  • Dear friends, I am proud to present you the first lesson of my 2-lesson course, Tools of the Trade: Brushes, called An Overview of the Main Types of Brushes. Of course, I am by no means claiming a complete overview of the market. I just want to tell you about the main types of brushes that exist - those included in the minimal set of every watercolor artist. I'll tell you what functions these brushes are used for, as well as what principles should be followed in order to best create your own set of brushes.
    In addition, I will tell you about the simplest rules to follow to take care of your brushes and they would serve you as long as possible.
    My second lesson, called My Brushes, will be released on Thursday June 10! Don't miss it :)

    That was brilliant and very interesting. I really enjoyed it and recognized many excellent brushes. The last few minutes made me cringe with guilt- I use the cover tubes for my precious Escoda Perlas!! Never again, I promise. 😆 thank you Michael.

    Maestro Michael. This was the most informative video I ever watched! My brushes were all fuzzy and couldn't keep the nice shape, and now I know why. I was 1) washing brushes with soap and left some soap to keep shape (horrible!), and 2) drying my wet brushes vertically standing up, and 3) some even had a protector cap! I tried all what you instructed here, and now all my brushes are in perfect condition just cleaning with water. This was utterly eye-opening experience.
    I watch all your videos religiously and hope someday, I can take your workshop in person. You are not only super talented, but also the most generous, open-arm educator.
    Thank you very much! And yes, I just purchased the Slinky!😝 -- Yuko

      The best advice is to hold the brush in warm water (about 60 degrees), lather it properly and let it dry for a day, giving it the desired shape. It usually helps.)

    Michael thank you very much for such informative video. I have a question that I don't know if you have the answer. How do manufacturers get hair from squirrels? I'm not vegan or anything, but I wouldn't like if they have to hurt them for their fur. Thank you!!

    • @watercoloronlinemsolovyev
      @watercoloronlinemsolovyev  3 роки тому +1

      Dear Juan, I share your worries here and understand exactly what you are talking about. All I know is nobody exterminates squirrels solely for the brushes. It goes through the full cycle, as usual. Squirrels are raised on the farms, just like other animals. And it is not just the hair for brushes that gets used, but everything. But it is a routine practice for our civilization, which sounds very sad, but is true. But in my opinion nothing compares to the quality of natural hair. So, since the farms and the production like that exist, I am ready to use it. But I understand your regret about it. Thank you for a difficult, but interesting question.

      Hello, I am also an enthusiast of brushes, apparently in Van Gogh's book of letters to his brother he relates four times the use of the JM Paillard brand, and since then I have had a concern to know it more thoroughly. Very recently I have had the opportunity to get a large batch of brand-new, brand-new JM Paillard brushes from a closed warehouse for many years, after testing them I found that they are of a high quality but I don't have much experience, that's why I asked you if You knew them, if you may be interested in any, I can send you photos without obligation,many thanks

    After cleaning, I always use my saliva to reshape my brushes. I've done it for years. Is this OK? My brushes last a long time...

      Thanks for the question, Jeanie! Yes, it's possible. It doesn't harm the brushes in any way. There is even such a club "Eating Brushes" :)

    I never saw a video on which brushes to buy. Yours is a fair video, but again, does not list the exact brush. So, you might say, the exact brush is not important, and that you are explaining the types and concepts behind them. So true. Now consider the poor viewer who has to work out what brush they have seen in order to order it. Well, two brushes I could make out were DaVinci Maestro Series 35 number 4. Then I was able to make out DaVinci Casaneo Number 4. This was thanks to pausing the video and viewing in High Resolution. Obviously your guide is great, but the biggest failing is with not suggesting the sizes. Ah! Again you will say it's not possible to be precise, since every make is proprietary specific. True, but consider the buyer; he/she has no clue, so I think mentioning what you use, and some examples would definitely help the clueless. Now, fortunately I'm not clueless, but the smallest brush I have in a number 6 Perla. Hopefully the two n.4 brushes I ordered are what I need; but the difficulty in guessing the right size is the hardest job in the world without spending a fortune. Thank you Michael
