a person with a new perspective after losing to the main character of course.
That’s the problem with our society. We all are caught up in our own bubbles, afraid to step outside to the real world, quick to dismiss other perspectives as wrong. If we just open ourselves and try to understand different point of views, we will see why people think and act differently.
So yes, in that way N was right, and we should strive to be more like him.

    • @fellowpassenger_54-67
      @fellowpassenger_54-67 2 місяці тому

That’s a unique perspective on the matter, the consensus I heard about was people saying that he had the right ideas but the wrong approach
From the viewpoint you provided, it would be great for us to be more open minded in that sense, maybe the reason why that’s easier said than done for some people is because it’s easier to go for the convenient option by shutting out other perspectives right away rather than taking the time to understand those different perspectives to understand others better and to develop their own opinions more
It could also be that there are so many different perspectives on many topics that some people may feel overwhelmed by the sheer abundance of it and decide to push all of it away
If more people were open minded in the way that N was then I think that they would have more positive outlooks on the world which could lead to them or others they influence changing it for the better, what matters is that it starts from the individual themselves before advancing to society as a whole

About your point on there being no known alternative to this system presented in game, there may in fact be one. While I’m not sure how cannon this is, the Ranger games present us a system in which Pokemon battles seem to be little to nonexistent, and the only legal semi exploitative interaction between people and Pokemon are through trained professionals using Pokemon periodically to help defend the environment and world at large, rarely ever hanging on to one Pokemon for that long, much like N dose in the games. Despite it’s questionable standing in the cannon, it could nevertheless be one inspiration to Team Plasma’s ideology both in universe and from a game design standpoint.

you know i have been singing praise for N for.... god since the games came out and I beat it. I never viewed N as a bad guy, he was always just someone there to help you better yourself while trying to become the man he needed to be... to make the changes that needed to be done. I have never felt bad about battling Pokémon until black and white. But, when I played ORAS and my sweet Mightyena boy just took hit after hit from a Primal Kyorge while I was out of healing and everyone was in the red I felt terrible cause N made me view my team not as Pokémon, or animals, but as partners. I will love my angry hyena boy until the day I die, cause He loved me more than all my other Pokémon combined. all the max hearts and Mighty still had more. I barely remember X and Y, cause I was still learning and adapting to N message. I tried to enjoy gen 6 but it just felt different, not bad, but it wasn't B&W, It didn't have N.
it wasn't until ORAS that I fully came to terms with N's message, and found a weird mild ground with playing the games, I can't enjoy them as much as I used to, but in some ways I enjoy them more, teaching a butterfree how to solo wipe an entire e4 member all on their own, made me feel like I did something right, I help them grow so the least amount of suffering was inflicted on my partners. And now I love that little purple big eyed bug, every member on my team after B&W slowly rose up my favorites lists, cause they gave their all for me, and I did my best to do the same for them.
N almost ruined Pokémon for me, cause he challenged me to view my team as more than just creatures that were here to battle for me and nothing else.... they are animals, and I love animals! they are family! and I love my family! so I should love them too.
    And I do.

I've always been first to point out how much he struggles with his mantle of Pokémon trainer despite what he wishes to achieve, how angry and frustrated he gets, but you worded it so well, how he's only using the tools the system provides him, and even being a 'king' doesn't grant him many favors. He's still on this Pokémon journey as himself. I also like that you reminded everyone that there are varied mindsets throughout Team Plasma as well, those who wish to do evil, but also those who actually wish for Pokémon liberation and others still who support only N. Yes he can, Thats why we have 3 main characters,( not talking about cheren and bianca) Getsis, representing the corrupction of the bond or lack there off, The player representing the truth of the bond, N the innocence of the bond, N is only acting for the experience he has had through his life with pokemon, Humanity needs pokemon, as much pokemon need to be with humans to get the most out of eachother, had the player not been there getsis plan would have worked, to no ones benefit.

Might be a bit silly, but it’s always bothered me how people bring up competitive Pokémon as evidence that people abuse Pokémon. That is not how the majority of players play. Or how people say they hate evs. You’ve never needed to use evs in a game. Or their equivalent in gen 1 and 2. You’ve never once needed to worry about evs or natures or any aspects of the competitive Pokémon, so I don’t see why these need to be argued over. You can use them in casual games, or never even look at them. They’re not going to be the deciding factor for a new Pokémon fan enjoying a game, or deciding whether they want to even play Pokémon

The strong points about black and white's story is that N's message is relevant to US who have a different sense of values from the pokemon world.
Where the problem lies in the story telling with N's message is that his ideal was never reinforced, we see him talk about the feelings of pokemon and their freedom but we only see him battle the player(as I remember) which makes his argument make less sense in-story.
I'm not saying his arguments fall apart, it's just that his arguments hits us but not the common populace. Sure there are genuine believers in team plasma but their also the ones who shows us why N is right, but it's less believable because he's associated with the people who are enforcing his ideas in a bad way.
Like I said his message does not fall apart because he does get the legendary pokemon, but when we as the player learn that N is associated with ghetsis the message just doesn't hit as hard.

