- Dear friends, I am proud to present you the first lesson of my 2-lesson course, Tools of the Trade: Brushes, called An Overview of the Main Types of Brushes. Of course, I am by no means claiming a complete overview of the market. I just want to tell you about the main types of brushes that exist - those included in the minimal set of every watercolor artist. I'll tell you what functions these brushes are used for, as well as what principles should be followed in order to best create your own set of brushes.
In addition, I will tell you about the simplest rules to follow to take care of your brushes and they would serve you as long as possible.
My second lesson, called My Brushes, will be released on Thursday June 10! Don't miss it :)

That was brilliant and very interesting. I really enjoyed it and recognized many excellent brushes. The last few minutes made me cringe with guilt- I use the cover tubes for my precious Escoda Perlas!! Never again, I promise. 😆 thank you Michael.
Thanks Barbara! With the cover tubes - well, now you know, not too late to reanimate your brushes :)

I love collecting brushes going to the art store to get a new brush gives me goosebumps 😆

Michael, you are great, not only as an artist, that I admire you deeply, but also great as a person for so generously conveying what you know to us. Magnificent and enlightening explanation. I have learned many things and I am looking forward to your second part. A hug. Thank you
Thank you very much Maria! I am glad you really liked this video :) Second part is coming this Thursday!
Very interesting. Thank you for your sharing and precious advices
I am very excited i just ordered your paint set.
Now im looking for the right brush.
Maestro Michael. This was the most informative video I ever watched! My brushes were all fuzzy and couldn't keep the nice shape, and now I know why. I was 1) washing brushes with soap and left some soap to keep shape (horrible!), and 2) drying my wet brushes vertically standing up, and 3) some even had a protector cap! I tried all what you instructed here, and now all my brushes are in perfect condition just cleaning with water. This was utterly eye-opening experience.
I watch all your videos religiously and hope someday, I can take your workshop in person. You are not only super talented, but also the most generous, open-arm educator.
Thank you very much! And yes, I just purchased the Slinky!😝 -- Yuko

So funny! I’m listening just now your lesson about “ watercolor paper” all you need to know . Great lesson ! I needed it! I like your philosophy about watercolor, your style and paintings , you are very talented! I have been thinking of buying some of the tools you recommended but I live in Europe ( Sweden and France) and I don’t know if I have to pay extra fees because you live in Canada ! I’m still a beginner but very very eager to learn more and maybe I’ll will be your student. Thank you again for your wonderful art and generosity with your inspiring words. Have a nice day ! Natasha
Thank you very much for your feedback!! Some materials are available on the French Amazon. I think it will be easier. www.watercoloronline.com/amazon
You are an angel!😊
Thank you for the BEST explanation of brushes. I'm not at the point of buying the expensive brushes but do have my eye on the two squirrels who run along my deck and stop and watch me paint through the sliding door. LOL....All kidding aside. My next brush purchase will be a decent liner and will be looking for a slinky. Why did I throw out my childhood toys so very long ago????
Hahahaha thanks so much Paula! I might humbly suggest the liner I am using and producing www.watercoloronline.com/product-page/rat-liner-brush
I think it is really good :)
I myself never knew slinky can be used as an important tool!
Love your videos. Where might one find one of those spring things to rest brushes on the table?
Thanks Anne! The slinky? you can find it in any dollar store :)
Amazing demo, Michael! So many new informations about brushes! It’s really a complete course about the subject. Thank you so much for sharing your big knowledge! 😊
Thank you so much, Luisa! Really glad you found the course informative!
Thank you, Michael, very informativ, and now i know, how to differentiate synthetic from natural hair brushes! What do you think about swordliners? Do you use them, for brunches, or what else? And i like the Rosemary and co brushes too, they have a good quality and are not so expensive. Have you tried them?
Michael can you make a video on dry brush effect?
It basic techniques are my introductory video courses you can find here: www.watercoloronline.com/video-courses
If by chance, you dont want them anymore, Im here ;)
Haha, thanks, but I think I gonna keep them :)
❤❤❤
Michael, thanks so much for such a broad education in brushes. I will be buying couple for my new journey in watercolor. I want to ask, I have a flat brush that I used many years ago that is a natural hair, apparently when stored, the hair got messy in one side, Do you have a reccommendation to fix it and make the hair flat again?
The best advice is to hold the brush in warm water (about 60 degrees), lather it properly and let it dry for a day, giving it the desired shape. It usually helps.)
Very usefull and complete explanations! Thank you for the french subtitles !
Merci beaucoup Rosine!
👌🏾👏
Michael thank you very much for such informative video. I have a question that I don't know if you have the answer. How do manufacturers get hair from squirrels? I'm not vegan or anything, but I wouldn't like if they have to hurt them for their fur. Thank you!!
Dear Juan, I share your worries here and understand exactly what you are talking about. All I know is nobody exterminates squirrels solely for the brushes. It goes through the full cycle, as usual. Squirrels are raised on the farms, just like other animals. And it is not just the hair for brushes that gets used, but everything. But it is a routine practice for our civilization, which sounds very sad, but is true. But in my opinion nothing compares to the quality of natural hair. So, since the farms and the production like that exist, I am ready to use it. But I understand your regret about it. Thank you for a difficult, but interesting question.
I am looking for a good liner what is the best ?
from Rat, traditional calligraphy liner.
Hi, do you have any experience with old JM Paillard brushes?
Dear Miguel! Unfortunately, I've never seen these brushes. I have heard about them a few times, but they never got into my hands :( Which I am very sad about. So I can tell you nothing about them. But I will be glad if you let me know something about it. Thank you very much!
Hello, I am also an enthusiast of brushes, apparently in Van Gogh's book of letters to his brother he relates four times the use of the JM Paillard brand, and since then I have had a concern to know it more thoroughly. Very recently I have had the opportunity to get a large batch of brand-new, brand-new JM Paillard brushes from a closed warehouse for many years, after testing them I found that they are of a high quality but I don't have much experience, that's why I asked you if You knew them, if you may be interested in any, I can send you photos without obligation, many thanks
What about Kolinsky sable brushes? Anita Rollo
Hi Anita, good question. For my feeling its great brushes, and I using them. Thу top for pointy detailed job.
After cleaning, I always use my saliva to reshape my brushes. I've done it for years. Is this OK? My brushes last a long time...
Thanks for the question, Jeanie! Yes, it's possible. It doesn't harm the brushes in any way. There is even such a club "Eating Brushes" :)
I never saw a video on which brushes to buy. Yours is a fair video, but again, does not list the exact brush. So, you might say, the exact brush is not important, and that you are explaining the types and concepts behind them. So true. Now consider the poor viewer who has to work out what brush they have seen in order to order it. Well, two brushes I could make out were DaVinci Maestro Series 35 number 4. Then I was able to make out DaVinci Casaneo Number 4. This was thanks to pausing the video and viewing in High Resolution. Obviously your guide is great, but the biggest failing is with not suggesting the sizes. Ah! Again you will say it's not possible to be precise, since every make is proprietary specific. True, but consider the buyer; he/she has no clue, so I think mentioning what you use, and some examples would definitely help the clueless. Now, fortunately I'm not clueless, but the smallest brush I have in a number 6 Perla. Hopefully the two n.4 brushes I ordered are what I need; but the difficulty in guessing the right size is the hardest job in the world without spending a fortune. Thank you Michael
Thank you for your feedback... Next time I'll be more precise )
Very interesting. Thank you for your sharing and precious advices
I am glad you found this video helpful, Pat!
