Explore the midnight zone with deep-sea biologist Bruce Robison

- The largest living space on Earth lies between our ocean’s sunlit upper layers and the deep seafloor. The midnight zone is home to our planet’s largest ecosystems and the life that thrives there likely outnumbers all other animals on the planet. And yet, we are still learning about this vast ecosystem with each research expedition.
As the Monterey Bay Aquarium prepares for the launch of their 2022 exhibit, "Into the Deep: Exploring Our Undiscovered Ocean," they sat down with MBARI Senior Scientist Bruce Robison, who has studied and explored the midnight zone for his entire career. The stories he tells about the discoveries we’ve made boggle the mind, inspiring awe and wonder about how animals have adapted to this dark, cold, fluid world. Most of these animals don’t look or act like their shallow-water relatives, and have evolved an incredible array of strategies to not only survive in the midnight zone, but thrive there.

I would spend an entire day just sitting and listening to this man tell me about things he has seen.

That’s way books of scientists worth a lot …
Me too. Just sit there and watch during the different stages of day light on the surface.
This man is fascinating and so is this video..
There’s so much love for what he does, it’s not a job, it’s just living his life with excitement everyday.
No.... wait.... don’t end yet.... I want more.... please?!?!?

When I was a kid I really wanted to be a marine biologist. But I have problems remembering names and numbers, really bad problems. And marine biologist deal with a lot of numbers and never mind the scientific names...Unfortunately I've only had the opportunity to go to the Monterey Bay Aquarium 4 or 5 times and its been decades since I last went. Needless to say I love this channel!!! Stay safe everyone and please wear a mask!
ua-cam.com/video/z4jsKm_3yHk/v-deo.html
Mask of the beast
The depths of the oceans are truly amazing, I can't wait to learn about all the new species that are discovered.
ua-cam.com/video/z4jsKm_3yHk/v-deo.html
When you’ve got “the best job in the world”... is it actually a job at that point? Surely it’s a vocation, and a fabulous one at that. What a dude, we need more of this guy, I need more of this guy... people like this enrich all of our lives
Marine biologists, and scientists in general are extremely underpaid.
If you work as a marine biologist then it is because you truly love what you do, not because of the money, so there’s that
That guy is really cool. I'd like to see him host future videos.
ua-cam.com/video/z4jsKm_3yHk/v-deo.html
We really do live on a remarkable planet! Would live for this to be 10x longer!
ua-cam.com/video/7Weqtut_i5w/v-deo.html⭐🐿
The barrel eye fish is a pretty good indication that we know very little about the diversity of life in the universe. If there is this much variation right here on our little planet, imagine the wonders that lay out there.
The earth is a closed system, all the real aliens are in the deep oceans and caves
"I have the best job in world." I want to say that too, in the future.
the deep sea creatures are amazing !
ua-cam.com/video/z4jsKm_3yHk/v-deo.html
So magical. I am always amazed at how much has been invested and still invested to explore space and then we know so little about the seas, their depths and the wonderful and bizarre creatures that habit them. Forgetting that the seas provide almost 50% of the oxygen we breathe.
Aint nobody left earths atmosphere, even the iss is in low earth orbit. The deep sea is where all the real aliens are at
I am so grateful that you are sharing some of the important breath taking research you are discovering. Through people like you we can still see how beautiful this planet can be, even in these uncertain of times, I for one would like to thank you & all at MBARI ✌🏻💕🌈
So wonderful, we just can’t get enough of it. Thank you for showing us.
What I have never understood is how the creatures that live their entire existence in total darkness don't lose their minds and swim as fast as they can away from the sub's light.
Anyone have any idea? I'm extremely curious about this, and have been for 25 years, at least.
I think they’re blind or something. Wouldn’t have the same eyesight in pure darkness 🤔
@@artedesarializ But their eyes are still good enough to see bioluminescence, which is comparatively quite dim. FAR dimmer than those sub's lights.
I've thought before that maybe it's due to where those wavelengths are on the electromagnetic scale; but if we can see bioluminescence, then it falls into the "visible light" part of the spectrum, same as the sub lights. So that makes me think I'm wrong.
It's their habitat. I think if your put light they would feel like night for us
Am more curious if they are blinded for the rest of their short lives on that side, and easy prey for larger predators. It would be the equivalent (sort of) of shining an airport search light into our eyes. Not likely to recover any normal sight after that.
@@robertmarmaduke9721 The thought an animal could be blinded on one side, and therefor be easy pickings for predators never occurred to me. Surely they're _at the very least_ temporarily blinded.
I work on the boats that these guys charter. The stuff we do fascinates me. It's literally like living in a documentary.
they knew exactly what they were doing with that thumbnail.

First time I’ve heard of a Whale Fish and an Owl Fish! 😱
Such an underrated Channel
This was amazing!
So cool... I wish they would put up the names for each fascinating creature they showed in the video. Maybe they haven't had time to name them all?
Idea: why not let the public nominate names for them? It will be such a great ad campaign, for their research effort and funding!
You do have the best job in the world-I should’ve taken my colleges professor’s advice and sought out marine biology as my major and keep culinary as my undergraduate degree. He said he could see my passion and was highly impressed with the depth in which I was able to memorize and know. It truly is THAT INTERESTING and I always wanted to learn more. Being a biologist would’ve been an excellent choice and I’d be making a difference in the world 🌎
I just like how passionate and confident this lovely man about his job. I envy him.
Well, his job is indeed too amazing!
The last bit was really heratwarming :)

Love when they explore the deep. So many things that we have never seen awesome
This is so educate and fascinating at the same time. I'm amazed
What an amazing opportunity to work studying the deep sea. I guess there's no specific career path to do it besides being a marine biologist and being at the right place at the right time.
Growing up near San Diego, California, one of my favorite pastimes was visiting Scripps Oceanographic Institute’s aquarium. My favorite Animal was the moray eel. He’d shyly peek out of his rock palace and he just looked so cute.
love the barrel eye fish. so adorable!
I love it when people are so passionate about their jobs and I love it when they share with me what they do even if it’s a yt video I enjoyed watching it
They all look so cute and squishy! 🥺♥️
I agree with you Bruce, I'm envious - do more videos, it's the only way I'll ever see the twilight zone of the ocean.

This video is absolutely fantastic!! I specially like how some fish are transparent, and some of their internal organs are clearly visible! The Owl fish is superb, while the Angler fish is ready for its prey! We can see so many creatures in the jungles and oceans, but who knows, there is so much left to discover!
All I can say about this video is that the marine world is Fascinating 💫💫!!
