Hang in there, Ben. That is a tough one. I’m with you, it could have been a heat surge. The only other thing that I can think of is possibly hand lotion or some similar substance if the food was touched. It would then dissipate once in the water a bit and likely would not affect the snails as they would be the last to eat. That one is a long shot, but interested to see what you find out on this. Better days ahead, Ben. Know that your “fish family” supports all that you do.
Thanks for the honesty…so many only talk about the good side of fish keeping, not the problems. Sorry for you losses…. and hope you get to the bottom if it.…👍🏽
Yikes! Not the starry night! That was one of your bucket list fish. That's good you got rid of the old heater though. I had that happen to me once with an older community tank where the heater went crazy high once and killed my fish. I had no idea what happened but I tested it again without any fish and it went ok for about a week or so and then the temp went crazy high again, so I pitched the heater. You'll bounce back from this! Thanks for the upload! I know its hard to do for situations like this.
I use a temp controller with an adjustable heater to avoid any type of malfunction just incase
I’m so sorry for the loss, it’s never easy and I can hear it in your description of what happened. Sending you lots of positive thoughts and look forward to the revival of the tank with some great fish inside!
Been in the hobby 30 years. 🐠 fish loss happens. If someone says they have never had loss there lying
Truth. A full tank wipe out is rare, but fish loss is more common than most would admit.
So sorry for your loss Ben! I had it happen to me a few weeks ago.
I recently purchased an albino Eyebiter. It had ‘something’ and wiped out most of my gorgeous haps. I had at least 20 dead haps. I too put in some experimental fish. Took me two months to get the tank ‘right’ again. I share your pain.
Damn, that was a tough one.
@@BenOchart I’ve followed you for years. Love your commentary and candidness. Unfortunately it happens. My loss definitely was not a heater. My fish took about two weeks to pass. It was horrible. I kept thinking I crashed the cycle too. I had 10 Starry Nights at one point. One of my favorite fish. I currently have 4- all huge. One of them was a survivor of the carnage and unfortunately lost an eye. Three are in the 120 and one in my 90. Also a beautiful platinum OB peacock lost an eye but survived which makes me think it was a parasite of some kind. Stay strong. Keep up the great work!
I really appreciate your honesty. I'm going to Aquashella next week and my hubby is nervous about something happening to a tank. It is unfortunate that you lost your fish, and I'm very sorry for your loss. Even though they are "just fish", and we know it is part of the hobby, we still love our creatures in the glass boxes and losing them isn't easy. Your honesty in this video will help my hubby feel better if someone doesn't make it the week that I'm away. My thought is that there was possibly an electrical surge that happened from the heater when it gave it's final "push" to get more energy. Kind of like an old school light bulb flashed as it burned out. Maybe?
That’s quite possible.
Losing fish while away is the exception. Don’t worry. This was a fluke of some kind for sure.
No problem Ben I'd be more than happy to do what I can
Sorry for loss Ben. I would clean out that quarantine tank the starry night was in also just in case.
Sorry for the loss Ben. It really sounds like a heater issue
😢 sorry for your loss. X
Sorry for your loss Ben. That sucks
Thanks
sorry to hear Ben ... I had a similar occurrence about 20 years ago, .... lost more than 75% of the fish in a 33gal due to a defective heater ... I now run two "under rated" heaters in my show tank for that reason
Sorry for your loss. I have pulled all my heaters out of the tanks except a few in the African tanks, but they are aquarium co op heaters. But I thought I heard that they were having issues so Cory stop selling them. So I may pull them as well.
Wow so sorry Ben. Ugh I’m thinking maybe that heater surged or some electrical current from the bad heater really strange. Sorry to hear the sad news.
👍🤠 Hopefully all is well with you and your family after the tornado. Aquarium sucks, you’ll figure it out
We’re good. Thanks Kev.
So sorry to hear this. This sounds electronic to me possibly heater or filtration. Replace everything just to be safe.
