A magnificent coverage of not only the long history of these trains that have survived in the mountainous regions of India, but also an insight of the people who depend on the railways in this beautiful, yet difficult part of the sub-continent. The railways and the communities are all entwined, and together display a determination to succeed. And they accept their situation happily it seems. May they not succumb to the empty and treacherous lifestyles paraded as idealistic outside their paradisaic mountain home.
Public comments. God bless India. A country with unique and beautiful place. God bless the land of India. Hard work and dedication by Indian people by working together in unity.
From the mid to the late 1940,s on many occasions I travelled by this wonderful little train from the plains to my school in Ootacamund, and then back home for the holidays. This film brings back many very happy memories of Ooty and the train journey in those days. Visiting South India I travelled on the train around 18 years ago, and again 5 years ago, obviously a lot has changed but it was still a great experience.
A beautiful documentary by the BBC. Trains are at the heart of the modern India history and a vital source of employment for countless 1000's of Indians. I have travelled many 1000's of km on India's railways and it nurtured a love of this fascinating country. The Nilgiri ride is just one of those more memorable occasions. Felt almost homesick watching this.
One of the best ever documentary I have seen, the bgm, the frames, the series of stories, it made me cry, very emotional! I’m so so proud to live in the Nilgiris and see these mighty trains on a daily basis!!
This is a good stroll down memory lane. Been there seen that done that (Ooty and Coonorr) I rode in the cabin of a steam engine from Ernakulam South to Jolarpettai and had charge of the whistle chord as a five year old (1959). I drove a diesel engine from Bangarpet to Marikuppam. (1968))
9:39, Just look at his burst of happiness! Simple and pure! To some of us in the hustle and bustle of the what they call the western society, could learn a thing or two from this!
This is the best documentary which I have seen ever in my life. Touching the each peoples life those who are in part of spend their life there in a brilliant way. Its more than feel a classic emotional movie. Wonderful job and appreciated to Mr. Hugo Smith, Mr. Bernad Hill Mr. Mike Stewart, Emma Willis and Mr. Sonal Kochale
Beautifully made, it transports each viewer deep into the lives of each one of those who are involved in the daily running of this railway line. a very well spent one hour !
True dedication to the railways and the work they have to do to keep the railway running it is a sacrifice of love and devotion to the railways Being away from their own families and loved ones for extended periods of time Thank you from all train lovers all over the world
Such a wonderful documentary and beautiful stories of some of the people behind the railways! Bless all the people that work on the railways for the important work they do.
This So wonderful, touching real life an Indian Railway. It's shows how much influence and impact on Indian people thier day-to-day life. This documentary is an outstanding production. I've been to India four times but I never heard about this beautiful countryside with lots of wildlife. From NYC
Really excellent production, with beautiful soundtrack and heart-warming intimate stories of the people this road touches. Enjoyed every moment start to finish 💖 🇨🇦
A good enlightening documentary on what the the old steam engines of yesteryear still mean to those for whom the railways are not just a means to a livelihood but a passionate calling. I was surprised to note the casual and indifferent approach to the maintenance and development and more importantly, the safety aspect of both train and personnel; depending wholly on the love and dedication of the employees. I would liked to have known about the history of its conception and construction and the challenge of developing the special locomotive needed for this phenomenal project. These engines were designed and built by the Swiss if I recall
This was a pretty interesting documentary video because it gives a nice backstory of how the Nilgri Mountain Railway was made, and this is the backstory that Ashima should've gotten in the Thomas & Friends series especially how Big World Big Adventures era wasted her chance to develop as a character, but thankfully the Tracks to Big Adventures series (which is a reboot to the Big World Big Adventures BTW) at least gave her some backstory of how she was created & how she ended up of where she was in the Great Race movie, and this video really inspired @ThomasTheorist & @ThomasFan2002 to create such a beautiful backstory for Ashima in the fan made series of Thomas & Friends, Tracks to Big Adventures.
Once again money can’t buy happiness. Hope we Indians can avoid this western trap of race for money. How pure and beautiful are the lives of these people in this documentary.

is this video available in better quality anywhere?
What's wrong with this quality. It's perfect.
This was recorded in late 90's so I guess we will have to be content with the quality...

Can anyone throw some light about Anglo Indians ? Who are they .
A person whose father or any of whose other male progenitors in the male line is or was of European descent but who is a native of India.
Anglo here, my paternal grandfather used to work on the steam locos in the hubli division years ago
it ruffles his feathers, that a woman can do his job, but could he do hers ?
Why are the locos pushing the train?
No turn tabels to change position i have went there many times
@@adhitalks6662 No passing track to run around the train either? Weird! Thanks
@@adhitalks6662 ???? Are you implying that for the return trip the locos will be running backwards?
