• TEJAS EXPRESS coaches ... -~-
From the Himalayas in the north to the Nilgiris in the south - for a hundred years these little trains have climbed through the clouds and into the wonderful world of Indian hill railways.
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is a line so close to the people that it flows like a river through their lives. The relationship between the train and the people is changing, however, as a new generation of Gurkhas populates these hills, demanding an independent state and fighting for a new identity as they journey into the modern Indian world.

It was watching this that lead me to visiting Darjeeling back in 2012. I was travelling through Asia. I went on the toy train and actually met Sita. She passed me as I was crossing the tracks and she noticed me looking at her. I said namaste and did the charade's sign for TV show. She nodded it was her. I tried to tell her how much respect I had for her and asked how her boys were. She said they were doing fine. I asked if i could take her photo and offered her money, which she would not accept. That photo occupies a special place in my office. What a fantastic woman.
My mother is same like sita she too is illiterate but she gave us everything that we want she gave us good education excellent clothes to wear excellent schools and colleges
Excellent coaching centres
And finally my brother is a orthologist Dr
MY 3 sisters well married in huge respected educated family
And me myself a grade 1 officer in central government
Huge respect to mother sita 🙏😇😘😘😘😘😘
I salute all the mothers like Sita.
Bowing to all the mothers of India
wow please tell her i love her too
congrats suraj, your mother must be proud my friend. i was raised ina well to do home. where we knew manners, what and what NOT to do. were also taught, if we want something, we show some effort to acquire it. your mother i guarantee is proud of your progress and the progress of your brothers and sisters.
What an amazing woman she must be. Such dedication for the children, much respect.
Just wow!! Came here for the love of the railways, but stayed back for the wonderful, honest, hardworking men & women. Heartfelt respect to Sita Chhetri.
Really..I wish i could meet her and salute her and give her some treat
Much better than some bollywood movies......beautiful documentary by bbc ❤
The history and stories about the region and trains is fascinating, but it's the stories of the people behind the railways that really resonate.
I knew I shouldn't be crying, this is a really old documentary, but I'm so happy when this hardworking mom's son got accepted in a good school, I wonder what happen to them now, hopefully he excels in his study, get a good job and help his brothers and mom too...
There is only one word to appreciate your efforts for such a nice documentary is " EXCELLENT ".
Excellent is putting it mildly. these documentaries i play when i go to bed. something to listen to and perhaps learn something
I rode this train to Darjeeling in 1974, amazing to see it is still running. Well done
With Hugh Ballantyne’s tour ???
@@ronaldhall87 No we were two backpackers traveling from Australia to the UK by public transport.
I rode in 1984-and got a look at the engine. The brake was a wooden 2x4-it worked! Women were ina separate car. The 36 degree turn down hill was a crawl!! No other train ride like it in the world!!♥️♥️♥️♥️
I have hours of very atmospheric video from a trainspotters’ tour which visited Darjeeling in 1984. No diesels then ! Most of the Darjeeling videos now online are modern and staged; my video recorded the actuality. I just need to digitise the video and put it on UA-cam…. 😀
@@lbazemore585 The San Fransisco cable cars still use pine planks for brake linings. You can smell the resin burning when you go down a hill.
This documentary was screened in our law institute on 8th aug 2019 we also met the director!!! This is a beautiful documentary , and my favourite till now, so finely woven stories of 3 families
Without knowing history and know one can create a history. So, Indian Railways heritage is soul of India's DEVELOPMENTS .
I appreciate the patriotism of the Indian people! From, Florida
Bernard Hill, who narrated this series, passed away this morning. RIP and God bless.
Tears rolled down my cheeks when i saw Sita z sonz reaction after looking at the result n again i became so deeply contented seeing the reaction of both mother n son after they met principal. I bless n pray for that boyz success. As i m watching this in 2020, i sincerely wish the boy should hv settled in very good job.
But sadly Madhu died due to some serious health issues. The most tragic incident.
🙏🏽
Great documentary. Committed peoples and a stunning natural beauty.
Respect From Pakistan.

@@serialkillerx666 Okz come then
I had seen this quite a few years ago,,the whole 3 part series. It is just too good for words. Trust me, if you see all the parts, you will be tempted to immediately go and experience all the three trains...and the way BBC has woven a story around them is really their signature style...do not miss it!
this is amazing doc. Sita is an inspiration. it made me cry... bless
I love the dedication of Sita Chettre. A great mother wants better kife for for her kids
Fascinating. A very well done documentary. It makes me even more grateful to have been born in one of the developed nations, and all the benefits thereof. Respect from Canada.
The whole episode is touching.👌👌👌
Excellent, jolly good show! I really enjoyed the intimate interwoven stories of 3 very different families. The 'Rock' band bit was great - what a great song! Thank you 💖 🇨🇦
Respect sita... hardworking for son's education.

Sidney Pratt I thought I am only one. Himalayan mountain sacred snow rock gemstone mountains. Monks and precious stone crafts for Buddhism and sand arts.
Thanks so much for posting. India is fascinating!