😢 sorry to hear that man
Sorry for your loss. That's terrible. You should look into getting titanium grounding probes for your tanks- it's something I've never seen anyone mention on UA-cam, but the Aquarium Guys Podcast has recommended using them on multiple episodes.
We have all been through these experiences. Sometimes this stuff happens
Truth
Well looking at the tank there was more then enough oxygen being produced. Also all dead fish after a day or 2 get white wool on them so they didnt die from a disease and you said you checked parameters and they were good. Could it have been deodorant or something similar floating in the air ? Possibly the heater did shortout. Plug the heater in and test with your multi meter while the heater is in a bucket of water.
did your fish keeper have something on her hands, lotion. nail polish stuff... the tank is smallish... did the person spray cologne ... perfume
Hey ben, total bummer I'm guessing something with that new fish. Or a heater or even both. Sorry brother this is a part of the hobby we all hate.
Sorry for all of this. You were so excited about that Starry Night and it just sucks. I would replace that heater for sure.
It’s already in the trash. I’ll start looking for another starry night…
same to me wiped out 9 adult peacock's and never did figure it out. That was a great loss, only thing I came up with maybe I added them to quickly over a few days.
Ben...don't you have Aquarium co-op heaters? I see recently they have recalled the heaters due to failure. Maybe that could have been the culprit?
That’s the one I tossed. I can’t confirm but it wasn’t adjusting properly and that never a good sign.
That's why we quarantine. I've never quarantined a fish in an established tank with other fish tho.... Cause that isn't a quarantine. But I've definitely had a fish due suddenly that was in quarantine.
@@BParker55 I agree. I have a 10 gallon that is just for quarantining new fish or medicating current ones if needed. The aquarium doesn’t have substrate, but it is decorated with faux aquarium plants and a couple of figurines so the fish feel safe. I also have another 10 gallon that I’m currently using as a quarantine tank as well, but I will be taking that one down eventually.
If I purchase a group of fish that are together at the store or part of the same filtration system (I.e., like at PertSmart or Petco) then I will put them together to quarantine. I only keep small community fish so a 10 gallon suits them fine. Otherwise, I’ve learned to be patient and wait the full quarantine timeline before buying more fish. It’s hard though! LOL! Impulse buying is real!😉🤣
By the way. Not sure if you have any cameras in your rooms to record and help monitor things when you can’t be in the room but I highly suggest buying at least 2 for that room. Wyze has very nice and affordable cams you might consider including one you can pan around the room and capture anything strange.
I know what you’re thinking. What would that have to do with water quality or why my fish died? It might show exactly when the possible surge occured because these cams record 24/7. You can really do a lot using them. Just don’t tell anyone they are in the room unless you don’t care. It’s not a big deal anyway.
Not a bad idea!
Sorry to hear this happened 😢.
I'm guessing a malfunction of the heater. The current won't harm you but it will the fish
I'm sooo very sorry to hear this - My deepest condolances....
😭💔
Wow crazy. I’ve kept fish for 30 years and never had that happen. Especially that quick. Heater as you said maybe a power surge? Sorry to hear it this hobby can be heart breaking.
That is very strange. Let us know what you discover Ben.
Hey Ben, I know you have Ink Birds on most of your tanks, but I didn't notice if you had on that one. I think that must be what happened the fish got cooked. I have one on all of my tanks (even my 5 gallon betta) pretty sure I got the idea from you in the first place. Great insurance.
That is terrible. I hate that. I know the feeling and it kills me. I had lost 2 of my favorite Africnas in my main tank. It pushed me to thoughts of changing everything and do something else. Being at a loss odmf info is the worst
We’ve all been there. It’s frustrating not knowing what really happened but I’m leaning toward the heater being the killer.
How traumatic! Very sad to have this happen to say the least.
Sorry Ben. That is hard to handle but thank goodness your other tanks are fine
Yes. A wipe out of one of the big tanks would have been heart breaking.