Honestly the point of N being wrong I think is good. He espouses the propaganda that has been fed to him by Ghetsis who we all know isn’t truly interested in “liberating” Pokemon and is just a front for his fascist ideology. N’s worldview has been carefully curated for him by a man who wanted to lead him to the idea that the relationship between humans and Pokemon is inherently exploitative. But by the end of the game the reason the player wins and he doesn’t is that his convictions are less grounded in reality and has allowed doubt to creep in. He learns this on his journey when he sees for himself time and time again that Pokemon are happy WITH humans.

    • @TearfulZorua
      @TearfulZorua 7 місяців тому

Yeah, but for sure Pokémon are happier without pokeballs, and battling has to hurt, at least somewhat. Based purely on the games, most trainers really are the scum of the earth only wanting to have strong Pokémon to be the very best. And the whole point of Pokémon is to collect all 8 badges and all Pokémon. Who actually, realistically, uses every PC boxed Pokémon from time to time? So to a degree he is in the right, now Ghetsis on the other hand isn't. This is about motive and actual behavior. Many plasma punks would abuse Pokémon in front of the players eyes, and ghetsis is the worst offender of being a total jackass. N, however, is kind to his Pokémon. He releases them after battle because he doesn't want to keep them confined or take them from their homes and families. Surely he'd still visit them from time to time, he was literally raised by Pokémon (ghettos didn't do shit seriously). There's no way you can say that abuse doesn't exist as common as it does in pokemon, just watch the anime, any living dex video, competitive breeder, or take cheren from the games as example. Cheren is likely harsh on his team, in both games, constantly complaining for not being strong, disliking his gym leader team. As the games try to point out, there is no black and white here. No obvious perfect solution. It's unfortunate, but true, that humans are in general quite cruel and dangerous even irl. If anything Pokémon were better off in Legends Arceus where there were very few people that even where capable of Pokémon partnership. They pokeballs were recent, so the trainers in that game had Pokémon that they were raised alongside, they fought as a team in dangerous situations. Most didn't have pokeballs, those were designed to revolutionize Pokémon training and make mega profit. The only reason pokeballs were used by n at all is because it was forced, no one will fight on their own "let the pokemon handle the dispute. Wait no Pokémon? Well too bad, you points are invalid." Or if you do " Wait, you don't want people to keep pokemon? And you have Pokémon, that's hipocracy, I won't listen." The whole situation is there to make N look bad, when in reality he's not. I b2w2 he still think Pokémon should not be kept in pokeballs, does this still count as him being "wrong"? Is putting pokemon in the daycare to breed obnoxious amounts of times even ethical, shouldn't that be cruelty? And starter Pokémon are literally capture to the point of near extinction in the wild. Pokémon like zoroark and the swords of justice hide away from society, as most were heavily mistreated by humans. Is it really fair to discount this for the small number that aren't treated this way? For obvious reasons the company and community commonly agrees that "N's wrong and his ideology is completely pointless, baseless, and overall unreasonable because PoKeMoN LiKe BaTtLiNg." But honestly, if this were real life, it'd be about equal to rooster and dog fights, breeding for the most competitive traits, or the most human idealized traits, and hunting them for sport. most wild animals will want to live free, even if breed in captivity. Only long domestic creatures don't mind, and to be fair look what humans have done to them. It's not like a wild animal can't work alongside humans, but humans only know how to take, especially if it give them something to profit off of. Likely you don't care about this, I am a Furry after all and so that'd make my points look retarded, but I'm against all form of animal and Pokémon cruelty, real life or fictional. Propaganda? I know nothing of the sense as I am politically adverse, so I'd no nothing about if it's propaganda or not. simply put, there is truth to it and N has seen proof of such, any doubts come from the smaller percentage. The player character is characterized as one of the better trainers and N clearly trusts and maybe even considers them a friend, doubts about that friend ship perhaps? And lastly the player character one, whether that be as your opinion states (their ideals were stronger), or it be that the trainer agrees with N to some degree as I'd be more likely to assume. After all, zekrom/Reshiram doesn't awaken until you're right in front of N, you realize you're ideals the strongest then. It would be poetic if both trainers were the ones to awaken zekrom/reshiram, as both their presences are required for both technically speaking. They have the same truth and same Ideals, Ghetsis and others wouldn't work because their ideals were hollow.
Yes I'm an N simp, Yes Its 2 am and I'm exhausted. Yes I know fighting random strangers over nothing is pointless, I am just irrationally irritated by such a statement. I understand opinions and mean no disrespect. This is one of my favorite Pokémon topics and I love opinion dumping about it. If you read any of that massive Wall of text, sorry I got carried away....

