- VE Day, 8 May 1945 was a day to celebrate. Victory in Europe Day marked the long-awaited defeat of Nazi Germany by the Allies and followed the formal acts of military surrender. In Britain, Churchill marked the occasion by declaring this day a Public Holiday. People held local street parties, danced and sang in the streets and huge crowds gathered in London around Westminster, Trafalgar Square and outside Buckingham Palace.
Newsreel, Service and amateur cameramen all captured VE Day on film. Highlights from the IWM film collection can be viewed in our show-reel including vibrant colour footage taken by amateur cameramen taking part in the celebrations.

It will end. Just like the War, it will take time, but we will get there. There will be massive celebrations everywhere. I'd be surprised if there wasn't.

A great video the atmosphere looks electric! We really need to push VE day this year. I know we're all in lockdown but we can still celebrate being socially conscious. This year we are fighting an invisible enemy and we will be victorious again. 🇬🇧

Would have been a great film to show young children as an introduction to VEDay but a man in uniform throws a rude hand gesture at the end of film.

@@hugothelegume2994 It means "war". There's a difference between a) having your two fingers up and have your palm facing you (war) and b) having your two fingers up and have your palm face away from you (peace) .They're opposites.