It sure does sound like a heat spike or some electrical issue. Really is baffling and frustrating when these things happen and they do to all of us at one time or another. With all the storms around as of late i wonder if it was a power surge where maybe the power went on and off real quick and it caused a temporary heater malfunction? The way you describe the fish having a white fuzz on them sounds to me like a bacteria caused by a sudden malfunction of the heater. Hope things come back to normal and it never happens again!
Sorry 4 the loss man, sucks.
After years go by we think we know it all but theres always surprises. Sometimes its our fault & others it just happens.
If I just had one fish u was keeping & he passed i probably wouldve quit awhile ago. But now that i have a few tanks & a lot of fish its not that onr fosh isnt important but instill need to keep others safe & healthy.
So its a way to stay positive.
Keep forgetting most keep tropical dicaye fish and it doesn't take much to take them out.
Question for the group.
I had a tank that had one cichlid in a 20 gallon for over a year. The filter recently quick & took a few days to replace it.
Everyday i checked amminia, nittite & nitrates and hardly any nitrates. Did water changes for those few days and fish got popeye then entire side of the fish was red.
Returning back from petco with new filter & he eas upside down gone.
Beisdes basic ammonia, nutrites, nitrates, could very high TDS organica built up & caused it?
Sorry to hear, that's a super bummer. My thoughts are if this was a virus you'd have fish dying at different time periods, unlikely that it would be so sudden or they wouldn't be dying all at once. I would be curious if the person caring for your tanks may have had something on their hands while feeding or possibly touching the water, perfume, soap, etc., especially considering there is plenty of oxygen going, just seems more like a poisoning than viral or bacterial.
Same thing happened with my fish that I bought from aquatic critters. Bought a red Texas that I quarantined and thought I was good after 2 weeks. Once I released it into my main aquarium…all my other fish were covered in white spots coming from the gills and fins and were all lost within a week.
D you use meds in quarantine? I routinely use General Cure and IchX
Sorry for your loss. It could of been a heater mess up but i think it would of took the snails out as well so im thinking that since it was on the small volume of water tank i believe you its 20 gallons? My thoughts are maybe a complete accident and when she feed the tank she possibly had so type of hand lotion on because this time of year with weather changes people get dry hands so i would just check? And sorry for your loss
That is very odd and I think maybe it was something electrical that surged inside the tank and killed the fish. It would seem unlikely but I would unplug the heater and replace it regardless with a new one. Better safe than sorry. Doesn’t sound like a water quality issue for sure. Strange I agree. Sorry this happened to you.
If your substrate is very old sometimes gases build up from decomposing nutrients and just bubble through into the water kill everything and disappear like it was never there
I'd say heater issue. More of a lower temperature since snails can tolerate that where the other fish couldn't handle colder temps.
Sounds like a heat spike. I've had it happen to me
Ben, sorry for the the Fish and You. I never had a loss of all fish. You will figure this out. I do not trust todays heaters. They will say Temp at 80, but when my hand is in the aquarium it is warmer than 80 degrees.
My hosital tank was a 20 long with 1 sponge filter 1 heater and 1 whisper filter without carbon.
Yes, go back to the store Starry Night came from and see if you get a correct Honest answer. Good Luck to you Ben May 10 2024
I had a tank with one adult Bristol Nose Pleco and 40 baby Brsitol Nose Plecos. My wife for work at 1:00 PM she said everything was fine. I got home around 4:00 p.m., 6:03 and everyone was dead except for 5 baby Plecos, which died later that day. I even tested the water before I took everyone out and everything was the same. I did buy 5 new fish two weeks prior that died in that tank, so I can only assume they brought something in.
Sorry ben i know that sucks even when you loose 1 bummer i bet it was heater. Don't you have controllers on all your tanks?
It's possible a larger fish died due to disease and that triggered a fish die off due to poisoning? Seems odd the snails survived well though.