sita i wish you the best. you have within you a blessing, and also not quitting when that would be the easiest thing to do.
Very informative program. Darjeeling beautifull nature
as i already said, ime amazed, original steam trains, still running
Hope this documentary helped the lady though. Its very hard looking at her carrying so much load both figuratively and literally. I salute her and her determination to provide food and education for her kids all by herself. I hope if not all maybe atleast one of her kids manage to finish school.
Several viewers sent financial help to the porter lady Sita, through our local crew. It meant a lot to her.
Explanation pathways with background music of this documentary is more brilliant.
I love this documentary so much...
Excellent and very historic. Excellent coverage.
Engine 788, made in Springburn Glasgow.
that was 150 eons ago.
That it is still in use is thanks to DHR.
if you get what i mean
Amazing piece of work!
I think this is a very good and honest video Thanks. very interesting and enjoyable

ive seen a 70 year old lady, carrying a big bundle of firewood, a young tourist, offered to help her, and they couldnt even lift it, off of the ground, both i, and the old lady had a good laugh, these people are small built, but as strong as donkeys
☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️
Beautiful documentary
Look at that nature 😍😍😍😍😍😍
I love Indian railways.
Simply WOW....
Truly gorgeous.
Exilent video stream Power is alive till now in this railway service it's a nice thing.
Sita is the real definition of a 'strong woman'. She works hard for her family, they always will come first.
Take note Western 'strong women', it's not about getting tats and driving a car like a knobhead bloke.
Power to you India, stay strong.
I enjoy this it has very beautiful scenery
home away from home ... good morning Sir Jeremy
the train sound on living view that the most favorite watching the life on travel in eyes
This railway is the heart ❤️
Incredible India❤️💚💛💙🇮🇳
So this has been documented 10 years back Darjeeling is just 80 km from my home town Siliguri if we go with bike it will take 1& half hour's to reach to the Queen of hills Darjeeling as i am watching this video i can really understand back on that time life was too hard but know it is completely changed due to the development & many tourist visiting sites more & more people are coming more & more incomes are growing i hope & wish one day you guys will do visit The Queen of hills Darjeeling
What a brilliant woman its true if everybody are the same in terms of way of living who will do the task?i guessed nobody!
Very nice share .
Great woman, Sita
Excellent
I'm so glad for Sita her son made it in to St. Joseph College! Neema's mother is old and cannot do without him -- he is selfish to want to abandon all to be a monk while he is needed by family.
Neema, gave major part of his life (decades) attending to his family needs, practiced celibacy, carried on his spiritual journey, in off duty time.. What else do you expect from him... cant his other siblings(who had normal lands at his expense) attend to their mother. All know the way, few walk it.
Thanks to j Lumley the actress for fighting the British for Gurkhas rights. After giving their lives fighting for king and country.
17:37 The man says no one comes to see the diesel, I have said for years you won't fall in love with the diesel but you will with steam.
This documentary was filmed in 2010 it would be interesting to see where the journey has taken them in 10 years.
Gorkha land is still not the reality but support for it's formation has increased as the BJP of PM Narendra Modi ( notice the lotuses on the flags ,that's BJP symbol ) is the ruling party RN . West Bengal is ruled by a communist dictator sort of a women from TMC party , The folks of Darjeeling have been long wary of that woman.
The most tragic happens when Sita lost her elder son Madhu who got admission to North Point College.
@@samiersamier8889 really how???
@@jeetendraprasad9643 due to some serious illness. I dont know the illness but he lost his life.
I am watching this video after 7 years... eagar to know about sita ji again..Had she taken retirement and what her son doing now after completing studies
In an age where railways served the people
I wish the video was more into the technicalities of the Mountain Railway!
Very beautiful train! I have also one video of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway...Thank you! Best Regards from Germany, Railherbie
And beautiful real trains

Amazing train
Respect for mother Sita
Nice
This is so beautiful and moving.. Such amazing presentation and narration. Darjeeling is a beautiful place with warm and kind people and will always remain my favourite place.
Could you please share me the links of the other two episodes?
😢😢😢 I want to be a fitter in that workshop to keep these little engines going
i suppose ime privileged, i dont demand anything from my son, i can remember, the pressures put apon me, to get a trade, be successful, who cares if your happy or fulfilled, well actually parents and relatives, i did, now i will support my son, in whatever he wants, as long as he doesnt exploit other people, and doesnt disrespect or embarrass me
THE FACT THAT YOU REALIZE THAT YOUR SON SHOULD NOT EXPLOIT OR DISRESPECT OTHERS, SHOWS THAT YOU ARE YOURSELF A WONDERFUL FATHER & HUMAN BEING. JESUS BLESS YOU AND BE WITH YOU, AND I HOPE YOUR SON BECOMES A GOOD WONDERFUL HUMAN BEING LIKE YOU.
A beautiful trilogy. All of them superb, many thanks to the BBC
❤️
Jai Gorkha Jai Hind 👍👍👍🇳🇪🇳🇪🇳🇪
Hope this music band has flourished now.
has the DHR ever transported tea? I understand that was the main purpose behind building the railway? their B class engines where built to pull their trains up the steep hills
I wonder how's Sita's son, Madu, doing now. I hope he's success with his study and life. All best wishes and prayers for them.
Sita is fine now but Madhu lost his life few years ago due to serious health issues.
@@samiersamier8889 Soo heartbreaking 😭😭😭
I pray Sita may stay strong n continue with her life. I also pray that she survived this horrible pandemic.
Thank you for have shared this update. I also pray that you survive this pandemic 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
RIP Bernard Hill
How fun to be the rail sander! Why make the rails only 2 feet across?
55:14 I wud dare to say neema u too didnt get it like all others! did u? ....smile
7;23 Believe in yourself and see yourself famous already for u hold the key to your destiny!!
Sita barely earns 100 Rs per day. But when it came to her son's education, she said "why are you worried about the expenses, we'll manage". That's how selfless parents are.
Sita embodies what it really means to be a mother.
Ngelihatnya serasa mimpi. Di atas gunung kok ada kereta api. Luar biasa.
I think crowd funding is the answer to sustain Darjeeling Railways or some wealthy persons may contribute handsome amount.
Indian government always neglected about this train . UNESCO once asked to operate this train.
Fuck, I will always love BBC 4
Jaswant came and went like absent the next one too will be same as him
I wondered what the two guys at the front of the loco are doing? I only see them for a second or so.
They sprinkle sands on the track ahead for more traction on steep slopes..
