The previous-generation Kia Niro had a lot to love, with its eco-friendly powertrains and practical shape. Can the all-new 2023 Kia Niro fix the old car's shortcomings while also improving on what made the old Niro such a good vehicle?
Today, let's go through the 2023 Niro's press photos to discuss the Niro's design, specs, powertrains, and features!
    -----
    2023 Kia Niro
    - Released in 2021 in certain markets
    - Coming to the US in late summer or fall 2022
    - Front wheel drive
    - Available as a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), battery electric vehicle (BEV or EV), and hybrid (HEV)
    - EV - 253 mile range, with 10-80% charge in 45 minutes. A bit more range than the base EV6, but less than EV6 with upgraded battery
    - PHEV - 33 mile battery range, 180 hp total output
    - Hybrid - 53 mpg combined, 139 hp total output
    - Based on new K3 platform, shared with Hyundai Elantra. Should be lighter, with a lower center of gravity than old Niro
    - Very slightly larger than the old Niro, most notably 2.5" longer
    -----
The Kia Niro will compete with a wide range of vehicles, including the Mazda MX-30, Mazda CX-30, Honda HR-V, Honda CR-V, Subaru Crosstrek, Subaru Forester, Hyundai Kona, Hyundai Tucson, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Ford Escape, Chevrolet Blazer, Chevrolet Equinox, Toyota Prius, Acura RDX, and Tesla Model Y.
The Niro EV is positioned as a cheaper alternative to the Kia EV6. Although the Niro EV and EV6 both start around $40k, the EV6 can get an upgraded battery and AWD, pushing its top-end price to nearly $60k.

      The exterior/interior change!
I’m finally ready to let go of my 2015 Kia Rio and was considering a 2022 Tucson until they made the changes. The old Niro just looked too much like my Rio

Thanks for this interesting review of the new Niro. We’ve had an e-Niro (Niro EV in the USA) since March 2019 here in France. After 60,000 km the only thing to go wrong was the passenger side wing mirror wouldn’t fold back when the car was locked, it could still be adjusted from inside the car, so a minor problem and replaced under warranty. We like the charge port being at the front and have rapid charged the car on trips to UK, Germany, Switzerland and on long hauls within France. The e-Niro is a range monster, really efficient winter/summer average 14.5 kWh/100 km..which I think is more than 4 miles/kWh. For anyone interested in the long term ownership view on this car you are welcome to check our Kia e-Niro Diaries Encore. As retired folks living in rural France we plan this car to be a long term keeper.

Hello, James. The stripes you point out at 9:18 are for the interior mood-lighting color effect, which is adjustable, but that's all there is. I wish there was more of it inside the cabin.

Charge point at the front, easier than chewing on if someone parks a bit too close

Being in Berkeley I love your observation that they parked it here because of our charging density. California’s zero-emission vehicle market continues to lead the nation, The state surpassed 1 million plug-in electric cars, pickup trucks, SUVs and motorcycles sold - more than the total sales in the next 10 states combined. New data also show that California, with only 10 percent of the nation’s cars, now accounts for over 40 percent of all zero-emission cars in the country.

Great video, James. I'm interested in the PHEV. Just not enough charging stations in rural MN yet for the EV. The PHEV electric motor gets a horsepower boost from the 2022 model something around 23 horsepower more from what I understand. Any idea if the 2023 will get a better 0-60 mph with that increase over the regular hybrid or the 2022 PHEV? Thanks.

Glad you enjoyed the video, Tony. I don’t have information yet about the updated powertrains, but if there is a 23 hp power bump I’d imagine that would take off about 0.3 sec. from 0-60.

I had a Mazda3 hatchback, and am now the happy owner of a 2018 "regular" hybrid Niro, I'm looking forward to the next generation version, and hope to replace my current Niro with a new one. I don't see anything here to change my mind, though I don't plan to buy the high-end Niro. A HUD would be nice, but is not necessary. Otherwise, the interior looks excellent. I don't mind the big "C" pillar, but I hope I can get one that's not a contrasting color.

I have a 2018 Niro HEV and love driving it but I don't feel it has a very attractive exterior. Especially the front end. However I think Kia has changed all of that and more. I'm one who loves the contrasting C-Pillars and can't wait to see it in person. As for the interior, it looks amazing even though the HEV will still come with a standard shift instead of the dial shifter. That is very disappointing. Everything else is updated including the fact it will now have a power tailgate that was not available on the old model. I was considering an EV6 but I think I'm going to simply buy another Niro when they become available here in the US.

I am first on the list for a 2023 Niro plug-in with a California dealer that is selling at MSRP, no markup. Can’t wait till they start shipping to dealers. I have heard as early as summer.