Definitely think it was that heater
That's been my conclusion as well.
fumes in the air from testors glue building a battleship model killed a tank i had once -- but if its air itll be in every tank but this is a single tank so its more likely contaminated hands
I think it was the heater. It killed my bettas
A vivid example of why medications should be used when you quarantine newly purchased fish.
It’s looking more and more like a heater malfunction, something meds would not have helped.
@@BenOchart About 18 months ago, at Father Fish's suggestion, I disconnected all my heaters. One of rhe best decisions I made to prevent a fish disaster. Fortunately my fish room has very stable temperatures year round. I leave them connected if there is whole house heating issue. Good luck. I am in the process of recovering from a 3 yr old child dumping 1 pond krill flakes in a 55 gallon!
So sorry ben ! Even my self sometimes i lose fish and i still wonder what happened so suddenly.. i don’t how many fish you lost , but could it be the heat as you said ? Or maybe something spooked them and ran into the glass… if you fogure out please update us
Spend the extra money and get a InkBird temp WiFi temp controller.. it will give me alerts on my phone.. and has an audible alarm
Heater malfunction I've had it happen to me😢
pH swing? Not enough KH in the water to neutralize the acid build up from fish waste over the weekend maybe?
I am so sorry for your loss.
Bummer. Ugh
I wonder if it was the Hygger heater. I had many that had trouble with.
I wasn’t using a Hygger in there.
My guess (and from experience) perhaps there was something on her hands/fingers when she feed
What was the water temp? Failed heater?
Maybe it was the other way around. Your fish in your tank were used to certain pathogens that were already there and had resistance to them but a new fish added to the tank might not.
Sorry to hear , its a loss but a learning experience hopefully if you come up with some answers. Good luck !
Question? Did you do a water change prior to leaving over the weekend? Happened to me several months ago. I lost almost a whole tank of very rare Petrochromis that I can't replace now and no reason that I could think of also except that I had changed water several days prior and maybe some sort of spike? But, the largest of the fish survived and 3 plecos. I am still baffled by what happened.
Interestingly Bill it was one of 3 tanks that didn't get a WC before I headed out. If I had, your line of thinking would have been on my radar for sure.
I feel like your heater shorted out. Use a multimeter and see if electricity in the water?
Fluke thing you might not ever know why it happened. Has to be heater you would think .going through the same thing I now have a really nice camera recording on my tanks I see everything . Might be worth it . Jmo
It does suck losing an entire tank, anyone who’s been in the hobby long enough has lost a whole tank at least once. I lost a quarantine 10 gal a few years ago due to heater failure, I had a minnow in there for a few months that was doing great. Then I added four juvenile polar blues and they were doing great as well and growing, about a month or so later they all started dying off slowly and within three hours the whole tank was gone.
Ouch. Sorry to hear that.
Has to be the heater...shorted or stuck on...too many different species to all go at once. Pull all those C'op Heaters and ask Cory or the crew about what actually failed with them unless it was a different brand.
Bad batch of heaters.
Could it have been something like hand sanitizer? That stuff can be toxic to fish!
I asked and nothing like that was being used 🤷🏼♂️🤷🏼♂️🤷🏼♂️
First of all, Daaannnggg! 😮 That stinks. I'm so sorry to hear this. 😢
As far as why/what happened, I'd lean towards some sort of outside pathogen that found its way into the tank. What that pathogen was, I can only guess. Perfume? Something she had on her hands? Hair spray? Air freshener? That's not to say it COULDN'T be one of the things you mentioned, but those would be far down the list for me. I mean, I've been keeping fish for a long time. Longer than I care to admit, in fact. I've had electricity bleed into the water column and across the water's surface, but it didn't kill any fish. I've had a glass heater crack and trip the breaker that was tied to that outlet. I flipped it back on before realizing it was the heater that had tripped it and juiced the tank. Even then, it didn't kill the fish... although it rendered them confused and sleepy for an hour or better. I've never heard of a heater surging long enough to fry the fish only to reset itself later. I've never heard of a disease or parasite striking that fast and taking that kind of toll on the residents of the tank, especially after the week or two that had passed since adding the Starry Night. Everything points towards something getting into the tank to me.