I'm really not a fan of the "yet you participate in society" comic. It entirely strawmans and exaggerates the original criticism it was made in response to, which was NOT about "you must reject ALL things produced by capitalism if you criticize it," but about how if you don't at least try to avoid the worst excesses of the thing you are criticizing, it will make your position look weaker. (For a common example I think is fairly reasonable, do our world leaders REALLY need to travel internationally on private jets to attend conferences on climate change, when all the information could be exchanged through a video conference that would use considerably less fossil fuel?) Yes, this does not, in and of itself, mean that what you argue for is wrong, but it can hamper the effectiveness of your cause, and in the worst cases, can give you more issues to clean up down the line if your cause actually starts to gain traction and become able to start making meaningful change.
The point of the criticism the comic originally responded to, was simply "you should follow your principles when you are able to do so."
The irony here, and a point I was waiting to be brought up by the video, but which never came, was that N is actually a VERY GOOD EXAMPLE of a character who must go along with things he doesn't agree with, while going well out of his way to avoid the worst excesses of what he criticizes. What do I mean by that?
When you played through the game, did you ever notice something different about the composition of N's pokemon team each time you fight him, compared to other rivals throughout the series? Most rivals will have a team of Pokemon that gradually grows larger and stronger, but never actually has members of the team get replaced (with a few exceptions, like Gary/Blue's Rattata).
But N? His team is completely different every time he's encountered. And if you pay attention to WHAT Pokemon are on his team each time, and WHERE each fight takes place, you might start to notice a pattern: each of his teams are composed entirely of Pokemon native to the immediate area you fight him in, (with the sole exception of his final battle). Not only that, but their movesets are exactly what a wild Pokemon in that area would be, no TMs, no move tutors, no egg moves, nothing. In most cases, they're even at the same levels as the local wild pokemon. In other words, his teams have had little-to-no training.
He's not taking the typical trainer's journey of capturing a pokemon, taking them with him everywhere he goes, putting them through every battle he can to level up and evolve them, and push them to their limits with TMs. He's traveling the world, meeting Pokemon where they are, battling with them for as long as is necessary to do what he must, before then RELEASING them back into the wild and moving on. And repeating this process again and again, even when it might put him at a disadvantage.
He sticks to his principles as far as he's able to.
It's one of the great bits of storytelling in the game, because the game never explicitly points it out. You have to see the pattern for yourself to see the implications.

It is my personal head cannon, that N got Reshiram. Could be bias because I played white version though.
IMO Legends Arceus proved that his beliefs were reasonable to some extent, even his reformed ideal of having interaction with pokemon without the need of pokeballs were actualized in hisui.
Historic pokemon from Legends Arceus is better, I agree with N. The rest of team plasma on ghetsis's side were only out for power and I dislike them thoroughly. I'm all for reformation, but manipulating for power like a dictator is not redeemable IMO. Plus Ghetsis tries to kill the player character in the second game.
Since in Black and White you can't interact with your Pokémon (No Following mon, No Pokémon amie, No Pokémon Camp, No Picnics), I believe that the games should be remade to include it. The trainer can't be that amazing If they only interact with their pokemon in battle, playing and chilling with them should be the goal. Maybe they change the way the happiness/freindship rate works, the longer the pokemon are left alone in pokeballs the less happy or freindly they are, and the more they are let out the more freindly/happy they are. Plus a required feeding/watering system would be great too. I mean the pokecenter could do that, but to interact with your pokemon you could go pick berries and filter fressh water together in a camp. This way it would give exp. and hp to pokemon, not just restore their basic needs. Of course then death would have to be included which is too dark for a pokemon game, but if it was there then any lost pokemon can be burried or put in the celestic tower. It would be more realistic and add a lot more world building and characterization for all involved. Maybe even side quest jobs for making money to afford equipment and kibble. Oop- thats a rant, sorry 'bout that.
Any ways, alot could be added to pokemon, especially my favorite gen of gen 5. I would say, in gen 5 N was definitely right. Most if not all trainers could be considered bad, the only interactions are pretty much off screen. Plus, Personally the picnic egg option is much more humane than force breeding pokemon at the day care. Now you know my thoughts lol.
People usually say they reformed N, but in my case I think he reformed me. Loool.