Odd how it didn't get into any other tank and all tanks were fed at the same time? What you're saying does make sense.
Get that heater out. I think it was electrocution
I would say some time of poisoning I don’t think a virus could do that either I would say poisoning or heater malfunction or severe oxygen loss
Two weeks ago my wife woke me up...one of my guppy tanks was "buzzing". A heater had stuck on and boiled them alive. Lost around 30 beautiful guppies, fry and a Clown pleco.
😢😢😮
Ben: probably contaminated hands touched the water in that 1 tank - even 1 finger can bring enough contaminants into a tank to kill fish - alot of soaps and fancy shampoos can leave a chemical nightmare residue on hair -- hands touch everything in the house, car, shopping center
Sorry Ben about your loss , but I agree it was probably a heat issue with your heater, that's the most logical explanation.
Electricity travels on the surface of the water, not through the water column. When dipping your hand in the tank you would not feel a thing if you are not grounded…ie barefoot would definitely do it. Wearing rubber soled shoes would insulate you from ground and you would not notice a thing.
I should have watched the whole video before commentating haha sorry about this Ben, I had a recent event like this where I lost a bunch of fish without a sure fire reason. The gear we run in our tanks is usually the culprit when nothing else explains it
Electrocuted i say . maybe from the bad heater . just take a little current to wipe out fish . happened to a saltwater youtuber in store aquarium .
Could your heater have gotten stuck on temporary ? Oh just covered heater. On city water ? City pipes get shocked prior to a water change.?
Yea that sucks for sure. Did you have a heater controller on the heater?
I experienced a similar issue about 6 years ago. But I knew what happened I replaced an over head sump that was leaking and the next day every fish was dead. So I believe the plastic it was made of was toxic.
I am sorry for your loss it did happen to me i lost 2 tanks all the fish died it was kind super ich it killed every thing in 3 days i used ichX Wright way but it did not work i never see or know something like that happened before but i get this ich in 4 tanks all most lost 120galon goldfish tank and my 200 gallon south amercan tank to
If I could make a suggestion to you for a community tank I would try to keep the temperature at about 75 to 76° at the most
I'm thinking that it was your oxygen exchange for that tank with that quantity of fish and adding that starry night in there was the breaking point of running out of oxygen with the high temp. Of 80 degrees and above
Things always seen to happen when you go away
I was doing pretty good with trips ... my luck obviously ran out...
Ben,
If the fish had the White Fuzzy stuff on them it sounds like with the heat you got some kind of bacteria that spread fast and took out the whole tank. I had something similar happen to me and it took out my whole tank of African cichlids it was devastating to watch. Sounds like the heat made the Bacteria fuzzy white stuff bloom quick. I would ask the Fish store if they had a breakout of the bacteria. I think that is what wiped out the tank. Not sure if it could be Electrical. I am so sorry Ben on the loss of Fish.
if no ammonia spike ?is some kind of disease columnaris?
your fish keeper must have had something on her hands and she put them in the tank..
If there's anything I can do or you need let me know I know it's hard for me to help from here but I can try
Nice of you Joe to offer. Thanks.
Sorry for your loss unfortunately in this hobby things happen that we don't understand or can explain.
It boggles my mind🤔
Another thing, I once had a wave maker short circuit in a 75 gal tank that has 1 red devil, it was enough to shock me if I touched the water. I dont know how long it was shorted but my fish was, and is, completely fine so I'm not sure how much these smaller currents affect fish.
I'm sorry Ben. I had something like this happened to me many years ago. It was the heater that stuck on. The temp was off the chart. All of my fish died. I was so upset. It was back in the day with the over the rim clamp on heater. These were notoriously unreliable.
I lost bettas due to those Hygger heaters
I think if you would have had another one of those sponge filters bubbling up some good air you would have been all right you know in the right side corner like your left side has