The pokemon can use their own moves, they don't need people to tell them what to do, a strong human isn't just a person that can tell you what to do and punish you when you misbehave, a strong person is someone who physically can defend themselves and has empathy.

If this change was for the benefit of Pokemon, then humans shouldn't need to 'use' Pokemon to make the change happen, because Pokemon should be perfectly capable of 'using' themselves. If they can't, then they are either supposed to be the accessories of humans, or Pokemon are missing something important that they need. Also let's not forget that N is a zoroark,
for those who are already aware of the theory, there's another thing that was left out, Takeshi Shudo, one of the early writer of the pokemon anime and animated movies passed away right after the release of black and white and had been calling for a pokemon rebellion arc for years before, he was hospitalised for health conditions during the early development of the black and white games,
It's entirely possible that they actually paid hommage to Takeshi Shudo by making N a zoroark as he would have wanted, and considering that was when he wanted to put the pokemon rebellion arc, if he was still working on the anime by gen 5, we probably would have zoroark-N canon in the anime.

Pokemon stories are the kind you’d find in an 80s cartoon aimed to sell toys, because that’s all Pokemon is. A media franchise made to sell toys. If they really cared about art N and Silver would be the main characters…but they’re not. Pokemon is the definition of strictly formula. Fire, water, grass starter, get 8 gym badges, encounter a cooky, fashion victim team, friendship speeches, Pokemon with no individuality, rinse and repeat.

They are some of the main characters in their respective games though...they just aren't protagonists and frankly they don't have to be. No it isn't the definition of that. Except gen 7 had trials, and the gyms are still different from each other, they aren't all cooky, most evil teams aren't that though, which are often about different things in each speech, which was only in gen 5, it's not rinse and repeat as most of the things you mentioned weren't in every game. No it doesn't deserve to die. Not at all, it's still changed and it's only thriving more, you only view that way because you don't like it anymore...but you not liking it doesn't mean it's a zombie franchise, get over yourself, the truth is the games have been selling more then they ever have before so calling it a "zombie franchise" is as false as it gets.

I've alot of thoughts, so apologies in advance for the text wall 😅
I agree with alot of what you said here, however I belive N and especialy team plasma aren't free of hypocrisy. I feel the distinction between them is important because while N genuinely belives and acts on his ideals, the other members of team plasma only spout them to hide their true motives. Examples of this include the grunts who kick the stuffing out of a munna to try and get its dream gas, the grunt in team plasma's fortress who expresses a deep distain for the rattata in his care and confusion at the the rattata's continued efforts to interact and play with him, and Ghetsis himself who openly proclaims at durring the climax that he dosent care at all about pokemon, he just wanted to neuter any efforts to stop him from taking over the world.
The hypocrisy of N and whatever grunts actualy follow him takes a different form. I do belive N when he says that hes doing what hes doing because he belives hes right, but his intentions being pure doesn't mean they dont have flaws. Putting aside the numerous counterexamples one could state to his ideology, his own actions counteract his most desired goal: to keep all pokemon safe and happy. We see throughout the game how N and the grunts who follow him will steal pokemon from other trainers, and while this does track with his ideology, hes doing it to set them free, he never seems to take into account how the pokemon feel about this change. Even in cases where the pokemon very obviously don't want to be separated from their trainers, like Bianca and her munna, it dosent matter. He isn't giving them their agency back, hes removing it from them in the oposite way. Its an aspect of his character I find super interesting and I wish they'd explored it more in the game.

    • @ChampionAnalysis
      @ChampionAnalysis  2 роки тому +1

Yeah I think I should've made it clearer that I was referring to N and those that genuinely follow his ideals cause there are those that hopped on the cause to do foul things, which is really good story wise. I think N is definitely written to be someone who is trying to balance his actions with his ideals, but his flaw is in the name of the games. He has a deliberately black and white perspective on things and I think what we see in the game is that perspective being challenged internally and externally. I described only the internal, but moments like Bianca and her Munna would be the external challenges to his Black and White perspective. N really feels like another protagonist for these reasons. He's learning as if he was the real main character lol

The fact that the game establishes pretty much everything N was preaching was wrong, and essentially pokemon like fighting and being captured, is done so to excuse away the moral dilemma in the games. The games want the answer to is battling n capturing unethical to be "yes". if you as a trainer had to come terms with the entire way the system is set up youd have to admit being a trainer is kinda fucked up.
